They did have the COPs added and the controllers upgraded by Fujitec in 1997, but still were otherwise left original, and while they were mostly automatically driven, they still required operators to start the motor and respond to calls, but they still had a Manual mode. Since this video was taken though, Thyssenkrupp completely automated them. I got a video in March of 2018 when they were in the process of being modded
