Absolutely!I was lucky enough to see them on tour together in 2008 and was very impressed with them both.Country is not a genre I'm familiar with but Alison has an amazing voice. They put their own unique stamp on some old Led Zeppelin numbers too.
It is not that it hasn’t lost anything, it is that his voice matured and got better. Good thing too, because if he still was still way down there at the quality he was at in LZ, Allison would not have stopped to that level.
That vocal harmony is gorgeous! On the one hand there’s Plant, a very powerful voice, maybe best known for his power, singing so mellow, and still with feeling. And on the other, Kraus, a star in her own right (maybe even a legend), singing so gently that you just about can’t pick her voice out...it just blends sublimely!
I'm not much of a rock fan so I never listened to Led Zeppelin and barely knew who Robert Plant is until I got the album of him and Alison Krauss but now I'm a fan of his. 👍
Yes his voice has matured nicely since his LZ days. It’s a good thing too. If his voice has not gotten better, and was still stuck at that LZ quality, Allison would have had nothing to do with him.
Fil, I so enjoy listening to all the backgrounds and details that you research. Thank you for all your time and hard work, which I know you enjoy😊 You are my favorite to watch🤗 Blessings to you always, Pam
We saw Plant and Krauss with this band in 2008, third row in a smaller venue on Alison's side. Never will forget it, their tasty renditions and the way they sang off each other and with each other was so very cool. What I felt about Plant that night was how focused vocally he was, and had a very humble demeanor, praising the band, praising Alison, totally laying back and folding into the singing. It was so great to feel him so into each song, very intentional and just being a part of the band (as if he really could ever do that!).
Their sound has an almost haunting sound. Sparse and lots of atmosphere. I bought this album in 2008 during a strange time in my life. It's hard to listen to them without that strange. feeling and remembering that time. However, dynamic and flawless they are together. Great review!!!
Hey Fil, I believe either Robert wrote or said in an interview how much he learned from Allison. She would tell him, Robert you have to sing the song the same way each time to blend and stay in the timing. She schooled him he said. Funny, I thought😊👍
@@pamela1144 I heard Robert say in interview that singing with another was new to him. He learned from her he admitted. Fans have a different view of an artist than who they really are. I bet he had no problem. Cheers fellow fans. He didn't crawl back to Led Zeppelin. Doesn't want to be a jukebox. Ever curious musically is R.Plant.
Top level analysis, Fil, as usual. Has Alison Krauss ever sung a wrong note or played a wrong note on the fiddle. If so, I haven't heard it. Keep up the top quality of your videos in 2020.
In the fall of 1983, I saw Robert Plant in concert. At the time, he was promoting his first solo album. I guess you could say that I've always been a lukewarm Zeppelin fan, but I became a diehard fan of Plant's. He was absolutely AMAZING and still is, in my humble opinion. Truly, one of the greatest voices of rock.
Two incredibly talented souls here. Alison has a beautiful bell like quality to her voice that I adore and what can you say about Robert Plant that hasn't been said? He amazes me every time he opens his mouth because that fantastic voice is just as great as it was back in the day. He is timeless. Their collaborations are the stuff of Legend!! I think their cover of "The Price of Love" is phenomenal. Thank you Fil... so much to love right here.
I was so surprised when I learned of their collaboration, but by Joe, it was beautiful. Love this collaboration. My favorite is Killing the Blues. I always enjoy your reaction and information you give.
Met Alison at the Station Inn (my favorite club) in Nashville, TN, Robert, too. She has the most natural personality and sweetest singing voice. T-Bone Burnett is a real deal producer, he even remodeled a facsimile of the original Sun Studio, he’s on the acoustic guitar here. Love the Raising Sand CD, that old school sound appeals to me.
During the mid- seventies...my usual hangout was a C&W club called The Palomino. T-Bone Burnett played on their weekly jam nights. He wasn't well known (yet) ... but everybody called him 'Tommy' and we recognized the potential in his talent. BTW ... a very sweet and down to earth guy ❤️
There you go. I saw him on guitar and thought he probably produced the album, thank you for the confirmation. I love what he did with The new basement tapes too
Alison is so classy. I love her music. She was performing with Willie Nelson again in 2018. Whenever she's on the playlist anywhere I stop and listen. Thanks Fil.
