    The 300 Weatherby is probably the best elk cartridge on the planet. I80 grain Accubonds at 3150+ fps does the job quickly and humanely with a well placed shot. Loaded down to 3100 fps using 150 grain Accubonds and Partitions is an excellent whitetail, mule deer and pronghorn cartridge too. I wouldn't trade my 1960s Made in Germany Mark V for a new one. Just a Great Rifle !!!!!

    The 300 WBY has actually been chambered in quite a few domestic rifles in decades past - prior to all the newer non belted magnum type cartridges hitting the scene. You could say the 300 WBY's heyday was well before the turn of the century. Many, and I do mean many, hunters have been obsessed with the performance of the 300 WBY. But any way you slice it, the 300 WBY is an awesome cartridge, I don't care who you are. It was the fastest 30 caliber magnum ( in a factory cartridge ) for a very long time. It's still not far from the top. And yet it's not ridiculously over bore like the other two you mention. I think the reason it's not as popular as the 300 WIN is because of the length of the cartridge being too long to work through many rifle actions. Weatherby ammo is indeed expensive, but Remington and Hornady, among others, have made more affordable ammo for it. Personally, I would have picked the 257 WBY over the 300 WBY for being over rated, along side the 30-378 and 6.5-300.
    But this was still entertaining. And to think this was a result of the 7PRC guys getting offended.

    My favorite cartridge is my 6.5x300 bee. I don't care how much powder it needs of US869 it's gonna go freakin fast. I am working up a load now wit US869 and 153.5 berger hybrids and i am just over 3250 with zero pressure. I have my next ladder going forward when the weather cools off a bit more. 3350 shouldn't be hard to get but will see where i find pressure.
    It's an amazing cartridge and worth every grain of powder and throat lost. Barrels are cheap. Long live the 6.5x300 bee.
    Oh just purchased a 338-378 weatherby. Yehaw love this weatherby addiction 😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

    I still may buy a 300 Wby Mag Mark V someday. That being said, when putting together a semi-custom rifle from E.R. Shaw for my son as a college graduation present, although I briefly considered both the 300 Wby Mag and the 300 RUM, I went with the 300 Win Mag because of shootability and affordability/availability/variety of factory ammo.
    Also for these ridiculously overbored cartridges like the .30-.378 and the 6.5-.300 - Weatherby really should offer 28” or even 30” barrels to wring the most out of what a hunting rifle in these cartridges can do. No one who buys a .30-.378 or 6.5-.300 is looking for a carbine, so why not give them the flattest-shooting hunting guns available?

    Embrace the hate! I’m all about 7mm’s and I will say the 7 PRC is a very good cartridge but it is over hyped. I know they said gunpowder issues but whatever. I new cartridge’s chances of catching on is based on getting Hornady’s blessing. Ex: 6.8 Western. Excellent cartridge no support. I disagree on one cartridge; the 300 Weatherby is far from over hyped!

    For anyone who shoots Weatherby rifles, ammo costs should not be an issue, IF you reload. It costs little or no more to reload than similar mag Winchester and Remington calibers. Save and/or buy some brass, anneal the necks after a few cycles. There are other rifle brands that use Weatherby ammo. Remington has made them in their custom line of 700s such as the 7mm, and they also can sell their brass in those calibers. Few years ago I bought 100 Rem 7mm Weatherby cases for the same as their 7mm Rem mag cases. No matter what center fire rounds you shoot or see, save them to reuse or trade.

    In the past: it was a Rolex vs a $300 watch… cartridges- they both do similar things but one is a premium version … in todays world of off the shelf accurate cartridges/rifles… it may get displaced. Weatherby Mark V’s were in kids dreams like a sports car. Writers wrote about them in periodicals and they were a must see at the gun shop …… I remember the complete Weatherby cartridge displays when I was a young dude… seeing the 30-378 for the first time - wow! We currently live in a 6.5 CM world. How things change.

    On the 7 prc I personally don’t like them same with 7mm rem mag as much. We see reflection a lot in those. Me personally cartridges that are overrated are the new ones that everybody and their brother is talking about. Will these said rounds be around for decades to come maybe. Will they be the best new thing maybe. Do they do the job yes but in my experience I tend to stick with the cartridges that are common and will always be available. A round that doesn’t get a lot of attention is the 257 Roberts and 257 weatherby mag. Both excellent rounds.

      That’s crazy you said that the .257 Roberts. I’m 41 years old I’ve never even heard of that gun before. Awhile back I was working with some guys and talking about hunting. One guy said I have a gun I’ll sell you. I asked what it was said he didn’t know next thing I know he wanted in the door with it. It was a Winchester model 70 pre 1964. 1959 with a serial number check I bought that gun for $450 dollars. Shoots great.

