During the 1960s, the Supermarionation team at AP Films and Century 21 made huge advancements in television puppetry and practical special effects thanks to their work on a score of cult favourites like Thunderbirds, Captain Scalet, Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Joe 90 and more.

Century 21 Films Ltd is a multi-faceted production company whose work spans drama to documentary, miniature effects to puppet shows. It was founded by a group of filmmakers who first collaborated on Filmed in Supermarionation, the story of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's hit puppet shows including Thunderbirds, Stingray and Captain Scarlet.
Since then, we have worked for a multitude of high-profile clients including ITV, BBC, Mammoth Productions, British Film Institute and the Halifax working on projects such Thunderbirds, Endeavour, Doctor Who and The Twilight Zone.
In addition to our regular filmmaking services, we specialise in ‘Supermarionation’ - the puppetry filming technique used to make shows like Thunderbirds and have collaborated with ITV repeatedly to provide specialised services. As a kid watching these back in the day I found absolutely amazing. Now as an old man I now realize that this was complete artistry. Good memories to be sure.
It's amazing, listening to the memories of people who created something that I loved as a kid, and that I still love! ... I don't doubt working with puppets was difficult, but they made it look easy, due to their amazing skill and creativity!

Thanks for sharing this video I used to watch thunderbirds are go I really liked the puppets & there strings I remember muffin the mule.
AP films: pioneering Fly-by-Wire...
Even Trey Parker and Matt Stone of "Southpark" said working with puppets in "Team America" was the most difficult movie to make.
They also thought Gerry Anderson was insane for how he managed to put up with it for far longer.

@@Md2802 if you watch Scott Tracy’s lips carefully, you can see he actually said that in one episode, but they overdubbed it.
Absolutely loving these documentaries. I am making a movie studio for filming miniatures myself, so this is fascinating.
Marionettes would require a lot of anticipation due to the delay in the strings from the talented puppeteers. The Terrahawks puppets definitely were an advantage for ease of movements, but excluding leg movements, which was an advantage of the Marionettes. Good video, thanks!
some great Directors (Des Saunders, David Elliott) and 1983 material, very demanding on the crew.
I became a submarine sailor because of Thunderbird 4. Unfortunately fast attack subs don’t have windows, so I was a bit disappointed by that.
