    Hello, this is Algae.
Are there ginkgo trees in your country?
Thanks to living in Korea, I seem to have had a close relationship with the ginkgo tree since childhood.
The seeds of the ginkgo tree served as a delicious snack for the winter, and the leaves of the yellow ginkgo tree became my bookmarks.
In recent years, ginkgo trees have become more and more hated.
The cause is the smell from the fruits of the ginkgo tree.
Ginkgo trees that grow as street trees in the city are hated in autumn.
Someday, that hate will decrease, right?
The main subject of today's video is a ginkgo.
I hope you enjoy watching video and have a nice day.
    Thank you.

My great uncle was in the army in Japan in the 1960s, and he brought home a ginkgo sapling. When I was young, it was small enough to climb, but now its almost as tall as our house. So, if anyone ever asks you, "Can ginkgo tree grow in midwest U.S., the answer is yes. They're beautiful trees. We always thought our tree was male because there were never any fruits, but about 10 years ago, it started making them. I wonder, does ginkgo take a long time to make nuts, or could it change sex?

      Hello this is Algae.
Thank you for sharing your precious story :)
As you know, 'Sex conversion in Ginkgo biloba' is a topic that has been well studied in academic.
There is a gene that determines the sex of the Ginkgo tree, and many studies have been published on this.
If your ginkgo tree is not producing fruit after 10 years of age, it is likely male (Some studies have reported that starting from seedling takes 10-20 years, and starting from grafting takes 8-10 years.).
But if you have one tree, even if it is female, it will not produce fruit.
      Have a good day :)

      Hello, this is Algae.
Oh, I'm so glad that ginkgo is loved even in the tropics!
Besides, I am very happy to be able to help you.
I don't know if the ginkgo seeds you bought have been properly treated for germination. However, the best you can do for successful germination is to apply a low-temperature treatment. In the wild, some ginkgo seeds dormant for several years rather than germinate the following year. Therefore, even if the seed has already been low-temperature treated by the seller, further low-temperature treatment is not harmful to the seed.
I recommend low-temperature treating your seeds for about two months. You can store it in the refrigerator at 4 degrees Celsius. And to prevent the seeds from drying out more than necessary, please keep them in a vinyl bag. After the low-temperature treatment is completed, you can proceed with the process in the video.
Some ginkgo enthusiasts try making bonsai to enjoy ginkgo indoors. I am also trying to do something similar to them. However, I do not have enough knowledge about bonsai, and I am in the process of practicing So I don't have a nice result yet. But I will not give up and try. If good results are made, I will inform you through the video.
I wish your ginkgo seed to germinate successfully.
      Have a nice day :)

I'm in love with ginkgos and I'm trying since 3 months to germinate one but I think that the seeds i receive here in Italy are just bad ... If I open one it's all withered and not fully blown up like yours.
I've tried to put them in the fridge for 3 months to simulate winter and then planting them opened /unpeeled or unopened but so far I got 0 success...

Ginkgo tree is very common in Korea. Even if humans do not plant seeds, there are many small ginkgo seedlings around the mother tree.
Unfortunately, fresh ginkgo seeds seem to be rare in Italy. If there is a large ginkgo tree near your house, try gathering fresh seeds in the fall. Be sure to wear gloves when gathering ginkgo seeds. The fruit of the ginkgo tree produces its own odor. In addition, among the substances contained in ginkgo fruit, it contains substances that damage human skin.
It's great that you've tried cold-treating the seeds. Most temperate plants require low temperature treatment for germination or bud formation. It seems that the seeds you purchased have failed to germinate successfully because they are not fresh. And it is recommended not to peel the shell of the seed.
Ginkgo trees are divided into female and male trees. If you don't want the odor of fruits that are produced every fall, grow only one ginkgo tree. When planting ginkgo trees as street trees, government offices in Korea try to select and plant male trees. Nevertheless, it sometimes happens that a male tree turns into a female tree. I don't know if the tree was really transgender or if the government accidentally planted a female tree. In any case, it is impossible for a single ginkgo tree to produce fruit alone.
I wish your ginkgo seedlings to grow beautifully.
      Thank you for visiting :)

