Spurs Ball Movement - 15/16

  • The San Antonio Spurs finished the league 3rd in terms of total team assists per game (just behind top ranked Golden State, and the second place Hawks), despite a lot of people saying that their acquisition of LaMarcus Aldridge, and the emergence of Kawhi Leonard’s offense, would lead them to be a more star heavy, iso dominant team.
    For all the failure that this postseason brought, the Spurs were historic. League best defense (BY FAR, tied the all-time best single-season home record in NBA history at 40-1 (shared by 85-86 Celtics, in case you didn’t know), and set an all-time franchise record for wins during a season at 67.
    The Spurs have the luxury of essentially having a playmaker at nearly every position out on the floor at all times, but their 24.5 assists per game as a team aren’t powered by a single individual. Tony Parker leads the team with his 5.3 assist tally, but after he and Manu Ginobili (3.1 apg), 5 players averaged a little over 2 a game, and the next 6 (remember that players have been dropped, picked up, and/or moved) all averaged 1+ per. It really was a team effort. The ball doesn't pop as much as the other video, but it's still fun to watch their offense probe and explore angles and options before ultimately finding a good, verging on great, shot.

    These Spurs teams just always seem to have pieces that fit so perfectly and always get guys who buy into a very open and free slowing system, it's amazing how a lotta times those aren't even plays being called it's just a team of players with sky high basketball IQ and unselfishness, in my opinion there ball movement is better than the Warriors who settle for the three and don't penetrate the lane quite as efficient or effective as the spurs (not to take anything away from the Warriors by any means) .... truly beautiful all around basketball, at both ends of the floor at that

    a shame they seemed to forget this kind of play during the series against OKC, with LA and Kawhi trying to match KD and Westbrook's iso plays

      Its also the matter of saving stamina, this playstyle needs constant moving and will also exhaust you mentally

    • @blinkmeever
      @blinkmeever 3 роки тому +9

      @@yunan9610 15-16 Spurs had the bench power to rotate and keep that energy going. If anything, I think Pop was the one to blame because he seemed to want Leonard to develop and grow so he let him run the offense. Now you look back, that was just foolish and stupid considering Leonard didn’t even stay in SA and Pop pretty much helped him gain valuable experience on the expense of Spurs playoff run. That was supposed to be a great year for the Spurs with lots of firepower and a decent bench and they had what it takes to win the championship but Pop got too caught up with his stupid “experiment” and caused them the series.

      @@blinkmeever it was iso that costed them, but not just only iso, but the spurs team was just too old, the bench gave them energy but was old, same with the starting lineup

    Man to this day still wondered how this team didn’t bring home the chip that yr. I mean timmy, manu & tp were way past their primes already but u can’t take away the fact that they were still stacked from top to bottom. I always felt like they were the better & more experienced team than the warriors that yr despite the warriors 73-9 record, & they could’ve given the cavs a problem since the lebron stopper was still on that team. This was utterly a disappointing season for my spurs despite the franchise record for wins, I know they have all the tools at that time to capture on what could’ve been the team’s 6th 🏆 & timmy’s 6th ring as well, until they played selfish basketball vs the thunder in the playoffs & that cost them everything they worked hard for that yr... Sad 🤦‍♂️😔

    I love how they pass, but sometimes they get so consumed by the drawn up play a wide open guy doesn't take the shot because he is supposed to pass. Mostly it doesn't matter because the other team is so confused, but it still is slightly annoying.

  • @TheBINIBALL
    @TheBINIBALL 4 роки тому

    1:24 why would James Harden go through Aldridge/Dwight instead of around Dwight? I get the extra second may cost you the mid-range shot but I'd rather close out on a potentially lower percentage shot than go through Aldridge who already took Dwight out of the paint and immediately lose the position battle, tailing the guard who already had an easy/clear lane ahead of him.
