  • Please enjoy the following side by side scenes of three different versions of TOTS: 1992, The Haunting of Helen Walker (1995), and 1999. I did not include other versions I have because the film either didn't contain this scene or had the scene but nothing similar to the dialogue or situation.
Thoughts on The Haunting of Helen Walker
This version of the story is probably one of my favorites simply because it is the very first time I became acquainted with the story...before recognizing it on Dark Shadows of course.
The cast is good, although I do not think Valerie Bertinelli is the best governess I've ever seen. It's really the governess that has to carry the whole production/film and if the governess is weak...the rest of the production will be as well. The children are especially of creepy and then of course there is the excellent casting of Diana Riggs.
All in all, a good adaptation although it abandons the ambiguity that I love so much. Most of these adaptations do so I can't entirely fault it there. Hollywood loves to take the "ghosts are real" approach which is why I think The Innocents and the 1999 Masterpiece Theatre version are the best in capturing the story.
