I absolutely knew that putting Winter Soldier in tier 2 was gonna be controversial but i'm STANDING MY GROUND and your peer pressure won't get to me. It's brilliant and good and ace but not game changing and crucial. Bury me in the flag I planted on this hill.
I’ve seen pretty much every movie and saw everything from black panther until end game without seeing winter soldier, I’ve seen it now though it’s a great movie but it’s not necessary to understand the universe tbh
would have been very disappointed if “let’s start at the very beginning” was not immediately followed by “a very good place to start” but thankfully i can rest easy in the knowledge that daniel will never let me down
Having never watched a marvel movie and knowing nothing about the plot I watched Thor Ragnarok in the first lockdown and my GOD did I get a shock when Mark Ruffalo turned into the Hulk....I subsequently watch every single one of them in order and it was the best part of my lockdown (apart from maybe the first hulk and ant Man 2)
i contest that this is a good list for your criteria but also most of my fave films aren't on the list therefore your criteria is wrong FRIENDSHIP CANCELLED
As someone completely uninterested in superhero films but still wondering what it is I'm missing, this is perfect! (Everything is more interesting wrapped up in a Dan-shaped parcel.)
I could not care less about most Marvel movies outside of Black Panther, but I love watching people talk about stuff they love and your editing is top notch. Vvvvvvv well done Dan
Would love a follow up version where you give all your thoughts spoilers and all! I'm going to rewatch the starter kit as a weekend reward in lockdown :D
Captain America: Winter Soldier not being a must watch admittedly broke my heart far more than arguably reasonable. (The tone, the character developments, the flashbacks, COME ON!) If it really has to be left out of the must watch list, then it definitely should be the first night in film of the bunch.
Im so glad GOTG vol 2 is getting some much deserved love, Its my favourite Mcu movie just because it is so packed full of heart and makes me the most emotional and happy and is the film i feel like i always need to watch to cheer myself up.
I'm a die hard lore-ist and as such say, watch all of them...and in MCU chronical order, so...start with Captain America: First Avenger...and end with Endgame. But...the funniest bit of this video..."Pattinson hold up with that kid from Stranger Things" OMG...I spit up my tea, sis.
Genuinely considering tackling the “must watch” films after watching this. Have only seen Guardians of the Galaxy but you have done a VERY good job of convincing me I need to watch more of these films
the one film I would add to the list is Thor Ragnarok but more because it's just really good (and has Jeff Goldblum), rather than being important to the overall plot of the MCU. Other than that I agree wholeheartedly with your selection. Loved the video thanks Dan :)
This video actually came at the perfect time. I've seen a couple Marvel movies here and there but I've recently gotten really interested and wasn't really sure where to start.
Having watched all the Marvel movies move than once, hearing Dan's opinion about them and loving the references. I need more of Dan talking about Thor!!
I am a person who once said ‘I have never watched any Marvel films except that Batman one’ and you can imagine how that went down so maybe it is time for An Education I thank you both for your v handy list of must-watches and for the 20 minutes of entertainment 🙏🏻
I NEED THIS SO BAD I'm trying to watch all the marvel films so that I have a really good understanding of the characters and can fully appreciate falcon and the winter soldier (I watched Wanda vision and loved it but it could have been even better if I got to know Wanda and vision before vision died haha) so far have loved captain America films but am suffering through the iron man ones...
I definitely wasn't expecting to cry watching this but then 18:00 happened and I remembered how much I miss those little dark rooms and... yep I am all of the sad right now
this is interesting because i have not that much interest in mcu in general but i loved black panther, and guardians of the galaxy, which i think all don't require that much background knowledge?
They are similar to dr strange and Ant-Man! They have their own storyline without crossing into the others too much. In the later movies the storylines intertwine a lot more. I think you picked two excellent movies to watch without needing to watch the others
having just started a full marvel watch through after years of being told to, it is fair to say that I nearly shat my pants when you said that there were 50 days worth of movies :o
Pretty sure i’ve only seen Iron Man 1, Avengers Assemble, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy vol 1 and vol 2, and Black Panther but i’m certainly tempted now to honestly just watch everything, I mean its covid so i’ve got nothing else on
Babe I about cried during your rundown of endgame! I agree with your picks!! Especially since no movie is kicked out entirely,, there’s always a need for a good rainy day film
I am not a huge marvel fan, but I have seen all the movies, and I will never ever forget the moments in end game where everyone in the cinema just roared in unison AND i also love watching people talk about things they love so, woo great vid DJL
I don’t think I’ll ever watch any of these films, unless I’m forced to. But somehow I watched the whole 19 minutes of this video. Way to go Daniel J. Layton. Way to go. You’re rather compelling to watch.
