First of all, Davinci is adorable. Secondly, Thanks for sharing your story. I have 4C hair, but my mom's natural hair is straight and waist-length. So my whole life I've constantly heard people say that I didn't get the "good hair". Well, they're wrong. 4C hair is beautiful and unique. Everyone also needs to learn that It's common for African Americans to have different hair textures within our immediate families due to a mix of Native American ancestry and the horrors of forcible violation during U.S. slavery.
Only a very small percentage of Black Americans have Native American DNA and the majority of Black Americans who have European lineage do so because of interracial marriage, not because of rape. Also Black people are the most diverse group of people. People in Africa with no admixture have a range of skin colors and hair textures. I don't know why people insist on attributing our beauty and/or diversity to race mixing when the MAJORITY of Black people (including Black Americans) are not mixed.
@@ct5951 I don't want to distract from Toya's wonderful video so I'm gonna keep it brief. Unless you are a descendant of a family who can and have traced both their legacy as slaves in the American South all the way back to the 1700's as well as their Native American lineage STFU. Truly ST all the way the FU you ignorant twit who I wasn't even talking to. No Black American who descends from formerly enslaved people in this country needs to explain anything to you or anyone else. We survived. We endure. AND our hair is gorgeous.
Like it was said, I don’t want to go too far from the intent of this beautiful video either.....There is though, a part of your comment @Blaze Hot, that needs correcting. RAPE is the primary cause of the racial diversity that is buried within the #dna of most Black People. Slaves weren’t even “allowed” to wed each other lawfully. Interracial unions absolutely weren’t ordained by any church, and even less occurring; were those couples; the couples what we see represented by interracial couples today. It was the “Passing” community of Black people that were more likely to be in interracial relationships. So although it MAY have happened; not nearly in the numbers that would have been necessary to account for the consistent presence of European/Other #dna found in most Black Americans. FYI....approximately 20% of the average Black persons #dna IS from “non-African” origins.
Self- reported African Americans averaged to 0.8% Native American ancestry.👀 Keeping in mind; it is not determined what part of this figure has been authenticated by #dna analysis. Js
I had a conversation with my sister about this topic and you explained it so well! She has what's called 'good hair' and I was blessed with 'bad hair'. At the end of the day all hair is good hair. We just need to learn that new mentality. Thank you!
There is something so interesting about finally chopping your hair... then going back to the perm, then it just not feeling right, even though you have had it with your natural hair... then chopping it off again... then back to natural..... there is just something about having said to yourself..."this is my hair, how it grows... this is who I am"... the perm, just never feels right again....even though now and then it makes its appearance on your head!
This was a beautiful video. I remember watching that 24yr old you video about going natural before I big chopped. It made me angry that people were making you feel bad for wanting the hair that literally grows out your head.. That video was one of the reason why I finally did it 🙂. I was like I dare anyone to tell me something. My body my choice is not just for reproduction issues! Thank you for sharing.
@@LaToyaEbonyHair - I only found your channel last summer. I like to watch old videos as well so I can learn the journey of the people I subscribe to 🙂
You did this 👏🏽🙌🏽 everything you said I felt. I’m mixed and my brother got the “good hair “ but the longer my hair gets I’m starting to appreciate my curls. So thank you for sharing your story with us.
Please also recognize how "WE" talk about ourselves in reference to "good vs bad" hair "light vs dark" skin etc. It makes a difference. The title did jump out and caught my attention to write this comment. I do enjoy your content. I commented after I watched the video. Great job! You addressed the generational trauma and please delve more into this which is why the natural hair movement is and was so important to our health as well as healing from systematic oppression too. Your mom's comments were are just as true as your journey as well especially due to your profession in the dramatic arts and her experiences as a hair dresser for people in that field and many others before our generation.
Phenomenal video. 100k subscribers you come. I've been a subscriber since 2020 and you helped me to love and embraced my natural hair. Thank you LaToya
Thank you so much for posting this! Even while natural I still struggle with what looks good or acceptable. Due to so many generations before us having the debate of good vs bad hair, I notice that my family only will compliment my hair when its a twist or braid out and not a wash n go style. We as a community (and myself) have a long way to go.
Excellent video ... all young sistahs need to see this video so they grow up KNOWING that AA hair IS the good hair, the PHENOMENAL hair. The oppressor does NOT define AA hair - the Most High God does, & He doesn’t make mistakes. He gave us PHENOMENAL hair!
Thank you for sharing this. I am encouraged by the small signs of hope and healing from how every aspect of Black folks has been denigrated and denied. We gotta talk about it.
