Cosmos Sugar Flower Tutorial (Gumpaste / Flower Paste)

- In this video I show you how to make a delicate cosmos sugar flower out of gumpaste / flower paste. I love cosmos for their paper thin and translucent petals and so the key to this tutorial is making sure you roll out your paste super thin. I also show you how to make a realistic calyx and leaves using wire and floral tape. There are many different colour variations for cosmos so once you have mastered the basic shape, you can have a play with different colour combinations.

What a lovely comment to receive, thank you! I love spreading my love of sugar flowers with others. Thanks for watching
Absolutely beautiful! I love your teaching style and have learned so much! I have been making gum paste flowers for about 2 years now. I love to learn new techniques❤️ My stepdaughter is graduating next month. The cake I made is sitting in the freezer…layered, filled, crumb coated and wrapped super tight. I am planning to decorate it with a beautiful flower arrangement, cascading down the side in a crescent shape. This is the perfect flower to work into my design! Thank you again!
Oh brilliant! It is great one to add some height and texture to an arrangement. So glad you are enjoying my tutorials. Please do share your finished flowers with me as I’d love to see them and the cake too! 💚

Great tutorial, thx for sharing Clare. If one does not have a cosmos veiner can one use a peony veiner perhaps or what would you suggest?
So glad you like it ☺️ if you don’t have a cosmos veiner, I would probably suggest just using the wide end of the Dresden tool and pressing it along the length of each petal to give the same textured effect
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for this amazing tutorial! What is the size for your cosmos cutter (length & width). I don't have one. I will try to fine something similar. Please advise
You’re welcome Alena! I have put all of the details of the tools that I use in the tutorial in a blog post here thebotanicalcakestudio.com/cosmos-sugar-flower-tutorial/

Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed the tutorial :)
Complete novice here - what do you dab on the fondant before you roll it and before you thin the petal out? Thanks
Hi Shelly, I dust with a little cornflour/cornstarch to prevent the flower paste from sticking to the rolling pin/ball tool. If you want to make sugar flowers, I highly recommend that you buy (or make) a specific flower paste rather than fondant. Fondant does not act the same as flower paste and can not be worked to create delicate flowers. Hope that’s helpful! 💚
Are you using white cotton covered 30g floral wire? My wire seems to be showing through the sugar paste.
Hi Venus. It’s a white 30gauge wire by Hamilworth. They are the best brand in my opinion. The white paper stays attached to the wire much better than other brands.
Thank you
You're welcome Helene
Could I use a peony cutter for this?
Hi! Sorry for the delayed reply. If you have a small sized peony cutter, I would have thought that would work fine :)
@@TheBotanicalCakeStudio Thank you so much
@@missleahhbabes You're welcome! Depending on the size of the cutter, you may just make a slightly larger flower :)
Beautiful video but you can be very hard to hear.
I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the video. I'm not sure why you find it hard to hear though...perhaps it is your device? The sound is very loud and clear on my laptop and phone as I use a high quality microphone for my recordings.