Just revisiting this video to say it maybe saved my relationship? Partner was frustrated at not knowing the backstories on WandaVision; I had a pathological fear of having to watch that many hours of (subpar? Let's go with 'overwhelmingly earnest') films. We watched this video together, took notes, and now we're all caught up with none of the filler. I owe this video such a debt of gratitude for not having to watch the original Hulk.
Oh god when you talked about seeing Endgame in the cinema I nearly cried. That film broke me, I still haven’t rewatched it because it was too 👏🏻 much 👏🏻
I don't particularly watch youtube anymore but I always take the time to watch your videos. We have the same sense of humour so I always end up giggling. HOWEVER YOU HAVE INFURIATED ME. I AM TWENTY-SIX AND FEEL LIKE WRITING A HATE COMMENT OVER THE FACT THAT YOU DID NOT CLASS HOMECOMING AS A MUST WATCH. TONY STARK IS UNCLE BEN. I also watched Endgame in a packed IMAX theatre and it was just incredible. The ROARS out of people when that moment when Cap does the thing with the thing.
After watching this video I came into the comments and was surprised to see that most people were harping on the Winter Solider not being a must-watch, but really I think Ragnarok is the movie that needs to be a must-watch. It just feels like such a turning point, not just for literally every character that's in the movie but also for the marvel universe in general. Mostly just because of how much Thor changes, and also because of finding out where Hulk has been since Age of Ultron and bringing him back into the mix for Infinity War. It feels like such small points to be pointing out but because of how deeply the loss of his father, his hammer, Asgard, and most of his people weighs on Thor throughout Infinity War and Endgame. Also the fact that the opening of Infinity War directly continues the end of Ragnarok it feels like it's necessary to have context to half of Infinity War and I think it sets up the tone of how serious things have gotten for them, even if Asgard getting destroyed had nothing directly to do with Thanos. ((Would like to add that I am just big marvel nerd have seen all the movies in order too many times to admit and don't mean to sound judgemental in any way,, just my unprofessional marvel opinion, loved the video!!))
I'm currently re watching all the films. Up to Captain America Winter Soldier. Will never forget watching all the Avengers films in the cinema. I went on my own to watch Endgame and cheered and cried along with a packed, packed cinema. Love this Starter kit very fun.... I can't believe Iron Man came out in 2008..... how far the MCU and the world has come. Keep it up x
I think I just proved your point- You: “Thor the Dark World” Me: “Haven’t watched that, looked boring” You: “It is mostly set in London” Me: “I should find time at some point tomorrow” Captain America the First Avenger is my comfort film because WW2 History+Marvel+Chris Evans. I mean. Also Chris Pratt was my first gay crush, which, in hindsight, perhaps not a stellar choice, I really could have chosen a bit better *and* a bit less homophobic.
When you mentioned that moment in endgame. I got a chill and teared up just _thinking_ about it. I don't see a lot of movies I'll be honest but damn you're right, movies are magic.
Now do one where you discuss which order to watch them in! (I found a list online when I did a big watch-a-thon, so I know chronologically by release date is not the best strategy.)
i rewatched captain america the first avenger *literally* last night and i plan to rewatch every MCU film in chronological order over the next few weeks so this video is coming at a beautiful time bc i would love to hear your opinion
The content we needed! I mean for real though, when the Edinburgh scene hit in Infinity War that rush of communal joy and cheers in the cinema was unbeatable, especially the deep fried shoutout- perfection to us Scots
Noooo winter soldier is a must watch for sure! It's just such a good character film and so well executed. Apart from that I fully agree with everything you said.
