I rode the bus from Chongqing to Dazu back in 2010. A woman kept staring at me in terror. Then I realized she had never seen a foreigner before. It happens when you get out of the big cities. I met my wife in Chongqing where I worked for a few years. It's an amazing country and am always grateful to have had the experiences I did.

Dazu Grottoes was so remote. It escaped the pillage and destruction of the Mongol armies during the invasion in the Sung Dynasty. The Long men Grottoes was much bigger but most of the smaller stone carvings and buddha heads were stolen during the early 1900s and the Japanese invasion during WW2!

I like everything here in china except the government. This is prejudice, the result of long-term brainwashing by Western regimes. In the 80s and 90s, you would say China was another Myanmar or Laos. All these changes came from the leadership of the Communist Party, right? Does China look like Japan in the 90s? Bullet trains, high-rise buildings in Tokyo, clean cities, convenient life, honest people.

Thank you so much for this accidental promotional piece. 大足/DaZu in Chinese has two obvious meanings, the first can be literally translated to a famous English name, Bigfoot. Given its ancient origin (started from the Tang Dynasty) and rich legend, this may be an easy way to remember this place. However, the name (also from the Tang Dynasty) actually came from the second meaning, all around sufficiency. At 2:17, inscribed atop the gate on black background is the expression that means, all around sufficiency to the world.

Chongqing is a mega-city of 33 million people in China. The Yuzhong district in the center of the city has a cyberpunk urban style due to its very special topography, and there is an attraction called "Hongyadong", which is very similar to the scene portrayed in the Japanese Hayao Miyazaki's manga "A Thousand and One Hidden Searches", and there are also several other places in Chongqing that have been certified as World Natural Heritage Sites by UNESCO: Jinfo Mountain, Dazu Stone Carving, Three Gorges of Yangtze River, and so on. Chongqing has several other UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites: Golden Buddha Mountain, Dazu Rock Carvings, Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, etc. We welcome friends from all over the world to come and visit us
