- Today we say goodbye to Chico, a dog whose tenacity was as boundless as his spirit. The tragedy of this story isn't just that Leishmaniasis claimed another victim, but that even unparalleled willpower and grit couldn't triumph over this devastating disease.
Chico was a fighter, in the most unambiguous sense of the term. When he was first brought into our care, he was already knocking on death's door. But this wasn't merely a story of survival-it was one of transformation. Chico didn't just recover physically; he underwent a spiritual metamorphosis, unfurling like a flower with each sunrise. He moved from being paralyzed by fear to freely circulating around our clinic, sharing fleeting moments of joy and solace with patients, doctors and nurses alike.
Despite round-the-clock care and an outpouring of community support, Chico's health declined sharply this past weekend. We employed every resource, every medical advance at our disposal, but the course of Chico's life was not ours to control. It's a weighty sadness, one that settles like a shroud, dense as granite.
But let's not forget the silver lining here: Chico experienced love, compassion, and dignity, even if just in the twilight of his life. This was made possible by the collective humanity of people who reached out, who prayed, and who donated.
As we mourn Chico, let's also celebrate the indomitable spirit he represented-a spirit that continues to animate our purpose, influencing not just the lives of other animals in distress, but touching the very core of our own human experience. Chico's narrative is more than just a pet obituary; it's a testament to the resilience of life and a call to action for each of us. It underscores the profound impact of collective kindness, and challenges us to not just lament his loss but to be catalyzed by his life.

I’m so very heartbroken and deeply sad but that memorial video was absolutely beautiful! What a wonderful and touching way to memorialize his life and the love and kindness he enjoyed, as you said so beautifully, “in the twilight of his life.” He is now at peace, with God, and thanks to this magnificent organization, that beautiful creature, after a long life of dreadful suffering, got to taste love and joy before he went to the loving arms of his Creator ❤❤❤❤

Too bad it wasn’t caught sooner I, believe he would have made it with all the wonderful medical care he was given :.(, we all had been really rooting for him to survive so he could have the best life at his end !!! Good afternoon Viktor, With tears in my eyes, my heart is breaking over the loss of Chico. He has crossed Rainbow Bridge into Heaven where he is in no more pain. Chico is happy and healthy now. But, he was loved by so many. And he had that wonderful day at the beach, and got to be a rebel, going in the "no dogs" area. He had a family, and he knew it because, as weak as he was, he wagged his adorable little tail for them. And, I'm sure the doctors and Aitana made sure he was not in any pain...
His spirit will always be with us.

As much as my heart hurts and the tears burn my eyes. I am warmed by the thought of Chico sitting on the lap of our Lord Jesus enjoying a wonderful cuddle. All of our precious ones who have gone before us are gathered round to welcome Chico and he has much to tell them of the love he finally received from Viktor and team, the Dr’s and staff and yes from all of us. Chico was loved globally and is still loved. I look forward to a cuddle with him myself when I reach my Heavenly home. (My fur gang will understand and share). I know, I have been a Patreon for Vitkor for like 3 years, and have seen SO many Animal rescues of his..but, for some reason..little Chico has broken my heart. I wanted it SO badly for him. He SO deserved it. I am completely devastated. I will watch this another day..😪❤
No more pain, no more suffering, no one shooting at him, no more diseases, no more fleas, no more shaking in fear, no more hunger, and he is loved. Another sweet dog crossed the Rainbow Bridge . In his short time since Chico was rescued, he did gain some weight, and everyone who saw him fell in love. R.I.P. Chico!