That was an excellent video and the effort gone into it is very much appreciated. Only a few I slightly disagree with but other than that this advice is *STRONG*
I have always liked Marvel films but always felt kinda lost because I couldn't remember all of the details or characters, so I was really happy to watch this video !! Now I know what films exactly to watch so that I can remember everything, love love this !!
I lost track with the MCU and then it became this big overwhelming commitment to catch up. So I’ve been eagerly awaiting this video since you half mentioned it on the ‘gram. It didn’t disappoint! Great work, keep going please!
Out of this entire Marvel starter kit I have only seen Black Panther, as the sheer quantity of MCU films is overwhelming and intimidating, but it was so spectacular that I now need to see anything else that is on its similar level of spectacularity. Owing largely also to the signature whip-smart Daniel J writing and editing of this official ranking - very good indeed x
This was ever so helpful but I wish I’d seen it BEFORE embarking on the marvel journey weeks ago. I have 2 left - this video could have saved me hours of life 😂
Agreed - the Avengers films really capture who each superperson is in a nutshell without requiring viewing of every. other. movie. Do feel that the Infinity Stone arc lends itself to confusion largely because it's a plot device that requires exposition vs. visual character storytelling, ya know?
I really loved this video! I was having a conversation today with a friend that has never watched anything from the MCU, and then BAM, you hit me with this video. I immediatly shared it with her, I hope she enjoys and gets into the MCU. Keep up the great work! I love your stuff!!
exactly what i needed when i went to the cinema to see infinity war having only seen two marvel films before. Guardians of the galaxy vol 2 and black panther. i was confused
every single time you said something wasn't a must watch I thought "I disagree" and then at the end I realized: my list would be every movie which definitely defeats the purpose. I love them all and I loved your takes, thanks for sharing!
I actually love this, I'm someone who doesn't have much of an attention span for movies, but as soon as it's on I'm invested 🙌 this makes me want to watch the ones I haven't yet!
Only just catching up with this, cackling at so much but especially at "if you like films like me" because I feel very called out. Completely agree with almost everything but I will fight for Ragnarok to be a must watch. Gonna go binge the MCU now thanks.
This video reminded me of how I walked into the cinema to watch Infinity War having only seen Avengers 1 (once, years ago, & had mostly forgotten what happened), GotG 1 & 2, Black Panther, and Dr Strange. The experience was incredible (it was a very full cinema) but I also hadn't a clue who half the characters were or what was going on!
A very good ranking although I disagree with you on The Winter Soldier and Gardians, but fair points were made. Anyway you made me tear up when you talked about the communal experience in movie theaters because I miss the big screen so much. Cheers for making a film student cry, I'm off now to re-watch Endgame.
Dan I was waiting for a lil detailed rant about the Greenwich tube station bit in Thor Dark World but I will settle for a lil reference that made me smile
I absolutely knew that putting Winter Soldier in tier 2 was gonna be controversial but i'm STANDING MY GROUND and your peer pressure won't get to me. It's brilliant and good and ace but not game changing and crucial. Bury me in the flag I planted on this hill.
I’ve seen every movie several times, I’m sat here arguing with my phone screen. What do you have against the captain America’s?!?
plus, they put natasha in those horrible heeled sneakers.
I am the only one who doesn’t give a toss about Bucky Barnes? What am I missing? Why does everyone love him so much? He’s boring! Am I the only one?!
It’s actually the only one I haven’t seen and I survived without it 😬
I’ve seen pretty much every movie and saw everything from black panther until end game without seeing winter soldier, I’ve seen it now though it’s a great movie but it’s not necessary to understand the universe tbh
would have been very disappointed if “let’s start at the very beginning” was not immediately followed by “a very good place to start” but thankfully i can rest easy in the knowledge that daniel will never let me down
I’ve watched all of them but I’m not here for marvel, I’m here for Daniel J.
Same lol
Who isn’t! He’s fabulous
Have I seen every MCU movie several times? Yes. Am I still watching the whole video because I love you and also Marvel? Yes!
the way I cackled when you said thanos is dressed as rupaul
High key my fave joke in the video
Having never watched a marvel movie and knowing nothing about the plot I watched Thor Ragnarok in the first lockdown and my GOD did I get a shock when Mark Ruffalo turned into the Hulk....I subsequently watch every single one of them in order and it was the best part of my lockdown (apart from maybe the first hulk and ant Man 2)
Lol!
