Great information. I've driven my mgb about 60,000 in the last 5 years and never done anything to the gearbox other than change the oil twice. its the most pleasant gearbox I've ever driven.

Do you even hear the aircraft flying over head anymore? LOL sounds like a WW2 Bomber going over your head when you get to third gear. Great video, really descriptive. I have a dozen gearboxes, and yes, no body seems to need them.

I have over 100k miles on my O/D gearbox & it wasn't new when I fitted it (original box is non O/D). Apart from changing the oil & the O/D filter & the nylon bush for the gearstick I haven't had to touch it in all those miles. The shift on the box is the best I've had & I normally encounter poor synchros after extended miles on Triumph & Ford boxes but this box just keeps going. Its only downside is weight but then the rest of MGB is built like a tank.

Wonderful video!!!! I recently topped off my transmission oil and it's easier to move the shift lever. So it's easier to shift now. It was around a quart low !! So if your shifter is tough, check ur oil level. I just thought it was because it's an old transmission, but that was not the case.
But besides this, I am glad John Twist gives this gearbox a big thumbs up for being a rugged design. Hopefully my '72 Roadster has tens of thousands of miles ahead of her before needing a new transmission or a rebuild. I always liked 4th gear and its 1:1 gear ratio as well. Good stuff !! Thanks John! I learn a lot from these videos.

Thanks for the updated video! I inherited my dad's MGA 1622 engine recently. He told me that it has an MGB gearbox but wasn't sure which model it was from. I would think an early MGB model. What would be some things to look for to identify which year it would be from?

I put 75w90 gear oil, did I have to change the oil and put 20w50 engine oil?

Is the laygear (countershaft) submerged in oil, as it's positioned low in the gear box?
Also, I didn't realize all that "stuff" turns even when the car is in Neutral !!!! I thought it would be mostly disconnected from the engine. Interesting, my friends.

John, my MGB transmission will not shift into any gear. I bought the transmission from a guy whose father took it out of his car evidently to replace it with a gearbox with an overdrive. I have not taken anything apart yet to see what the problem may be. It is sitting on the floor and I cannot get it to go into any gear. I am guessing it is the linkage between the shifter and the rod that moves the levers. What do you think...