      Hello, this is Algae.
Thank you for introducing your story in the comments.
In Korea, the seeds of ginkgo trees are mainly eaten.
Drinking ginkgo leaves as tea is very unfamiliar in Korea.
The fact that ginkgo leaves can be made into tea is very interesting to me.
It seems that not only Korea but also other countries avoid female ginkgo trees.
After all, many people seem to want to avoid the stench emitted by the fruit of the ginkgo tree.
I am glad that my video was helpful to you.
Please wait patiently until the autumn when the fruits and seeds of the ginkgo tree mature.
Considering the possibility that the seeds will not germinate, it is recommended to keep some of the seeds at a low temperature (4℃) for 1-2 months.
I hope that the ginkgo tree just for you will sprout.

      Hello, this is Algae.
Thanks for leaving a nice question.
First of all, congratulations on getting the fresh seeds.
I hope your seeds will be cold-treated for a month, rather than being planted now. The seeds of temperate plants contain germination inhibitors. Their germination inhibitor is a kind of safety device designed to start germination in spring after winter. So, if you try to germinate without low temperature treatment, you will see mold growing instead of sprout. Low temperature treatment of seeds is done in a refrigerator at 4℃.
Ginkgo biloba can also germinate on damp paper towels. But I recommend planting in the soil. In damp paper towels, mold easily grows from germinating seeds and sometimes odors are generated. There is no significant difference between the results on damp paper towel and soil. Therefore, I think that planting seeds in the soil is a convenient and easy way.
I hope that a beautiful ginkgo tree just for you will germinate.
      Have a nice day :)

      Hello, this is Algae.
I am glad that my video was helpful to you.
I am very glad to know that ginkgo seeds are also used as foods outside of Northeast Asia.
Based on Korea, peeled seeds did not germinate regardless of freshness. On the other hand, most of the seeds that were not peeled germinated normally even 1-2 years after harvest depending on storage conditions. I think it's similar where you live. However, this is a case under the premise that the seeds sold in the store are in good condition. If ginkgo seeds are commonly used as food in your country, it is assumed that fresh seeds are sold at low prices. It would not be a bad idea to buy seeds that are not peeled and try to germinate them.
If you take on the challenge of growing ginkgo trees, I wish you the best of luck.

      Hello, this is Algae.
I'm glad my video was helpful to you :)
And I'm happy to get good questions from you.
Q1. Does Gingko seeds need cold stratification in order to break their dormancy ?
Response: Many people have been asked about the need for low-temperature treatment (cold treatment, cold-temperature treatment) processing of ginkgo seeds. Most of the academic materials I have checked contain claims that low-temperature treatment is necessary for the germination of ginkgo seeds. Some academic publications have argued that low-temperature treatment is unnecessary or not essential for the germination of ginkgo seeds, but the overwhelming majority of objections are against it. Some of the oldest academic materials I have seen were published in 1970. The period required for low-temperature treatment is different for each study. They offer as short as 1 month to as long as 3 months or more.
Personally, I support the need for low-temperature treatment processing of ginkgo seeds. Most temperate plants have evolved in a way that requires low-temperature treatment for their seeds. If you don't know if your seeds need low-temperature treatment, the safest way is to try low-temperature treatment. The seeds of temperate plants are cold-resistant and can be stored for a long time at low temperatures. Except for the seeds of tropical plants, I store the seeds at a low temperature for the purpose of long-term storage, and keep them in a state where they can be sown at any time by treating them at a low temperature during the storage process.
Q2. If I understand your method I just need to put seeds in soil and to place them in a sunny indoor window ?
Response: Once your ginkgo seeds have been sufficiently cold-treated, you can plant them in the soil and place them in a warm indoor window. If seeds are planted in pots that have not been properly cold-treated, they will slowly rot.
Do not remove the hard shell of ginkgo seeds. While many people think that the hard shell of ginkgo seeds is a huge challenge for sprouts, from the standpoint of normally germinating seeds, the shell is no problem.
I hope my answer has solved your curiosity.
I am glad that more people around the world love ginkgo trees than I thought.
Due to the stench of ginkgo berries, it is becoming increasingly difficult to see ginkgo trees in the city center of Korea.
I am very fortunate that ginkgo trees are being planted not only in Northeast Asia but also all over the world.
Thank you for visiting my channel.

