Turning an Irish Red Deer antler fountain pen / Wood Turning

- Turning deer antler on a wood lathe is an interesting project and a fountain pen is one of the classic turnings. It has been a number of years since I had the opportunity to turn antler due to the difficulty acquiring it. With it's size project design can be somewhat limited. Pens, rings small finials and knobs are among the obvious ones. In this video I turn an executive fountain from Irish Red Deer antler which has it's own difficulties and tricks on how to handle the porous marrow. I show my method in this video.

Wood turning can be a dangerous hobby. My videos show my methods of turning and if you do not feel comfortable with my methods please do not copy them but rather use a method you feel comfortable using. Your safety is your responsibility as is the safety in your workshop. Enjoy the videos, hopefully something inspires you or helps you along the way.

Great work Shay
Cheers Mark. I hope you are liking the one you got mate.
Shay
@@BBTurning i have it up for my partner. I'm sure she'll love it.
Hopefully she will mate.
Shay
Beautiful!!!
Thank you Shannon.
Shay
Beautiful. Love turning antler pens. Hate the stink though.
I didn't notice much of a smell Doug, could be something to do with the Lyme disease, but I still wore a mask anytime there was dust.
Shay.
Beautiful pen and a great job turning it
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thanks Oneshot, I hope you are enjoying the bog oak pen from the giveaway.
Shay.
First time I turned one down the wife got in late and thought I had a dead body in the shop.. lol
The smell from this one was not too bad at all, it had been sitting in a shed for a few years before I got it though so maybe that is why or it could be the lyme disease has wrecked my sense of smell.
Shay
hey shay i had to get a new tablet so i had to subscribe again just to let u know my friend. chris
Thanks Chris, very much appreciated.
Shay
Never thought of using antler for pens and that's a really lovely pen and very unique. 🙂❤
Mentioning pens I must make a few more of my Model T Ford Hickory wheel spoke pens and make another video .
You must indeed Tee, those Ford pens you make are great.
Shay
Very nice Shay. The final gloss you achieved is pretty good considering there’s no ‘finish’ other than the Brasso.
Cheers Jim, after trying loads of different finishes I think brasso on antler and resin is one of the best, not so good on wood though. I am not sure how the American version of brasso would work as it is a totally different formulation to the Irish brasso.
Shay
it is a beauty Shay ....a credit to you to show us how to turn antler ..but the big question ..is it expensive and where do you get it ..knowing you, you know someone who know someone who know someone ...........keep safe
It is not cheap Gerard, leave it with me and I will see what I can do.
Shay
@@BBTurning you are too kind Shay
Not a problem Gerard.
Shay
Hi Shay, Fantastic video and I learned a lot about using antler. I have heard it smells terrible as well. Keeping this video for the time if I ever get some.
Take care Shay and the pen is stunning.
Cheers, Huw
It does Huw, especially if it is fresh. This one had been sitting in a shed for a couple of years before I bought it so it was not bad. I will still recommend that a mask be worn when cutting and sanding even if there is no smell.