    This is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone characterize the .300 win mag as anemic.
    On a different note, this video has inspired me. I have been thinking for a while that there should be a market for what is essentially a bull pup single shot rifle.
    Imagine a rifle with a falling block action, the frame sits about the center of the barrel, and the action goes all the way to the rear shoulder or beyond (the barrel could actually sit on the shoulder.
    I am imagining a rifle that weighs 8 lbs with a 36” barrel, and 4” suppressor in a 40” overall length. That’s 4.5” shorter than a Weatherby Mark V, with an extra 10” of barrel!
    I imagine the guys who really like magnums would REALLY like this.

    I would argue the barrel burner factor. Typically a gun that burns barrels is not the type that people shoot all weekend long. That being said, I don’t mind barrel burners because sighting in once a year and hunting might burn 20 rounds… so those type of rifles can last a long time if your not just pumping rounds through it all the time.

    I tend to prefer the other end of the spectrum from Weatherby and gravitate towards the cartridges of maximum efficiency. The 7x57 was a military round designed to be fired over and over from a soldier’s gun without overheating the barrel and burning it out (within reason of course) and giving decent velocities while burning the least amount of powder and a recoil that won’t cause a flinch to a fatigued shooter. The forethought that went into getting it just right is what I appreciate about a cartridge.

    From early on, Roy Weatherby marketed his products more toward the “elite”.
    The proprietary nature and cost of Weatherby rifles and ammo along with their opulence and exclusivity were often somewhat prohibitive to the average blue collar sportsman. This was an issue along with the economic conditions of the 50’s sand 60’s.
    It was due to this that many were either oblivious or just less familiar with what Weatherby was all about or the performance characteristics they offered.
    Take for instance the 7MM Weatherby.
    First emerging in the early 1940’s, its velocity, range and energy characteristics are more comparable to the 300 Winchester mag. Still, there is little or nothing mentioned about it in any of the major hunting publications of the time.
    Remington didn’t introduce their version of the 7 mag until the 1960’s. Once they did, it took the market and was widely discussed by the likes of writer and hunter Warren Page as well as numerous others. Many wrote of excitement over the cartridge without any recognition that Weatherby’s more powerful version had already been around for over 20 years.
    The lonely 7 MM Weatherby never took off with the consumer market like other Weatherby cartridges did, and certainly not like Remington’s version. In no way does this reflect the impressive performance of the Weatherby 7MM.
    Some of the same phenomenon exists to a degree with the 300 RUM more recently. After the release of the RUM in 1999, many spoke of how powerful and impressive the cartridge was and how it was the fastest and impressively accurate at long range. They praised the cartridge as groundbreaking with seemingly no recognition or notice that it only actually has a 60-90 fps advantage over the Weatherby cartridge.
    The big Weatherby was apparently the big smile on the face of Weatherby shooters for a long time already and was known to them before the end of WWII.
    Is the 300 RUM a great cartridge? No question! But for an insignificant advantage in velocity and slightly more powder capacity, barrel life drops like a rock!
    Is it worth it? Everyone has to decide such things for themselves. I have no desire to malign the 300 RUM, but if we engage in comparison as part of our discussion and research, it’s important to know the facts.

    Another factor that influenced the market for hunters going back to WWII is the many great writers of the major hunting and shooting publications. The likes of Jack O’Connor, Bob Milek, Elmer Keith, Warren Page, Craig Bodington, Peter Hathaway Capstick and so on. All of these fellows contributed their vast knowledge In reviews of rifles, cartridges and hunting. Many of them are no longer with us to provide their vast wisdom and knowledge. Hunting and shooting was what they did for a living. When they gave their opinions on various rifles and cartridges, most of us paid attention. When they wrote about what they liked and what they didn’t, it mattered a lot!
    It is sad that many of these great gentlemen are gone. Because of their absence and lack of guiding knowledge may be some of the reason we become involved with engaging in such a ridiculous discussion as to suggest that the.300 Weatherby is overrated.

    The 300 Weatherby is the only reason that Weatherby is in business. Many rifles far superior to the Mark V are available. Ammo is widely available. Is it some kind of barn-burner? No, but it is almost the perfect fit and I think Roy knew this. Recoil and muzzle blast are a wee more than the 300 Win Mag, but tolerable with just a little more practice. Beyond this are the 30 Nosler, 300 RUM, and 30-378 Weatherby,, all of which are significantly more punishing with not a lot more ROI for 95% of us. To me, the most overrated Weatherby cartridge is the 338-378. With less than 100 FPS advantage over the 340 Weatherby on a good day, brutal recoil, and subpar accuracy to the 338 Lapua, I don’t see it. If you really want Thor’s Hammer that shoots as flat as a 270 Win the 378 Weatherby has no competition.

