My optician recommended going outdoors for three reasons: 1. Oxygen. We need fresh air and oxygen, as well as our eyes. 2. Physical activity (even if it’s mild like strolling). It makes our blood system work harder and encourages blood to go into every small blood vessel including eyes. 3. Eye muscles training. When we are outdoors, we have that near-and-far eye movement and adjustment, which makes our crystalline lens actually work and not be stuck in one position when we only look at something that is near. That one is pretty important, there are special eye exercises doing exactly the same; but when we are outdoors it happens naturally.
Funny story, I had a new peds patient today who was -1.00 according to her previous records, but today she was an easy 20/20 uncorrected and said she hates to wear her glasses. Came to the conclusion through more testing that she was just over-minused by her previous doctor. She couldnt have been happier to walk out of the office with no glasses needed!
Antonio, the man did not state she was over minused but rather he made up his own opinion and conclusion on that, so it isn't fact and you shouldn't be going around spreading conclusions as facts.
I'd be interested in you making a video about vision changes during puberty! I had perfect eyesight as a child, but I developed myopia and astigmatism during puberty
I really liked that you brought scientific articles! As a child I grew up climbing trees and going to the beach, but at 14 I started wearing glasses (-0,25 and -0,5). My younger brother, though, was that type of kid more into tv and videogames. At 8 he was diagnosed with -1,5 myopia in each eye. Our parents also wear glasses. Im 25 now, last time i checked I had -3,25, my brother (19 yo) -4,5, we both still progressing
@@decadewgame9802 yep. Actually, few months after I made this comment I went to a doctor to check, now my glasses are -4,75 and -5,00 🫠 and I also have astigmatism
I can't deal with this. I don't want to get older. I don't want to lose my f****** eyesight. I said, I use it for so much. I used for my painting. I used for my video games every single hobby I do I use my eyes on my hands. I can't f****** lose my eyes, man.
Read about the Bates method. Read Relearning to see - improve your eyesight naturally. Remember optometrists have no incentive to fix your myopia. To them you are just a lifetimes worth of glasses.
I'm in my early 30s and my myopia is still progressing since childhood. I had a corrected crossed eye when I was 5 in my left eye, have astigmatisim in my right eye and latent nystagmus in both. I've also noticed in the last few years that I have double vision if I'm not using correctives. So I'm thinking that it's a combonation of all these things that my myopia continues to progress lol
90% by age 21.. awesome. here i am, 37 years old , needed glasses since iam 6 or 7 still, iam getting another -0.25 added every 2 years and always hear "well, youre the exeption to the rule" as if that helps or makes it any better. as kid, a had a lot of outdoor time, yet my eyes got worse, since iam working, i way more insight doing near work but it didn progress faster. my wife was bookworm all her life, always indoor and only spends times infront of a book or computer but has 20/20
i’m genuinely scared of the people with -3 out there who don’t wear glasses not even to drive. don’t wear them if you don’t want to, but my god someone will get injured if they continue that way
Thank you for acknowledging this! While we can't cure myopia, we can reduce it by direct (especially morning) sunlight & focus-change exercises. Studies also show that Asians work & go to school several more hrs/day, w/less downtime & playtime.
The reason is mainly because of our surroundings, genetics is only a bit of factor(not as imp as the first), people are encouraged to go outdoors because you would naturally always be looking at a distance, therefore the surroundings do not make us lose the ability of distant looking. It is very important with young children and infants especially, as that's typically the time where they spend alot of time indoors, and once they get myopia they can never reverse it, so this is imp for parents with newborns..prevention is always better than cure(except we dont have a cure, lasik isn't natural so that doesnt count either). I've seen people who wear glasses yet none of their parents does, and vice versa but its more common in the first scenario as we have things like mobile phones and computer nowadays which makes people spend alot of time indoor and less outdoor.
My sight was getting worse and worse each year until the age of 18 when it stopped at -7 the day I bought my first contact lenses (glasses were already too heavy). Now I'm almost 38 and still wearing the same prescription. My doc says it happens with contact lenses. Edit: I recently visited an ophthalmologist, she wrote out a prescription for new, weaker (!!!) glasses, but my astigmatism has slightly increased. And at the end of the visit, she referred me to the hospital because of a retinal detachment, which surprised me the most, because I haven't spotted anything odd.
Two doctors examined me thoroughly, it turned out, it was not a retinal detachment, but strong degenerative changes, thinning and (yet) self-scaring retinal atrophy, typical for the high myopic eye. So the laser is not necessary for now, although anything can happen.
