If they had just left the gas cans the way they were, we wouldn't have to jump through all these hoops trying to fix the terrible new ones. Nice solution, might try this someday. I'm fortunate to still have a good working gas can from the early 00s.
Guy in EPA, "I want to change gas can spouts. We should all by stock in the companies that are going to make the new spouts. Then we say it's for saftey."
The worst gas cans are the ones which do not have an air vent at the back. They instead use an inner hose which sucks the displaced fuel vapor as you fill. The first thing I do to these is drill a hole & screw in a 1/4_20 bolt! The EPA has a lot to answer for!
I install a metal (brass or chrome) truck tire valve on the flat spot on the upper handle. Remove the valve core (schrader valve) use a metal valve cap. I can empty an entire 5 gallon gas can in about a minute instead of 5 minutes. If I’m filling a small tank you can leave the cap on and control the flow. I like these valves much better because they don’t accidentally flip open.
You could probably sit on the curb at Walmart or some auto parts place and sell those things all day long. Make up a bunch (like a few hundred) and sell them individually, 3 pack, 5 pack or 10 pack. Fill up the back of your truck. While you're at it, build a good solid cash box to slip the money in...something welded to your truck, locked and just a slot in the lid...lol...but serious. You might want a buddy standing by packing a surprise in his waist band. Thanks for the terrific demonstration and camera work. Jesus bless.
Have been using the EZ pours for several years with no problems. Also tried taking one if those horrid spouts apart and slipped a plastic hose over the stub. Got lucky and the hose fit very tight so no clamp was required. Yours looks guaranteed not to leak.
Kept old can top. Sacrificed a lid off Chinese food container for inner "gasket". Now have travel lids for all cans and one of your adapter conversions. Thank you!
So every time you go to the gas station to put gas in the container you're going to have to take off the rubber housing over the hole in the can. But that's still better than dealing with those crappy spouts that break all the time.
I’ve chosen to fill my vehicles’ tanks with a modified elongated funnel and pour the gas in without any spout on the can. The spout is used just as a gas cap during storage and is removed before pouring. The elongated funnel sticks out of the gas tank at a roughly 45 degree angle a parabolic section has been cut out on on side that faces skyward enabling easy pouring of the gas into the tank. When filling a lawnmower a regular funnel works best.
Me too. I gave up on trying to pull back the spout, pick up and pour from a 5 gallon container. Older lady. Just horrible to do...and irritating that the cap leaks at the jug connection. Sure, I could only put a gallon or two in the jug at a time... Thanks for all the helpful comments. Jesus bless.
@@sandrarichardson2713 Kudos to you for lifting a five gallon jug (unless you only have it half-filled)! I gave up on my five gallon jugs and only use one and two gallon containers. I’m an older guy and decided that I didn’t need to exercise my arm muscles so much-LOL.
@Jim Policke I bought old-style nozzles & put in vents - so very nice to have cans that WORK without having to mess around with spills & special levers! WIng nuts sound good for my old hands! Thx
Dip hose end in reeeeeeallly hooooot waters to soften when you push it on. I did something similar with a garden watering can and my wifes CPAP hose to I could get the water in the bottles I bury next to the tomatoes.
The government wrote guide lines to help the environment, but left the manufacturers make their own spout design with minimum R&D. Place the blame where it belongs.
I’ve spilled gas all over myself for the last time! I’m so done with these crappy gas cans! And they charge a fortune for them. This is my project tomorrow.
I was trying to fill my truck this morning and the gas nozzle on my 5 gallon can kept leaking. I gave up and was starting to look for a replacement nozzle. Thank you
The best screwdriver I use for hose clamps are the cheap harbor freight ones that have a large straight and phillips side and a small side. The large side if you take the bit out is 5/16 which is what the head usually is on the clamp or use the screwdriver bit.
White tefflon tape is not made for gas. There is a yellow one for that. So now you need a nut driver with you each time you go fill the gas can?? That's convenient! Where did you get those snips? Find them along side of the road!??
For those blaming the government. The government wrote guide lines to help the environment, but left the manufacturers make their own spout design with minimum R&D. Place the blame where it belongs.
I think this great for a Woman to make a new Spout for a Gas Can Container. I went to Lowes to get these supplies, the man who was helping me did not do to good for me so I have to return most of what I bought, over $ 40 worth of parts. I went back on & now I know what everything look like so I will get the right Equipment.
@@downwitakrowdy Where do you find good ones? Ive bought several and they are either very hard to find, break, or the rubber seal just deforms and becomes useless. any advice?
I need a 3 foot hose to add onto existing EPA nozzle. 5 gal gas can is too heavy to hold up to fill a pickup truck.... I want clear tubing. I can set the can on the side of the truck bed, run the hose into the filler neck, and let gravity do it's thing.
Wow, that's about $125 worth of goodies on your bench. I went a quicker and cheaper route. For $74, I got two VPracing 5.5gal motorcycle gas cans with separate capped vent, vinyl spouts, and 45 degree benders. They're heavy duty and work great, with zero obstructions in the hose. They're FAST, too, and spill nary a drop.
I kust use a funnel into my machine's gas tank. To pour all I do is remove the "engineered" spout completely. Aside from the schrader valve I don't understand the nessesity of all the backyard engineering.
I guess this is fun cobbling... However the EZ Pour retro fit kit is $9 at most local hardware stores or online. Fits almost every new plastic can...comes with extra parts, a flexible plastic pour hose, cap and a can vent. Makes your can just like 1990 cans.
tried this with exact parts listed...still leaks badly no matter how much you tighten it down...none of my gas cans (4) have threads on the spout that go all the way around. There are a couple of flat spots with no threads and this is exactly where it leaks. It was a good effort, but needs more work, unfortunately
After all that it is probably easier to go to Harbor Freight or an Army Surplus and by the old school metal cans with Metal Flex hose … plastic breaks to easy …
Someone else just mentioned unscrew it at the gray connector and white connector...like you would unscrew the gas cap anyway. That would work. Jesus bless.
why too bulky and a waist. you showed three or more good gas spouts and your can is already vented so what’s the problem ? the only bad spouts are those rigid ones that you have too push to operate.

