- Nancy Zieman, a legend in quiltmaking, passed away today, November 14, 2017. I've made a few of Nancy's projects, having learned a lot of what I know from waching Sewing With Nancy on PBS. Today, I'm honorg Nancy's memory by making the first block of her 2017 Mystery Block of the Month, Goose in a Pond. You can find details for the BOM and pattern instructions. NOTE: I have modified how I made my units for this quilt block.

teaquilts What a wonderful thing to do! Thank you! Sending healing energy to her family, friends and our quilting community. We have lost a great teacher! Nancy, RIP!
Sorry to learn about Nancy Zieman's passing. She was a great tutor. Love your block.
Thank you for letting us know of Nancy's passing. She was a remarkable person
this is extra sad because this is how I learned of Nancy Zieman's death - nothing on the news whatsoever - couldn't tell you how many hours and hours for years I watched her sew and the countless things I learned - this is a nice tribute
Hello Tea, yours is the first tube lesson I have watched, sitting up in bed in the middle of the night, here in Australia, I so enjoyed watching you and would love to know what that paper is with the patterns on it, I have never seen it before. My little story, started quilting 25 years ago, made huge quilts, then quilts for children in Cambodia for several years, then baby quilts for our new hospital, then had to give up due to ill health. Sold and gave away everything, so for these years I have been going crackers, last week bought me a sew/ embroidery machine and I am utterly awestruck at how different it is in the quilting world. In between this my eldest son died aged 39, his baby brother died in my arms at 9 months, then October this year my baby son of 53 died of a heart attack. Thank God I have my sewing, thank God for people like you and the lovely lady that has left such a legacy. Please can you tell me what that is you used, the paper stuff, it makes life look much easier. God bless and keep you
Lots of love Katie
I'm praying that God sends his blessings your way. Welcome back to quilting! That paper is triangles on a roll. However, you'd have to purchase a roll for each size you need. I would recommend a CD called Half Square Triangulations as you can print what you need in any size from 1/2" to 6" finished sized in 1/8" incements. You can Google (search) for these products online.
You are a wonderful person, just as Nancy was a wonderful person. You show it in your tribute to Nancy, your compassion for Catherine North that you replied to here with your prayers for her after her having so many losses in her life. You are also very intelligent, organized & make things so clear & easy for us. God bless you....
I’ve been saving her e-mails throughout this year with the plans to make her quilt-I feel like I will have a piece of her with me. What a gracious lady who will be greatly missed. Good for you in doing this-I’ll be following your progress-I know Nancy will as well. 😥❤️
Love the block. This is a wonderful way to honor Nancy and also remember her for years to come. I have been watching Nancy's program from the beginning and much of what I know about sewing and quilting I learned from her, especially tips and easy ways of doing difficult things. The sewing and quilting community will miss her.
I have thought of her all day. I knew she was ill and that it was cancer but didn't know the extent of her illness. She'll be deeply missed and PBS won't be the same without her. A great teacher. Rest in Peace. Truly a lovely way of remembering her.
What a sweet blessing you have given all of us by making Nancy's block. She was such a kind and generous spirit. God bless and go in peace Nancy.
I have watched Nancy for many years. I feel as though I've lost a friend. May she rest in peace. Tea, thank you for this lovely tribute.
Very beautiful presentation to honor Nancy Zieman, thank you! She would love those colors!
This is so sweet of you to make this in honor of Nancy. Your piecing looks perfect. Nancy Zieman will be missed.