      Hello, this is Algae.
      Thank you for your support.
The ginkgo trees in the video were grown for arbor day in Korea.
The little ginkgo trees I grew were planted outdoors in the forest on arbor day last year.
Currently, I don't know if the ginkgo trees I planted survived the winter.
One day I plan to make ginkgo bonsai.
However, as I haven't tried making ginkgo bonsai yet, I don't have any specific plans for making a new video related to ginkgo.
In my opinion, it seems possible to grow ginkgo trees in Indonesia.
The warm climate of Indonesia is expected to be similar to the summer of Korea.
I have visited a Malaysian city located on the island Borneo, and the climate there is similar to summer in Korea.
Based on that experience, I think Indonesia (e.g. Java, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Borneo) will be similar.
However, I think there will be many limitations in the process of Ginkgo biloba to flower and produce fruits and seeds.
Most temperate plants require low temperature exposure to form flower buds.
I think ginkgo trees are no exception.
Therefore, while it is possible to germinate ginkgo seeds and grow sprouts into big trees in Indonesia, it is expected that harvesting seeds from trees will be limited.
Additionally, the leaves of ginkgo trees change from green to yellow under the influence of the cool temperatures of autumn.
Therefore, it will be difficult to observe the color change of ginkgo leaves in Indonesia.
I hope my answer has solved your question.
      Have a good day :)

      Hello, this is Algae.
Your passion for temperate trees is impressive :)
Ginkgo biloba, like other temperate tree species, can grow in temperatures of 20-30°C. The temperature conditions that show the most vigorous growth rate are also 20-30℃, so you won't have much trouble growing ginkgo trees. However, low temperature conditions are required for harvesting seeds. In order to complete the natural life cycle of ginkgo trees, low temperature conditions must be provided for the trees.

      Hello, this is Algae.
Thanks for leaving your question :)
The seeds were not intentionally cold-treated (cold stratify). But I just kept the ginkgo seeds as food in a refrigerator at 4℃.
According to some academic studies, low-temperature treatment is required for the germination of ginkgo seeds. There are various opinions on the period, but I recommend to others about 1-2 months of low temperature treatment.
The seeds I used were stored at a temperature of 4℃ for about 2 months, and the germination was recorded on video.
Therefore, low temperature treatment is required for general germination of ginkgo seeds, and my seeds are low temperature treated ones.
I hope my answer has satisfied you.

      Hello, this is Algae.
Thank you for leaving a nice question :)
Is the soil in the pot dry?
If the soil is dry and the leaves and stems are drooping, watering may solve the problem.
Ginkgo biloba requires good quality light.
I hope you give the sprouts the best place you can offer.
If the sprouts are not healthy even though the soil is moist, stop watering and let the soil dry for a while.
If the shoots wither due to excessive watering, your best choice is to transplant the sprouts into new soil.
I hope your sprouts can grow into big ginkgo trees in the future.

      Hello This is Algae.
Thank you for the nice question :)
Ginkgo tree is a plant that lives in temperate climates.
They are distributed in lowlands in temperate climates, and cannot survive in highlands even in temperate climates.
These characteristics are thought to be related to temperature.
I know that Norway belongs to the cold climate like Siberia.
Although ginkgo trees can survive temperate winters, it is expected that they will struggle through Norwegian winters.
As long as the seeds you buy at the grocery store are fresh, they will definitely germinate.
However, seeds will be quarantined in the process of being imported, and this process can be done by strong heat or something.
If there is any damage caused by the quarantine process, such as strong heat, the germination rate of the seeds will be extremely low.
      Have a good day :)

"South Norway is a region with a mild climate. The day temperatures range from 2 °C (36 °F) in January to 19 °C (66 °F) in July. The highest night temperatures could be experienced in July with 12 °C (53 °F), the lowest in February with -2 °C (28 °F)." Ginkgo will grow fine under these circumstances. My two Gingko trees are in my yard in the Chicago suburbs. Coldest winter temperatures here are usually as low as -23 °C (-10 °F) but can get as cold as -32 °C (-25 °F). So unless you are in the arctic circle the trees will thrive. In a good year my Gingko will add 18 inches (46 cm) of growth. If you are ever in the Chicago area, portions of Harlem Avenue (Riverside / Berwyn Area) are lined with Gingko trees and you can gather a bushel of seeds in the fall. A low-temperature treatment is required for ginkgo seeds to germinate.
Although the standards are slightly different for each academic study, a large number of studies have proven the need for low-temperature treatment.

