@Simon Achebe I agree, the extreme unclean vocals were definitely becoming more of a mainstream technique around this time period. Still, it blows my mind that this even predates Bathory by 2 years. & Celtic Frost was still early Hellhammer when Holy Moses recorded this demo. People also forget to include Sodom & Kreator in the evolution of that early black metal sound. These early german extreme metal bands definitely attributed to that harsher, heavier, darker sound we know today as black metal along with the hardcore punk bands of the '70s & '80s of course. For the time period, and the fact that it's a female vocalist, these are pretty damn gnarly & impressive to me compared to other extreme metal bands of the day
For those, who likes this early black metal sound with witchy vocals, there's USA punk metal band Plasmatics with female vocalist Wendy O. Williams, she used all that satanic stuff like pentagrams on the stage, and for example tracks Black Leather Monster and The Damned where you can find dark apocalyptic lyrics, screaming, shreiking and blast beat part and even "ughs" before CF
If you look up death growl in Wikipedia it says that Sabina Classen uses growling vocals in this demo. Some punk groups like The Clash and Plasmatics use growled or gruff sounding vocals.
this was before venom and even sounds more true to the sound of black metal than venom, and its a chick. fake news is strong even in the BM community, glad i randomly found this band
Venom may have coined the term or whatever, but more than them this and Heavy Load might be the earliest things pointing towards true black metal, alongside Dorsâl and Attomica from Latin America ofc.
Dude! How the hell are Heavy Load, Dorsal, and Attomica even remotely close to black metal? HL is a classic HM band, Dorsal is a Crossover band, Attomica is pure thrash. The earliest band that pointed to black metal was Vulcano and early Sepultura. No South American band predates them.
@@ashkenad Oops! We can't forget those guys. The first Colombian extreme metal band and a huge influence on South American metal. Too bad they split-up. I'm not sure how that dude thought that those bands are BM? Its like saying that Priest and Accept were an influence to Grindcore.

According to Wikipedia this is the first band ever... I was curious about the origin of harsh vocals in metal. This is supposedly the first recorded instance of the death growl in metal.
@Simon Achebe death ss had one or two rehearsal tracks recorded prior to 1981 and they were just horror rock/metal, nothing to do with black/speed/thrash. On their compilations the years next to track titles actually correspond to the time the songs were composed, not recorded. For example the version of horrible eyes you refer to was not recorded in 1978 but composed that year.
@Simon Achebe Thanks! very interesting stuff, United Mutation never heard them before! by the way even Venom back on their 1979 rehearsal (which was released for first time before a couple years) their first singer was already using harsh vocals on the songs buried alive/raise the dead. Also does the Spk - Slogun song from 1979 count? The vocals at the end of the track become harsh enough I think...
@Simon AchebeFrom early industrial i would recommend these: the legendary slogun track by Spk from 1979: ua-cam.com/video/OZWmYEUoweg/v-deo.html and We hate you little girls by thobbing gristle released in 1979 but recorded in 1976: ua-cam.com/video/AWqNEItowi0/v-deo.html
@Commander Salamander Black metal masters do not exist, as far as we know the term "Black Metal" was created by the guys from Venom, but there is no proof that the guys from Holy Moses have created a demo with that name, there is no song or image of that demo that proves that in 1980 they created the term before Venom.
pretty sure this demo is mere myth. it doesn’t exist anywhere on the internet and it is not acknowledged by the band themselves, who surely would capitalize off of creating the term black metal if they could. i could be wrong but until it is posted somewhere, it remains a mystery
Venoms first album was in 81. But Holy Moses first demo was in 1980 so Holy Moses very well could have been Venom to the punch but Venom gets all the credit
@@hmpz36911 they certainly seem to be the first band to widely distribute an album or EP of the style known as BLACK metal or proto-black metal. This demo wasn’t widely distributed, but it’s damn interesting how some aspects - such as the vocals - are even more ahead of their time than Venom. I love Venom and I think they’re far better than Holy Moses here (although this is good).