Thank you for honoring this wonderful lady, I have learned soo much from watching her on TV. Prayers on their way for those who loved her and suffer the loss.
Thank you so much for honoring Nancy. She would love knowing you made this block for her.
How thoughtful of you to honor her! I just found out today she passed. She will be missed.
Thank you, Tea, for the wonderful memorial of a truly gifted woman.
Thank you Tea, this was such a lovely thing to do. She will be missed so much.
I think this is the sweetest ever!!! Thank you for honoring Nancy like this. She was such a pioneer in this craft. I think we should make this and then gift it like Nancy would have!!!
I've been thinking about that!
Hi I'm a new subscriber
to your channel and would like to thank you for sharing the block in tribute to Nancy. I grew up watching and learning from her, she will be greatly missed
How very thoughtful of you. Touching gesture.
I learned a lot from Nancy Zieman through the years. She is missed. Thank you for sharing the Block Of The Month with us. I'm looking forward to trying to make this block.
May God Bless you and your family.
When perception, thoughtfulness and understanding do meet, it is then we know the blessing of togetherness. Thanks Tea for this video. Nancy (RIP) will truly be missed.
Bless her heart! When I was a much younger person, I used to watch her quilting show on TV...faithfully. Eleanor Burns also had a show. The both of them got me interested in quilting. Nancy, thank you for everything. Now, rest, you deserve it! The quilting world will miss you!
Thank you for doing this. I know many sewing enthusiasts are saddened by her passing. Watching Sewing with Nancy introduced me many aspects of garment construction, quilting, and home decoration. May God bless you.
This is a wonderful way to honor a wonderful lady, Nancy Zieman. She will be sorely missed. Thank you for doing this Tea ❤️. May she Rest In Peace.
Oh this tribute is so nice and thank you for doing this. As I mentioned to you in facebook earlier, I'm still shocked. I knew it would happened, but still shocked. Thank you!
OMG! No, I was thinking of her and wondering how she would spend her days as a retired sewing legend. Now to click in this video to find out she was critically ill and have passed away, my 💔. Thank you for honoring in such a beautiful way.
Write down the page numbers you want to print. When you get ready to print, where it says "Pages", put in your numbers, ie: 1, 10, 14, 17, 22. Those are the only pages that will print.
Thank you, I loved her show also. Your fabric choices are great.
What a lovely way to remember Nancy. I watched Nancy since her first show and learned so many great techniques and ideas. Nancy made sewing fun and she will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the Ziemen family.
Loved the video. The way you do the video is great. I think I can do this because of your video. I am going to subscribe to your site!
In memory of Nancy, I sadly offer my deepest condolences to Nancy's family, Nancy will be greatly missed, but hopefully she will continue to live through her wonderful videos.

Hi, Tea. I'm new to your channel, (and to quilting). I don't have many supplies yet and I was wondering where you got your wooden iron presser tool. Did you make it yourself? I thinks it's nifty. If it's homemade, can you suggest a similar one that I could purchase? Thank you for your time. ~Becky
Becky, you can search wooden iron to find one to purchase. The one I have was made by an ex guild member. Here is the first link I found on Google: www.softexpressions.com/software/notions/iron6.php
What a lovely thing to do.
That came out BEAUTIFUL!!! 😍😍😍
I watched your video in October 2018 and I was thinking you made this as a one year anniversary video. Great idea, what a wonderful lady, she died much to young.

I'm so sad! Nancy was a wonderful person.
Very nice of u to do that to honor her.Very sorry to hear of her passing away.
I have been learning from Nancy for as many years as she was on PBS. She was the best teacher both for quilts and dressmaking ... I'm thankful that her shows are still airing because I would miss her wisdom if they weren't. Thank you for doing her block ... your video was very well done and easy to follow ... Nancy taught you well.
Thanks Jeri!
OMG did not know. Shock, so sorry to hear this sad news.
Awesome dedication to Nancy! Thanks for the great demonstration. I did subscribe and gave a thumbs up.
Hi Julie,
I'm behind on comments. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing. I need to finish this quilt...after blocks were made, I was feeling a little sad and put it up.
RIP Nancy. I used to watch her show (and Bob Ross the artist), every chance I got. Although quilting is my thing and garment making is not, I still learned so much from her and would get so excited when she did her quilting episodes. She will be missed.
Thank you for doing this.
I love that you're honoring Nancy!
Great tribute to Nancy. Love the look of your organized studio.
Beautiful block. Love the colors. I enjoyed watching Nancy through the years.
I have watched Nancy for many years and she inspired me to fall head over heels in love with quilting. Her tutorials was done in a way that a beginner such as me could quilt anything if I had the mind to. She'll have everyone in Heaven quilting something including God & Jesus....lol....RIP Nancy.....you'll be missed.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching and listening to you. I am going to Fi d her BOM's. I love this block. You should have a quilt channel...You are so good at this. I would subscribe. Best wishes...