Saw Civil War in a packed IMAX and when The Bicep happened there was a huge collective gasp and I will never forget that
Oh, the Human Experience.
i watched it by myself at home on my laptop and when it happened an audible “…oh” left my mouth so i’m glad i’m not alone
I love how you said Spiderman at 12:50, like it was his surname: Spidermen.
i contest that this is a good list for your criteria but also most of my fave films aren't on the list therefore your criteria is wrong FRIENDSHIP CANCELLED
As someone completely uninterested in superhero films but still wondering what it is I'm missing, this is perfect!
(Everything is more interesting wrapped up in a Dan-shaped parcel.)
Don't think I'll ever stop laughing at the image of everyone at the avengers premiere while Dan just has a cosy night in with Greg Wallace 😂😂
The roar though. That was in my screening too. Cheers, yelps, roars, clapping, the works. It was such an amazing moment to experience
And mine! Literally cheering and crying and clapping all at the same time! The single best cinematic moment I've ever experienced!
I could not care less about most Marvel movies outside of Black Panther, but I love watching people talk about stuff they love and your editing is top notch. Vvvvvvv well done Dan

If nothing else, watch Ragnarok if you enjoyed Guardians. If not for the plot, just for the greatness of the movie
the one film I would add to the list is Thor Ragnarok but more because it's just really good (and has Jeff Goldblum), rather than being important to the overall plot of the MCU. Other than that I agree wholeheartedly with your selection. Loved the video thanks Dan :)
This video actually came at the perfect time. I've seen a couple Marvel movies here and there but I've recently gotten really interested and wasn't really sure where to start.
seeing endgame in a theater was honestly a magical experience that I’m not sure I’ll have again. 10 years of well-crafted build up really pays off!!!
Having watched all the Marvel movies move than once, hearing Dan's opinion about them and loving the references.
I need more of Dan talking about Thor!!

so far have loved captain America films but am suffering through the iron man ones...
The way I audibly laughed at the Andy Serkis comment, thank you for that!
Cracking fun, great jokes and a good assessment of what NEEDS to be seen. Thanks, Dan!
I definitely wasn't expecting to cry watching this but then 18:00 happened and I remembered how much I miss those little dark rooms and... yep I am all of the sad right now

already a massive marvel fan but watching this regardless as listening to Dan talk just makes me very happy
I can’t believe Dan sacrificed himself to watch the films for us. The true superhero we all need
having just started a full marvel watch through after years of being told to, it is fair to say that I nearly shat my pants when you said that there were 50 days worth of movies :o

The fact that my eyes are teary just having you mention that bit in endgame says a lot :’)
I needed this so much! I've been wanting to re-watch but cannot be arsed to watch every single film (again) so this is just *chefs kiss*
I am not a huge marvel fan, but I have seen all the movies, and I will never ever forget the moments in end game where everyone in the cinema just roared in unison AND i also love watching people talk about things they love so, woo great vid DJL

Oh good, I'm glad you mentioned Iron Man 3 is a Christmas move so I didn't have to. Your guide is thus, solid.
I was so gripped by this video that I was surprised to see the "phase three" title, and we had already passed phase two!
Just revisiting this video to say it maybe saved my relationship? Partner was frustrated at not knowing the backstories on WandaVision; I had a pathological fear of having to watch that many hours of (subpar? Let's go with 'overwhelmingly earnest') films. I’m putting this video in the Must Watch category, thank you Danny J Lay
16:01 "hahaha I am only playing a game at you!" - my boyfriend and I incessantly quoting this at each other
Same!
I have seen every MCU film several times but I will continue to watch this video purely for Daniel J's opinion!
I don't particularly watch youtube anymore but I always take the time to watch your videos. We have the same sense of humour so I always end up giggling.