That’s the government for you, always fixing things that aren’t broken 😂
It comes down to choices damaging to environment: nuclear weapons testing or gas can fumes. One has to go.
Blame the EPA for excessive regulations
Congratulations you are the proud owner of a 50 dollar gas can.

How do you fill it each time ?
Great video. Better than all the crappy spouts being sold on Amazon. You earned yourself a new subscriber.

No! That's what the plumbing connectors will do. Look at the grey and the white that screw into each other. Unscrew those and voila you are there.

Best solution I've seen on here so far. Thanks for sharing!
Clever solution. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week 😎
Nice work Ryan. I have those EASY CANS sold at Walmart and they have a large hole. Not sure I can make one of these to fit. Thanks
Thank you! the only issue is getting out the tools to do a refill & recap? Probably anything better than those {insert expletive here} safety nozzles!

does the gas eat away at the rubber parts and hose?
It would last longer than the crap they sell
Yeah, but like said it will still last longer than the garbage that comes with the can
Most likely.. but still better than the Garbage they come with.. 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Get a hose clamp that has the twist knob so you don’t have to carry a screwdriver with you. Also use a torch to warm the hose to slide it on better
Use the hair dryer, works a bunch better and doesn't set the hose on fire.
How do you fill it? Need to carry a wrench with you to loosen the clamp?
Dip hose end in reeeeeeallly hooooot waters to soften when you push it on. I did something similar with a garden watering can and my wifes CPAP hose to I could get the water in the bottles I bury next to the tomatoes.
At the gas can manufacturer...I'm from the Government and I'm here to help
The government wrote guide lines to help the environment, but left the manufacturers make their own spout design with minimum R&D. Place the blame where it belongs.
I'm wondering if the parts like the rubber coupling that you used are fuel compliant. Gas will soften the rubber and may get in the fuel system.
Makes no difference in carb. motors
I’ve spilled gas all over myself for the last time! I’m so done with these crappy gas cans! And they charge a fortune for them. This is my project tomorrow.
I’m not convinced that you cap will stay on( I don’t have any solution for that).
Besides that I like your design. Much better than what’s available.
Three things are certain in life: Death, Taxes, and Gas cans spilling.
You forgot the government meddling and screwing perfectly good things up to the pont of uselessness!
I was trying to fill my truck this morning and the gas nozzle on my 5 gallon can kept leaking. I gave up and was starting to look for a replacement nozzle. Thank you
Excellent, I’ll have to try this, thanks!
Nice video! Good build. I use a pvc cutter for hoses like that. Very smooth and no burrs ever. New subscriber here
GREAT! GREAT!! Thanks! On my way to Home Depot NOW!! 🏃💨💨
Love it thank you. Will definitely be doing this to a few 5 gals.
Thanks for posting!! This will make life way easier and cleaner going forward.
Like and a subscribe from this guy!
what kind of screwdriver did you use to loosen and tighten the hose clamps. Great video.
The best screwdriver I use for hose clamps are the cheap harbor freight ones that have a large straight and phillips side and a small side. The large side if you take the bit out is 5/16 which is what the head usually is on the clamp or use the screwdriver bit.
You can get an aftermarket conversion kit that restores normal operation like on the standard gas cans that we all had at one time.