Just found you when searching for information on Nancy’s passing......what an absolutely wonderful idea to make something of hers in her memory......I too now want to do the same & will go find something on her website.....thank you for this.....I have liked & subscribed to your channel
Thanks Gwen for watching my video and subscribing to my channel. Have fun picking a project!
I can’t believe Nancy is gone. She is an icon. I had it on my bucket list to attend her quilt show in Madison in 2019 so I could meet her, but now I’ll have to just keep watching on screen 😪 You have inspired me to make a quilt in her name and in one of her patterns to donate to hospice. I also hope to join you in Sept to go on the MSQ retreat. Just trying to make sure the timing works. Then maybe I’ll get to meet two other quilt inspirations-you and Jenny!
Thanks for adding me (and Jenny) to your list of quilt inspirations! I do hope you will be able to attend the retreat too. I'm so looking forward to this event.
I love the way your block turned out, love that you honored Nancy in that way and so by me viewing your block of hers you allowed me to honor her too, together. You presented nicely and explain things well. Thanks!

When i went to her site yesterday it was closed with no viedos I'm so upset she was such a great teacher and so calm i will miss her
I didn't know they closed the site. Thanks for sharing. These blocks are posted on her blog.
Wonderful tribute
You are so thoughtful
Very nice, especially with the wood block iron.
Great video and tribute! Where did you get the Mystery BOM?
It's on the nancy zieman website but it's a little tricky to find. Type in nancy zieman blog or www.nancyzieman.com/blog/ and you should see a link on the right hand side of the page midway down that says 2017 Block of the Month.
I have it linked in the video description box.
So sweet.
Hi Tea. So glad you did May. I cut it out this afternoon, will sew it together Wednesday. I have January, February, March completed. I am enjoying putting these blocks together. Keep teaching. Big hugs.
Thank you so much! I'm glad someone is working on the blocks. I'm having so much fun doing them.
Thanks!
Beautiful, where did you get the paper abd cd for doing HST? Please abd Thank You
I purchased Triangulations, which is a cd with all size HSTs. You print on your own computer. However, what I'm using in this video is Triangles on a Roll, size 3" finished. You can google those and/or purchase from a quilt shop.
Where did you purchase your round rotating cutting mat?
Mary Tallant Google Brookline Revolver. I've had for too many years to remember. I think I was in Paducah at a quilt vendor.
J from 'Js knit and purl jam' directed me to your UA-cam channel. Thank you J 👍
I'm am very glad she did. You are very good, clear and enjoyable. Thank you.
Thanks so much Josie and J! I appreciate both of you.
So nice. I have many fond me. Ories of Nancy.
I clicked your link to the 2017 BOM but do not see the Goose in a Pond block there for Nov. or any other month. I'm also confused about how the BOM continued after her passing away. It goes through Dec. 2017. Not sure why I didn't find it there.
Thanks for viewing some of the videos. I don't know if the blocks are still online. I'm sure Nancy's crew had this BOM planned out a long time ago. I think they even have one for this year. I haven't checked the site in a while, but last I saw, all the previous BOMs from prior years was still on the blog.
Yes, it appeared to be a full year of blocks on the page. I just didn't find the Goose in a Pond there. Anyway, I still loved how you did your video. I am impressed & will be back.
Enjoyed the video.
Your colour choices to make the block in honour of Nancy are lovely and coordinate so well together. Your directions are easy to follow as they are clear and concise. Many thanks, Jess
Thanks Jess. I love making these blocks. It's been a while since I used large-size pieces in quilt blocks.
Thank you
So sad
