  • At first, I thought living in a cottage would be too ‘cutesy’ for my taste, until I could develop my own sophisticated version of cottage style. Both inside and out. I’ll be talking more about this in videos to come, but here’s a start…enjoy! #cottagestyle #cottagedecor #cottagegarden

Hint for umbrella. My husband solved the issue! He drove a pipe (just slightly larger than the umbrella pole) into ground that came up to the bottom of the patio table. Just insert pole through table into tall pipe. No need for umbrella stand. We are near the gulf coast and this was a successful solution.
Also keeps table from blowing over!

Don't ever apologize for wanting some privacy from the neighbours, it's a very English thing. You can talk to your neighbours when you want to but don't always have to. Yes, take down the shutters! Love the idea of a front patio. We have a brick one and use it all the time, weather permitting in Illinois. We step down to it from the small front porch. It is in front of the large casement living room window. ❤️🇬🇧

The Calla Lilies are one of my favorite. They grow well here in Central IL. They like full sun and well drained soil. Although I will say that mine are not far from where our dryer vents which I think is a huge help as we can get pretty cold in the winter....... but the bulbs are planted in a protected area with warmth from the dryer vent. Immediately I used some, and years later after my mom died and I moved into the house where I grew up I actually did a nice job of laying brick, creating edging in front of the house, etc.-and I was a bit over 50 at the time!

Dear Linda and Stewart, thank you for another nice video. I would remove the shutters, then everything will be more balanced. The shutters accentuate the 3 different types of windows at the front too much. And without the shutters, the beautiful new lamps look better. I like it when people give their opinion, it makes you think about your choice. And even if they are the opposite of your own choice, they still make you better aware of why you chose something. Good luck with all the choices!

I agree shutters encroach on porch lighting and visually compete with the front door-the "brass" highlights will add custom look. Cottage on the Hill plaque-CHARMING! Will the historical society allow a pergola over your english garden seating area? It would add some texture/dimension along with all of your new plantings and offer privacy for your bathroom window. Oh my, YES, YES, a thousand times YES! I was trying to keep my opionion to myself, but those tiny brass lights were just making me cringe. Less is more. I really
like the brass on the door by itself and think the black carriage lights in their own beaty make the brass on the door really stand out (POP)! I was so very saddened
to see you leave that delightful Vater Lattice Top Fence behind, and was so, so happy to see you carried that wonderful design to your new cottage!! Have been with
you Linda, for years and I must say, although we are the same age, and I have a Hubbs and we have 5 delightful grandchildren, You Linda, are my Joy of the day!🥰

You had mentioned the yellow supports for the trees as a necessity but not a favorite. My husband brought a design tip back from a trip to Disney. When they want to camouflage something like a construction wall, they paint it a dark green. So we did the same with a raised garden bed and a wooden pallet that we use for climbing vines. It turned out so well, making it all blend in with the landscape. Just a thought for your yellow tree supports.

Love love love your office, and the color palette. As soon as Stewart walked into your office. It automatically gave me a sense of serenity, and could picture lots of creativity happening in there. You might find yourself daydreaming intermittently between work sitting at your desk, and I sense that was the idea in the positioning of the desk. Love the new lights for the front porch, they will give the front porch a bright welcome to you, and your guests in the evening hours. Would you consider changing the color of the horizontal white pieces of wood that are going along the wall below the windows to the grey or black that’s on the house?

I would leave the carriage lights black…and change the light above to black as well. I would leave the brass ONLY as accents on the door, mailbox and the house plaque that will be installed.

Yes to the new carriage lights. And, the gold rubbing idea is inspired! Definitely try that & try faux shutter removal. I love the plaque idea too.

Shutters removed, love the new lights & yes on brass brushing to match jewelry on door. Plus consider the walk around space on the patio when the full diameter of the umbrella is open. I’d hate to see someone’s eye poked.

Love the new lights! Shutters need to go because it will be to crowded with shutters, larger lights and Cottage on the Hill plaque. I wonder if shutters were even part of the original design of house. They just don’t go with house. This is going to be beautiful. Your patio sounds fabulous. You have such a good eye for everything that I’m sure the patio will be perfect size when you make final decision. Thank you for sharing all this with us.

My grandmother used to grow the while calalillies and during Easter she would grate pastel chalk into a powder and use a cotton ball to dust them with different colors. They were beautiful. She grew in mostly shade in California, near Redondo Beach.