Ingenious!
White tefflon tape is not made for gas. There is a yellow one for that. So now you need a nut driver with you each time you go fill the gas can?? That's convenient! Where did you get those snips? Find them along side of the road!??
My thought exactly; maybe a great way to get gas out of the can, a horrible way to get gas into the can. But, kudos to the guy for trying!!
How does this not leak along the threads of the spout?
Thank you! Great solution
I wanted to see you pour gas out that can to see if it leaks!!
For those blaming the government. The government wrote guide lines to help the environment, but left the manufacturers make their own spout design with minimum R&D. Place the blame where it belongs.
using a heat gun to heat the hoses a little will make them go on better.
BRILLIANT!!! 😃

Going to Lowes was your1st mistake. Lowes only hires rejects from HD.You were lucky to find someone to help you.
I doubt that rubber sleeve will stand up to gasoline in the long run. It's meant for water. But I could be wrong! Time will tell.
I can see where this spout would pour faster but would be worthless when it comes time to fill it up.
Then take it off at home and buy solid caps for gas station run.

People try and reinvent their old wheel and spend so much more than just buying a tire from someone else.
$125 for a rubber boot, a bit of hose and a few fittings? What are you buying solid gold fittings and kevlar lined tubing??
Must say that is a top quality spout. Kind of inconvenient to fill, but most of all EXPENSIVE. I'll bet you have 15 to $20 in parts there.
You have to carry a nut driver with you to fill the can?
You can, but I have found the entire rubber contraption screws off and on - it works but not as easy as a regular screw on spout.
That’s so awesome✨ thank you 🤠
Thank you works great 😊.
Gasoila thread seal should be used it is made for fuel and chemicals

If that can falls over the cap on hose will come right off I bet. Spills out and garage burns down.
Once you cut a 15in long 13in piece of tubing.

I simply use a battery powered transfer pump!
Simple and effecient!
It may be a fair solution, but it's crazy expensive to make with a lot of leftover tubing, and it's not convenient for refilling at all.
Try using a siphon, you only pay for one thing and only takes one for all gas cans
After all that it is probably easier to go to Harbor Freight or an Army Surplus and by the old school metal cans with Metal Flex hose … plastic breaks to easy …
The gaskets are a pain to get out of your fuel tank
Or, you could buy a couple of Eagle metal safety cans and be done.
So if you go to the gas station without a screw or nut driver you will come back with an empty can.
What were you thinking?
Someone else just mentioned unscrew it at the gray connector and white connector...like you would unscrew the gas cap anyway. That would work. Jesus bless.
looks like a pain in the ass to fill at the gas station
Wish I had watched this before I bought a can that is leaking all over the place.
Or just own a couple eagle metal gas cans and a $2 funnel. Or buy a vp racing can and be done with it.
"and you're done" Except now you need a tool to remove the spout every time you want to fill the can.
nice. but too bulky for my 2 gal

For 35 bucks you can modify your twenty five buck gas can.
Great idea, but buy a tripod for the camera. You made me nauseous, so I didn’t watch the whole video.
Watching this makes me dizzy, your moving the camera all over too fast.

lot of crying going on here...
You spent a lot of money doing this retrofit when you could've probably bought yourself a Eagle or Just Rite metal can and been done with it.