Loved this! Someone told me I shouldn’t go natural because I was blessed with such a beautiful head of hair.....well I had to give up relaxers to embrace my real texture of so called ”blessed” hair. Some of us have been so brainwashed to believe that if our hair is kinky it isn’t amazing. Once again, thank you for proving them wrong. I cringe when people reference loose curly hair as “good” hair. If hair is healthy....then it is good! Regardless of the texture and curl pattern.
Thank GOD for our hair, and for all it's able to do. May we all learn to embrace and love our natural beauty. This video just motivated me to wash and style my hair lol.
Beautiful job Toyaboo!!! As someone who has watched you for a long, long time, I can say that you have inspired me to step up my 4C natural styling game. Great video girlfriend. Not only is your hair phenomenal but so are you! Blessings to you. ❤ (ChiLady)
You are beautiful. Your hair is beautiful. I needed this video. I’m from Namibia (a little country in Africa) and the concept of good hair vs bad hair exists here too. It’s exhausting and unnecessary.
So I understand where you coke from ,I went natural because every time I got a relaxer I would get horrible nose bleeds my dad said no more relaxers for my child I enjoyed not getting my scalp burned and not having nose bleeds every month. After my hair transitioned to natural I got bullied so hard because my hair was so big, long and kinky I started hating it and myself. The self hate continued so much I started losing my hair then started locs to save my hair. From 15-20 inches of hair ending up to 4 inches over hating and neglecting my hair. Grew my locs for five years and cut them last year. I felt so naked took time to like myself with short hair ,got irritated with shrinkage and tangling but now a year later I like my hair more than I did when I was a teen

It doesn’t matter if it’s 3B , 4B or 4C , I always see y’all rocking amazing hair styles and being so creative with your natural styles or your wigs and your protective styles. None of your hair sucks , they’re all beautiful and I no shame to admit that I’m jealous of it sometimes , not in a bad way and I don’t appropriate your styles or anything I just envy it’s beauty and all the cultural talent you have to work with it. I hope my comment comes across the good way , I always watch Black hair videos because it’s just beautiful.

This is my first time seeing your channel, and I must say your natural hair enhances your beauty so much more than the relaxed look. I've been completely natural since 2012, and I've never liked my hair more than now. God didn't make any mistakes giving us hair that's full of life that comes in 120 different curl patterns. And it's beautiful, especially when we take care of it, and ourselves!

I'm so glad you chose to follow your own mind and not to listen to anyone else about going natural, we've been conditioned to be ashamed of the hair that grows naturally out of our scalp, but you knew better because you felt better about yourself, you had pride in your African heritage and now look at you you're rocking that gorgeous hair, peace and good health to you and your family :)
It was your hair blown out being as long as that weave in the beginning for me. Natural hair is one of the most beautiful and unique things that God created. I admire you so much for sharing your journey. Your road was harder than most because you had no one who paved the way for you. But look what you’ve done for so many other little girls that won’t have to go through what you did. They won’t have to wait until they’re an adult to be able to love that part of themselves. They will know they are beautiful from day one, and that will be all. 🤍
I felt this so deeply. Our hair is something we should be so proud of, but sadly it doesn't always come naturally thanks to what society 'teaches' us. Well done for doing the work, you're awesome xxx
Baby Girl, YES! This made me happy through and through. I grew up in the 90s too and can definitely relate... My Mom used to say, “Aren’t you going to do your hair?”, and I’m like, “It is done” and walked out the door rocking my high puff. It’s generational for sure - the perspective - and I’m happy you’re out here sharing your story and empowering others. Get it girl. You’re beautiful and your hair is too. xo
this was really poignant and interesting. been recommended a ton of videos like this lately and it definitely helps me learn more about the black experience here in the us, cuz i grew up with my white family and i feel more white than black even tho i’m more black by blood
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this video! The 2010 clip of you talking about going natural looked like an audition tape for like MTV or ANTM lol....wait? Did you try out for ANTM??? It was the vernacular for me. The 90s...what a time to grow up! This was such a great video. The head and shoulders does good on your hair. I know a few friends that have active scalps that swear by this.Thank you for sharing a little history of yourself.
Gosh, this morning, I was just thinking about the good hair/nappy hair culture that is part of our history. I remember hot combs 😩 as a child in attempts to keep those naps at bay ‘cause I didn’t have “good” hair! I am glad we are at a point of embracing our good hair no matter the size or look of our curl or coil. Very nice video!
Omg I also went back to relaxers four years ago and it took my hair out. I told myself that if I didn't know how to manage my own natural hair, what makes me think that I can take care of my hair while relaxed? Four years after relaxers, I finally realized that it's not what products I use, but what ingredients I use. It's not how do I grow hair, it's how do I retain my new length. My new beauty supply store is the produce section now. I'm now more excited for my journey than I have ever been.
