    Great video Coach Nick, per par. I could only imagine how greater Kawhi's defense could be if he played during the hand checking era with his length and size.. Scary

      @AZNboi10921 8 років тому +5

      +Le Hairline Werd. He would be another Pippen-esque player. Except I would argue Pippen was a little more athletic in terms of wingspan, speed, and jumping ability. Regardless, both would dominate and pester the offense a great deal.

      ***** Yes that's true. Both are physically gifted to be great defenders and both would be in the top in either era.

      +&1 but pippen was more agile than leonard. even when he was that skinny stick before putting on weight. i think pippen had better handling still, and is lot more scary running the fast break, and it does seem like he had better hops too. hand size wise they are pretty close. people need not to forget pippen has big hands too.
      but offensively leonard have done a better job emulating jordan ( i don't think pippen was even studying jordan's tape when he could just play against jordan in practice). and leonard does seem to be a bit bigger than pippen. and so far this season, leonard's shot selection has been great and i am glad to see intelligent and athletic player like him hitting prime.

    • @popeyeisgood
      @popeyeisgood 8 років тому +1

      ***** i like how you twist it like the 90s is easy to defend. the absence of hand checking rule applied to both end. that means the player on offense can do a lot more to get away. leonard is great but dont twist that out of proportion. the 90s bulls were not far away from now i still have very vivid memory of how great they were defensively. and i have yet to see leonard performing at the level jordan was defensively before pippen improved to share the load. jordan was today's leonard 3x to say the least. super disruptive in team defense situation even when back then zone d was supposed to be forbidden. not to mention a much better lock down defender. both pip and jordan were superior in establishing position and drawing charge compared to leonard.
      it is not fair to say leonard is greater because his career is far from over. pippen in his 4th year starting to become a defensive force as well and it is hard not to look at pippen or jordan in their primes now looking at leonard.
      just be glad that there is a high iq coachable talent like leonard that is improving every year who can also do perimeter defense much better than anyone playing in nba nowaday.

    Im definitely looking forward to the Warriors vs Spurs game. I wanna see how their defense handles Curry this year, because Kawaii has had him figured out in the past

    • @ReCharredSigh
      @ReCharredSigh 8 років тому +5

      +TheVictoryHawk there's one thing that may tilt the odds in the warriors' favor in a potential series between the two. I used the word "MAY," because the spurs are so well-coached, they may have figured out counters already.
      when the clippers beat the spurs last postseason, they used an offensive play called "45" that essentially helped give them a slight offensive edge to win the series. it's basically a semi-transition play that has blake griffin and deandre Jordan running up to 30 feet to essentially give whoever's guarding cp3 a nice sandwich pick, almost like the elevator door play in a pick and roll. that enabled them to get kwahi leonard off of cp3 and not let him hound him (only way out of that play is to switch).
      and coach nick pointed out last postseason that the warriors noticed this play, because they copied it and started to use it themselves; they didn't start to run it until the 2nd round in (after the clippers advanced).
      the reason I say it may be a factor is everybody keeps saying kwahi is going to harass curry 1on1. that may be true, but if so, the warriors can go to that 45 play to get kwahi off of him.

    • @TheVictoryHawk
      @TheVictoryHawk 8 років тому +1

      ReCharredSigh yea i remember they ran that play over and over again last year and it was pretty effective. The the warriors have been trying it a few times this season so maybe they end up going to that...
      Definitely anything that gets Kawhi off Curry is priority number one on offense!

    • @TheVictoryHawk
      @TheVictoryHawk 8 років тому +1

      ***** yea he definitely doesnt have this Curry 2.0 we have this season... But also you cant expect the spurs to play like that every game we have against them, I mean the awrriors shot 9/10 when defended by Kawhi haha

    Kawhi, PG, Butler are the 3 mot effective 2-way players right now. KCP low-key creeping up on them but is still inconsistent on offense. Lebron will always be that guy that's always knocking on the door of being in the top 2-way player discussion but he gets hidden on defense a lot which is a good coaching decision considering the cavs have other guys to put their hearts out in defending the best of the best.

    • @ballinboxer3676

    Can you make a video comparing Kawhi's defensive stats and Pippen's defensive stats, as well as some possesions?

    • @ChromaticTempest
      @ChromaticTempest 8 років тому

      +HyJink$ Steals comparison: Pippen 136 season avg - Leonard 111 season avg. Pretty close with their per game being 2.0 - 1.8. BUT compare blocks... Pippen 56 season avg - Leonard 36. Leonard's best season saw 50 blocks while Pippen's saw 101! Seems like Pippen was WAY better but... if you break it down into per 36 minutes played, Kawhi edges out on steals with .2 more per game and they are dead even on blocks (that includes the current partial season). Something that's not even close tho is their offense. Pippen outscored Leonard by leaps and bounds. Just imagine the effort. On that point alone Scottie was indeed too hottie. But I think Kawhi has it on defense due to one major factor, no hand-checking. Todays league is all about offense so Kawhi's numbers should be weighted a little heavier. Dude's a beast on D.

