  • You can easily disable power to USB ports in your computer through the Windows Device Manager utility. Turning the power off on these ports can be beneficial for security purposes, for saving power or battery consumption when you are not using these ports, or even when you shut the system down and the ports remain powered.

    I turned off the HP Sleep & charge option as in the video and yet the ports still work after I close the laptop lid and it goes to sleep!

      As seen in the video this option is mostly for S4 (Hibernation) and S5 (Soft-Off) sleep states.
      The sleep state mostly referred to as "Standby" is S3 (or sometimes lower).
      If you need to turn off USB, when you close the lid, then you can only change the behaviour in your power settings from Standby to Hibernate. But then it most likely will need more than 10s to "wake up".
      Your complete RAM is stored to hard drive on hibernate and has to be read back into RAM on waking up. The slower your hard drive and/or the larger your RAM (and therefor data to be written/read) the longer it will take to hibernate/wake-up.
      For some it helps if they additionally disable "USB selective suspend setting" in their Power Options > Advanced settings, as well as allowing the computer to turn off USB devices in Device Manager > USB devices > Settings of each device > Power Management.

    Great video,,,I've got a problem with two of my USB ports,,when you plug in any USB cable the laptop literary turns off,,this happens even if you do it gently,,, what could be the problem

    • @carstennsfw
      @carstennsfw Рік тому

      Does that happen, when it's only the cable and nothing connected on the other end, too? Than there might be a short somewhere.
      Does that happen only with one or some cables? Then the cables are most likely faulty.
      Does that happen with every cable you plugin in? Then the port itself seems to be faulty.
      Or does it only happen, when something is connected on the other end?
      Does it happen only with some cables on any device? Then it still could be the cable.
      Does it habe with any cables on some devices? Then it could be, that the device demands too much power on initial start than your usb port can provide. It's still a bad port or board, but not broken. Try using an active usb hub (hub has it's own power from the wall), connect that to your "faulty" ports.
      If it works then, it's definatly a power draw issue. If it still turns off your computer (and you're sure the hub itself is fine), then I'm afraid your usb ports are faulty.
      If you have warranty left, try filing for RMA.

    You didn't explain how to power off USB ports in sleep mode, only in hibernate and shutdown.

    Sadly, my Alienware BIOS only have option to disable powershare, but that is only for when it is on battery, if the laptop is connected to the power cord, it will keep the charging ports on anyway.
