  • I finally get to shoot the Gillo GTL88 limbs and give my subscribers feedback on what they feel like. I also tease my attempt at tuning a barebow.... which was an epic fail.

    Great video.
It’s good to see even an Olympic class archer has issues tuning! 😉
Looking forward to the next one.

Hello Jake. When shooting bare-shaft with barebow please try adding tape to the back of the arrow to represent the weight of the fletch. Make sure it balances at the same point along the shaft as the fletched arrows. You may be surprised at the result. Just try it as an experiment. For me doing this meant that all of a sudden I can now put bare-shaft in a group with fletched up to 30M but beyond that the drag of the fletched drops them down. Before always bare-shaft lands left indicating weak arrow, I am left handed. I shoot 520 spine arrows with 2 inch plastic vanes, 30 inch arrow length, 29.5 inch draw length, 37 pound on the fingers, arrows through chrono at 183 feet per sec so not super fast. Point on 45M. KG NEXGEN limbs 70 inch bow. I shoot NFAS field archery in the UK so not many targets beyond 50M. Sorry for the mixture of Meters and Feet that is a kind of British thing!

It is like learning archery once more. Had the same issues when I moved through historic/traditional/olympic/barebow/compound :P. It is the same sport, but vastly different ...

I was getting the same NP reading on my 62” ILF hunting bow, now my NP is between 1/2 & 3/4 of an inch and my arrows fly great. Using an elevated rest and no crawl, I’m a gap shooter, I found a bit of positive tiller, really made my bow quiet, and felt better on my fingers at anchor.

Raise that nocking point. Gotta do what the arrows tell ya!

Don’t be afraid to follow the indication of the bare shaft. In my experience the combination of anchor point and arrow weight can give quite a wide range of correct np positions (between a half and a full inch depending on those!). Good starting point for most is 3/4 inch and then tune according to bs at mid average competition distance (or basically 30m for outdoor target/field, 18m for indoors and 20-25 for 3D) .

Oh, and also the nocks you use matter of course. Beiter asymmetric like a higher nocking point than Easton g-nock in my experience. Quite a bit.

Nice... I like stiff punchy limbs as a personal preference so I am excited to give these a try... a little concerned at the stacking you were experiencing... I have just over a 30.5" draw so I might need to back them off a bit.

Your bow sure sounded a lot happier after you adjusted out the negative tiller.

Someday you should try shooting a Longbow off the shelf with Wooden arrows. It's very challenging and fun.

Thanks for your honest review. I`m a little bit disappointed because I hoped that limbs will be a bit soften at the end of the draw phase, as the description declares…
My pair of 70” - #42 is on the way.
    Will see…
Do you feel ‘stacking’ at 29” - 29,5” using a 72” bow (this riser, as I remember, 27”)?

    Hi Jake,
The bare shaft test you did is pretty interesting, the bare shafts were hitting high although your upper nocking point is at about 1.5cm...
I think what might happen here is that the shafts are bouncing off the rest due to the crawl...
I'm sure you are aware of the zniper barebow rest where the rest finger flipps out of the way vertically when the arrow is passing the riser?
Would be really interesting to see the very same bareshaft test with that zniper rest...
Thank you for the excellent videos and for sharing your insights with the archery community, keep it up!
    regards, Alex

One of the top Barebow archers in the country told me that limbs that are soft in the clicker zone are not as good for bare bow since you could creep and not know it without that back wall. I would say this is definitely true for low level shooters like myself that are not as connected to their body as a high level shooter

I never trust the labeled weight on limbs and check holding weights with a digital force gauge and take into consideration weights measured at max and min limb settings. I have GTL-88 limbs on a GT 25 riser, and they feel and work pretty good for me at a 28.5" holding draw length. I like that slight kinda "wall" feeling at my draw length because it proofs my Barebow draw length at release

You're filming on a 105 degree day?! That's 'nope' weather lol
Did you lose an arrow? Is it possible to find with all the foliage behind? lol

New to archery, so this might question may be a stupid one, but hey worth asking I feel...
When turning should you be at your point on distance? This way you are not adding the additional element of string walking to impact on arrow flight.

If you shoot different distances with the same bow, go to the middle one with a medium crawl so "no crawl" or "max crawl" arent completely out of tune. Its a compromise.

You should have NEGATIVE tiller, because you travel down on string. Don't be afraid to set it 1/4" for beginning and tune it for distance about 20m.
As i hear the sound, your bow has still a lot of vibrations, it means your limbs are loaded asymetrically.
