    Tunnels add character to the railroad. They show just how hard it was to build the line through the terrain. Oh well, out with the old, in with the new!

    Tunnel 19 was demolished with explosives & diggers. Then a cutting was built which is in use today.

      Why was it demolished?
      To increase the loading gauge on the line?

    I wish we could do this in Australia through the Adelaide Hills, open it up for double stacks!

    It seems like a lot of work and expense just to open out a tunnel. I would've thought they would take away more material before imploding the tunnel so that the clean up would be quicker.

    I'm surprised they didn't do this when they originally laid the track. Digging a tunnel can be a lot more difficult than making a cutting.

      No, in that times, they had no powerful hydraulic diggers, and without them is making the cutting more difficult then tunneling.

    I remember when they still ran steam passenger trains until 1972

    It was better to raise the tunnel than cutting the course. Cutting means landslides.

    There has been so satisfactory answer given to the question: "why .... why did the tunnel have to be dug out? " (It's not as though they're running double stack container trains through the cutting now).

      Just a guess maybe with earthquakes and what looks like old tunnel might be a liability.

      The loading gauge did look a little tight...

    Does anyone know why?

    • @paulfoster1858
      @paulfoster1858 3 роки тому

      Due to geology , the tunnel lining was degraded, monitoring and repairs would be expensive, and it removed one of the capacity restraints on the route. ( They had already removed a similar tunnel in the North Island, so this was done similar

    Why did they do that ? Looks like a lot of work.

      Various reasons - tunnel in poor condition, portals could collapse in earthquake, or loading gauge too small for containers or modern locomotives. To increase loading gauge choice is between 'daylighting' and lowering the floor of the tunnel. Choice would depend on relative costs and possibly environmental factors. In 1960's the floors were lowered in a series of 19th century tunnels between Pukerua Bay and Paekakariki north of Wellington. This was done to accommodate commonly used DA diesel electrics. It had a bonus several years later when shipping containers became common as the modified tunnels could accommodate the containers without further work. There is a frequent commuter service on this line and the views are fantastic.

    good job, so much better after..not smart at the beginning & they should do the same, instead of dig the tunnel....