I've been wearing contacts since age 12 (used soft contacts until age 24/25 and then switched to rigid contacts due to irritation), I'm 26 now and my sight has not stopped worsening, although it did slow down after puberty
My moderate myopia which occured when I was 11 began quickly worsening just after I started wearing corrective lenses when I was 18, my eyes worsened to -5 until stabilised by the age 26, when I was 28 I had lasik which liberated me from glasses and contacts.
Hello, I binge watch or listen to your video while im on a break from upskilling. Often thTs from 2pm-3pm And then you said, "the amount of light in tour eyes and the distance".... That brought me back to Mr. Huberman's podcast that said, "if you're looking at a screen, take a break every15 mins. and look at the horizon And every morning, have "sunlight exposure" for at least 5 mins. Look into the horizon where there is sunlight but DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY INTO THE SUNLIGHT ☝🏽he said that would greatly adjust your body clock and it signals to your brain that it is day time & night time. I wasnt aware tht habit would also help prevent something qith our eyes. Thank you for making me realize so many things 😘
Had +1,5 diopters at 17, now in my final year of dental school at 25 I’m at -1,75 and I can basically link every 0,5 diopter Progression to one exam season.
I started at -1 at the age of 12 it progressed until it reached -6 around 25-30 year old, now at 44 it has gone down to -1.5 -2 and it continues to go down every year, very unusual they say
I'm 28 and have been using glasses since 4th grade (though I probably needed them before that lol). I "started" With -3 and -8 (+astigmatism in both eyes) and now I'm in -6 and -11. In my case, I practised different sports through all my childhood but I guess that couldn't beat my genetics, (mom and grandma both had high myopia). Thankfully, it's been stable for 7 years now :)
I’ve had glasses since 3rd grade, should have had em in first. I’m now a -9 in one and -9.5 in the other, and it has changed every year getting worse and worse
I never wore my glasses with -1 except while driving and to read the blackboard. I wear +0.50 glasses while reading long time and 15 years later my prescription is still -1. Friends that wore the glasses all the time and started the same have now over -3
My myopia was detected when i was in 5th class, with -2.5,,,, then 3 years later whesn i was in class 8 it jumped to -4.00,,,, then each year it continues to increase almost -1.00 every year,,,, now i am 19 years old and my left eye has -6.00 and right eye has -7.00,,,,, I am very much afraid becouse of it,,,,, i pray that it stop increasing by 21..! I badly want to be the part of that 90% people who's myopia stopped at the age of 21 😭please pray for me.I dont want to lose my eyes.
Thanks for the video. I'm 34 years old and currently at -5.75 at both eyes. It's gotten progressively worse over the years. I'm finding myself going to my optician and getting stronger glasses 😑
don't wear stronger glasses, or atleast be aware if you got overprescription. Pay attention to your headaches with new glasses, that's 99% a sign of overprescription
I never played outside and that made my eyes go worse i am 15 and my eyes are currently -6 and -6.5 . my main problem was my posture . but since the day I started playing outdoors and sleeping also included drinking more and water . my myopia has slowed down a little . So , start playing outside chads !
I know someone whose vision is still getting worse. She's almost 30 and been wearing glasses since she was a kid. She really wants lasik surgery but can't at the moment because of this
I started developing myopia at around 12 years of age. At the age of 21 I had -2.25 dpt in both my eyes. 10 years later, now at 31, I have -2.25 dpt in both my eyes. Got ICLs implanted a week ago and now my myopia has been corrected.
Great video, Antonio. I agree I think myopia progression ceases around mid twenties but you still get those who progress. Reducing near tasks and increasing outdoor time - great ways to prevent. OrthoK is my favourite way to reduce progression. It's like magic for patients and there is immediate feedback when skipping a day of treatment.
Hey Shivan! Yeah I agree, have seen some people in their 40s still progress which is the most bizarre thing 😆 OrthoK is excellent option I feel, although some ophthalmologists seem to be against it due to the rate of infection 🤷🏼
I started with -1 at 18. After the university years and my PhD, I was -4.🤷🏻♀️ My condition hasn't changed much since then. Did I pay for my knowledge with this?🙄
Well I've been wearing glasses for around one decade now, and I'm really glad that I have a tendency to go outside even just strolling around my city, riding my motorcycles here and there, or simply walk in botanical park and sit there basking in early morning sunlight while reading some books and accompanied by tea.
