Actually, it's very common for people to lose their accents while singing, whether intended or not. I personally can't tell if I lose mine since my singing is so crappy nobody could say if I had an accent or not anyways. Your explanation makes good sense though.
Maybe its because when someone is singing they normally already know what they want it to sound like or what the pitch for this is so they know what they go for while you speak you just go for what you are used to which means in german for example, very hard and distinct consonants, or the exactly other way with japanese for example.
Otto Kylänlahti it is. The funny thing about singing and music is that it doesn't *quite* use the same part of the brain that regular speech does. This is why people with damage to Broca's area, for example, can sometimes still sing, but they can't speak in regular conversation. People lose their accent while singing, but it doesn't sound "american" either, because that's also an accent. It just sounds like English words in a song.
Otto Kylänlahti there is no "true" English. English itself is a Frankenstein that began as Saxon (that's what Old English is) with lots of Latin sprinkled in, and then Danish (because of the Viking Invasions and Danelaw) and then Medieval French (because of the Norman invasion, which was also essentially a second Viking invasion, although they overthrew the Danish vikings who were in power) and then the renaissance and modern age where we've borrowed a little bit from everything. But spoken accents do disappear when you sing, because they get replaced by the melody and tempo of the song itself instead. :)
Malukah is love. And her accents are love too. And other stuffs as well. I love how you're always "of the people". It's like having a talented sister or cousin or neighbour, someone I grew up with.
Very insightful. I would love to hear you sing in fantasy languages, or even Latin. :) Enya does this a lot. She sings in quite a few different languages: Spanish, Latin, Gaelic, English, and probably a few others I am forgetting. It's a very unique and special talent you have acquired / are acquiring. Never stop being awesome, Malu! :D
ArchaeanDragon Yes! I love musicians like Enya who sing in other languages. The more mystical sounding, the better! hehehe! Thanks for watching this vid!! :D
I sang in Spanish, Valencian, Japanese, English, French and Dovahzul and in each the strength and softness of consonants are different and the place where the pronunciation is born and how it ends as well. When we sing we normally pronounce properly because that's something we don't do as usually as to speak. When you speak other languages you will keep some of your accent because of how you use to speak and it's obviously more frequent than singing, when you also try to modulate the voice to reach a note or a tone of softness or hardness so it's no hard deal to also sing without accent since you are modulating your voice already.
It's so cool to hear you speak Spanish. I've studied a couple of languages and it is always interesting to hear people switch back to their native tongue.
To me your singing voice sounds like it has a bit of a Celtic accent. Your voice is is one of the purest, most beautiful I've ever heard, though, and I love listening to anything you sing. Voice of an angel. God bless you for the wonderful music you've given us, and I hope there's much, much more to come and that 2019 is an amazing year for you.
So much positive power in all your videos , you just make my day a whole lot brighter! ! Keep doing what you do, your videos are more than just videos! Thanks for your content!
Johnny Black Johnny, thank you. You made my day a whole lot brighter, too! And makes me feel really happy about starting this second channel. Hope you have a great weekend!
I thought you were Italian at first glance! But I then I heard you talk and then I knew right away you were Mexican! And one more thing I thought I overheard my grandma listening to your music! For an old lady she's an ITunes freak!!! I found out she bought Frozen Sleep and Auld Lang Syne! Best grandma ever!
I've been listening to your singing and some speech for quite some time and never noticed an accent. Then again with such a powerful, lovely voice, it's difficult to notice such distractions. Just keep on doing what you love doing and sharing!
MALUKAH UPLOADED A LINGUISTICS VIDEO! HEAVEN HAS BEEN REACHED! I'd love to hear you sing in Welsh or another Celtic language. Jus' putting it out there.
Malukah, thanks for that excellent analysis of singing and talking. I'd often wondered about it myself, but being an instrumentalist I'd never really thought it through. And I see Thor is hard at work in the background :)
Very interesting, never really thought about the nature of the consonants and how they resonate in human speech. I have noticed that many singers have no trouble hiding whatever accent they have when singing in another language, this was a nice explanation.
I didn't know that about the English language and I'm English haha. Thanks for answering that question and bringing something new to it too. It's interesting how your accent switches by making that change. I can feel that those muscles are working more with my accent now, amazing.