I strongly suggest that u write about ur hair journey. I firmly believe ur story would be a blessing to naturals, new naturals, and those still on the fence. I'd buy it.... unless I can get a free copy for suggesting it. 😏

This was like a mini movie. Loved it 🥰
First of all, Davinci is adorable.
Self- reported African Americans averaged to 0.8% Native American ancestry.👀
Keeping in mind; it is not determined what part of this figure has been authenticated by #dna analysis. Js
I had a conversation with my sister about this topic and you explained it so well! She has what's called 'good hair' and I was blessed with 'bad hair'.
At the end of the day all hair is good hair. We just need to learn that new mentality.
Thank you!
I love a good hair story 💙
Thank you for stopping by to hear it. ❤️
I love how that photo of Normani was included @2:38 and how it juat fitted right in the 90’s era. shot from her ‘recent’ music video gheheheh😍
Our nappy hair IS GOOD ENOUGH
This was a beautiful video. I remember watching that 24yr old you video about going natural before I big chopped. It made me angry that people were making you feel bad for wanting the hair that literally grows out your head.. That video was one of the reason why I finally did it 🙂. I was like I dare anyone to tell me something. My body my choice is not just for reproduction issues! Thank you for sharing.
😭 You remember?! Wow, that means you’ve followed my journey for over 10 years with channel changes and all. Thank you so much! ❤️
You’re amazing beyond words. Thank you for being you.
I wish this was a 45 minute long documentary 😭😭😭 thank you for this video❤ this is so personal and I feel so embraced? Thank you SO MUCH
New subbie! I’m 40 years old and still struggle with loving my 4C hair. I felt every word you said in this video. 💜
Why did I just cry with your 23yr old self? She was so brave to question why.
When you said I didnt get good hair. I got phenomenal hair. I screamed so loud!! Yaaas!
This is so emotional. Awesome video
From the storyline to the narration to the visual support. 10/10
The way you segued into the sponsored content...Chef's Kiss!!! Because of you, I will be checking out Royal Oils.
Just BEAUTIFUL! Thank you for sharing 😍
Aww thank you Cali! My sista from another mista ❤️
GOD this woman is so smart, you can just feel it by the way she talks and carry herself. You are incredible (it is my first time watching you)😊
Not only are you beautiful your voice and diction is as phenomenal as your hair! All The Way Up, Sista.
I HAD TO COMMENT THIS WAS SO BEAUTIFUL IN EVERY WAY!!!.THANK YOU FOR SHARING A PIECE OF YOU!!!
I feel you ,my dad always says I don't have good hair and it has really affected my confidence.
Beautiful! I loved hearing your hair-story! I agree, you have PHENOMENAL hair 😍. 4C hair is so beautiful♥️
Beautiful job Toyaboo!!! As someone who has watched you for a long, long time, I can say that you have inspired me to step up my 4C natural styling game. Great video girlfriend. Not only is your hair phenomenal but so are you! Blessings to you. ❤ (ChiLady)
Heeey Chilady 👋🏾 ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yeeees! Loved this video. So honest and relatable. " I didnt get good hair, I got phenomenal hair!" Caught chills when you said that. Well done!
This is the best video on black hair, black issues I've seen on UA-cam. Our hair is fantastic . Be proud of it. He didn't make any mistakes. When are we really going to realize this?
Her story/hair story...moving and triumphant. Nicely done!
Beautiful story 🥰 you truly have phenomenal hair and u r a phenomenal woman. And OMG when I say your son took your face!!!! That pic of u as a young girl looks exactly like your son. Peace and blessings 😘
Awwww. I always say, " It's not good hair, it's good products". Products are everything. I'm nastalgic seeing clips from Toyaboo Tresses. Thanks for sharing. Been rocking with you since 2010.
LaToya you kinda look like Kyla Pratt, also I love your hair, it’s gorgeous ❤️
Y’all can do so many amazing things with your hairs !
Thank you for sharing your hair journey all of these years. You are a positive trailblazers for people with type 4 hair. And I think you video with Anthony Dickies was totally awesome!!
La Toya thank you for your transparency and vulnerability; please know that this work has liberated other Queens and Kings to stand in the true majesty of ALL of their black phenotypes!
I not only celebrate with and for you; I simply celebrate YOU!
Thank you for shining your light !
Love to you Queen !