Saw a reddit post that claimed their parents wouldn't buy them glasses as a child because, "Glasses will make your eyes lazy," and they instead needed to teach/force their eyes to work better.
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, occurs when the eye elongates, and rays of light entering the eye are focused in front of the light-sensitive retina rather than directly on it. This causes blurry distance vision. Over one third of our children, although born with normal vision, become nearsighted during their school years. Research by Francis A. Young, Kenneth H. Oakley, Ira Schwartz, N. Elaine Sandberg, Frank Schaeffel, Adrian Glasser, Howard C. Howland, Desmond Cheng, etc. proves directly/indirectly that after doing prolonged close work, the focusing muscle inside the eye locks up into a state of near focus. Over time this leads to permanent nearsightedness, an abnormal lengthening of the eye. The wearing of distance or minus power (concave) glasses aids the vision of myopes by bringing everything closer so that distant objects are within the range of focus. A book may still be held at arm's length but from a focusing standpoint it has now been moved closer to the eyes. This begins a vicious circle which soon results in the need for stronger glasses. Increasing amounts of effort are necessary to focus each time the power of the glasses is increased. Knowing this wouldn’t it then not be logical to put a strong plus lens on children for all close work, to totally eliminate focusing effort?
"Knowing this wouldn’t it then not be logical to put a strong plus lens on children for all close work, to totally eliminate focusing effort?" You are exactly right about this. It's common to prescribe a bifocal in children whose myopia is increasing to quickly. And of course, a bifocal has a less minus/more plus Rx at the bottom of the lens for close work.
@@Akira-jd2zr Are bifocals a good alternative? Bifocals are a combination of reading glasses and distance glasses. The upper portion of the glasses contains distance (minus) lenses and the lower portion contains reading (plus) lenses. Bifocals are not recommended because the child is likely to use the distance lenses in the upper half of the glasses for close work, thereby further elongating the eye and causing irreversible myopia. As an example, when using a computer, the child may use the lower portion to look at the keyboard, but will almost certainly use the upper portion to look at the screen.
Incredibly interesting. I have worn glasses since I was 7 years old. My myopia stabilised around -7 in my right eye, and around -4 in my left eye, when I was 18-20. Now I am nearly 24, and my myopia has worsened to nearly -9 in my right eye, and -6 in my left eye (with worsened astigmatism). It's a worry. Luckily, I have been able to drive and judge distance accurately, but the peripheral distortion has become noticeably worse with my most recent prescription.
I stopped wearing glasses 3 months ago and my eyes are improving. I do go out everyday for 2 hours a day and do distance vision. I can now see the ground beneath my feet clearly as I walk. I can now see individual blades of grass. I am 61 and have worn glasses since I was 16.
I'm 14 and have -10 and -8.50 myopia as well as astigmatism - it's been developing quicker these last 3 years, and ever since I was about 8 I had -5 and -5.50, this terrified me even more, since I'm constantly in a state of anxiety when I think about my eyesight. I was told my first time at the Optometrist (?) that once I reach puberty it will most likely get better, to my surprise it was the opposite of that, family started blaming it on my phone and even that's mostly like true, I believe there's more factors to that, plus I was myopic from birth, and when I was 8 it still was really high and I barely used any devices back then. It really doesn't help my worries when the people around tell you "you know you'll go blind one day at this point" when there's still some hope for it to improve in the future, or at least stop getting worse. I'm terrified of surgery tho, so once I'll be able to get it, I don't think I'll can.
Hey! Do not worry, I have myopia since 8 and now Im 22 and I dont visit an ophthalmologist for about 2 and a half years When I hit puberty my vision started to go worst, felt like I needed a new pair of glasses every 6 months, but as soon as pimples stopped appearing my myopia slowed down Im 100% sure that you'll get better, and dont listen to those saying that using the phone is bad, I used ALOT of computers back in my puberty and my myopia still slowed down when I became an adult.
I wore glasses my entire adult life. My vision was around 20/200. Four years ago, I went on a low carb diet and low and behold, my vision drastically improved. One eye is now 20/30, the other is 20/40.
Myopia could be genetic in some people, but its rise in recent generations suggests a very significant change in lifestyle. The strong shift towards indoors/online activities is among the most likely culprits. That implies a strong need to move education away from predominantly indoors to predominantly outdoors, especially in children. Also less homework and generally less time spent reading.
