"Good luck, mate."
One of the most iconic commentary lines of all time.
Love this as I can see my late Dad on this.
“Good luck mate” when Cliff is in the final black is as iconic a piece of commentary as any in sport.
The hug in the end was so wholesome!
I can say I was there at the time watching this first 147 of the World Championship in 1983.👍
41 years after this historic event, I still regularly watch this and enjoy it in a country that does not have professional snooker, Bosnia!!
Still one of the greatest maximums ever. It doesn't matter how many time I watch that break, I still punch the air when that final black drops
I wouldn't say one of the greatest mainly because cliffs first shot he actually missed and was lucky he got a red potted by accident from the result. Kind of makes the whole break based on a fluke really compared to other 147s thag have been made
@@Michael-cz6ob It doesn't matter that his break started with a fluke. I was sixteen when I watched that match. It was the first 147 I'd ever seen, ever. It left a lasting memory 🙂🙂
As a street kid in Toronto we would go watch him play at the 24 pool hall on young street we'd run errands and such he'd always gave us big tips and buy us food and pay for a table for us to keep us out of trouble
Class
Wow, so cool. Gentleman.
I remember watching his as a kid, and now watching it on Utube knowing the result I say to myself “ I hope he doesn’t miss” 😂😂😂😂👍
Magic, watched it live on tv back then , couldn't resist watching it all again, great stuff
The last two blacks and the yellow where great shots under pressure. I love that Bill W was watching from the other side and gave him a big bear hug at the end. Legend of the game and legendary moment, all from a fluked first red. Briliant
Bill was probably as happy as Cliff. Good lad and legendary 🍺
That yellow remains one of the finest shots ever played.
Bingo 🎯 Nick
Love the commentary from Rex Williams and Jack Karnehm.... Brings me back all these years.
The reaction from his fellows was marvellous at the end!
Amazing. Didn't stab the que on any shot, not even the last black. Pure class. Handled the pressure.
Cliff was a heck of a billiards player.
Good eye Keith. He was a big occasion player.
I watched this at double-speed. It was like watching Jimmy White or Ronnie O'Sullivan.
One of greatest moments in sport
3 words - 'Good luck mate!'
Cliff Thorburn a TRUE hardman who NO concessions to ANYONE, ANYWHERE....
That adrenaline rush cliff gets after the black ball pot. His whole body shivers with the high.
Always wanted to see this, thanks. Great job Cliff. A noted Canadian from Toronto I believe.
Wow .. i was smiling like an idiot the last 1 minute if the video. What a video and what amazing reactions.
Great break. Good to see that play on the other table was stopped so that Bill Werbeniuk and John Inman could watch the break.
I wonder how many will get that reference! Funny 🙂
So the first world championship 147 started from a fluke. 🤩
And also it was the first 151 too 😉
It wasn’t a break of 151, he had 4 points from a foul before the break started
@@johnnyrats7083 Ofcourse he got that from a foul. How often do you get that with a 147??
@@beeeraz do know what free ball is?
@@aleXx1852 something you dont have to pay for
Makes sense
Those.where the days .having a pint and a smoke..while your opponent at the table !!.😃
Good luck mate - what a great saying
Big Bill Wurbeniuck stopped playing to watch his mate make history.
First person to score 147 in a match actually got 151.
Remember seeing that when it happened always loved snooker
I remember watching this live I was 23 soon to be 24. Seems like a life time ago because it was I suppose lol. Oh how I and the world has changed.
That's what it looks like when something means a lot to everyone present..:)
Great commentary.... brilliant by Thorburn
Fantastic good old days i remember i was watching it live on tv
Me too. Takes me back...
It actually wasn't shown live. Was shown "as live" later in the day
@@chrisboggon9467 I don't recall that particular detail. I remember the actual live coverage being interrupted a year or two earlier (?) to broadcast events at the Libyan embassy siege
@@chrisboggon9467 cant remember Chris, but it seems that u have an excellent memory, my compliments
knew of this break because it's often been mentioned in commentary over the years, but this is my first time seeing it and I ever would have guessed it started with a fluke!
Good luck mate !. Love that.!
The best way to watch this is…. On fast forward!
