Quid pro quo - something for something - I’ll gladly trade the labour of doing the roof for the beauty of those streamliners. I wouldn’t mind stopping to do the roof in a Carrera GT,, Koenigsegg, , 918 Spyder, Dino 246 Spyder, Ferrari F50. Lamborghini Diablo, Pagani, and 911 Speedster., etc - The Spyder’s humps and roof sails are part of its beauty. I don’t think the Boxster from front, side, or back look as good as Spyder - of course all subjective. But glad I bought the Spyder - brilliant sports car. Thanks for doing the video and demonstrating how quickly it goes up and down once you get the hang of it.
Much rather enjoy the 20 seconds of added 'charm' (call it inconvenience if you want to) with the manual roof operation if it means less weight and that the trunk lid completely covers the fabric top so that you get the looks of a baby Speedster.
One of the things that drives me nuts about the US Spyder was that Porsche was so worried we’d pinch our fingers or something that you can’t latch the roof from the key. You can unlatch it from the key, but you can’t latch it. So annoying - to leave the car, you flop the roof up and get back in and turn the key to on and use the buttons in the center stack to latch it.
Very good video - I was wondering if there had to be a quicker way than ALL the other videos I'd seen. Others seem to have made it a point of saying its a bad thing to manually put the roof up and down - whilst at the same time saying how great the car and the convertible aspect is...can't have it both ways and it wouldn't be a Spyder if it had a metal folding roof. It makes sense to me to have a 'more' manual roof - adds to the style and overall feel of the car. Could be my next car. Alternatives are a 911 Carrera, Boxster GTS or Cayman GTS.
I can testify to how much easier this is compared to the 987 version which required you to completely remove both the top and rear window sections. Apart from saving weight it means less potential component expenditure that electric roofs can incur should anything go wrong.
Happy to hear Jona! And congrats on the new car! Make sure to have a look at the video about the remote as well unless you already found the key-trick to open the roof. :)
Nobody tells you two things: 1.. The roofs latching edge has to be 'touching' close to the front windshield frame top for the latch to electrically activate. 2. To latch the roof shut, you have to have the visors down (as if blocking the sun). Otherwise, the visors , in the regular stow away up position, will get in the way and the latch will go into closed position without latching. Capish?
1 Correct but after some time the fabric stretches and it does this every time. :) 2. Not correct. If your car does this it’s time to take it back to Porsche. It works fine with the visors in any position.
good video thanks, but.... during the first six months my roof was almost impossible to close without someone to help press it down onto the windscreen top, the hook would not engage, its better now as the fabric has stretched, also the roof is heavy to lift out of its enclosure, it does my back in very time, (I am 64 years old mind !), also any water collected on the rear deck will drain into the car when you lift it, so yes the roof works but remains a pain for me personally.
I completely understand and agree with you Roger. The roof is a pain, but still not as weirs as many people said in the beginning. And as you say, experienced in the beginning. ;) I found that a two hand grip (one i the back of the roof) helps a lot when lifting it in place. What do you think of the insulation? Or lack of it. As an owner, can you please tell me about how the cylinder shut off effects the car and driving? No reviewers seem to comment on it? Also, is the ride quality smooth enough for a daily driver? I live in San Diego and think this is the PERFECT CAR! Appreciate your comments.
Hi Kenneth, I often use the Spyder and I love it. In germany I would not use it as a daily driver, because the manual operated roof and the manual gear shifting. The suspension is sporty, also a fact that I would not choose for a daily driver - I think it depends on the distance and the quality of the roads you usually travel. I have the normal seats which give back a lot of comfort. The rest of the car is perfectly suitable for a daily driver when transportation space ist not required. The cylinder shut off makes the car sound different, which is the only effect and doesńt bother me. You can stop the shut off by turning off the start/stop system.
@@constantinh.6592 thanks! I’m in Sam Diego, and I don’t have any bad traffic. So I’m considering a daily driver. Plus, the weather is perfect here for convertibles.

The option of seats makes a big difference in these. 18-way seats might be a good option, or you go hardcore and do the 918-spyder seats that are great. :) About the cylinder deactivation. I think Porsche had to do this for emissions-certification. I always run it turned off as the same button actually control the start/stop functionality. I actually always activate Autoblipp and loud exhaust and turn off auto start/stop + cyl deactivation every time I start the car and then rather use the buttons on freeways to turn “off” the exhaust and “turn on” cyl-deactivation. So rather thinking of the functions the other way around if that makes sense. When it comes to the functionality of the cylinder deactivation I don’t see much difference in fuel consumption.