80% of people under 18 in S. Korea have developed myopia in recent years. It is NOT genetic. That is a lie spread by optometrists to resign yourself to glasses for the rest of your life.
at my last eye appointment the doctor said there was no real change from my last appointment...which was 10 years before... so i guess i am really lucky!
I'm curious if the whole looking at far away stuff more often resulting in less myopia has something to do with the eye muscles and/or eye orientation in the skull that is impacting their growth development? With close things your eyes look out more parallel but with closer stuff like books, monitors, etc the eyes are in a more slightly cross eyed position. Perhaps this long term position change/tension with specific muscles is what results in the development of myopia otherwise I can't fathom how the changes in focus distances of the lenses inside the eye would somehow result in the eye's growth changes to that degree. There's also the angle of the optic nerve coming out of the back of the eyes to take into account too. Perhaps while looking at closer things this results in just a little bit of extra tension on the back of the eye balls from that and over the coarse of years the eye growth can become impacted by that? That's just my uneducated theory about it as I was watching this though so take it with a grain of salt. :P
Read the Bates method. He says exactly that. The shape of the eye adapts to the image presented to it. Over time when continuously looking at close up the eyes lengthen causing myopia. While continually looking in the distance causes the eye to shorten causing presbyopia. Read books on the Bates method
@@savvasgamingchannel5062 presbyopia isn't caused by this reason but the fact that as you get old, the eyes lose the flexibility to focus correctly. it's a completely irrelevant condition that everyone will get after some point in their lives, no matter how good your health is. about myopia, its true that what the commenter above says and added to that, there's also a genetic factor playing a role as well as cases to where the eye doesn't grow correctly and causes these refractive errors. its like for instance, some people having deformed nasal passages, which I also had, until they get a surgery for it.
Hello Antonio, I just want to tell you that EYE like your videos. I Just started 6 months ago with the study to become a optician. And the way you speak and show pictures is realy pleasing to lissen. I'm from the Nederlands and just started the subject astigmatism. Do you have a video about that subject? I will recommend you to nu fellow students! Keep up the good work!
Hey Paul! Thanks for the feedback! I do have a video on astigmatism, although it’s one of my earlier videos so the quality might be a bit different haha
I've had myopia since childhood, hereditary. Very blurry on my left eye, and "ok" on the right. Left eye also had strabismus that corrected itself with time. I hated using glasses as a child, and they didn't really improve my vision that much. I was around university when I got my first correct prescription (around -4 to -5) and it was like "whoa i didn't know it was possible to see so clearly". But that's mainly on my right eye, my left eye still is blurry no matter what prescription I get. I also use the computer pretty much all day so I don't think that helps lmao.
Omg, my left eye has also always seen blurry no matter what. When I got my first glasses at age 13 I had -1 on my left and 0 on my right eye my first reaction was: "Wait a minute, but why do I still see blurry?". Since the glasses disappointed me, I hardly ever used them. When I was 18 I noticed that my right eye got worse, so I got -0.5 on my right eye, and my left eye was still -1, but I still couldn't see properly with them. All doctors and optometrists just measured -1 on my bad left eye with a little astigmatism, but my prescription didn't change from -1 for 10 years! When I was 23 I decided to undergo eye surgery on my left eye, because it drove me crazy that my right eye worsend, because my left eye couldn't do it's job. At this point I didn't care about negative side effects on my left eye, because I didn't care about my left eye too much. The doctors were not okay with me getting eye surgery at first, but ultimately they could understand my concerns and I checked up with three different doctors to make sure I made the right decision. It's been a year after the eye surgery now. Don't get me wrong, my prescription is a Zero now and I see so much better, I loved having done this surgery and I don't regret it one bit, but no joke, my right eye is -1 now and still a lot more reliable. I just did one of the eye sight tests where you read out of a book from a distance and my left eye (although a 0) performed worse than my (now) myopic -1 right eye. Before surgery I thought it was because of the astigmatism, but since it's been corrected with the laser and three different doctors measured perfect vision, I now think it's because of my brain. Talking with the doctors a lot, I learned so much about how our vision works and why I have the perception of bad vision on my left eye. I think my brain just doesn't process the signals of my left eye as well as my right, that's why it can't see perfectly no matter the distance. But my subjective perception can't be measured by a machine, that's what the doctors told me. I'm fine with my eyes now, I just hope that my right eye doesn't get worse anymore.... :'(
My vision dropped very rapidly to like -1/-2 (don't remember the number, but it's bad enough to be inconvenient, especially in low light, but still good enough to live without glasses) when i was 14 or 15 and i was very scared, but now i'm 25 and it basically haven't changed at all and i'm still not resorting to glasses, even though i'm basically permanently staring at a monitor in low light. Does this mean i have bad genetics, or good genetics?
mate..its better to get it checked and use a prescription glass. Anything around -1 and above needs correction or else it can bring strain in eyes, headche and can gradually decrease your vision.
