Had a chat with Kent who was asking about timing. Of course I still have work to do on this, but here's some stuff I've practiced that actually improved my timing.

When I was young, my timing was my biggest strength. 20yrs later, after many years of noodling without a band or metronome, it had gone all to 💩. That was when I started working on my timing. It is much improved, yet not as good as I remember it once being. Key point: timing can be much improved with deliberate practice.

This will sound horribly boring, but…what I found really helps is to use either a metronome or a Boss drb 90 and record myself playing without any reverb or effects; just raw and completely clean. This usually “exposes” where I’m off and there’s no latency issue contaminating things. Also, a big epiphany for me happened when I watched Al DiMeola talking about timing. At that point, I really started to comprehend just how my “grasp” of timing was horrible.

I practiced a lot with constant metronome clicks as well and got in the habit of having to lean on it. Now it's become one of my practice projects to challenge my timing and be more able to maintain time on my own. Another great tool is Gap Click, which has a nice feature that adds in off beat 16ths in certain bars, which really makes you feel the "grid".
It can be hard to work on something that seems so simple and fundamental after playing for so many years, but I think it's one of those things that will just make everything you do sound better.

I've been working on a Windows based Metronome in the last week or so.. this video is timed very well as this stuff is on my mind right now. Never thought of the randomly muting beats idea. Random stuff like this is why I love your channel. Also.. Tomo Fujita emphasizes the 1 and the 3 going way back on a DVD called "Accelerate Your Playing" and still talks about it on his YT channel to think day. The reason I mention him is because he is the one of the first I saw talk about it.. as a core part of his teaching style. There's so many different ways to approach this stuff.. and so many ways to use a metronome. This video explored some of that, it was a very good watch..

Thanks, John. As a classically trained musician, I’ve always had good time but it didn’t automatically translate outside of that genre.
I took lessons from a studio rhythm guitarist when I played in a funk band. We worked a lot with a metronome accentuating different beats. Your point about minimizing the beats is spot on. He also got me into listening to and copying Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Stevie Ray, and the two guitarists who used to play w James Brown. They were all soooo good on rhythm guitar.

Great video, and super relevant for guitar players.
The only I would add, and you touched on this, is, if you have a recording setup, you can do what Cory Wong does:
Plays and records a rhythm to a simple drum groove, and then looks at the transients relative to the grid.
Your solution is ultimately superior for an improving musician, but I find that some people starting out, or who never focused on timing, need a visual reference to see how bad the timing is, because the sound of it is not obvious to them.

Another good trick is you take 4 bars and you have click on quarter notes for three bars but then the fourth one click drops out. Then try 8 bars but it drops out for two bars. Or anything crazy you think of for a loop where the metronome drops out for some bars and returns.

I had a timing problem and suspected it was being habituated through using a DAW at the default 120 BPM, rather than at other rates. I made a drum track with a tempo map which varied gradually from 115 BPM to 125 BPM and back repeatedly, to emulate the imperfect timing of live playing. I was ok on that, so I tried other stuff until I tracked down the problem. It turned out I was rushing things in quad speed. By quad speed I mean the fastest speed you're likely to be playing. Normally you're ok at /2 and /4 of that speed, and the x4 speed depends on the actual BPM. I expected to be behind the beat, eg not making it, but I was overcompensating, tensing and completing a phrase ahead of the beat, so when moving back to /2 or /4, I was off the beat. I started looking at the x4 BPMs playing, and the dismounts to /2 and /4, so I could get it smoother. Still a work in progress, and not an uncommon problem. I hear some players rushing the quad speed, by accident or design, *but* paying more attention to the dismount into /2 or /4, to hit that dismount beat on time.

Yeah it’s like saying a guitarist using bends and vibrato is not hitting the notes accurately. Timing/feel is part of the art! Just listen to acoustic blues before drums came along and dictated the tempo.

The two biggest challenges standing between most people’s transition from “guitar player” to “competent musician who happens to play the guitar” are usually rhythm/time and ear. In my experience of learning music on the guitar over a 50 year period, it is better to place developing a strong sense of groove and ear ahead of pyrotechnic shredding/technique. FWIW, my hearing and time sense are still catching up.

I like to put the metronome at 1/2 the tempo and treat the beats as on 2 and 4 like a snare drum. Then I think of the metronome as a drummer I'm playing with rather than something I'm trying to follow. My timing problem seems to be more related to minor flubs that I try to correct in real time and they throw off the groove. I suspect that's mostly because I don't play enough hours to refine the muscle memory.

Tasteful playing on a tasty guitar. I've always tried to hear 32nd notes in my head, especially at slower tempos. That way, you can deliberately play ahead of, or behind the beat at will.
Seems as though whatever method you're currently employing is working.
    Carry on, wayward son.

There must be "something in the air" on this topic right now. On the MusicTheoryForGuitar channel last week, Tommaso posted a Q&A on rhythm training. He describes some unusual exercises to do with a DAW for helping with rhythm: ua-cam.com/video/fYzFgmspNRo/v-deo.html. Time is probably my weakest point, so I'm intrigued, but so far haven't been motivated enough to set up my DAW for it. Metronome exercises are more up my alley. -Tom

A possibly interesting tidbit from a dull man: I've learned from a researcher that people with ADHD and other such development issues of brain damage very often have issues with anything temporal - which in itself isn't surprising considering how time blindness always shows up in in all this research - and this issue also effects musical tempo and timing in a negative way which was very surprising to me, because I always thought 'feel' was more connected to bodily awareness

@Herfinnur, thanks for posting on this. A friend of mine has ADHD, and is just starting to pick up a musical instrument (pennywhistle). She's been asking me for advice. It's fascinating to hear about this, and good to know to keep an eye out for it. I searched for "adhd and time awareness musical rhythm" and several research papers come up, as well as discussions (Reddit threads, etc.). The top hit was summarized: "It is well-established that individuals with ADHD exhibit deficits in temporal estimation and timing functions, which may impact their ability to accurately produce and interact with rhythmic stimuli." The Interactive Metronome site has a page on "10 Benefits of Music for ADHD Brains" noting that music can help those with ADHD learn to keep track of time better. Fascinating stuff! -Tom

Guitarists, another reason to take care of your ears is that it can also affect your timing. Even if you “can hear” what’s going on, if you have some damage, this will impact your processing and reaction time. Playing in time is basically this - processing and reaction.

The problem is really with semantics. Europeans and brits ( although I hate to generalise, I'm about to), seem to me, and a few others, to have pretty accurate timing, but maybe where they suffer is rhythm. As I say,semantics... the american feel is definitely more back in the pocket, so to speak. If there is more of a swing from the backbeat to the front of the slope, if you will, there is more likely a "rhythmic" feel , rather than an accurate metronomic timing. The devil is in the detail here, and it is, as always a matter of taste. Real music does swell and shrink ( speed up and slow down) within the beat anyway, and that's why I could never use a drum machine or metronome, just because they sound so unnatural to me, but believe me, I've tried ,out of necessity. Some people have excellent timing, but seemingly no sense of rhythm. Good awareness of rhythm( which I make no claim to myself), is, to me, akin to a more three dimensional sense of time and space ( or should that be four?) I'll finish by saying as John fors often.." if that makes sense". This is murky territory as far as meaning goes, but that's one reason, maybe, that Jimi said something like " you have to play the spaces between the notes as well as the notes. However you achieve it, this kind of consideration will always make your music better through the many mysterious turns of an art form that is mire than engineering.
