Wherein I go through my wardrobe to make some space and get rid of what doesn't Spark Joy... Twitter / danieljlayton Instagram / danieljlayton Patreon: / danieljlayton
Dan's videos are definitely comfort content. As soon as I see them pop up on my from page I click one them. And they always make me feel better when I'm depressed or anxious.
been quite sad bc i get described as "the one with the cool trousers" and most of my trousers don't fit anymore. so i've been having a go on grandma's old sewing machine and upsizing them. it's not neat but i get my clothes back so i'm happy. i've also noticed it feels so good to wear stuff you made. gives me something to show off about lol
I love that bit about fast fashion doesn’t have to be as fast if you take care of it. It’s such a key note to have in the fast fashion conversation that if you take care of it and continue to wear it then it can justify itself more
It's definitely a good point. The first thing we can do when we learn about fast fashion is simply wearing what we have and taking care of it. It's not helpful to immediately go buy new things from sustainable brands.
As someone who is also feeling a bit sad about their own wardrobe this makes me want to go through my own closet and make space for things that will make me happy! ❤
Definitely feel the same way, being Trans too means I have a lot of old hand me downs from the man who was never there that I really need to get around, well, getting rid of and filling my wardrobe with more that represents me in the now. Everyone deserves some clothes that make them feel euphoric.
Looking after your clothes tip: knitwear is better folded rather than hung up, as it tends to stretch and get damaged at the shoulder. If you don't have drawers, you can always hang them on the horizontal bar part of a hanger 👍 I hope you find clothes that bring you joy this year Dan 🎉
Oh now I don’t mind the stretching, as I do rather like my clothing draped all over me like I’m a derelict building, but the shoulder damage simply won’t do!!!!
I've never really been a watcher of vlog content but there's something about your channel that just makes me really comfortable, such that i've stuck around so long. It's always a nice surprise to see one of your videos in my feed, like a text from a good friend you made in school who you don't keep up fully with but also really don't want to let go of
Dan saying "I love the aesthatic of minimalism but I also like stuff" is one of the things that has spoken too my soul the most today. I am EXACTLY the same, and on the verge of moving to a new place so I am confronted with how much stuff I actually have. Thanks for the inspiration I will marie kondo some stuff tomorrow I think.
Knitted sweaters will last longer in the drawer, the hangers can stretch them you can see this a little bit with the green one. This was a comforting video btw
Very relatable, very complicated feelings involved indeed. Feeling good is essential, and yes, clothes is a huge part of how we present ourselves (duh!), so it matters a lot. Glad you did this for yourself - and that you shared it with us 😁🕺
If you have a favourite sweater that feels too short, you just need to find a good layering piece, like a long t-shirt to compensate. The t-shirt doesn't even have to look good on it's own, it's purpose is to look good under the sweater. I think a darker gray t-shirt would look great under the gray onewith a zipper that felt too short :) (Sorry if this is obvious, took me like 30 years to figure it out myself lol.)
I love the walk into the kitchen and the sorta fourth wall break..I was fully watching like “that’s a lot of commitment to walk in set the camera up then walk back out with the stuff to walk back in with the stuff..”
I hear you, my magpie brother; clean lines v my stuff. Years ago, there was an artist/designer named Mary Englebrite whose design esthetic was to LAYER our stuff. THAT style i understood! 😉
There really can be something so cathartic about clearing out your clothes like that. Obviously it was for quite different reasons, but when I cleared out all of my old pre-transition clothes last year, it was such a cleansing experience. I think clothes are SO tied to our identities, so clearing out clothes is almost an opportunity to take stock of who you are as a person. Even with what you've done here, it feels like part of the question you've been asking is 'does this serve the person I am NOW, rather than the person I was when I bought it'. The answer may be more nuanced than it was for a lot of my clothes, where it was a much simpler case of ditching men's clothes, but it's a similar process.
Now this is the Daniel J. Layton I (parasocially) know and love! I totally agree, and recently did a cleanout myself(I used to like wearing shirts, then I split up with my ex, those 20 shirts are going now .-.) My favourite piece of clothing is a synthetic neon orange hoodie, which I got from a frisbeegolf event, it takes the venndiagram of high-vis and comfort seriously :D Also, that closing sentence is a masterpiece.
This feels very validating. Lately I've been lamenting the clothes I can't fit in any more. My hobbies get in the way of an exercise regime and we've been trying lately, but I can't escape the post 30s podge. I have my favourite clothes and more often they're the comfy figure hiding kind and I want to explore my 30s fashion a bit more. Thanks for the natter Dan!
I'm so glad you did a full circle with that top you mentioned in the last video because I was wondering if you still had it and had managed to wear it!
As per usual, this was a lovely and comforting video. Gives the vibe of listening to a voice note of a friend you only get to catch up with sporadically