@@BBTurning Hi Shay, Just bought a couple of pieces on eBay for under £9. I'll give it a go and if it goes wrong not too much expense to loose
You did well at that price mate. Good luck with it. Any question just give me a bell.
Shay
Absolutely beautiful Shay. We dont have deer here like you guys. I wonder how to get a piece of that Antler here? Hmmm.... Great looking pen 😁👍🏼👏
Cheers Japie.
Shay
I would have never known that was previously an antler.
It feels like polished stone if that makes any sense Andy.
Shay
@@BBTurning It's just I have never seen anything that looks like that. I wonder if it's possible to turn the tip of a bull's horn into fountain pens?
@@AndyFromBeaverton If the tip is solid I dont see why it would not work Andy. If you have access to some bulls horns give it a go and see what happens. It could open a whole new medium for turning pens. HAve you seen this weeks video, it's the 4000 subscriber giveaway and I am giving away one of these pens.
Shay
@@BBTurning Yep, that's why I'm posting on this older video. From your link.
That is beautiful my friend, I have just started to turn pens and love your content. I know it's a bit crass but what would you charge for a pen like that. Feel free not to say. I am close to retirement and would love to make this a way for some pocket money.
Not a problem at all Garry, the antler fountain pens go for €120 and they are hard to keep in stock at that price.
Shay
Great looking pen Shay, what was the kit?
Over here it is called the executive Brent, I believe it has other names depending on where you get it. If you have a look at the English walnut fountain pen video I use the same kit and there is a closer look at the kit in that video and it might help identify the local name for you.
Shay
Enjoyed this video, thanks for sharing and for the tip. Please inform your social media manager that you did get the important thumbs up and of course you have a new sub. Let the journey begin
Thank you for the sub Conor and I will indeed tell my social media manager and avoid getting a "Daaaaad you did it wrong again" coupled with the look of destain.
Shay
Very nice finish Shay. Are those antlers from Killarney Park deer?
They are mate. The tree surgeon I get wood from who works there finds them and sells them to me.
Shay
That's great to have that, makes a nice story to go with each piece. It's great to be able to work with local materials.
It is indeed, I am lucky to get them.
Shay
The pen is beautiful, why do you use CA to fill in the holes instead of ...say epoxy, or some other type of hardener? As you can tell I have never done anything like this but it looks like good fun and there looks to be some learning curve to it also. Very interesting.
The answer is twofold really. 1 resin basically takes too long to cure and would require a mould. 2 The idea of using the CA to create a slurry works this way. When you put the CA on it not only hardens the marrow but also goes into the holes. When you immediately start sanding you take the CA off the surface leaving the CA that is in the holes. As you are sanding you create dust which goes into the holes and is caught by the CA in them. It then goes solid filling the holes. It is very quick as you saw in the video and has the added bonus of the holes being filled with antler which makes it a true antler pen and not a hybrid of antler and resin. I hope that explains it.
Shay.
Gorgeous pen Shay!
Have you ever used whitetail deer antler? Wasn’t sure if you had whitetail deer in Ireland or not. I’ve seen it done before but, haven’t done it myself. Would be interesting to compare side by side!
Glad to see you getting some use out of that pen press kit! 😂 Great video, buddy!
No Seth I have not, I don't think we have them here. Red deer are the, main ones in Ireland. I am loving the kit Seth, again thanks for sending it mate, very much appreciated.
Shay
@@BBTurning It was my pleasure, buddy!
Your drill will follow the path of least resisstance, marrow, and when its drilled the hole will be oversized.
No Denis, it drills straight if you do not go too fast, and use a very sharp bit I have done hundreds of Antler pens and have never drilled an oversized hole. If you keep it slow enough you will be fine.
Shay
Great job well done 👍where do you get your pen kits from, again nicely turned 👌
It depends on the kit William, if I am buying in bulk I use penkitsmall, if I just want a few or a single kit then I use either the carpentry store here is Ireland or penkitsandbits in England. If you want to use penkitsandbits they don't deliver to Ireland so you need a friend in the UK who will accept a delivery for you and send it on.
Shay
@@BBTurning thank you 👌
You are welcome William.
Shay
Hope you enjoyed the smell lol... I have just had an order for another one and I hate the smell 😁
I didn't notice the smell when turning it and had a mask on the rest of the time 😷😷😷 so no smell.
Shay
Awesome job Shay, that's a beautiful pen! Keep up the good work 👍 Take care mate!
Cheers Tim.
Shay
I wonder 🤔 why you are drilling with a chuck if there is a much better and easier way to drilling antlers. Just asking 😌
To make sure the hole is straight Richard. What is the easier way, you have me intrigued.
Shay.
@@BBTurningLook at this UA-cam video from Mark Dreyer
I have seen Marks videos before Richard , the method he uses works well but i don't have the pen clamp he uses.
Shay.
@@BBTurning No worries Shay, this pen clamp is just an expensive luxury and not necessary. I use instead a strip of leather about 60mmx30mmx2.5mm and a simple Water Pump Pliers and that's it. Total cost under 10 bugs. Just hold it tight and you are good to go!
@@richardherzog4890 i must look into that Richard.
