- This concert is recorded LIVE for a full Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on July 23rd 2016.
Listening to the Canto is a deep and profound experience that is hard to explain in words.
The 'average' listener needs about 15-25 minutes to sink into the music and its healing qualities. It is recommended to listen to the first 15-25 minutes of the Canto and from there on feel the flow of the composition. Feel free to lie down, meditate, rest, contemplate etc.

Canto Ostinato originated between 1973 and 1976 when the composer Simeon ten Holt (1923) returned to the instrument for which he had once started composing. Instead of a fixed composition, Ten Holt wrote a "free" form that resembles that of minimalist Terry Riley. The work 'in C' of Riley, just like Canto Ostinato, consists of a number of measures that the performers can repeat at their own discretion. Unlike most minimalists, who often emphasize the rhythmic aspect, Ten Holt seeks much more towards melody and sound. The repetitions create a meditative tension and/or relaxation caused mainly by the harmonic and melodic structures in the Canto Ostinato. The musicians can choose to stretch these moments throughout the entire piece and therefor create a unique experience with every performance.
Mallet Collective Amsterdam performed this work in several formations in multiple countries worldwide. Even though many Dutch musicians perform this composition the version with mallet instruments together with the very gifted pianist Ivo Janssen may be seen as one of the most unique and mesmerizing formations of this magnificent work.
One single piano is the most minimal line up that Ten Holt had in mind. Two vibraphones and two marimba's give a different, more vibrant and richer color to the Canto. A composition that lives and moves more than any other work. The Canto has the rare quality that very diverse people experience the work as 'theirs'. And sometimes even as life changing, as demonstrated by Ramón Gieling's acclaimed documentary.
