Did what you said and I won my first iRace ever. The leaders wrecked and I tried to give tonnes of space and wound up in the lead on lap one, then just drove in clean air to victory!
I have 20 years sim racing experience and 10 years in iRacing and I have to say this video is the perfect advice for new simracers and iracers. Copy Dave's mentality into all your online races and you will do well. This video is so perfect it looked scripted because each car did exactly what was expected of them. Judge the behavior of the other drivers, expect the worst, remember the names of the dangerous guys and the good clean guys. the racing only gets better from there.
Thankyou Ben
@@Aquivoy My first experience with a Sim was Indianapolis 500 in 1991, ironically by Papyrus, who have evolved into iRacing.
@@RubberStigahh indy 500.. I loved that game. first game I remember with bits flying off the car when you crashed. so the crashes were glorious.
@@agum820 ya!
Well said :-)
Getting a wheel tomorrow and picking up iRacing. Love this guy, feels like a driving instructor. Thanks man :)
There is a promo code to start with for new members: PR-HotLaps three months for just 4 $, this is the cheapest deal you can get right now.
@@turektomasz Doh already subbed, all good though. Really loving it so far :) Thanks for the heads up though Tom!
@@turektomasz I know this is a year later, but I've been contemplating dropping the hammer and signing up, and your promo worked for me today and now I can try it out and see how I like it at a fraction of the cost. Thanks Tom.
You got me out of rooky within 3 hours. Beers on me!
Only takes 5 or 6 clean races
Old account Even less
@@drazenbudis7881It seems new accounts also,' just got out with 3 races
@@rosvokomppania same, out quick with 4 races, good to have won them all too!
Yeah, got out within 4 races.
The biggest issue with rookie class is guys like the yellow car....
I first watched this video about nine months ago when I was first thinking about getting into iracing. Now that I'm in my third season, I REALLY understand what all you're talking about. Confidence and the correct mind-set are key to driving well in my opinion. I would encourage all Rookies to come back here and rewatch this after several months of racing. Practice with a purpose.
You race how I race in real life. Keep it clean, be patient, let them make mistakes.
This is just Racing Intelligence explained. I wish everyone would take a fair and calculated approach like that.
watched this and changed my perspective . got out of rookies in my first week thanks to this video . rookies is a mind set we all fall back into every once and a while . races are an endurance not a sprint to the first corner
I'm going to send this video to a friend of mine who is struggling to get through the ranks. Really great explanation, thanks!
I stsrted iRacing this week and had my first race today... 11th to 5th following your strategies. That finish with a pair of solid TT finishes had me out of rookie class in 3 hours. Love your videos Dave... keep‘em coming.
Dave was very consistent lap after lap. Even if you don't have the best lines, knowing your marks and actions and being repeatable is very helpful.
Great video and perfect demonstration for exactly what you are talking about, I wish I had watched more videos like this when I started Iracing, as someone who only raced AI i I was unprepared for online racing, half the races I got wrecked out by crazy drivers like in the video, only recently I have decided to take the approach in the video :)
retitle: How to guarantee a p4 from the back of the pack :-)
great advice,, will serve you in any class in online racing.
Hell yeah man. Well done on this while talking us through it the whole time!! Well done!!
Great video. No fluff just straight talking to the point. Subscribed
This is good advice. For me coming from racing only "arcade" racing games on Xbox I was highly inconsistent so I also had to work on that. In games like Forza you only do 3-5 laps and then move onto another circuit in a different car. It really helped my consistency to do lots of practice in a single car and making sure that I was good enough to take part in a race.
Didn't even know you did videos til I saw you on TV in an iRace of some kind. And I didn't know this was your vid, just clicked on it randomly and was like "hey I know this guy!" So watched it, enjoyed it. Your commentary throughout the race was very good. Well done.
I went the oval route, but this is basically what I did. I didn't qualify at first, but its always a good thing to do so. I just took my time, and let people pass me. Gave me confidence driving as well.
Great video Dave. Really informative and instructional
A very useful walkthrough a rookie race, thanks. Sage advice as always.
Great points. I will definitely use the tips when I start rookies!
that was brilliant. do more of these commentary videos, great racing!
G'Day and thanks for this. A mate has got me interested in iRacing and this is invaluable advice. Can't wait to get his old G29 so I can start. New Sub!
Love your videos! I'm getting into sim racing and your channel helps out a lot!
Hey nice one. Pleased I could help 😁
When I was going out of Rookies, my tactic was always to start from the pits, catch up to the rest then keep a safe distance so I wouldn't get caught up in their crashes. About half way through you'll be in the top 5. Then the tactic turns to going a little bit closer to stress the guy in front to make a mistake, but avoid getting caught up in his crash. Look for where they struggle, then put pressure on them aproaching that point. Not even once did I attempt a propper overtake. Won several races doing this. But it all feels like cheating. Not a fun way to race.
I wouldn't say cheating. You're definitely just taking advantage of people's egos and their emotions "I'm not going to let that guy through, I want to keep this position, I'll do anything to keep it that way" and just ends up doing a horrible mistake thinking it would work, or they just straight up do something either their car can't handle or they themselves as a driver still don't understand.