      Hello this is Algae.
Thank you for leaving an interesting question :)
According to checking several academic papers, it was confirmed that various light intensity conditions such as 300, 800, and 2000 μmol m −2 s −1 were applied in the studies.
Honestly, 300 μmol m −2 s −1 is also a fairly strong light intensity condition.
If you want to meet these conditions, you will have to invest a significant amount of money.
      But don't worry.
Unless you are trying to grow ginkgo trees for academic research purposes, you may be able to grow ginkgo trees indoors using a combination of natural light and a standard artificial light source.

You do not need to soak the seeds in water.
Just plant the seeds in the soil.
Soaking ginkgo seeds in water is meaningless.
And cold stratification is strongly recommended.
For the seeds of ginkgo biloba to germinate smoothly, low-temperature treatment is required for about a month.

      Hello, this is Algae.
      I understand your desperate situation.
You need ginkgo seeds as a material for your academic research, right?
Unfortunately it seems difficult for me to deliver Ginkgo Seeds to you.
I live in Korea and have no experience in delivering living organisms, including seeds, abroad. Moreover, according to the Nagoya Protocol, shipping seeds abroad is not an easy task. A legal permit from a government agency is required, and the seeds must be packaged using a packaging method that meets the standards. Furthermore, I am not in the business of selling seeds. Therefore, I am not the suitable person to ship fresh seeds abroad.
If there was a seed product packaged and sold by a Korean seed company, it would have been easier to deliver the seeds to you. However, in Korea, Ginkgo biloba seeds are only used as food and are not popular as seeds for growing ornamental plants. As a result, there are no packaged products sold by seed companies, and it is difficult to find seeds suitable for overseas delivery.
In Korea, a large number of ginkgo seeds are produced every year, and fresh seeds are distributed in the market. These seeds are not only excellent as food, but also perfectly suitable as seeds for germination. What I would recommend to you is to visit Korea and buy the seeds and take them with you.
I know that many countries are tolerant of foreign tourists returning to their home countries by purchasing small amounts of agricultural products or vegetable seeds. In order to prevent diseases and pests related to plants, it is necessary to go through quarantine procedures with heat and chemicals, but it is not a complicated process. In the past, I have the experience of bringing small amounts of mangoes and mangosteens to Korea after traveling to Southeast Asia. At that time, after going through a simple procedure at the airport in Korea, I was able to eat the fruits at my house in Korea.
I have a question for you. Assuming sufficient facilities are in place, I believe tissue culture is one of the most efficient methods of asexual reproduction. By the way, you want to try asexual reproduction using seeds that are the result of sexual reproduction. What is the purpose of this attempt, and what meaningful results do you expect it to have?
In general, tissue culture of plants uses stem or root tissue. In particular, the growing point (SAM, shoot apical meristem; RAM, root apical meristem) or multipotential cell of cambium is the target. However, a large part of the tissue constituting the seed is the endosperm, and the embryo composed of multipotential cells is only a small part. Considering these facts, the goal of the experiment you designed piques my curiosity.
I think that small sprouts that have germinated and started budding may also be good ingredients.
Personally, I am very sorry that I cannot be of much help to you.
Even after COVID-19 is over, if you are still interested in ginkgo, I hope you can visit Korea and buy good quality seeds.
I don't know whether you are pursuing a master's or doctoral program, but I wish you good luck in your academic research activities.