🙏🏾❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
What a phenomenon you are?! This story is amazing and so relatable. I've been natural since 2005 but I really didn't start embracing my natural hair until 2012. The title had me at "Hello" let me see what this is about. When you said I don't have good hair ...I have phenomenal hair>>>I said I'm subscribing to this Sister's channel she is a Queen!! Love it! Love your journey and your hair is Amazing!
Beloved we didn’t seed that hate...#466...hair...color...it has divided and destroyed and diminished the Devine self worth of ourselves...thank you for your powerful 👁💡💡💡spiritual journey...✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾🖤🖤🖤
You are someone special. So different and uniquely created! I really enjoyed this!!!
It’s impossible to ignore Black women who are funny, articulate and confident when showing up to the table and I appreciate how you share your history and your “hairstory,” Sis! I don’t subscribe to many channels but I’m a true fan. Also want to share a book about Black hair that I really like: Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America by Lori L. Tharps and Ayana D. Bryd.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I felt this so deeply. Our hair is something we should be so proud of, but sadly it doesn't always come naturally thanks to what society 'teaches' us. Well done for doing the work, you're awesome xxx
Thank you for sharing with us...I applaud your boldness and how you've embraced your natural hair texture...love that!
You’re beautiful and your hair is too. xo
Your eyes are so gorgeous!! Our hair is so versatile and a big responsibility.
this was really poignant and interesting. been recommended a ton of videos like this lately and it definitely helps me learn more about the black experience here in the us, cuz i grew up with my white family and i feel more white than black even tho i’m more black by blood
I'm awestruck with your vignette . It was emotional yet therapeutic and inspiring. Exceptional piece of work!
I subscribed for a reason. You are my hair mom. You teach me so much about my hair as well as confidence. Thank you so much.
I loved this. People will get used to it. I don't care, because I don't have that damaged hair anymore!
Thank you for this video because you have been encouraging my daughters.
My daughter said Mom she has hair just like me My hair shinkage is beautiful.
I’m so proud of u. Idk why but your video made me cry. Maybe because I’m pregnant lol, I appreciate your video...Thank u for shearing.
Im 4 years natural and was very much looking forward to a relaxer to 'improve my look'. This video reminded me. Thanks!
I strongly suggest that u write about ur hair journey. I firmly believe ur story would be a blessing to naturals, new naturals, and those still on the fence. I'd buy it....
unless I can get a free copy for suggesting it. 😏
Didn't even go to the comment section, cause I didn't want to miss out on anything she has put together. Beautifully done.
Bye girl! Fed up about hair drama. Just roll with the Naps. Dayaam!
Our hair can form into anything we choose just like the universe
Wow, beautiful! Beautifully told, beautifully shown, beautifully shared. Not surprising based on how you share yourself & your content, just beautiful! And clearly a labor of love & lots of time & energy. 👍🏽💕👏🏽. You clearly are blessed to be a blessing. 🙏🏽💗 Thank you!
look at lil baby you (lookin like u belong on Different World w the rest of them)... SOOOO BEAUTIFUL and Chile, your origin story is so familiar it's making us ALL cry.
This share is soooo generous. Makes you 1 of the Real Ones. Thanks for making all feel just one more human being closer, Sis💕
Excellent video! Thank you! As one who was a school kid in the 70’s and 80’s not much changed with “good” hair, except there were no box braids yet and weaves were clumsy looking amd came in maybe three shades-black, blonde, and brown. Your content has inspired me. I’ve been chemical free for over twenty years but just now learning what to do with my hair and be proud of it. You are a blessing.
Thank you!!! Thank you for explaining short and simply but sooooo beautifully what everyone wants to know when your natural... Why did you do it!!!! Thank you. I will share this video whenever someone has a question about natural hair and why!!
BRAVO Latoya...This video took my breath away in a good way...I cried, I laughed... I salute you always...Myself and my daughter are so blessed to have your videos during our lifetime...You are forever our “sunflower”🌻...We love you and we are forever in your debt! 🖤:)...Sharon
THIS WAS AMAZING!!!!! I hope to be as half of an inspiration that you are. This is the story of our lives and you nailed it sis!!!!
Thank you for this video! I remember the day in 2010 when you took us along with you to the salon to begin your natural hair journey. 🤗
This was so well done! I can tell a lot of time and effort went into this.
This was so touching and beautiful. I just wanted to wrap lil LaToya in a momma hug, comfort her and let her know she was beautiful and it would all be OK. The end, why did I feel a mother's pride, big sister pride? I am so glad that you are fully embracing the woman you've become and the life you have created for yourself ( along with your gorgeous hair , of course!). I truly think this video, in particular, will help so many others as they make their journey, not only with their hair but in loving themselves. Keep up the excellent work!
