  • The "bolt-in" Atlas Transfer Case for the late Jeep® JL Wrangler and JT Gladiator Pickup is popular. In this HD video, Steve Roberts at Advance Adapters demonstrates how to properly shift this JL/JT transfer case that comes with an all-new Advance Adapters cable shifter system.
This rugged transfer case and its available shift positions offer each of the common 4x4 modes plus Low Range 2WD (rear only) and front only 4WD. Steve shows how to easily and safely shift an Atlas transfer case. If you have an Atlas transfer case in your 4x4, bookmark this video for reference on the trail!

This is the Advance Adapters Atlas transfer case. It has been a retrofit upgrade for Jeep and other vehicles. Many off-road racers use the Atlas transfer case. Depending on what 4x4 you own, an adapter may be available for installing the Atlas in your vehicle. The late JL Wrangler and JT Gladiator installations can be a bolt-in package. There are videos here at the channel about that installation and others. For more details, contact Advance Adapters or visit their website.

Great video, thanks. Does this apply to Jeep TJ also or are there differences? I've not been able to shift my 2 speed Atlas into front H with the rear in neutral. Should I be able to do this? Haven't tried since watching this video. Looking forward to your response. Many thanks! Miles W in AZ.

Miles...It should work this way for an Atlas with twin sticks. Make sure the linkage is adjusted correctly and moves to all positions. Beyond that issue, the helpful tech support at Advance Adapters can walk you through troubleshooting.

As a footnote, your "front dig" (front wheel drive only) mode will only work in Low Range. Here are the Advance Adapters' operation instructions for the Atlas II:
"2. The Atlas transfer case will not allow the unit to be shifted into front wheel drive high range. This dictates the sequence of shifting the front and rear axles in and out of high range. One way of thinking about this can be that Rear-High is the path to/from low range. When shifting into high range, the rear axle must be shifted first and when shifting out of high range the front axle must be first."
The full rundown is worth reading at the Advance Adapters' website. Here is a link to all the operation steps: www.advanceadapters.com/c-atlas-transfer-case-shifting-operation
Here's the history of the Atlas and its developments over the years. This is helpful if you know the production period for your Atlas: www.advanceadapters.com/b-atlas-tc-history-updates-to-the-atlas-over-the-years-faq

The Atlas transfer case is a fully gear-drive (non-chain) unit. It is "part-time" 4x4 and must be manually shifted from 2WD high range into 4WD high and 4WD low range-or front drive/dig only low-range. The unit has the kind of stamina available in legendary gear-drive units like the New Process 205 often found in late sixties, seventies and eighties 4x4 GM, Dodge and Ford heavier duty trucks. The part-time 4x4 NP205 was still a heavy-duty option into the 1990s.