I liked the way you made that make more sense to people like me who speak no other languages. I hadn't really thought about it like that before either so AWESOME video, great explanation! Also, I hope you have a good weekend too and have fun in Skyrim, I know I will! (I know I should work on learning a second language but I'm 34 almost!
Fascinating. I love both your singing and verbal voice. I picked up on it too. I remember hearing your regular voice for the first time and it surprised me.
It's so interesting hearing you switch languages! It reminds me of my upbringing with my grandfather. He would swap between English and Spanish regularly and quite fluidly! He still does from time to time without realizing it. :)
yeah, absolutely correct conclusion! you're very sensitive in auditive things. your voice is so tender. i love listening to a sensitive-feeling and because of that sensitive-singing person. best regards from germany!
From my experience, which really isn't much; only 8 years of Spanish classes through Jr. High and High School, Spanish is a language that focuses more on the vowels than consonants. Referencing Malukah's Skyrim playthrough videos, she does emphasize the Kah, when she funnily chides herself. That is because of the sounds Spanish makes. The u is emphasized more, thus making the K more harsh and sharp sounding, creating that sound. I've heard plenty of people, Spanish, British, Italian, and even Asian, where their accents disappear when they sing. I'm not sure I can explain why this happens, but it is so common, it doesn't surprise me anymore. I love how you explain it Malukah, it's very interesting, I must say. I never put much thought on where, in one's throat, you resonate a vowel or consonant. It definitely makes me think about understanding pronunciation of other languages a bit more.
This is so true! When I was studying languages in college my professor dedicated an entire lesson to teaching us where to form different sounds in the mouth so that we could pronounce words properly in the language we were studying. As a result of those lessons, today I can usually pick up on an accent if I spend enough time listening to someone speak with it, because I change where I form the sounds in my own mouth after observing the person. Languages are fun! And you do them so well Malukah! The first time I heard you speak it was a surprise, since your singing voice is indeed so different! :D
dovan777 Indeed, but just remember her accent is not spanish, its mexican, an actual spanish person would have a different accent entirely. Actually is quite easy to identify people's country of origin by their accents when speaking spanish, at least in Latin America
I'm a non-native english speaker too and I also never really thought about that, but I can totally comprehend your explanation. The more I think about it, the more I recognize these tone shifts at myself and my multilingual friends...
It's so true! I teach English here in Argentina and whenever I want my accent to sound more nativelike I do the same as you, when you sing...great explanation!
Yes, it makes sense. :) When I speak mostly German and then switch to English, I use the words but the tone is different. When I'm speaking English all day long, I switch over completely with tone and everything, I sound completely different. Funny thing is that I tend to mumble horribly in German but never in English, don't ask me why...
I find this true for most people when they sing. Being Swedish and one of those people who don't mind talking with a Swedish accent I still sound "Plain-English" when I sing, as do most people. Even different accents of Swedish blend to a median-accent when sung.
Your slightly accented singing voice fits perfectly with when you sing Skyrim music, because it sort of sounds like their accent. I live your singing! I listen to you whenever I can!
I just wanted to tell you that because of your videos and your talent you inspired me to re learn piano after 7 years and I hope you continue to do what you do and inspire more people.
Jacob Dougherty This is fantastic, Jacob! I always say that time learning to play an instrument is always time well spent. :D It puts your mind and heart at work! :D Thank you for watching and listening to the music I've shared. My very best wishes to you from Mexico!
My accent changes when I sing, too. When I was in choir in school, we were taught to make our vowels less nasal and round them out. I'm from a part of the US where our vowels are extremely nasal, and that doesn't sound very good when you sing. So if I sing classically, I almost have an English accent, but if I sing more pop songs, I don't! It's so interesting how that works :)
After watching your music videos I thought you were very serious, then I watched your Destiny and Skyrim videos and found out your a funny and silly one! I just found out about this channel so I am now subscribed! :)
I Used To Be An Adventurer Like You Then I Took An Arrow To the Knee I am so glad you found this channel! Thank you for watching these videos and even more for subscribing. It makes me feel happy that you now know I'm silly. hahahaha! :D
Personally I like your deeper voice. With your Spanish accent in the deeper voice it's sensual and genuine. It lets the whole world know exactly who you are. By the by Thor made me laugh with his whatever attitude in the background hahaha.