    • @douglasborgaro6801
      @douglasborgaro6801 2 місяці тому +2

      @markcox
      I must vigorously disagree with a number of your statements. To suggest that the only reason Weatherby exists is due to their 300 is very short sighted. It tells me that you may have less familiarity with many cartridges in the Weatherby line.
      If you’re not a big Weatherby proponent, that’s all fine and good, but based on performance in ballistics, Weatherby has numerous stand outs that have been cost prohibitive to some and misunderstood overall.
      I’ve repeatedly posted this my argument about the 300 RUM.
      With all components being equal, such as bullet weight, barrel length, optimum load & so forth, the 300 RUM has up to 90 fps advantage over the 300 Weatherby. The difference is not recognizable in the field. Still there are many that don’t know this.
      Other Weatherby cartridges that have impressive performance include: 270, 7MM, 340, 257, and 460.
      These cartridges have a reputation not only for performance ahead of their time, but outstanding accuracy as well.
      If you were unaware of this, then your knowledge or experience with them may be less compared to some other cartridges. There are historical records of the success of these cartridges I have named and each of them have earned the impressive reputation from a ballistics standpoint. To really know them is to love them.

      @@douglasborgaro6801 Weatherby would not survive in its current state without the 300 Weatherby. It is by far the most popular cartridge/ammo followed by the 257. The others trail significantly behind in sales. For the record, I own all of the Weatherby cartridges except the 224 and the 416.

      I don’t know if I can totally explain it, but I actually feel better after hearing you say this.
      Based on how Weatherby started early on and the target audience of their marketing it seems that they limited themselves a bit out of the gate.
      Nonetheless, based from the narrow viewpoint of ballistic performance by itself, I believe that there were numerous calibers developed by Weatherby that have a profound impact on the world of rifles and cartridges. I do understand and agree the impact that the 300 Weatherby has had on their marketability and the company as a whole.

      @markcox
      You know, now that you mention the 7MM Weatherby, there is a very interesting history about this cartridge.
      It emerged in the early 1940’s with ballistic performance that was literally generations ahead of its time. Because it was proprietary and a bit more spendy than other cartridges of the day, you didn’t see or hear anything about about it in the big hunting publications of that time.
      It wasn’t until the 1960’ s that Remington introduced its 7 Mag, which was ballistically inferior to the Weatherby by a recognizable margin. With Remington’s introduction, it was as if many never knew such a thing existed and many praised it as groundbreaking.
      Go figure. It never got the accolades it deserved and even today there are plenty of fellows that are oblivious to how truly great it is!

    I'm sorry, you can't overrate anything because of the original purchase amount and its availability, you can only overrate something on ability. Meaning, if you can do the same task with amunition X instead of ammunition Y, with the same results. If X can do it just as good (or God forbid even better) than Y could perhaps be overrated. In my humble opinion, Wby cartridges are not overrated at all, they are Magnum loads, and they do have the extra FPS (and recoil) to prove it. Bullett availability is constantly increasing, and there are several non Wby rifle makers that offer Wby chamberings. I get a lot of crap as well, because the younger techno crowd loves hyped up techno stuff, so they really get offended when you prefer old-school anything.

    If the 300 Weatherby is overrated I'm 10ft tall, bullet proof and play water-polo on the back of a unicorn, in the whitewater rapids of the Colorado River. Google be damned. My 300 Weatherbys have served me well for 40 years on 4 continents. I have no plans to give them up. With that being said, at one time I switch to a 300 Win just because 300 Weatherby ammo was hard to find in 180 grn in my area. Did I notice a difference? No, not really and neither did the game. I don't think I've noticed a difference in any of my 300 (Win. WBY, RUM, WSM). Heck unless the shot is long for iron sights the little old 300 Savage gets it done. I will say the 300 WBY was the king of the magnum mountain for 50+ years. It did set the stage for everything that came after WW-II in the magnum and high-speed cartridge world. Love it or hate it, give the old girl her dues.
    Cheers, Jeff

      One Weatherby cartridge that has crazy down range energy is the 416 Wby with 350 gr. TTSXs. In comparing factory loads, this cartridge has more energy than the 378 Wby out to 500 yds! And this cartridge has just a bit less energy at 200 yds. compared to a 338-378 Wby at the muzzle! Almost 5,000 ft. lbs. at 200 yds!! Insane down range energy! Out to 500 yds anyway.

    Have to disagree Austin the 300 weatherby sits at legend status for a very very good reason. It is far from overrated. And the 30-378 and the 6.5-300 are also certainly not overrated they are the fastest and most badass cartridges in there league!! Just because something is overbore, overpriced, and really doesn’t serve any logical purpose other than having the fastest and flattest and most expensive cartridges does certainly not make them overrated, I believe that overrated cartridges are ones that simply cannot do what people believe in there own minds can do, such as the 270win and 6.5 creedmore, nothing at all wrong either, other than the people who own them believe they are the be all end all of cartridges, hence the term overrated.