This is really beautiful,I’ve never heard it before. Ahhhh , it’s soothing to the soul, but deep . Almost like reading private thoughts. So unique and really different . You’ve got an amazing ear Fil . Digesting this ,felt intimate, almost private. Very Deep. ❤️🤘
This is so stripped down it is almost naked. The heartbeat and the soul is totally exposed. This duo was so unexpected and so necessary. No wonder they were so critically acclaimed. Thanks Fil
Seated behind Robert Plant is producer, musical director and outstanding musician T-Bone Burnette. He deserves an analysis of his own. He produced the Grammy winning Plant and Krauss album as well as the 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou' soundtrack.
I remember hearing that Robert and Alison were getting together to do an album. I couldn't imagine the pairing ..But was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked! Then again, two pros able to adapt to any style..enough to make this man smile! Excellent music arrangement and vocal magic between the two. Well done! Thanks Fil for another stellar analysis! 😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
In my top ten albums of all time. I have liked both of these artists and was confused when I heard they were collaborating for an album. I was very shocked when I saw the song Please Read The Letter. The song was from a collaborative album with Plant and Page. I was blown away by the differences in the delivery. I love Plant and Page but the version with Krauss blew it away. I'm so glad you analyzed this performance. Thank you for this surprise!
Phil I grew up in the 70s and I can say without a doubt that you have the look and the musical ability that you would’ve fit in just perfectly in the 70s🎸🎤
They’ve continued to do SO well together, and, as you’ve displayed to us in detail, Phil, that lady is an immaculately accurate pinpointed of notes, which made Robert’s decision to work with her ( still ) deeply admirable. She’s a bluegrass maestro, as we all know, a master of a genre that tolerates virtually no gaffes whatsoever. I do feel sorry, though, for Jimmy Page. Plant continues to express next to no real affinity with own past, let alone seriously consider anything approaching a reunion.
Great job spotlighting this. I saw this from the 4th row. Even caught a pick from T-Bone. The show was even greater than you'd imagine. Lots of Zeppelin and Union Station tunes. Unbelievable harmonies all around.
One of the people who commented on 'The Lucky One' analysis video you did said he was, "more surprised by this pairing than the falling of the Berlin Wall"! It's not what you would expect, but wow, does it ever work! Silky smooth version of this song, just beautiful. Truly interesting to learn what makes this all work so well. Such a LOT of history for an artist who started so young and has been so phenomenally successful, but you did it and with style! Thanks!!
Wonderful analysis, as always! Alison also had a great album before Raising Sand, 100 Miles or More. Some of her best collaborations are on it (like Whisky Lullaby as well as one with John Waite and one with James Taylor, if I remember correctly) and some famous movie tracks she did like Baby of Mine from Dumbo and some songs from Cold Mountain. Many sad but beautiful songs. She has said that she prefers the sad songs. The arrangements and production are incredibly beautiful, and I highly recommend that album to any AK fan.
One of the best concerts seeing them on their Raising Sand tour. Buddy Guy in Marc Ribot's place on guitars. Tall T Bone Burnett strumming rhythm like a metronome. And the absolute magic of Robert and Allison. They let us up front for the encore, a serpentine, haunting "When the Levee Breaks."
What a great collaboration this was! Totally unexpected by me as a fan of both for years. Yet it worked wonderfully. On the Album every song is unique and different from the others. A lot of risks involved in this unlikely duet and the choice of music they performed. It was flawless. Thanks, Fil, for adding depth to it in your perceptive analysis.
Loved Raising Sand when it came out. I know those who originally heard of the Robert Plant and Allison Krauss pairing were dubious. I never was. Robert is a seeker of musical knowledge, and Allison is a treasure in that she has an amazing ability to learn and adapt quickly. She’s one of our National Treasures as is RP for the UK. Another shout out for this arrangement...this album in general...is for T-Bone Burnett, an amazing visionary and musician in his own right. He can tell a tale without ever opening his mouth. Thanks for doing this vid, Fil. Such great insight. Happy New Year!