Cliff Thorburn is not primarily a presenter. He is an ex snooker player
Is it me or is there more floor space in the crucible back then? Dosnt seem as cramped. Going next year for the first time very excited
“ You didn’t nominate a colour Cliff “. “ Well you can’t borrow my extension then “. 🤣
Which was fair comment, Alex took the piss on that occasion.
Talk about a childish comment by Thorburn
@@McElhinney65 yes he sure did , Should have given Cliff the benefit of any doubt
One of the best with kirks and Steve 😉💜
Always liked Thorburn.
Not a great fan of Cliff, but the long-range stun run through on the final yellow was very good indeed. Probably the best stun run through ever.
There are people that are saying 'I was there but I didnt see any of it because that damn dividing screen was in the way'
Fabulous break. It's a shame that the 4:3 frame has been stretched to 16:9, making it difficult to watch.
All the times I've seen them replay this on the TV during World championship tournaments I have never seen until now Cliff actually miss the first shot and accidently pot the red with a fluke plant
I've watched this frame many times but only just noticed the black roll off its spot into a hole in the cloth whenever its re-spotted. See at 40 in the break. Did they borrow a pub table?
The Best of his Times
40 year OMG 😃
I feel the tension watching it, and I know he does a maximum!
😂
Terry G took a puff at his cigarette when Cliff T went for his first black, surely that was in his line of sight? 🇨🇦
I wonder if he was more happy with the first 147 or the huge payout for achieving it?
wasn't a big payout then but large enough i suppose buy a house with it , theyve lessoned it today
The reds were pretty perfect. I think I could have scored 50 from that position
Rumour has it, Cliff and Terry are STILL playing that match. There are now skeletons amongst the crowd.
14:42 Is that Neil Robertson
It was David Taylor. I doubt Robertson was born when this happened.
Mr Humphries from Are You Being Served
This is the highest break with most number of out of position shots. Excellent one though!🙂
???
Terry Griffiths and Cliff Thorburn? They must have finished this match in about 1996. Seriously though, thanks for the upload.
Not far off! They actually finished this match at 3:51am... it was the latest-ever finish for a match at the Crucible.
When you look at how it was almost finished before it started with the first red.
Was that bill at the end?
Yeah. I wouldn't have wanted to pay his bar Bill after the ensuing celebration.
All these years later and ronnie can do 3 147s in the time it took cliff to do this 1.
True, but the 147 Peter Ebdon started back in 1983 is still on the reds.
Unreal speed by Osullivan
The ironic line about the £3,000 high break prize being "worth a night out" didn't age well. With the rampant inflation, in 2022 you'd need to spend all that £3k for just one bloody night out!
Studly achievement.
Looks like they had much more room back then to put up two tables. What changed?
The Grinder 👌
Buzzing Ronnie is back at number one where he belongs
This match is still going 38 years later.!.. should be a winner soon ..lol.!
Highest break possible is 154,,,, if a player makes a foul and leaves his opponent a free ball and pots a colour ( the free ball) then the black, then he goes on to pot all fifteen reds with blacks and all the colours,,,,154. 🙂👍🏻
Forgive me, but I make 147+8=155
It's 155
👍
and the frame.
Big bill wuirbenuick no longer around. Remember he split his trousers.😅
Did Terry pot the white from the break.
When everyone used to wear beige
Why did he used the spider instead of the normal rest at 8:00?
It wasn't the spider, it was the long rest, known as the half butt. The head of those long rests were that shape with 3 grooves back in those days.
@@christiano8088 Ahh didn't know that, thanks!
Run the table
you can fit 3 of ronnies 147`s in the time he takes to do one
The only ever match when you had enough time to put the kettle on between each shot...instead of each frame. ☕
He didn't make that easy! rest 3 times, some long run through shots, all off a fluke.
Interesting this first ever started with such an unbelievable fluke.
Started with a fluke as well!
I've been playing snooker for a few years and I can tell you that scoring 147 isn't so hard and quite common place nowadays.
All started with a fluke tho 😬
The cue action is horrible lol
Good enough to get a 147 and also win the world championship. Why don't you upload your cue action? 🤔
Dreadful man.
Terrible to watch.
Once I grew a full beard during a 7 ball break of his.
This was excellent for the time, though.
Hardly like winning an Olympic gold medal is it?! This pool game's just a step up from Shove Ha'penny. Ridiculous.
As a boy I watched this, I was collecting my pension once it finished.