      Hand checking helps you stay with your man easier, and allows you to contest or disturb the opponent.

    • @CaptBrigGen
      @CaptBrigGen 8 років тому

    • @zacharyst0ne

      +carotidkid3 Probably worse. Almost all the footage in the video shows some usage of modern illegal defense rules. That stuff wouldn't be allowed pre-2000 and was frequently called (I mostly watch games from the 80s-90s). They would still be great but their defensive scheme would be less sophisticated and easier to beat.

    • @ShadowLinkXCJ
      @ShadowLinkXCJ 8 років тому

      +CaptBrigGen it's actually the other way around. More points are made today due to the handchecking rule and less defense played by teams

    great breakdown coach! Finally, a Spurs breakdown. The link to the full breakdown doesn't work though. I get a "Page not found" error when I click the annotation.
    I have a question about the Spurs defense though, why do they have so much trouble with the double high ball screens w/ the clippers? Every time the Clippers run it w/ Jordan and Griffin screening, the Spurs defense breaks down. Then they're forced to do "hack-a-jordan" to slow down the Clippers. What can they do to stop it?

      +TheJoeSewell Its really tough to say. Worst case both teams get hit by injuries and come limping to the playoffs. In part why both team can show their full potential is being healthy. Though if Bogut gets taken out, Ezeli I think can take over that position easily. And the Spurs biggest issue that hasn't reared itself yet is their really thin depth on the perimeter/wings. If Mills goes down they will have someone to play over him but it just won't be the same.

    Golden States defense is just as good if not far better. And the only reason they don't hold teams to under 90ppg is because they play at one of the fastest paces in the NBA, which allows opposing teams get more shots than the teams that the Spurs face. Also, they have played in so many blowouts that teams are essentially playing against their third string for most of the 4th, which has tarnish their point deferential margin. I always considered defense more in terms of point deferential, which is where the golden state starting lineup is leagues ahead.

    • @Allistar123
      @Allistar123 8 років тому +2

      +Aaron Porter not just the Spurs, almost every team has designed their defense to allow mid-range shots while defending the three and interior. The funny thing about the Spurs is that their teams is filled with players that are really good mid-range shooters. It might be Pop just being ahead of the curve but in the playoffs that is the shot that will be the most open and the Spurs are team that can take the most advantage of it.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 8 років тому

      +Aaron Porter Probably because the league as a whole probably sucks at the mid range shot. I know the weird thing with the closer the shot, the higher percentage it gets theoretically. But there are some numbers that support the degrading accuracy of the league average of the long 2-point (16-23 feet). And it doesn't help when a better team can play defense AND can score on you from beyond the arc and inside and get trips to the line.
      I think the Spurs let them take it because unless its someone or teams who are known to get good position to consistently kill you with it, they will rather put the defensive effort to box out or grab the defensive rebound and make do with that possession.

    I think the Spurs will make it to round 2 in the playoffs if they stay healthy and don't face GSW round 1. In fact if they face almost any other team in round 1 it will be something like 4-1 or a sweep. I say round 2 b/c either GSW or Memphis will give them real trouble then. It is conceivable they make it to the semi's. Obviously I don't expect them to hit the finals. I don't care how hot Kawhi is, a playoff ready GSW wins every time. Tony Parker on Steph Curry? It would be a nightmare.

      @Allistar123 8 років тому

      +Matt Ellis and the match-up tends to favor the Spurs. Bucks gave the Warriors because of their length which is exactly what the Spurs have, and the Warriors interior defense is a little soft and it is prime to be exploited by Aldridge and Duncan

    • @MattchuBoiSwag
      @MattchuBoiSwag 8 років тому

      Allistar123 There's 2 ways see this. I agree that the Spurs have the edge in the interior. But Golden State can space the floor. They play with the 2nd highest pace in the league for a reason. Bucks plays the slowest out of everyone in the league. I'm sure it comes down to coaching over anything else. Ezeli, Bogut, and Green can handle Duncan, Aldridge, and West/Diaw... Hopefully. Plus, smallball lineup, either match up or deal with the speed. And speed kills. It'll be a great match up.

      +DoubleAIV Spurs defense is overated actually. They played alot of horrible teams (sixers twice) and held them to 24-30% shooting twice. They lose to all above average teams. (OKC, Raptors, Bulls, Wizards and Pelicans.) Trust me when they play contenders like OKC, Clippers, and Warriors they will always give up over a 100 points. The question is can the spurs score over a 100 points against them teams.