I recently changed up my wardrobe, realised the whole black jeans / dark clothes was just bringing my mood down. Changed to very light blue jeans and more colourful solid colour tshirts and my mood lifted hugely (tbh I was surprised how much it did).
I relate to this so deeply. I was 24 when the pandemic started, and between lack of movement due to that and just age changing my body, there are items in my closet that I adore, but I need to accept that I will never be able to wear them again. This is definitely helping me get that into my skull! And I also wear my clothes till the end, so most things I own are at least 4 years old, some I've had since high school!
currently on a semester abroad and I have very few clothes with me and it both makes me miss some clothes I didnt bring and also make me very aware of my body and my style in what i chose to bring and I really need to go to a 2nd hand shop and go a bit ham and get some stuff that makes me feel *fun* again
As a person who does the sewing thing (and a lot of my knowledge is from a historical dress background) I think we've really moved away from making the clothes fit to our bodies and towards making our bodies fit to the clothes which is effectively impossible. When I'm trying on new clothes I don't just ask myself "does this fit me and do I like it?", instead I ask "how does this fit? Does it support my body? Does it present me in the way I want?"; I like to think of wearing clothes as a form of art, even in the everyday, so it's my body and the clothing working together to build a curated look, and art is unique and beautiful and something different from 'popular' or 'fashionable' or the new 'it' thing. The summation of this is that I think if you don't like how you look in something that's not saying your body looks bad or the clothing looks bad, it's just saying that they're not a match.
I NEED a clear out! A ruthless clear out! I don't think it'd make much of a dent in my wardrobe, but I should definitely have a stern word with myself about things I no longer wear and can stop holding on to "just in case"
Top tip: if you're the one invading the partners domecile, just start moving furniture to help in the process, overexert yourself, and then your partner will suddenly become inclined to find space! My spine was worth it!
I feel ya, I'm not vibing with most of my clothes. I watched Emily in Paris an thought about how boring my look is compared to what sparks joy to me, some of it is about being insecure a lot of it is about my options as a plus size wearer, I'm hoping to have more fun in my wardrobe in the future :)
Oh my god the options and the awareness of places that DO have those options is so frustrating!! But wear what sparks joy without fear, and over time you figure it out! For instance, I’ve become much less self conscious of buying jumpers or jackets one might find in the “women’s” section if I think they’ll suit me
I am fully here for 2016-style content. It sparks much joy! (The whole your-body-keeps-changing-as-you-age thing, though. It can go straight in the bin, and I'm not even going to thank it for its service.)
not sure how well this transfers to men's fashion (though you seem like that might not bother you), but as a person who also has a round face and doesn't feel good about a traditional t-shirt neckline, i love a boat neck! A shallow horizontal curve, it does a great job opening up the shoulders and collarbones without the dramatics of the V-neck. I feel like that might suit you. (Unless I've seen you in them already and you're reading this going "yeah, *obviously* Isuit them, where have you been the last year or two".)
I have one of those ikea boxes, put a mini dehumidifier in or near it!! I find that when my clothes are stored it just keeps them smelling fresher (I’m partway through the video whilst commenting so ignore if you already have) :D
this was a nice video, thank u :) I'm a bit reluctant to sort my clothes atm because I find it SO hard to find a good replacement nowadays?? I feel like the quality of clothes has gone down significantly :( But starting to separate summer/winter clothes might be a good start anyway 🤗
Dan: new video coming, throw back content Me: 😲 I'll set a timer Loved this Dan, I can relate to a lot of the things you've said about body image and food and exercise. Succint as always. Thank you x
I hate to say that I have lost some respect because of this video. Why are you getting the apple jack daniels, actually vile, just drink the regular it's so much better in my opinion.
Very “long distance friend on facetime” vibes from this video.
LOVE THAT FOR US
Absolutely, this is how I hang out with my sister.

A fun thing about doing it was realising there’s actually a lot of stuff there that DOES make me happy after all!

Life is pretty hard right now so thank you for such a cozy video, it makes me think that maybe everything might be okay
Everything will be all right in the end - if it’s not all right, it’s not the end!
@@DanLayton thank you, you are my favourite at wrestletalk, I’m always happier when I see you on the screen :)
Thank you Dan, as always. I enjoyed sitting on the end of your bed with my cup of tea while you sorted through your stuff.

so glad i’m not the only one who has such a specific internal monologue when going through clothes. it all looks great, i support all your choices x

Love this, very cosy and comforting!
I loved every moment of this!

She cosplays many different things!! Lots of Spiderman but also stuff that she grew up with that she gets to be as a grown up, which I find very fun
Not trying to trans your gender but I saw this title and I thought "mood"

I have three (three) different Jack Daniels, and the Apple one was the one I was gifted, SO BE JUDGEMENTAL ELSEWHERE