My heart is so broken now. Chico had the love of thousands of people, and if prayers could have saved him he would have thrived. But with all he had endured (and we will never know his entire story), his beautiful little body was too ill and too tired to endure any more. He is now without pain or sickness. He is now running happily on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge with so many others. I donated more to Chico than most others as he touched my heart so much. It was his innocence, his trust, and his love for all who cared for him that made him so beautiful. We love you Chico, and will never forget you. 💔
As I read the words Chico has left us the lump in my throat and the burning of my eyes were uncontrollable. I fell in love with this skinny little dog who was dirty his fur was full of ticks and his little ribs were evident as a true sign of neglect, What really stood out was his cute little ears that truly looked like bat wings. I knew Chico at least now had a chance at a good life. Chico has left us now but not without feeling so much love and support from all the people who knew him in the flesh and from all of us who loved him from the videos. Chico knew what it felt like to be free of nugs and he no longer suffered from hunger. Chico fought hard and so did the team of medical people we all fought for you to stay however God needed you more. Run free little boy run with Hannibal, Mary, Clarita little Cookie, and all the others who left us too soon. Thank you all for all the wonderful medical staff I know they too are heartbroken. Die Jahre der Lieblosigkeit und Grausamkeit haben seinen Körper unrettbar zerstört. Doch seine Seele blühte in der kurzen Zeit, in der anständige Menschen sich um ihn gekümmert haben und ihm ihre Liebe zeigten, nochmals sichtlich auf. Er musste nicht trostlos sterben und durfte wenigstens in seinen letzten Wochen Zuneigung erfahren und er bekam seine Würde zurück. Auch wenn es traurig ist, aber es gibt leider noch viele andere Tiere, die jetzt leiden und denen auch geholfen werden muss. This is the worst news I heard today !!! I wasn't expecting Chico to die, I thought he could be saved... I am crying hard now. Chico was such a wonderful doggy... Why was he left so long to suffer by cruel people before you rescued him Victor. How old was Chico. I loved him so much, I was so happy when he was adopted. His new family must be so sad ! As the tears stream down my face for sweet Chico, my heart is so touched as the footage unveils the transformation from a little boy freezing in fear when carried to the touching shots of him nestling his head against Jairo’s neck, picking up his stuffed animal and trotting to his cage with it, tail wagging and looking delighted. Even when he was obviously not feeling well, his tail wagging when the couple who wanted to adopt him came to visit. He may have lost the battle for his life, it the war to overcome his fear and allow him to taste kindness, gentleness, caring and love was gloriously won because of your unwavering commitment. He left this world cradled in and surrounded by the love that should have filled his life. I truly believe there isn’t another rescue that would have fought so hard for Chico. As I once quoted, in the words of a song from a James Bond movie, “Nobody does it better, makes me feel sad for the rest. Nobody does it half as good as you. Baby you’re the best!” My heart goes out to you in the loss of Chico, and I will continue to celebrate the deep caring that informs your work. Viktor, you and your team really ARE the best. However I want to stress , that his time at the clininc..became his loving home , with your brother he bonded and others ..it’s safe to say he fought , you fought to Savd him but it’s very clear from his time with you a great deal of healing happened to him also. His journey to emotional recovery was evident , joy in life even though he was never 100% ..I think you all reversed the physical trauma he had suffered , the emotional..he was full of love and trust ..the only aspect which could not be overcome , despite the best care , drugs etc was that terrible disease ….perhaps had been chronic for quite some time ..added to the other things ..he body just couldn’t get back that vital balance he needed to carry on the rest of his life ..I think he all taught us something too.his thanks you gift it you like ..my heart is broken ..like many ..so sorry for this loss , and the new adopter ..he bonded with you instantly , in just a few short minutes ..but God has called him home ..to live eternal ..much love from the UK

I just got home from work and just saw this devastating news. My heart is aching and I can only imagine what the staff is going through, I'm so so sorry and thank you for giving him the love that you all do. I got to know Chico from your stories and absolutely fell for him hard. I started giving monthly to this organization because of Chico. May Chico's story be a reminder to all of us that whenever you see an animal suffering, please be that person. Help them. There is always something you can do to help. Thank you.

The Creator has welcomed you with open arms and you are sitting next to him, telling tales of all the kindness and help and hope shown to him by Victor, his team, all the vets and staff and how loved he was. He is very grateful for all the love and affection shown to him in the final stage of his life. They are both watching over you spreading your joy and hope to other abandoned and abused animals.

Oh Chico I'm sobbing over your loss. I will miss your sweet little face and bat wing ears. You had the best care possible but you were just too sick to pull through. Such a sad end to a gentle soul. After the cruel life you endured you finally had people who cared and a family that was ready to love you. It was clear by your wagging tail and how you joyfully followed everyone that the last weeks of your life were the happiest any dog could hope for. These dedicated people gave you a liietimes worth love. Be at peace OTRB where there's no pain, no fear, no hunger, only love.

Now at the ripe old age of 73 years I didn’t think there was anything left to make me cry. Boy was I wrong. Chico was a fighter and a beautiful dog who did not deserve to leave us this way. The vets and everyone else who fought so hard to save Chico are an amazing group of people who I think of every day. Farewell Chico we will never forget you.