    • @Algae_algae
      @Algae_algae  2 роки тому +1

      Hello, this is Algae.
Thanks for leaving a nice question.
Most trees, including ginkgo biloba, show a very high growth rate in early growth after germination.
However, when a certain level is reached, the growth rate is significantly reduced.
I think this phenomenon is a strategic choice for plant growth.
At the beginning of germination, radicles are first made from seeds. Usually, the main function of radicle is water absorption, and there is a limit in performing the perfect function as a root. A shoot is made based on the moisture absorbed from the radicle and the nutrients stored in the seed. After the shoot is created, the root is strengthened after obtaining energy to use through photosynthesis. However, the shoot made in the early stage cannot prepare enough energy to continue the fast growth rate of the early stage. Poor energy makes the growth of the root slow, and the slow growth of the root leads to the slow growth of the shoot. In summary, the fast growth rate can be continued until the nutrients stored in the seeds are exhausted. After the energy stored in the seed is exhausted, it should grow with the energy obtained from the shoot of a young plant, and the growth rate is lowered because the amount of energy is small.
Of course, the growth of shoot and root is simultaneous. However, I tried to classify the relationship of these factors into each stage and explained it in one cycle. What is clear is that most seeds make the radicle (root) first, and focus on the formation of shoots in the early stages of germination.
If your ginkgo tree does not grow after that, I recommend improving the environment in which the ginkgo tree is grown. ginkgo tree grows well at high light intensity. Please provide sufficient light through sunlight or artificial light sources. And in order to increase the size of the shoot, an increase in the size of the root must be preceded. If ginkgo tree is planted in a pot, check that there is enough space for the roots to grow in the future.
I hope your ginkgo tree can be a big and wonderful tree.
      Have a nice day :)

As for fertilizer, it doesn't matter which fertilizer you use (for vegetables or flowers). However, do not choose the wrong usage out of greed. Trees grow slowly. I am glad that this video was helpful to you :)
I hope it will be helpful to many people, including you in Bulgaria.
It is recommended that you omit the first of the three courses you suggested. And since the process of soaking the seeds in water is not an essential process, there will be no difficulty in germinating the seeds of the ginkgo tree by proceeding only with the second process.
You have already done the first and second steps.
Through the second process, it is thought that the low-temperature treatment required for germinating ginkgo seeds has been sufficiently achieved. Now, if you plant those seeds in a pot with soil, you'll be able to grow a nice ginkgo tree.
      * You have successfully prepared your seeds for sowing. Now all you have to do is plant it.
Please take care not to run dry until the seeds germinate safely. However, avoid unnecessary watering. Personally, I think additional watering is good when the soil surface dries out.
I wish your ginkgo trees to grow successfully.

      Hello This is Algae.
Thank you for leaving a good question :)
Seeds can be collected by crushing the fruit surrounding the seeds and washing them in water. (Use enough power not to break the seeds.)
Since fruit of ginkgo biloba contains toxic substances, be sure to wear rubber gloves and pay attention to safety.
The fruit contains substances to inhibit seed germination.
This is a safeguard to prevent seeds from germinating before winter arrives.
If the seeds do not germinate after planting them, it is because the seeds are of poor quality or have rotted in the soil.

I used culture soil commonly distributed in Korea to grow ginkgo trees.
The main material of the culture soil used is coco peat.
It is a mixed form with some other ingredients added.
      Coco peat 51.5, peat moss 10, vermiculite 13, pearlite 15, zeolite 10, fertilizer 0.5 (%)
Although the ginkgo tree grows wild in areas of Northeast Asia where there is human care, it is adaptable to a variety of environments.
As for the soil, as long as the pH is not extremely high or low, I think that any material with a neutral pH is okay.

Does ginkgo tree original color for female is yellow? Or is it green.? And can we determine if its yellow.?

    • @Algae_algae
      @Algae_algae  2 роки тому +1

      Hello, this is Algae.
      That's a really good question!
Ginkgo biloba, regardless of gender, produces green leaves.
The season when ginkgo leaves change from green to yellow is only in fall.
This does not mean that ginkgo will produce yellow leaves in the fall, it just means that existing green leaves will turn yellow.
The cause of the color change of ginkgo leaves is related to the breakdown of chlorophyll.
As the leaf chlorophyll is destroyed, the color of the hidden accessory pigment is revealed.
So there is no ginkgo tree that only produces yellow leaves. (I've never heard of chlorophyll-deficient varieties.)
Although the color of the leaf changes due to the change of the environment (e.g. temperature), I do not know whether it is possible to induce the color of the leaf to change in a short time through artificial environmental change.

