I love your candor! You play so amazing yet as you instruct, show your humanness that you can mess up. This makes this more attainable for me. Thank you!
John, thank you for your in-depth answer. I particularly like your idea about playing with mounts and dismounts around the lick. I can see how that would make the lick feel less bound. Also, thanks for validating that the self-consciousness is in my head. Even in this video, where you're obviously playing a prepared lick over and over, it still sounds awesome and free. I'm totally overthinking how the listener perceives an improvisation. 🤦♂
Great topic. I also think a helpful thing is to not copy-paste things note for note from your inspiration lick, but rather figure out the specific device that makes a given idea work (whether it be a harmonic/rhythmic/melodic concept/motif that grabs your ear) and then try to digest it into your thinking and feeling. I think the end result will be something that captures the vibe of what inspires you but is more authentically you. Just my two cents!
Hi John, Question for you , With all your experience do you know of a Guitar cable that Does Not tangle easily,, going crazy with my 10 ' very expensive cable .. thanks ..
Lovely playing as always, but I noticed that you slightly adjusted your Improvised lines to hide the Scripted one. You usually don't do THIS many straight sixteenth notes (I think they're sixteenth notes), phrasing-wise. Since the Hidden Lick was all sixteenth notes, you surrounded it with more than usual. So another way to Camouflage a lick: Hide it in a Sea of Similar Stuff. :)

I wrote myself a couple of long "The Licks" and this is GREAT , I find dropping them in on my DAW helps with counting. More ideas, thanks !

Amazing intro! Will you be throwing this one up on Patreon? Also that tone is incredible. Seems to have a little more attack to it and I dig that.

Super helpful.
Similar to 'Waves' By Guthrie Govan ?
Loved the playing... Could have sworn to have heard "The Lick" a couple of times. I can smell the rust on that G string... 😵💫
Is it the lighting - or do I see a bunch of rust on those strings??????!!!!?????
I was seeing the same in the G string.
Keeps the calluses sanded down.
Jerk. Your playing should be considered a form of cyber bullying.