@@deatheater4805 he saved his eyes by not wearing glasses. I was prescribed -1 at 14 years old and only used the glasses to drive and watch the blackboard. I wear +0.50 glasses while reading and using my phone. I am now 30 and my prescription is the same. My mates who started wearing -0.50 glasses around the same age and worn them all the time are now blind without them with -3 or -3.75
@@EvilNeuroidk if I’m even relevant in this conversation since idk if I have Myopia but I do remember when I was young something about my eyes being something like they described in the video. I have short sightedness not sure if it genetics or the incident, to cut a long story short I was playing with a dinosaur with a horn not sharp pretty dull and well something heavy fell on me and well it went into the side of my eye. It didn’t penetrate anything it just into the side of my eye I am honestly not sure which eye ? It was pretty traumatic tbh. Couple weeks after I noticed that my vision was way blurrier and told my mom and I got glasses at the age of 3-4 along with eye thing discovered a month later as well. I’m currently 14 and my vision without my glasses is ok still blurry tho I can’t read anything farther then 3 feet in front of me, my progression in sight is very slight I don’t have direct numbers might ask my parents but it been stable (at least from my perspective) I think it might be genetic and some slight physical damage that contributed to my eye sight.
I didnt need glasses until I was 23… very mild myopia and astigmatism (which wasnt there 2 years prior).. at 26 needed new glasses, slight increased strength. 27 major increase, new glasses and checked by doctor. Now 28, just got new glasses again, and now I’m -1,75 myopia and -3/-4,25 astigmatism (right/left eye)… would be fun to know why my eyes changed out of nowhere, and why they changed so much, in such short time? Mainly the astigmatism, because my myopia isn’t that bad…
I am sure my optician lied to me when I was 13 & had a - 2 prescription. He said my eyes would stabilise when I was older. Well now I am 53 & at - 17 & still waiting.
@@AntonioTheOptom Hey Antonio thank you for your response One question! My glass prescription is -3.50 for both my eyes What should be the prescription for my Contact Lenses?
luckly i don't think my myopia has ever progressed in the ~22 years i've had it (since i became a teenager more or less). hyperopia however seems to be setting in... i can't see as near WITH the myopia glasses anymore. minimum focus distance is noticeably longer now, like twice as long as it used to be. still normal without the glasses, but used to be normal with them too.
Your eyes will stop getting worse when you stop using your glasses indoors, when reading, when doing computer work, or when looking at a phone screen. Your glasses are prescribed to help you see at distance. Looking at things close up while wearing glasses worsens your myopia. The eye adjusts to the conditions presented to it. Read any literature on the Bates method.
At the beginning and end of my high school I had - 1.5 prescription. Then joined University, my prescription rose to 2.5 in second year then to 3.5 third year remained at 3.5 in fourth year but jumped to 4.75 after my 4th year project. Got a job immediately at 24 after two years arround 2014 in employment it reduced to 4.5 then arround 2020 during covid 19 Lockdown we were given a 1 year off and went to do farm work instead of staying in the house all day. My prescription reduced again to 3.5 left eye, and right eye reduced to 3.0. It has stabilized since then and nowadays i feel that i can do most activities without need of glasses.
Can you make a video about ortoqueratology? I'm using it rn, so I've been reading and hearing a lot about it before, but would like more information from you, as you seem very knowledgeable and trust worthy.
I used to have 20/10 eyesight. At 34 since about 3 years I started seeing worse at distance. The weird part is that object in the distance sometimes look clearish then get blurry. Sometimes I can easily see subtitles from 10 feet awat and sometimes they are blurry at 5 feet. I felt that smartphones and remote work have caused this. I love reading so I don't know what to do. I wonder if looking at distant objects for a while can somehow reverse what happened
There was a girl who was strapped in a chair in a small room for most of her childhood, and when she was finally taken from that family she was unable to clearly see further than the distance she was used to seeing in the small room. I think that outside activities which force us to look into the distance and at several different distances in rapid succession may be what helps us maintain good vision. Like you said the eye grows and that’s normal but the refractive parts of the eyes are supposed to grow at the same rate as the eye. What if being outdoors doesn’t prevent the eye from growing long but helps regulate the growth of the parts of the eyes that adjust to focus on things
dude that's the same thing i think of, like sunlight stimulate dopamine to regulate eye growth for clearer and sharper vision, doesn't that mean that it can reverse myopia even by slight changes?