I am really impressed on how you change your accent and I am also looking forward to your next skyrim video to learn some more like the companions missions cause I haven't started them yet but I am looking forward to.
Hi gal !! Been listening to your english and the mexican words.... I say don´t bother...the result is that all your song ends up in...just amazing...keep that up !!!!
I've been following your music for some time now and, as an English teacher to foreign language students, I find it fascinating that you can change from a Spanish accent to an English one so easily! I come from South Africa and have a friend who sings with an American accent but speaks normally with a South African accent. It's very interesting, anyway, I love your voice! Keep doing more game themes! Love from South Africa!
I've really enjoyed watching these personal type videos. You have natural charisma and are just enjoyable to watch and listen to. I really hope you do more vlogs.
you have such a beautiful singing voice, ive even seen several skyrim and oblivion roleplayer use your covers for intro songs and things like that, keep up the amazing singing, hell.. you can probably become famous singer making albums
To be honest, one of the few things that give your accent away is how you pronouce the 's', you still do it like in Spanish, even when you are speaking in English. For exemple, 's' between vowels sounds like /z/, in one moment you said "re/s/onate" whereas you should had said "re/z/onate". You also said "ea/s/ier" instead of "ea/z/ier".
You have a great voice i wouldn't worry to much about the change when you sing. Alot of british singers sound american when they sing. That's just the way singing is, you're vocal cords expand and change during singing :D
This isn't exactly true; it depends on where you are from. I have heard native English speakers who pronounce their s words the way you say isn't English. It's not incorrect; it's only not normal. It's arguably more correct.
I always assumed you were Irish. Haha, that means you have the most envied tone in music. Plus, it just adds this feeling to her music, an ethereal, Celtic feel. Your music is amazing, and I hope to hear more from you in the future. Gratias, Me Amica.
your voice is beautiful! i think music is universal, language is used more in talking (conversation, gathering data and opinions) through dialogue. Whereas singing and music some part of the brain (or just mine) resonates with songs regardless of the language. I have loved many songs where i couldn't even speak or understand the words but the artist used the words so beautifully that i still felt connected to the feeling and the heart of the songs. Have fun and please keep making game music covers "reignite" and "frozen sleep" are really awesome and you are so very talented. Thank you for making videos!!!
The only thing I know how to say in Spanish is "me gusto burrito mucho!" :D That's a very important notion you made me realize, about "where" the language is spoken. I work a lot my English by practicing with different people from many nationalities and I've noticed all american, canadian or english people have some troubles to understand me even when I speak slowly and try to pronounce correctly the words, and that's because of my french accent, that is very rude and harder on english flow, which is sweeter. Now I just tried to pronounce a little higher and to move the resonance place like you do and that's funny, because you're damn right :D it really works ! Thank you Malukah !
As an English speaker, I love hearing different English accents, it gives people a lot more personality to them. You hear them when you hear their accent. :)
Hehehe, I know exactly what you mean. :) As a voice actor, a lot of my free time goes into just changing my voice and seeing what I can do with it. Which sounds kind of obvious since that's the reason behind the job, but it's not something people think about for singing. But I believe I do one strange thing that most probably do not which is how, when I'm either tired or sick or excited, my voice comfort changes so much so that i usually change accents, haha. I speak more Russian when I'm sick because it keeps my pallet open, while when I'm tired I speak more British English because it is less effort to project those consonants. It is why I study the voice and love the voice so much. I really enjoyed this video. :)
Interesting. I heard you on Baba Yetu and never would have guessed you Hispanic. :) Excellent treatment of that song, by the way. You and Peter sounded awesome. You're both very, very talented.
It's also very common thing to sing in a very generic plain US accent. As an example if you listen to a British pop star they almost always sing with an accent that makes them sound from the US.
I'm trying (haha) to learn Portuguese and I noticed that it was much easier to speak it when I lowered my voice. So I know what ur saying! XD And your voice is beautiful no matter what :) Love your songs!!!
I love when you talk in Spanish it sounds so cool, I love the Spanish language! It's so cool the way you can change your voice when you sing because I don't lol! Can't wait for the next gameplay! :D
Didn't realize you had a Hispanic accent. I'm a country boy and have a typical southern accent. Yet when I sing, I actually drop deeper in tone and my accent gets thicker. It makes gospel music a little more interesting. Sigan con el trabajo hermoso, me gusta. Dios bendiga.
