    Following on from Adobe MAX in November, we went to Chicago for a few days to explore the city and capture some images, before heading to New York for a week.
    I've honestly never had a better first impression of an American city. I loved the vibe and enjoyed the architecture within the famous skyline of Chicago. That very skyline, of course, is home to two buildings I've wanted to see from a very young age; the Sears/Willis Tower and the John Hancock center/875 North Michigan Avenue. We didn't quite have enough time to explore all the different views available. But I'm happy with what we managed to fit in, given the extensive amount of time we spent walking in the near -10ºC cold!
    We only had a couple of days to explore Chicago, but I would definitely be eager to return if I got the chance again! Stay tuned for the NYC vlog series coming up next...

    So cool you are in Chicago. You took some lovely shots of our city. 1. There are Bean cleaners. 2. There are 38 moveable bridges over the Chicago River. I high recommend Patrick McBriarty's book, Chicago River Bridges. 3. You were on the Kinzie Street bridge over the North Branch at one point. That happened to be the spot of an historic event in City history. In 1992, piles being driven into the riverbed breached an abandoned tunnel system flooding the tunnels and the basements of many downtown buildings causing a mass evacuation of the Loop area for fear of electrical fires. None occurred by everybody went home early that day. Many buildings remained closed for days while the flood was controlled. 4. Chicago's City Hall/County Building opened in 1911. 5. No one in Chicago calls the Sears Tower, the Willis Tower. It is the Sears Tower and will always be the Sears Tower. Don't know Willis. Don't care to. There are great places to photograph outside downtown. Come back often.

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  4 роки тому +5

      Cheers for all the added info! I googled a few of them whilst editing this vlog. I was most intrigued by the bridge processes and set times during the year for opening. If anything, I thought they’d just open as and when required by boat.
      I did wonder about the Sears tower, as I’m quite prone to following accuracies, but didn’t know what emotional response the name change would have. Definitely want to return to Chicago and scratch further than the surface!

    Another fun thing photo-wise is photos down alleyways that point toward the downtown. Some alleys go for miles. Another is from the elevated train platforms looking west from the Loop at night. You just missed the storms with the big waves of slush, but.. 50 blocks south of the Loop on the bike path, you can get great sunrise and photos of the city.

    • @ericpmoss
      @ericpmoss 4 роки тому +1

      Oh, and views of the city from the bridges over the river up on say, Belmont or Diversey. Crap at noon, pretty cool at night, and with a wide angle and tripod, you can get some of the light streaks of planes coming into O'Hare every minute.

      Google Maps is always the first point of call for finding locations, tracing lines on where good viewpoints could potentially be, then confirmed with street view. Second to that would be recommendations from other creators in the region and then researching via other vlogs and Instagram. I think we only really scratched the surface on this trip though!

    Ah, Chicago. Neat! Glad to see you are enjoying it even with this cold weather. It was ~40s in Illinois not too long ago. The street brightness might partly be from the salt. ;D I don't get out there much. Edit: I don't think anyone from around here wants to call that building anything but the Sears Tower, lol.

    Always love your travel photography videos, makes me want to go out and shoot at new places. I was just wondering if travel photography is your main genre of photography and if you earn from it. I'm just curious as to how one can earn income from travel photography, I know from your previous vid that the Japan tourism department asked you to take photos but I'm guessing that's not always the case. Hope it's not rude to ask, I'm just an aspiring photographer myself and the work I find widely available in my location is events and weddings photography. Thanks in advance and great video!
