I'm just as impressed as anyone by what Wemby's doing, but I'm not quite sure I agree with the expression "he will change the NBA forever". Or maybe it is that I don't understand the meaning of that expression in the first place. Let me explain: From my perspective, when a guy like Steph Curry demonstrates that shooting 10+ three-pointers per game is worth it (provided you're a capable shooter, not necessarily the greatest shooter of all time) and many teams try to reinvent their strategies to increase their 3pt shooting, THAT is changing the game. Or maybe even trying to run your playmaking through your center a la Jokic. However, in Wemby's case, I don't quite see how other teams can try to incorporate his playstyle because, well, he is not doing anything new; it's "just" that it is unprecedented to see such a huge human being performing those moves because bigger people tend to be "clumsier". My point is that not because Victor can make moves historically associated to smaller players will the teams start to use big men doing such stuff (no one else can and that's precisely Wemby's value, whereas many players are capable 3pt shooters and teams can attempt more of those shots), thus I don't think he will change the NBA even if he ends up retiring as the undisputed GOAT. Again, maybe I just misunderstood what people mean when they talk about changing the NBA.
Guys, it’s ok to get hyped about the preseason. Really if your hype is unjustified you will not be charged with a crime for it. I keep seeing these lukewarm “let’s remember it’s just the preseason” takes. Everyone online is afraid of being wrong about something like they’re an NBA analyst with a reputation to uphold. Wemby is a ridiculously good midrange shooter. Over in France, he was far and away the best from the midrange, and compared to NBA players only DeRozan and Durant were more accurate. I agree with your enthusiasm because Wemby is definitely a unicorn, just like Wilt was. But Wilt was very different than Victor. Just to start, Wilt was more athletic (50" vertical vs Wemby's 32") and much more powerful. Victor is slight of build and plays much more of a finesse game. There are probably some 10 year old kid already 6ft destined to grow to well over 7ft who are watching him and dedicating their life to basketball with 9billion people in the world. Growing to 7ft or above is actually not that rare in Sudan so would not be surprised to see some more players like him in the next decade.

Literally every stat is maxed out, the only issue is insanely high chance of injury at that height, I fully expect him to snap very soon, but if that guy stays healthy yeah he's a GOAT..

look i understand wanting to give players time to acclimate to the league, but if you don’t see the immense potential that wemby has then you’re blind. its ok to hype up a unique prospect when they’ve shown this much promise.

@@patrickhanlon2325 i feel you, too many people put way too much pressure onto young athletes and people should def be aware of that. in this situation with wemby though, im willing to hype him up bc he seems like the real deal. at one point in time kareem and lebron were just prospects who were hyped up to be great and they went above and beyond everyone’s expectations, and i genuinely feel like wemby is the same caliber of talent.
in general i 100% agree that people put too much pressure on young players but in this case with wemby i think it’s appropriate bc of how unique and talented he already is.
I think people are just amazed he’s done stuff we’ve seen nobody do in every preseason/summer league game he’s been in. It’s more excitement than anything
I'm just as impressed as anyone by what Wemby's doing, but I'm not quite sure I agree with the expression "he will change the NBA forever". Or maybe it is that I don't understand the meaning of that expression in the first place. Let me explain:
From my perspective, when a guy like Steph Curry demonstrates that shooting 10+ three-pointers per game is worth it (provided you're a capable shooter, not necessarily the greatest shooter of all time) and many teams try to reinvent their strategies to increase their 3pt shooting, THAT is changing the game. Or maybe even trying to run your playmaking through your center a la Jokic.
However, in Wemby's case, I don't quite see how other teams can try to incorporate his playstyle because, well, he is not doing anything new; it's "just" that it is unprecedented to see such a huge human being performing those moves because bigger people tend to be "clumsier".
My point is that not because Victor can make moves historically associated to smaller players will the teams start to use big men doing such stuff (no one else can and that's precisely Wemby's value, whereas many players are capable 3pt shooters and teams can attempt more of those shots), thus I don't think he will change the NBA even if he ends up retiring as the undisputed GOAT. Again, maybe I just misunderstood what people mean when they talk about changing the NBA.
Guys, it’s ok to get hyped about the preseason. Really if your hype is unjustified you will not be charged with a crime for it. I keep seeing these lukewarm “let’s remember it’s just the preseason” takes. Everyone online is afraid of being wrong about something like they’re an NBA analyst with a reputation to uphold. It’s basketball guys. It’s a game. You’re allowed to have a little fun with it. You’re not being graded. Allow yourself to feel hyped about something. If he disappoints that’s ok too. Yes he’s human. Yes he has limitations. Yes tall guys are prone to injury. But let’s all just take a deep breath, have some fun overreacting to games, and just remember not to get toxic and put undue pressure on the kid. He’s allowed to fail. You’re allowed to hype. It’s all going to be ok.
Everyone freaked out when he was ranked like 55th or whatever by ESPN cause he "hasnt played a minute of NBA ball" and I was like... if he plays most of this season, that ranking might seem low.

Wemby is a ridiculously good midrange shooter. Over in France, he was far and away the best from the midrange, and compared to NBA players only DeRozan and Durant were more accurate.
This has shown in preseason too. He can get to his spots and knock ‘em down he already has something better than that bank shot.

I agree with your enthusiasm because Wemby is definitely a unicorn, just like Wilt was. But Wilt was very different than Victor. Just to start, Wilt was more athletic (50" vertical vs Wemby's 32") and much more powerful. Victor is slight of build and plays much more of a finesse game. Honestly, I don't know who to compare Wemby to. He is really one-of-a-kind.
