Saw him in Vegas in the mid 80s funny as hell you couldn't get away with it today at the end of his show he told us it was all an act gave out bottles of champagne to who ever he said things to Class Act
The guy could ad lib and his caustic sense of humor WAS funny. Don Rickles was one-of-a-kind kind of guy. What an audience he had that night! We'll never see the likes of them again.
Despite what Rickles said about certain stars, they were all friends, and knew he was just teasing. Even Sinatra didn't get mad when Rickles roasted him. The 1970s still had the golden age of Hollywood stars. They had class.
This is basically the birth of Don Rickles since Dean invited him to his show and told him to do whatever he wanted. After this, Don did do whatever he wanted and a great comedian became known to the rest of the country.
Greg Garrison, the producer of the Dean Martin roasts, was actually the one who wanted Don Rickles on there. Don was the only one who had the creative freedom to be himself and have fun.
This is the ultimate Don Rickles. The man skewed everybody and if he didn’t they felt left out. Just look at Dean and how hard he laughed. I grew up loving Don Rickles and I was fortunate enough to see him on his last tour with Regis Philbin at the Wiltern with Bob Newhart sitting behind me. I only wish my dad had been their with me.
We can still laugh at each other -- look at today's roasts. I don't know most of the celebrities and the humor is a bit too raunchy for my taste, but almost all of them can, and do, laugh at themselves and each other. As Will Rogers once said (approximately), the "good old days" were never as good as we remember, and the present isn't as bad as it sometimes seems.
I remember all these celebrities Don picked on. A very few of them are still alive. It was a different time when they even invited evangelicals like Pat Boone to come along and have fun. Pat was having a good time and Don didn't need to use offensive language to get laughs. I miss this era.
My favorite roast by Don Rickles was when on Dean's regular MGM roasts in Vegas on TV. Don roasted Ronald Reagan. He had Ron and Jack Benny and Dean Martin and everyone in that Vegas room literally going crazy. If you've never seen it you have missed a piece of comedy history.
Thing of it is. NOBODY said a lot about Frank & got away with it! Joking or not! Frank loved Don & vice versa & Frank proved that when he said he wouldn't perform at Regan's inaugenation unless Rickles was allowed to as well.
@@nitemare507 Inauguration, but yeah... 👍 Anybody else that insulted Sinatra, back when he was "connected", would quickly be dispatched... hopefully with only a beating! 🤣 Those were the days... 😉

Yep, he got it as far as "celebrity" goes! That's why his peers loved him so! They all realized their "celebrity" status was fleeting, as did he. He was pure genius with his jokes and timing... 👍
They don’t make them like that anymore. Loved what he said at the end. No one takes offense whenever he picked on a person. Comedy what it was meant to be.

@@billbill5326 OK, Bill..or do you go by a female name now?
@@billbill5326 you’re so clueless, everybody loved Don Rickles. The celebrities he teased loved him. Maybe you should change your name to Bore Bore.
Everyone who I've heard that knew him personally said that offstage he was the kindest, sweetest, and most generous person ever.
My brother met him and said the same thing, he picked on him during the monolouge then bought him a drink.
What was his real act? The man you see on stage or the way he was off stage?
Absolutely, he always paid back to newcomers. Never forgot his breaks.
Why does Don make me laugh so hard?
Amazing. He' was so FAST. Bob Hopes walks in. "What's Bob doing here? Is the war over."
Don Rickles is a natural anti-depressant. Perks me up every time I Watch him. Legendary.

An audience full of Hollywood legends and Don Rickles just tears them to ribbons. And it is all to the delight of everyone.

@michellepost2123. Right ... The only people who got mad are the ones he did not roast.
