- This is a quick feature overview of the new Erica Synths Black Modulator. Playback available in 4K/2160p.
Erica Synths Black Modulator is a fully analogue modulation and noise source. It consists of an LFO/audio frequency oscillator with three simultaneous waveform outputs, a Zener diode-based noise generator with three noise flavors and a clockable S&H circuit.
Features:
LFO with sine, triangle and pulse outputs
LFO/Audio range switch
Zener diode-based noise generator for massive, full spectrum white noise
Pink noise filter
Noise crush knob and crushed noise output - fade from 1 bit noise to individual random trigger bursts
Clockable sample and hold circuit.
S&H circuit based on a rare, high quality S&H chip S&H CV and clock inputs
Technical Specifications:
LFO frequency............................ 0.2Hz - 25Hz
Audio rate frequency ................18Hz - 750Hz
LFO output level................................-5V - +5V
Noise output level ..................................10Vptp
S&H CV input level ......................up to 20Vptp
Power consumption ...............+34mA, -28mA
Module width ............................................10HP
Module depth ........................................ 25mm
Hi there. Thanks for the thorough video demo of the Black Modulator. My only concern is the "shaky" sound of the oscillator. For example, at around 0:50, when the triangle wave is introduced, you can definitely hear it. I noticed that you have a connection from what looks like a sequencer (module on the far left). Is the CV (for assumed "pitch") from this sequencer a bit noisy (enough to cause the unintended sounding FM, albeit slight)? Or is it the Black Modulator itself? Or perhaps a poor cable, or connection of the cable? Just curious before I purchase one of these. Thank you!
Hi Eric, you're welcome. The "shaky" sound that you are hearing is possibly because the frequency rate of the Modulator is set fully clockwise. In a higher frequency it could be self-oscillating. Another possibility is a bit of aliasing, which is common with LFO's in audio rate. I will try listening to it again with a clean signal path, make some adjustments to the frequency rate and let you know if the waveforms in audio rate are still shaky sounding.
Distortion Productions Thank you for the reply! That makes sense to me.
Did you ever check back on this issue? I'm thinking of picking one of these up, but that shaky sound is indeed a bit off-putting.
Thanks for the video. Sorry because i'm a newbie. Please Distortion Productions, can you share these patch connections, if possible?
Just the first setting from 0:30 to 2:08 about the Black Modulator only...
Also, at 4:11 does it the Modulator S&H output connected to the Wavetable VCO Wave CV input?
Thanks in advance.

I've got one new from Erica and in audio mode it doesn't go as high as it shows in the video...
Hi, what are you using as your modulation destination or oscilloscope? I had the Mordax Data set to visually show the maximum range for demonstration purposes.
@@distprod my ear... I played the device while watching the video and it just doesn't go as high. It goes through my speakers, after the Black Quad VCA that's it. Maybe I have a weird device, I don't know.