There is a very easy solution to stopping myopia progression. In situations where you don't need your glasses to see clearly, simply don't use them. Activities like using your phone, a computer, or reading a book simply don't need the same strength of glasses as driving a car. If you make this your habit, you will likely never need glasses for any of these activities. If you already need glasses for these activities, then your solution is to get another pair of glasses that are about +1.0 diopters from your primary glasses (meaning if you are normally -3.0, if you add +1.0, you get -2.0). By using the correct glasses for short distance activities, your eye focus muscles will remain relaxed, which will completely eliminate one major source of eye strain and stop your myopia progression. This also eliminates the need for goofy things like taking breaks to stare off into the distance.
I am 62. I just got my new glasses from a National Lens company. My glasses are -8.5. However, my vision in my left eye is -8.5. Without my glasses I can read all the micro printing and fine lines on a $100 dollar bill. As long as that bill is within 5 inches. Makes it great for catching counterfeits.
I have myopia... and its really bad.. I got it due to heredity.. and I literally can't even see a person standing a meter away for me.. and I am only 16.. am I gonna go blind???
Is it normal that my near-sightedness has decreased progressively over the last 3 months and before that my eyes were farsighted? but now whether you look close or far, it's getting blurry.
my vision was fine until this year when my right eye which was better than the other eye felt super dry / weird.. it went from -6.5 with -2.25 cycl to -7 sph with -4.25cycl while my other eye was the same 😭. Hopping my eye just chills out and stops changing lol
I'd like someone to work out a study based on the kinds of outdoor activities as much as whether or not outdoors time is spent in regards to eye-sight. I know for a fact, I'm not the only person who would self report myopic issues diminishing within a year of owning a motorcycle, for instance... Those of us who take riding seriously, emphasize things like "Road Strategy" as much as the particular skills with the controls and wearing decent ARMOR at all times, SO we religiously scan as far ahead as we possibly can to "read traffic" which is simply wasted effort if you can't see well enough to tell an 18-wheeler from a volkswagen bug at the distance in question (greater than a mile)... AND quantifiably, I'd struggle to read the text on my TV set across the room for "Jeopardy" (so you have something to see for yourself) just 15 feet away... Now, I can easily enough read the fine-prints on those disclaimers for medicine commercials across the bottom of the screen... where text is frequently less than a quarter inch tall... It comes down to it, whether drivers get taught or not, there's a LOT for your eyes to have to do if you wish to survive long riding a motorcycle. From the mirror checks to glances in the periphery for wheels of other vehicles liniing up (or not) with the markings on the road, lights and signals, and whether traffic ahead of the car you're following is getting snarled... You want every advantage you can possibly get to respond to trouble ahead rather than limiting yourself to simply reacting to the vehicle right in front of you... Just for a year or two riding a motorcycle though??? Something's going on. I still have astigmatism, admittedly, and it fluctuates with sinus pressures... BUT perhaps there is something to "exercising your eyes" if we just studied the idea. I'll also admit that I've had a license to ride since I was 15 (legal age in my State) 30 years ago... I had noticed a somewhat alarming progression since taking a hiatus to see to my mother's end of life care... BUT it's nearly "fixed" itself since getting back on the bike as a normal habit. AND no, I'm not suggesting it's a cure or anything worthy of tossing your prescription lenses. As discussed in the video, we can't entirely "cure" myopia... We CAN however (apparently) pretty seriously arrest the progression. I'll probably never have perfect 20/20... BUT I've kept a legal license in spite of the 20/40 limit before being commanded to get glasses in order to drive legally in my State. Anyways... just a thought, and since I haven't seen too many comments about it, someone should share it. I've spoken to other riders who (at least anecdotally) share similar experiences since getting a bike and license to ride... Maybe not everyone will benefit, but there just seems to be something to it... or not nearly so many should mention it. ;o)
Hi doctor !! I am 19+ years old with myopia of -3.00 I consider of getting lasik in 2022 when I turn 20 . Is it a good age ? I hate glasses because lenses are a bit thick and contacts are irritating my eyes after a few hours ...