Although I'm curious, I haven't done any further research on the cause of the phenomenon.
So I'm not exactly sure what the cause is.
However, it is clear that the peeled seeds did not germinate at all, and I have confirmed this experience several times.
Either way, it was convenient not to peel the ginkgo seeds and they germinated normally.
I hope someone publishes a research paper with a scientific analysis of this phenomenon.
      Have a nice day :)

@@Algae_algae thanks for your great work. is it possible that you had unintentionally hurt the inner seeds when you removed their shell? how about you try carefully grinding the shell open using sand-paper/abrasion tool without applying pressure to the inner seeds?

    • @Algae_algae
      @Algae_algae  2 роки тому

@@HereNow2226 I agree with your guess. It is possible that I damaged the seeds while removing the shell of the ginkgo seeds. I think using the sandpaper you suggested is also a good approach. However, since it is not necessary to remove the shell to germinate the ginkgo seeds, it seems unnecessary to try to safely remove the shell.
Thanks for sharing your great comments :)

      Hello, this is Algae.
Thank you for watching my video :)
As you might think, growing ginkgo trees in the tropics is not an easy task.
Perhaps in the tropics, getting fresh ginkgo seeds can be difficult.
What I would recommend to you is to find a company that imports fresh ginkgo seeds.
Ginkgo seeds are one of the useful ingredients in Korea.
If an Indian company is importing ginkgo seeds as a food ingredient, I recommend that you buy fresh, unhulled seeds.
If there is no company that imports seeds, I recommend that you visit the country where the ginkgo tree grows.
If you visit a region where ginkgo trees are grown, such as Korea, China, or Japan, in the fall or winter, you can probably buy fresh seeds.
I hope you can buy fresh seeds.
      Have a good day :)

      Hello, this is Algae.
Sorry, I didn't understand exactly what you mean.
Do you want to grow ginkgo trees in India?
It is possible to grow ginkgo trees in India.
However, I do not know whether the ginkgo trees will be able to produce seeds smoothly.
In order to produce seeds smoothly, an appropriate level of low temperature must be provided for a certain period of time.
I'm not sure if the warm climate of India will provide the low temperature conditions for ginkgo trees.
I hope your question has been resolved.
      Have a good day :)

I forgot to ask, does ginkgo seed needs stratify in order to germinate?

    • @Algae_algae
      @Algae_algae  3 роки тому +1

      Hello, this is Algae.
In Korea, high-quality ginkgo seeds are produced. Most of the ginkgo seeds sold on the market as food are fresh and have a high germination rate (However, in the case of products with shell removed in consideration of convenience in using them as food, the germination rate of the seeds converges to 0%.). For this reason, I was able to easily obtain good quality seeds.
In the past, I have experience growing ginkgo trees by collecting seeds from street trees and wild trees. The seeds were randomly planted without any special selection process, and more than 80% of the planted seeds germinated successfully. Based on this experience, I believe that planting freshly harvested seeds is one way to sow fresh seeds.
Good quality seeds are usually large and seemingly undamaged. However, it is impossible to distinguish all bad seeds based on their appearance. One way to separate some of these bad seeds from normal seeds is to place the seeds in a bowl of water. Bad seeds are less dense and float to the surface of the water. On the other hand, good quality seeds that are full inside the shell sink to the bottom of the bowl.
I have experienced the process of harvesting the seeds of ginkgo trees. In the process of washing the seeds from which the pulp of the ginkgo fruit has been removed, the seeds floating on the water are thrown away. Abandoned seeds were only a fraction of the washed seeds, and those that sink in water were perfect as food and as seeds for germination.
I think it's rare to get bad ginkgo seeds. However, I know that this only applies to the Korean environment, and not in countries where ginkgo trees are less common. So the best advice I can leave is all you should aim for is to get fresh seeds. Additionally, of all the seeds available, the larger and denser seeds are likely to be the best seeds.
I hope that your concerns related to seed selection have been resolved :)

      Hello, this is Algae.
The cuttings (cuttage) of ginkgo trees are not included in this video.
If I get a chance in the future, I will try to make a video about cuttings.
First of all, Korea relies on seeds and cuttings for propagation of ginkgo trees.
Cuttings are usually attempted in spring or early summer.
Branches newly grown last year are the main material for cuttings, and to increase the success rate of cuttings, using soft branches that have not been lignified is the key to cutting ginkgo.
I forgot about ginkgo cuttings, thank you for reminding me.
      Have a nice day :)