Thank you for this one Fil. It's a nice detailed look at the way two apparently really different voices and styles can come together to make vocal magic. And as often is the case, I really enjoy your artist background information. All the best for 2020.💜👍
Wow! This is one of my favorite all-time songs!🥰. I think Robert Plant’s voice on this entire album is truly an instrument and he used it like he never had before. Allison is just beautiful and totally talented in so many ways. Her voice is angelic. I didn’t realize how decorated with awards Allison is, but not surprised as she is a true talent and hard worker! You gave us so much more than the obvious...as always! Happy New Year!
Thank God T-Bone brought them together. They are such a magical combo. I could say she was blessed to sing with Robert Plant but she is a star in her own right. They were blessed by each other as well as those of us who are blessed to hear them!
Fil, thank you so much for giving us the background of Allison. I have heard bits & pieces of her fantastically successful ( all very much deserved and earned..!! ) earlier years and accomplishments, but I thoroughly enjoyed hearing you put it all together. She has such a dictionary definition of a "unique" voice; absolutely one-of-a-kind. I always love to hear her sing, and even though I am 68 years "young", I also always love to watch her sing; her looks are as unique as her voice. Thanks, Fil..!!
T Bone was very clever to bring these two amazing and completely different talents together. BTW This song was on an album called Walking Into Clarksdale... I think🙂
My teen crush..Robert Plant…when this song came out, I was driving to work..in my 50s and heard his voice…thought I also recognized Alison Kraus as well! DJ comes on and shares the singers….I was blown away! His voice and her melodic sound work well together..i was YouTubing them when I got home that day…also found another favorite singer of mine and Alison Kraus do a Johnny(June Carter wrote it) Cash number “If I were a Carpernter” Dwight Yoakam and Alison Kraus..it’s beautiful as well..
My favorite moment in this? That naturally spontaneous smile of hers at 9:09 that she favors him with...ahhh to have a beautiful, talented woman smile at you in that way.
"Raising Sand" won a total of six Grammys, one for a single in 2007, but because of the timing of the release of the album, it was nominated and won the other five for 2008 at the Feb. 2009 show, beating, among others, Coldplay for Album of the Year. The clip of that presentation is also on YT. That brought Alison's total to 26, and she won her 27th Grammy in 2012 for the "Paper Airplane" album. She is 27 wins for 42 nominations lifetime. In baseball terms, batting over .600.
"So, everything rolled into one is Alison..." I couldn't agree more. I first saw her on the TV show "Austin City Limits" when she was, I believe, 19, and I've been a fan ever since. She always does JUST what's right for the song with impeccable musicality. BTW, though she's known for that crystal clear, delicate vocal sound, she can really belt it out if the occasion calls for it. Check the video of her singing "These Dreams" with Heart.
Wow, this moved me. After the analysis I went and listened to the Page/Plant version and the studio Plant/Krauss version. Loved Page's guitar in his version. Loved how Plant showed this side of his singing voice. I felt that both Allison and Robert Plant were letting each other come into their performing worlds, just a bit but enough. It was a great feeling. I do not mind at all how Fil explains these performances do not happen by accident. Some of the magic is lost by knowing a bit about how it is done but that is OK. Thanks Fil.
Hi Fil! You can’t do any better than these two! I always thought Alison had the voice of an angel! They blend so well together! Thanks for this awesome video... it was just amazing! The weekend is almost here...enjoy it!
The beauty of this song is of its simplicity....the emphasis at the start is the sound of the first beat of each chord change...however, it's the "less is more" principle that is fundamental to its beauty...not a single note is wasted.... and this includes the two solos midway and at the end of the song .....the two voices meld together superbly and you can feel the chemistry between Plant and Krauss....that was highlighted in their many interviews for "Raising Sand"....I'd like to see them both do a follow - up ...once again, a nice, top notch analysis and appraisal Fil...!
Again another great analysis Fil. It's exciting to see who you are looking at every day . I wish a lot of things & one is that you would write & sing more songs.👏😍😘🤗😊💕
Allison is always placing herself secondary to her co singer. I feel this is just her humility and respect for all others. She has an angelic voice and no angel would outshine another on purpose.
Robert Plant is Robert Plant. He can't help it. Every note by Alison, whether sung or played is totally, utterly, completely in service of the song. A consummate professional. This doesn't work on paper, like David Bowie and Bing Crosby but, like them, it astounds in practice.
Love the blending of these two voices in this song. It still really blows my mind that your last analysis video was my first exposure to Alison Krauss! Thanks for getting more into her background, Fil. Makes me wonder even more how I overlooked her!