I heard at age 25 or after is better, that's when our eyes stop growing. So that if we do get surgery, it won't get messed up later. But yeah, I would ask a professional.
I understand what he is saying... Its not that hard. He's telling us to do our research for ourselves and look into it all and stop wearing glasses or else your myopia will keep worsening.
Just so that we are clear. Glasses don’t make your eyes worse - I’m not sure where this conspiracy theory originated. If anyone has papers to prove that it does, I would love to read them. I’m out here trying to educate the public because there are a lack of resources available for the average joe that wants to do the best for their eyes. i’m 18 and i’ve been wearing glasses since i was almost 3, not sure about the the exact prescription but i’m pretty sure both of my eyes are almost -13.00 😞
Hi Antionio. Do you need as myopic patient full prescription for near work such as working at PC? I Understand for driving you need to see 20/20 so of course you need full prescription. But could be a reason for myopia progression because you use full prescription at near work?
You should be able to use a non-full prescription for the computer provided that the vision has been stable and is known to not change anymore. Otherwise I would still use the full prescription even for near.
@@AntonioTheOptom and my question is what does full myopia correction mean? You must see 20/20 or 20/16 ? If my eyes are healthy and I am 30 years old male.
What would make my myopia improve as I age? When I was about 8, I had a prescription of -2.0. At 30, my prescription was -1.25. Now at nearly 40, -1 is too strong. I have never gotten an explanation other than "that is odd..." or perhaps "late ocular muscle development", and the hypothesis of presbyopia causing an initial drift towards vision improvement.
@Tb-on4fxlasik is not risky, what are talking about? Laser surgery is super safe. Why is being nearsighted worse than being farsighted? I wear glasses for distance, but take them off for near work. My new post cataract lenses mimic what I had before. I just take the glasses off for reading (under eighteen inches). The progressives bring these intermediate distances into focus. Call it differently abled.
My myopia is still progressing despite the fact I'm 36... I've bought glasses half a year ago with new prescription and already everything is getting blurry at the distance.

I'm 24 and I had retinal detachments in both my eyes. before that my prescriptions were only around -4.25 but now they're -7.5 with some bad astigmatism too. kinda lame
Why do people who have little to no prescription often become far-sighted at around middle age? I’m not talking about presbyopia, but the gradual need for more plus to correct their distance vision? It’s happened to both of my parents and all of my grandparents and seems to be happening to me too. 5 years ago I was plano in both eyes. Now I’m at +1.00ds with +1.5 ADD?
Good question! It is known that the cornea changes curvature as we age, and also many hyperopes can accommodate the distance prescription off automatically until the lens cannot be bent enough to cover the amount of hyperopia. Hope that makes sense 👍
I started wearing glasses when I was 6. By 16 my prescription topped out at -7.25. Now I'm 41 and my prescription is reversing. I was told by my optometrist its likely due to old age onset of longsightedness. My god mother had the same happen with her and in her late 60's didn't need glasses at all but eventually the longsightedness took over too.
Hi I'm 13 years old and I have -5,5 glasses do you have any tips to get my eyes better? Also, will I go blind before the age of 18 bc of myopia?😭 When I play sports, should I do it with or without glasses?
Look into Nathan Oxenfeld on youtube. Eyes do not need to keep getting worse and it's in fact the glasses that make them worse. I've stopped wearing mine, and only wear for night time driving and now I have gone down from 3.25 to 3.00
@@AntonioTheOptom nope, no using through the day. Can see just fine without them. I have found too that since not wearing them while driving, my eyes are getting exercised the whole time as, as a driver, your constantly shifting the vision from long to short distance so I'm actually strengthening my eyes while driving. Was talking to a good friend the other day too and he's like 45 and he was saying that years ago his eye sight started degrading a little and then I think he said he got a job as a driver and just by driving and using his long distance vision a lot, it just sorted itself out on its own so he wasn't surprised when I told him all what I had been finding out. Also as a foot note from something else I have been researching into - when you wear glasses or sun glasses, it is usually blocking out uv light, which is essentially the sun and we need sun on our eyes to keep them strong and functioning well. So another reason why it's best to keep glasses off your face through the day especially.
There shouldn’t be but some practitioners may choose to not start you on low dose atropine due to your age, most start around the early teens. If you are still progressing, best thing to do is to see your optometrist
Read the Bates method. Read "Relearning to See Improve Your Eyesight - Naturally" The optometrist does not offer you hope just more and more glasses, contact lenses and dangerous eye surgery. Remember increasing myopia increases your chances of a detached retina and cataracts later in life.