Thanks bro. Great demo and Great Coaching...
Worked for me, also got me to C class quickly too. I found letting faster drivers through and telling them which side to pass me and when helped too. I also let slower drivers know when and which side I was about to pass on too.
Excellent racing psychology at any level really--comparatively speaking.
Took me too long to realize you had a camera on your feet. Nice double foot!
Thanks Dave...im new in Iracing and is always good have some help. Appreciate that
i was watching this so seriously, caught up in the racing, looking at your moves to see how i can best control my car in game myself and then you just said "this guy could be a *different kettle of fish* entirely" and i just lost it lol, never heard that phrase before
good video though mate, fun to watch definitely
Good man got out of the rookies in a few hours.thanks man.
Thanks. ...I have been too afraid to even sign up for a race. I have HOURS of practice. You put it in perspective. Time to take the plunge.
Do it. Just test out as a practice session with other cars. You'll be fine I promise 😁
@@davecamm, much thanks for the videos and advice associated with them. I've watched this particular one more than a few times and once before beginning the "Career" yesterday afternoon; two races, one this morning at O'Dark Thirty....I am out of Rookie Class. Again, my thanks for the sound advice.
good advice and nice video Dave
this video is a godsend, about to sub thankx for the good advice hopefully.i can get out of rookies!
Hey bud. Good luck. 😁
I literally just got this sim three days ago and I am already out of the rookie class because I just let them all take each other out on lap 1 or fight for position and I cruise into top 5 at the end.
That's the best way 😁
Lol I've been trying to do this and have been targeted 3 times by idiots! Covid-19 factor in calling it lol.
fresh and clean driving
One thing I wish I new about was fast repair
Thanks for strategy recommendations .. new to Sim racing / iRacing .. thanks
Awesome video man! I might start uploading some of my races with commentary. I am not as calm and cool during races as you though hahahaha.
Every time I watch your vids it’s like a breath of fresh air. It’s nice to hear someone like me haha. Where are you from? Class content as well, mate!
North Cumbria originally 👍
Brilliant video!!
you make this look so simple, wow!
Haha, thanks man. I'm not sure about that though :)
@@davecamm I know you humble but lets keep it 100, you like Alien status, great driving and commentating...
@@justindelbeau6854 you're very kind. Thank you Sir
I was racing in between 2011-14 was up in B Class, now I'm hot to getting back in! Unfortunately sold everything back then. :D
Do it! It just keeps getting better and better. If you haven't tried racing in VR, do yourself a favor. It's so immersive it makes for some really incredible experiences.
Kazuki looked a if he was playing using a NES control pad.
Good video, I race myself and am interested in getting I racing myself. Thanks for the tips I subbed.
I got out of rookie class in 3 races, neat!
What Dave doesn't mention is being fast enough to stay behind others waiting for mistakes takes a tonne of practice. I watched this before subscribing to iRacing and assumed all I had to do was cruise around. I was 20 seconds down by lap 2. Still, great mentality to advancing through the licenses.
Well, it kinda sounds to me like "drive like a real racing driver" :D
Just subscribed to your channel great video very informative. Am looking at getting into iracing
Hey thanks for the sub. If you get into iracing you'll have to change your name to Mister Happier 😁
I'm just getting into PC car racing as of Jan 2021, after having not really done any racing games since Gran Turismo 3 on the PS2, which I absolutely loved. I've never used a steering wheel nor pedals, but I do drive in real life and I ride a motorbike. So I decided to skip messing around and go straight for the Fanatec CSL Elite +PS4 bundle with the LC pedals. All thanks to a chance encounter with Forza Horizon 4. I'm sure I'll be checking out iRacing et al in no time :-) Can't wait! Just need to figure out how to set up a sofa-seating position, as I don't have room for a full cockpit, not even a folding one. Either that or the sofa will be ejected from the house haha.
This man is a hardcore gamer
Hi DAVE love your videos. I’ve finally made the decision to join IRacing mainly due to your videos and also Matt Malone’s.
Thx again for great videos.
Hey nice one. Hopefully see you on track 😁
Great video, where do you get your setups? And what kit are you using?
Thanks Dave
Good demo good advice..
Nice... Thanks for that hint. I am always try to get the best position. But not anymore :-)
Best thing to do to get out of rookies is become fast and lead every lap, clean track ahead, clean finish 😉 I don't recommend sticking behind people but trying to win races. Plus it will hurt your top 5 stats or wins. That's what worked for me 8 years ago. Earned my A license in 3 weeks using this technique
That's all well and good if you're the fastest guy on track. If not you're in trouble 😁
some good info. many thx
Nice and clean !!!
love so much this video. like the video is the best.
As we develop day by day,
Always follow your luck
I sincerely hope that your channel will be very big.
Sound advice, I tried of course to gain as many spots as possible...will just hang back and enjoy the view from now :)
How did you get that fancy overlay for the positions and stuff. Is it just a stream over lay or like a mod or something? Great Video btw
Very nice video!! But how do you downshift without using the clutch?