I just tried that and my ability to imitate a Spanish accent felt much more natural than forced. I'm pretty good at imitating accents, and being semi bilingual in English and some Spanish I was never able to really do a Spanish accent in English. This is pretty cool.
You know there is one awesome song that you'd perform flawlessly like all of the others, you should do May it be by Enya. This is song is very well known and many artists have covered it because it is such a great song and can sung by anybody and becomes their own song and the way you sing I have no doubt that you would create one of the best if not THEE best renditions for the ages.
I love everything about you! When I think things are too tough in this line of work and only those who sell their sole have a chance, I see you being real and down to earth. On my worst day I can listen to you sing or talk and it fills me with hope for the future! Thank you for just being you and sharing yourself with all of us that fell alone! Much Love! Your biggest Fan!
I found this very interesting indeed. Whenever I speak English and not paying attention to the way I speak, softening up hard consonants, I tend to get a very clear Swedish accent, embarrassingly clear, I also need to change my pacing of words slightly, in Swedish I speak rather slow in English I tend to speak slightly faster. As weird as that may seem :p . It's funny, whenever I do hide it though, according to my old English teacher, I lose almost all trace of accent, whether it's while speaking or singing ( although I'm not very good at the latter).
Well, I'll be damned.... I had no idea you had an accent! Doesn't really matter of course, since i absolutely love your music anyway. I get chills whenever i hear you sing
I'm Swedish, but I speak in a Scottish accent (I learned doing so simply because i think it sounds good), but I can speak in an English or American accent easily as well. I try to sing in Scottish as best I can, but with some songs it's a bit hard, but i found that it's really easy to practice by singing Celtic songs.
Keith Urban is a good example of how accents change. He's an Aussie but sings with an American accent, a VERY strong American accent. How that happened I have no idea but it may have something to do with gaining popularity in the US because he left here for Nashville. I remember decades ago when singers here started singing with a US accent. It pissed me off at the time, still does to some degree. Why they do it I'm not sure. Edit: Then again, Aussie singers like Missy Higgins and John Farnham haven't budged from our accent. Love yours btw :D
***** I keep forgetting Keith Urban in Australian!!!! I just saw an interview with him on Conan, heard him speak, and was like, "What???... Oh, right" hehe! I guess since country music has such a defined and expected "sound", it benefits him professionally.... but I hear what you mean about it being a bit strange.
Malukah Without Reverb Just watched Conan and now I wonder if he left us because of his treatment from those idiots when he was a kid. I remember those shows and especially Bernard King. I meant to say too, maybe that's why he changed his accent when he sings - deliberately? Because he didn't have that accent singing as a teen.
Malukah, no sabia que eres de Mexico, he seguido tu canal algun tiempo y me parece que eres una excelente artista. Has jugado The WItcher 3? hay una cancion ahi que creo que quedaria muy bien con tu estilo
there is this forbidden song in this book called Red Rising, and i think your voice would go BEAUTIFULLY with it! i imagine it like the Dragonborn song. it has yet to be sung, so i cant imagine anyone else better to go with the song
When people sing, accents are actually regulated into a cleaner English. It is actually a very strange thing that many singers do subconsciously. It works in a similar way that people can change their accents
Most people have a different sound in different languages. I know I do, and singing at least in may cultures crosses the boundaries because of musical qualities some how.

Agreed! Though I've never met her, I get the feeling she's about the sweetest person you could ever meet - and all about love.
It makes perfect sense. Thank you for your amazing music!
I'd love to hear you perform an original song in Espanol!
look up 'Duele Despertar' under the name Judith de Los Santos

same here buddy
you have such a beautiful singing voice, ive even seen several skyrim and oblivion roleplayer use your covers for intro songs and things like that, keep up the amazing singing, hell.. you can probably become famous singer making albums
Oooh, this is a super cool observation! :D
You have a great voice i wouldn't worry to much about the change when you sing. Alot of british singers sound american when they sing. That's just the way singing is, you're vocal cords expand and change during singing :D
+Killercoldice22 My mom noticed this a long time ago. She and I agree that it's fascinating!