My optician recommended going outdoors for three reasons:
#1 makes no sense, you're getting just as much oxygen indoors.

I've also noticed in the last few years that I have double vision if I'm not using correctives. So I'm thinking that it's a combonation of all these things that my myopia continues to progress lol

It’s probably genetics

One of the best covers of the song I've heard. Well done 👍.
Spot on 👍
u can fix myopia
My sight was getting worse and worse each year until the age of 18 when it stopped at -7 the day I bought my first contact lenses (glasses were already too heavy). Now I'm almost 38 and still wearing the same prescription. My doc says it happens with contact lenses.
Edit:
I recently visited an ophthalmologist, she wrote out a prescription for new, weaker (!!!) glasses, but my astigmatism has slightly increased. And at the end of the visit, she referred me to the hospital because of a retinal detachment, which surprised me the most, because I haven't spotted anything odd.
Give some updates
This is true for hard or gas perm contacts but not soft.

Did you wear the glasses? I never wore them, used a lot of computer and 15 years later still -1
Well I've been wearing glasses for around one decade now, and I'm really glad that I have a tendency to go outside even just strolling around my city, riding my motorcycles here and there, or simply walk in botanical park and sit there basking in early morning sunlight while reading some books and accompanied by tea.
"Knowing this wouldn’t it then not be logical to put a strong plus lens on children for all close work, to totally eliminate focusing effort?"
You are exactly right about this.
Hey! Do not worry, I have myopia since 8 and now Im 22 and I dont visit an ophthalmologist for about 2 and a half years
When I hit puberty my vision started to go worst, felt like I needed a new pair of glasses every 6 months, but as soon as pimples stopped appearing my myopia slowed down
Im 100% sure that you'll get better, and dont listen to those saying that using the phone is bad, I used ALOT of computers back in my puberty and my myopia still slowed down when I became an adult.
@@Rodo079 the degree of myopia when u r 8 years old please ???

@crimsonrain9570 .it's much more common to acquire then have some sort of inherent myopia
Same bro my left eye is lazy af im trying to improve it i think it work abit

Check endmyopia
luckly i don't think my myopia has ever progressed in the ~22 years i've had it (since i became a teenager more or less). hyperopia however seems to be setting in... i can't see as near WITH the myopia glasses anymore. minimum focus distance is noticeably longer now, like twice as long as it used to be. still normal without the glasses, but used to be normal with them too.
Without my glasses I can't even look at my laptop as it's all blurry.
@Anton43218 Then get glasses 3 diopters less than you have now. So that there is less of a strain on your eyes.
Once you start wearing that first minus lens, your refraction always goes down. Then you can not get out of it.
Why is that true, as science?
man i'm so glad i can do basic tasks without glasses just fine and my myopia progresses only a little bit every 5 years
Can you make a video about ortoqueratology? I'm using it rn, so I've been reading and hearing a lot about it before, but would like more information from you, as you seem very knowledgeable and trust worthy.

Where can i find the video for myopia control? Is it out yet? I can't find it :( would love to see it!!!!!

The normal eye , at birth, has a refractive STATE OF +4 Diopters.
We are not born with Emmetropia.
Don’t worry just try to remember the things I talked about in this video
Check out Nathan Oxenfeld, its a good place to start if you want to help your vision get better
Me too, I have the same thoughts.
I'm 24 and it's still worsening, my optometrist repeats that it should slow down soon but it's not.
Maybe not everyone will benefit, but there just seems to be something to it... or not nearly so many should mention it. ;o)

I heard at age 25 or after is better, that's when our eyes stop growing. So that if we do get surgery, it won't get messed up later. But yeah, I would ask a professional.
Never, once you start wearing a minus lens.
But it is possible to recover from 20/50, -1D, if you study science, and do it yourself.

Why is being nearsighted worse than being farsighted? I wear glasses for distance, but take them off for near work. My new post cataract lenses mimic what I had before. I just take the glasses off for reading (under eighteen inches). The progressives bring these intermediate distances into focus. Call it differently abled.

Also as a foot note from something else I have been researching into - when you wear glasses or sun glasses, it is usually blocking out uv light, which is essentially the sun and we need sun on our eyes to keep them strong and functioning well. So another reason why it's best to keep glasses off your face through the day especially.