Love this Starter kit very fun.... I can't believe Iron Man came out in 2008..... how far the MCU and the world has come. Keep it up x
iIm doing a rewatch of everything MCU and WOW I had no memory of Liv being in the Hulk movie. Was such a surprise when she showed up.
the delivery of "and jude law ,,,,, has the same birthday as me" was incredible
I think I just proved your point-
You: “Thor the Dark World”
Me: “Haven’t watched that, looked boring”
You: “It is mostly set in London”
Me: “I should find time at some point tomorrow”
Captain America the First Avenger is my comfort film because WW2 History+Marvel+Chris Evans. I mean.
Also Chris Pratt was my first gay crush, which, in hindsight, perhaps not a stellar choice, I really could have chosen a bit better *and* a bit less homophobic.
How are we NOT gonna talk about Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2? What a diamond in the rough
When you mentioned that moment in endgame. I got a chill and teared up just _thinking_ about it. I don't see a lot of movies I'll be honest but damn you're right, movies are magic.
I love how passionately you talk about the things you love. This was a cracking video!!
Thanks for taking the time to make this!! Can’t wait to watch in the 🛀
I think we all gasped with that bicep moment.
always love your videos, don’t give up!🤗🤗
Now do one where you discuss which order to watch them in! (I found a list online when I did a big watch-a-thon, so I know chronologically by release date is not the best strategy.)
I loved every single joke made, this was a lovely video to watch x
I’ve seen every marvel film several times. Still love this little vid✌🏻
I've watched most, if not all of these films and know how good they are? Did I still watch this video? Hell fucking yeah
i rewatched captain america the first avenger *literally* last night and i plan to rewatch every MCU film in chronological order over the next few weeks so this video is coming at a beautiful time bc i would love to hear your opinion
I'm so glad there are more people supporting Thor: The Dark World, it gets so much unnecessary hate
Commenting for engagement cause homeboy deserves it.
Wow this video made me realize that I've watched more Marvel films than I thought, but also I haven't seen ANY of the must-watch ones 😅
I got full-body chills from just you describing Black Panther
The content we needed! I mean for real though, when the Edinburgh scene hit in Infinity War that rush of communal joy and cheers in the cinema was unbeatable, especially the deep fried shoutout- perfection to us Scots
Noooo winter soldier is a must watch for sure! It's just such a good character film and so well executed. Apart from that I fully agree with everything you said.
I love seeing you make these type of videos!
Really needed this in lockdown 1 when I watched the whole lot....good work!
I too like big arms
I laughed out loud at so many moments in this video... a masterpiece!!
Commenting for the algorithm! Had great fun with this video 🖤
Slaves to the Algorithm 🙏🏻
Your passion and enthusiasm for film is both infectious and charming to behold. Love your content. Keep it coming!
I have watched many of these marvel movie guides and THIS is the only one that has ACTUALLY made me want to watch any if not quite a few of them x
I have 2 left - this video could have saved me hours of life 😂
Maguffin goes in the word bank, can’t wait to use it in scrabble
I love to hear someone unpretentiously gush and obsess over the same things I gush and obsess over, so thank you for this (:
“Trust No Bitch” perfectly sums up my feelings towards the MCU
Hearing you describe the cinema experience most of us had for endgame gave me chills SO MANY CHILLS DANIEL
6:09 - 'Was this the kind of commentary you were expecting?'
Honestly, yes. Expecting and hoping for.
exactly what i needed when i went to the cinema to see infinity war having only seen two marvel films before. Guardians of the galaxy vol 2 and black panther. i was confused
every single time you said something wasn't a must watch I thought "I disagree" and then at the end I realized: my list would be every movie which definitely defeats the purpose.
I love them all and I loved your takes, thanks for sharing!
A very well done list, I might change things up a bit... slightly, but as a beginners guide... well done indeed!
Never seen any of the Thor movies, but you sold me on the dark elves
I am here pretending I haven't seen all the MCU films over 100 times, just to enjoy my fav creator talking about my fav films
I swear, I have been waiting for this video for some time and I wasn't disappointed. This was ✨must watch✨ tier!
Please make a Star Wars version omg I absolutely loved this
"I am only playing a game at you" was for some reason very funny to me
Dan I was waiting for a lil detailed rant about the Greenwich tube station bit in Thor Dark World but I will settle for a lil reference that made me smile
We're saving that for the big video wherein I make the case that Thor 2 is deeply underappreciated.