This isn't exactly true; it depends on where you are from. I have heard native English speakers who pronounce their s words the way you say isn't English. It's not incorrect; it's only not normal. It's arguably more correct.
Daniel Trindade /z/? What? How do you pronounce the z in english?
I always assumed you were Irish. Haha, that means you have the most envied tone in music. Plus, it just adds this feeling to her music, an ethereal, Celtic feel. Your music is amazing, and I hope to hear more from you in the future. Gratias, Me Amica.
RequiemOfTheFirst You are very, very kind! Hehehe! I think if I had a past life, maybe I was Irish. I am so drawn to that style of music and singing!
Haha, it shows. From an Irishman to a woman whose soul I am certain is Irish: Cead Milé Failte, Sassenach.
It is an amazing style. Haha, from an Irishman to a woman whose soul is undoubtedly Irish: Cead Milé Failte-One Hundred Thousand Greetings.
i fully expected to enjoy this video, even still it was far more interesting than i expected. thanks mal!
Any language she happens to speak, I am still in love with this goddess.
An excellent observation on "voicing". Thank you for sharing that insight!
your voice is beautiful! i think music is universal, language is used more in talking (conversation, gathering data and opinions) through dialogue.
That is so cool. I never new you where Mexican. Its great to hear both voices. Way cool
i can hear you sing in any language even if i don't understand i love you voice and you have such talent i listen to your music all the time.
+zerocolossus
The only thing I know how to say in Spanish is "me gusto burrito mucho!" :D
That's a very important notion you made me realize, about "where" the language is spoken.
Excellent treatment of that song, by the way. You and Peter sounded awesome. You're both very, very talented.
Your singing voice in incredible, doesnt matter if you have a accent or not. keep up the good work!
It's also very common thing to sing in a very generic plain US accent. As an example if you listen to a British pop star they almost always sing with an accent that makes them sound from the US.
I love your voice in spanish. Love all your music to Malu!! : )
Dios bendiga.
keep up the good work.i absolutely love what you are doing.
Malu YOU are GREAT ! Thanks for all this wonderfull Songs . You touch my Soul , best wishes from Germany. Sorry for my english :-)
NOOO! despues de tanto tiempo me entero que hablas español! Dios existe! me encantan tus canciones, tienes una voz increible!
You're the best kind of weird. Love your work.
They always told us in choir that accents aren't heard when you sing. Not that I believe that necessarily but I found it an interesting claim.
Grande Malukah :D ..Saludos!
The beatles, Adele, and others also lose their accents when they sing. It's very common to sing differently than we speak.
I just tried that and my ability to imitate a Spanish accent felt much more natural than forced. I'm pretty good at imitating accents, and being semi bilingual in English and some Spanish I was never able to really do a Spanish accent in English. This is pretty cool.
That is actually really interesting. I've never heard of nor considered resonance as a factor in accents.
I love your accent and your amazing singing voice
Whether I hear your accent or not in your videos I still love them! :)
Kasumi San I am glad! Thank you!
malu subiras mas videos de thor? son muy buenos y saludos desde mission texas
Joshua Whisnant Joshua, thank you for the beautiful beauuuuutiful message.
In Skyrin you can go to Dawnstar and there is a secret chest where you get all the merchants items including money and ingredients.
I think your accent shows only when singing rrrr but I like that, because Bavarian also has the rolling r so it's natural for me to hear this sound.
I try to sing in Scottish as best I can, but with some songs it's a bit hard, but i found that it's really easy to practice by singing Celtic songs.
either way you have a beautiful voice
awesome! one of the better explanations of how this works for singers I have heard...
I'd love to hear some songs in Spanish, though! :)
I love my hispanic friends, I can just listen to this and hear all of them. Boys and Girls.
there is this forbidden song in this book called Red Rising, and i think your voice would go BEAUTIFULLY with it! i imagine it like the Dragonborn song. it has yet to be sung, so i cant imagine anyone else better to go with the song
When people sing, accents are actually regulated into a cleaner English. It is actually a very strange thing that many singers do subconsciously. It works in a similar way that people can change their accents
es un buen concepto, realmente me esta ayudando mucho a hacer que se deje de notar mi acento colombiano
Most people have a different sound in different languages. I know I do, and singing at least in may cultures crosses the boundaries because of musical qualities some how.