She guested on Hope and Glory a Wilson sister’s acoustic collaboration album. Her voice is amazing and of course if you have perfect pitch you will make a great violin player. 🤷🏼♀️
Thanks for this, Fil. I love them both. I was able to see Robert with his band, The Sensational Space Shifters, two years ago. I hope you can do an analysis video of something the SSS did. They were amazing.
Another Legend! One of the great voices of rock and even today in concert he still sounds awesome! I'm a huge Zeppelin fan but I really never listened to his stuff with Alison but this was really beautiful. 🤘
Hey Fil, I saw Zepplin back in the day...man that was a concert but it’s good to see ROBERT still injecting his talent into the world. Man playing with him would be an unbelievable journey...I can’t believe we are getting so old. I’m 65 and I’ve seen so much and heard so much...what a world ride it’s been. I. Lucky to have been born when I was and what a place in heaven waits me...full of musicians...I’m gonna play lead guitar and sing with them all.Happy New Year Fil....

This performance is lovely. Robert Plant has that rare voice that hasn't lost it's excellence over the years ❤️
@Big Bill O'Reilly I think this performance is pretty good for an old "has been"... ua-cam.com/video/PD-MdiUm1_Y/v-deo.html
I think his voice is richer....or maybe it's the change in songs/genre.
I think his voice is actually more interesting and better.
@@nanfrostsfashionfocusstyle6250- Completely agree.
It is not that it hasn’t lost anything, it is that his voice matured and got better. Good thing too, because if he still was still way down there at the quality he was at in LZ, Allison would not have stopped to that level.
The two of them are absolutely awesome Allison is a phenomenal musician and Plant well you know doesn't get much better.

LOVE IT...THANKS FIL AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Great performance! Thanks Fil.
Great choice here, Fil. Raising Sand is Pure Gold. I would love to see them tour together.
Thanks for sharing this. I had no idea these worked together. Amazing.
I love them together! Streaming music and you and UA-cam keep providing new wonderful musicians I am be really enjoying! ❤️
They do Gone, Gone, Gone with so much joy.
Again another great analysis Fil. It's exciting to see who you are looking at every day . I wish a lot of things & one is that you would write & sing more songs.👏😍😘🤗😊💕
They were magic!, I saw them live at Bonnaroo in 2009. Just fabulous!!!
Allison is always placing herself secondary to her co singer. I feel this is just her humility and respect for all others. She has an angelic voice and no angel would outshine another on purpose.
There's T. Bone Burnett on guitar. Didn't he produce the album? Everything Alison Krauss sings and plays turns into gold ;) TY Fil
Yeah he did!
What a happy coincidence. Been listening and re-listening to Raising Sand over the last couple of days. Great, great album.
Robert Plant is Robert Plant. He can't help it. Every note by Alison, whether sung or played is totally, utterly, completely in service of the song. A consummate professional. This doesn't work on paper, like David Bowie and Bing Crosby but, like them, it astounds in practice.
Thank you Wingman for taking my suggestion re Alison and Robert. learned alot. Wouldn't mind another by them
I had suggested them as well, for Gone Gone Gone (live).. a really lively performance !
@@katiezee2 I agree. That is a great song.
Love the blending of these two voices in this song. It still really blows my mind that your last analysis video was my first exposure to Alison Krauss! Thanks for getting more into her background, Fil. Makes me wonder even more how I overlooked her!
Me too. Fil has opened up many new paths for our musical appreciation.
Roberts always had a very soulful voice, even back in his teens and his air raid siren days!
Great rundown Fil,as a fan of music in general I’m also a big fan of Musical Theatre so I appreciate your analysis of the vocals.....ROCK
Another Legend! One of the great voices of rock and even today in concert he still sounds awesome! I'm a huge Zeppelin fan but I really never listened to his stuff with Alison but this was really beautiful. 🤘
Hauntingly beautiful. Love both performers - the resulting synergy is boundless!
Happy New Year!
I like your review of an artist because you give the background and history, Many people would not know how talented Allison is.
I saw them at the Greek Theater in Los Angels. They were absolutely fantastic and this is my favorite song on the album.
excellent duet! Great lead vocal, sublime harmony. Quite a performance.
