  • In today's video we check out the new Harley Benton MR Modern! We do the normal bench observations such as weighing the instrument, going over the specifications, measuring the neck thickness, and seeing how good the quality control is. For the sound demo today I used the Neural DSP Soldano plug in. If you find this helpful and ever order something from Thomann it would really help me out a lot if you used my affiliate link that's right below this.

I don't typically like these style of guitars, but at a Harley Benton price point I would be interested. It does have a certain charm to it. I hope HB keeps putting out these new designs faster and faster because I really like where this company is going.

When Thomann started the Harley B. guitar line some years ago they made some pretty unic guitar designs wich were not just straight copies.
It changed over the years when every big music dealer startet to offer cheap knock offs of the main brands cause this was what the "Newbie's" wanted.
Btw. I live about 40 minutes from Thomann.

I have this model guitar. I actually really love the sound of the pickups. In my opinion they have the highs of single coils but with fuller mids and lows. My control pots work perfectly. The only negative for me personally is the weight. Mine is also over 8 lbs. That my not be an issue for many of you but for me I prefer a guitar to be closer to 7 lbs ideally.

I'm not saying it's "bad," but don't expect Mosrite tone out of it *if* you want that; it'll never do that this way, it doesn't have the right scale length (few copy the original 24.50" scale,) and it has no neck angle.

Beautiful guitar from HB. I have the real deal in cherry red. Only thing that bums me out is that they didn't copy the zero fret pioneered by Semie Mosley. Mine should be here Monday. sunburst. Your demo is perfect for me. No regrets, just enthusiasm.
I grew up listening and playing Nokie Edwards stuff in the early '60's. always wanted one but couldn't spring the big bucks.
This design is really good and should quell my itch. Maybe I'll grab some Mosrite pickups. The originals were not P90's. They were grossly overwound, taller bobbin, alnico Semi Mosley designed creatures.
I think a couple companies make them today. I'll use the Thomann ones (Artec) for a good while, and am glad to see they designed this for what should be a drop in for P-90 style.

Harley Benton really is trying to up their game. I own 3 of their of guitars so far, and my favorite is my SC Custom Lite II. I didn't have to change a single thing, the stock pickups even sound amazing. I really like this baritone, especially that they kept to using a graphtech nut, but that body outline/indentation is just a bit overkill for me. The pickups don't sound terrible but I would likely replace at least the bridge one out. Great review and breakdown thanks for sharing! Subbed!

I would have been fine with just traditional p90s even if they weren't the same as the originals.. these pickups are very strange and I'm not entirely sure they fit the guitar for the market that would be interested in buying one... so you have to consider potentially swapping those out in the price and that raises this thing to around 600 even if you do the solder job on your own... a lot to consider at that point

@@AudiomoMusic The problem for me is that i can close my eyes and remember how an original Ventures Mosrite should sound, and this guitar is miles away from that quirky sound.

but i doubt that you ever will with this one.

why did you get the Modern one instead of the Classic? The Classic has P90s, is non splittable, and costs 250 instead of 350. Is it because of the tremolo?

Hi, I've been playing since 1962. I am embarrassed to say this is,4 the first time I've heard of a baritone guitar. I am afraid I am confused. What is the difference? I tried to buy an MR series through your link, but every one I saw in sunburst had a SB suffix. All I want is a standard, sunburst, Mosrite copy with a tremolo arm. I don care if it's Modern or Classic. The Tohmann site didn't give enough information. Could you kindly point me to both the Modern and Classic part numbers so I can place my order. BTW I will gladly buy through your link if it helps you! Also, I have subscribed to your channel Shalom/gw

A Baritone is usually of a longer scale from 26 to 29," it has thicker strings, and it's tuned lower; anywhere from A Standard to C Standard. They don't sound quite the same as a regular sized guitar that's tuned lower.

@@adrian_V99 I do like the eastwoods but it's a give and take with any of them, the stock jazzmaster style trem is pretty poor to me and I notice it's a budget part mainly because my main instrument of choice is a Jaguar so I'd be swapping that immediately, at that point the guitar is near 700 dollars, where the HB even with a pickup swap comes in at a bit less. I also really like the look of the Eastman a little bit more than the HB but it's a much more traditional instrument too. For me you can't really go wrong with either, if I see a eastwood come up locally at a decent used price I'll happily pick one up and do a direct comparison

Elephant in the room... Not sure if everyone is aware but Casino Guitars recently announced a 'Boycott' against Harley Benton. This is a UA-cam channel from a rather prominent retailer in North Carolina. The ENTIRE premise is BULLSHIT with a retailer that first of all... doesn't even sell HB guitars... placing a so call 'boycott' on them on the premise that 'they sell copies and rip off companies like Fender, Gibson and Taylor'
This is a result of HB recently releasing an acoustic that is similar to Taylor.
This is entirely marketing BS to 1- Gain viewers, 2- appease their suppliers. How do I know this? Because Casino Guitars has NO problems selling copies on their OWN website. They are an exclusive seller of John Cruz guitars which are almost exact replica's of Fenders. Hypocrisy at its finest and yet another American company hopping on the MISINFORMATION bandwagon.
I 100% support HB because THEY bring NEW players to a dying art. NO New player is gonna buy a Fender or Gibson, HB fits a well deserved market of offerinfg NEW players affordable, high quality instruments at great prices.
    BOYCOTT Casino Guitars I say!

Truth be told, without this harley benton I would have never bought a guitar of this body style as they are extremely expensive and I had no way of trying one first to see if I would like it. So really, without Harley Benton making this guitar I may have never seriously considered buying an original Mosrite but now that I know the general idea of how it will feel size wise and the general vibe I'm much more likely to pull the trigger on a vintage one if the price is right.
So really, without Harley Benton I wouldn't potentially be spending even more money on the real thing later down the road. Don't see how that isn't a double win.