It would've been good to mention when a car ahead starts to crash, it's likely they won't be there by the time you get there. Also an out of control car is likely to go to the outside of a turn.
Subscribed! I'm in!
Dave, since you recommended skipping qualifying, I’ve noticed several others are doing the same thing, thus still placing me in the middle of the pack.
Starting from the pits is even safer
Sorry for being out of topic, but what are your graphics settings here? Yours looks like not all settings are ultra and i love it. No fancy reflections. Do you have them turned off for opponent cars or toned down?
After the race do you have to enter pits for your rookie points to add up? I normally just exit.
unfortunately I don't have money for iRacing but this helped me much! Thank you!
Just got my C lisence last night! Now I can do IMSA!
Awesome. You'll love it 😁
@@davecamm yes, I love IMSA. It's one of the reasons I joined iracing!
I'm thinking about getting a pc as I fancy having a go at iracing. I was just wondering do you have to use your clutch or is it optional?
Optional buddy :)
Great video all rookies should watch this. The standard of the racing here is poor by most and shows how far rookies have to go and why they should take it steadier
Thanks Brad
Great video, very useful. It took me 2 races to get to my D class license. But for some reason I don’t get the same screen layout as you. Like you have on top left screen, you can see what class there are with licence. I don’t see that. What program do you use? Thanks in advance
Hey Marco. What you see on screen are third party overlays. The one I use right now is Racelabapps 👍
Thanks for the info, going to check it 😃
I-racing looks awesome, i think im wasting my time with gran tourismo. Ty for vid Dave.
Got out in 1 day and started last in each... Same about D and I'm 2 races away from B in a couple of weeks
Hello sir great channel, by chance does this simulator get you into feeling your in a real car or does it just feel like a video game with some time put in
When I'm racing I'm racing. Totally engrossed. Probably nowhere near like actually racing but it's as close as I'm ever going to get 😁
thanks for your video dave. I made it out of rookies in 2 races, even with decent results (p6 and p4) i got +0,29 and +0.79 SR and the instant promotion to Class D :) but now, i dont know how to proceed further. Mazda? Skippy? Bmw 12.0?
Thats exactly how I just did my first race.
Qualified 9th. Finished 7th. 0 incidents. Gained .20 safty
This video was brilliant, solid advice, shame that every time I got into practice, qualifying or a race session I just went for it despite the voice in my head saying "slow down, just get to the finish," but it did teach me to let the fastest guys through, then usually one or two of them crash towards the end, this happened often and allowed me to get a couple of podiums when I didn't have the raw pace for it. I managed to get out of rookie class in a day, thanks for your advice, it really helped a lot!
You're welcome Glenn. Pleased it helped 👍
ill try it!
I'm looking to get into iracing this week. I'm guessing its best to start from the back so i could avoid qualifying, or is it better to do the qualifying laps cleanly for SR but go as slow as possible to start at the back?
Ignore this, i see this has already been answered.
Just wondering why you use clutch for up shift but not for down shift?
Great video! Just curious, why don't you use the clutch when down-shifting?
Not needed in the Mazda as long as you blip the throttle and rev match 👍
I was thinking the same thing. But it’s so weird that you can rev match without touching the clutch.
whats are the external apps? you use to pos and relative
That's the same way I did an oval to get out of D class. Surprisingly starting last and even giving space you can finish in top 6......
IRACING: GET OUT OF ROOKIE CLASS!!
Me: i have to do 22 laps!
great Vid! what's your opinion on VR?
Hey buddy. I live VR and have a Rift S. If I didn't create content I'd probably just use that 👍
One thing that I've understood in rookie class is that it's not about racing but just getting your driver rating up. Most of them can't race anyway so just focus on not hitting them and finishing your races.
Delimon007 yea I was almost there then some dude cheated and my safety rating went down to 2.32
How many times do you have to race in each track? I just joined i racing.
Don't rush out of rookies is my advice. Best place to learn, nothing more embarassing than the folk with higher licenses who are miles off the pace. Don't be daft, if youre quick, you'll be up the front and you'll be out of trouble
What are your ffb settings in game and on your wheel?
What overlay is that with the positions and race info?
how does it work? you use clutch to upshift but you dont use it when you downshift? whats the magic behind this?
hi dave thanks
Hello, are u using blip clutch? I just starting iracing and i dont get it how this cluthes work thxs
He has a manual clutch (you can see it on his foot cam). Auto blip is for if you have a sequential setup such as paddles (because you can't apply throttle inbetween gear changes)
How do you get that HUD on the day op left that lists includes people’s licenses? It’s helpful to know who you are dealing with.
Try RacelabApp. It's currently free and works great.
When you say you need to get max time on track in practice, quali and race, is that only in official races or do the practice sessions count too?
It's just when the race 'session' starts. The 3 min practice, qual and race 👍
@@davecamm Spot on thanks mate, i'll give it a crack today. I also learnt that i didn't need to win from this vid, will 100% focus on consistant smooth driving.
Just wondering what addon youre using for the leaderboard in the top left.
The one in this video is made by SDK Gaming 👍
