Using ring modulation as a brand of harmony is one of my favorite effects to achieve. Here are three effects you can do this with, in one form or another:
Way Huge Ringworm Ring Modulator
Malekko Heavy Industry Scrutator
Blackout Effectors Whetstone Phaser (ring mod setting on the rotary switch)
Here's the signal chain:
Fender American Standard Stratocaster loaded with the "Everything Axe" pickup set from Seymour Duncan
Divine Noise cables
SolidgoldFX Buffer
Scrutator/Whetstone/Ringworm
Malekko Omicron SPRING
Tech 21 Character Series Leeds Sansamp
IK Multimedia iRig 2
Soundcamp
Shot in 4k on my Galaxy s9.

This is pretty neat. The similarity between the ring mod and high speed tremolo is striking. This makes sense though, they are both forms of amplitude modulation, so you are going to get the sidebands at the sum and difference frequencies. Typically a tremolo is going to be modulating at sub-audio frequencies, so nobody notices the sidebands! I did a bit of googling and the textbook difference between ring modulation and straight up amplitude modulation appears to be that in AM, the carrier (your guitar) signal is preserved in the output. Also the amplitude of the sidebands is half that as in ring modulation. That first difference is negated by mixing the wet/dry signal.
Excellent! That's fantastic information, and very well presented! I'm actually gonna pin your comment. Thank you!
wonderwulf I also added a link to your channel in the description. Your approach and comprehension of pedals is awesome!
That's pretty neat, thanks!
For sure! This is exactly the kind of collaborative vibe I always hope for with these videos.
You've got me believing i need pedals in my life
Well, then, my work here is done! Ha ha.
Very interesting. I love the names of the Way Huge pedals 😂
Thanks! ...my personal favorite is the Fat Sandwich. That's a pedal name right there.
Sounds great. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I appreciate you checking it out.
have the Whetstone and the Scrutator on my pedal genie wishlist because of these videos. Unfortunately they do not have a Way Huge Ringworm. Did come across an EHX RING THING and im loving that pedal. Really far out stuff. My 1st love will always be the GONKULATOR i scored for $40 new from DOD but i really love the sounds you get out of these as well as the MOOG and EHX Ring Mod sounds. Never throught i could ever get into Ring Modulators like i have this year but they are tied for my FAV Effect right now.
Yeah, the Ring Thing is awesome! The Ringworm, sadly, has been recently discontinued. I've been curious about the Gonkulator-- such an awesome price!
...I'm right with you. Never would have guessed, but it is for sure one of my favorites! Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm glad you dig the pedals/videos!
For sure! DOD kills it in their price range... and honestly, some of them kill a lot of more expensive pedals! A very cool company for sure. I'll be looking forward to that shootout!
Very cool....my fear of the bit/data/wtf pedals is subsiding quite a bit lol! Thanks!
Ha ha. Glad to be of service!!
Now, let's hear 'em all in parallel!
That video is coming!! Slowly but surely (technical difficulties etc) it is coming. Ha ha! Thanks for watching!!
Always struggled to understand things like ring modulators lol
Me, too! I like them, but I'm not sure I could explain them! Ha ha
Dude I just don't understand why you hate earthquaker and way huge so much. I mean you're not even giving them a chance. Lol. Great vid Dude! Very cool ideas!
Ha ha ha. Right!? Thanks for watching as always, your support is awesome!
