Have you by chance ever heard of Europe? The "socialism" that AOC wants isn't proper Socialism. It is what developed countries have had for years. Free healthcare, free education, government funded housing for unemployed people, those are things my country and other European countries have been doing successfully for years. America is so scarred from the cold war that anything that isn't 100% competitive capitalism equals communism and it is not. Aren't you ashamed that America is one of the only two countries IN THE WORLD without paid maternity leave?
Saera Pom First of all, the United States does have free education and government subsidized housing. You can go to school free in the United States through high school, and the government provides affordable housing. Second of all, free healthcare is only beneficial to people in a certain age group, which I believe you fall into. If you are a young person, free healthcare is amazing and a privilege, but as soon as you reach a certain age, it becomes a nightmare. This is due to the fact that leftist societies much like fascist societies determine worth from potential. As a young person, you have a lot of potential earnings which the government can take in terms of taxes. When you are old, you have exhausted your use to the government and are not a priority. Because of this, it is absurdly difficult to take advantage of free healthcare as an elderly person, as you may have to wait months or even years to get treatment because of your low priority status. In some countries, elderly people are even outright refused treatment because they are too old, expensive, and expendable. Lastly, I agree with you that the United States should have some sort of paid paternity leave. Although it is not currently mandated by a federal law, some states do require it, and many private businesses offer it as well. The United States is taking steps to federally mandate it, and both the Republicans and Democrats want it. The issue is who is going to pay for it. The reason the United States has never had it is ideological. America has a “pull yourself up by the bootstraps” mentality, and people are expected to fund their own care. It has nothing to do with the fact that we are capitalist. I do believe that the American mindset does not apply here however, and the United States should figure something out quickly.

@@dbergs8548 In Austria College Education is free too, as it should be, and in most European countries it is way more affordable than in the US. I have never heard of cases where elderly people get denied healthcare, in Austria it is quite the opposite actually. A lot of elderly people get a paid visit at rehabilitation or wellness centers for around 4 weeks where they get specialized therapy for back or knee problems or special care after surgeries.
In the Philippines where I came from, private secondary schools had a program called "Immersion" where each student is assigned to live with a family in the slums or poor communities for 1 week. Objective of this is 1. To teach students empathy and 2. To teach students how to value what they have. And 3. To teach the students how to help others who are in need. 4. To teach students how to be humble. Americans, especially the youth have NO CLUE how good they have it and they take all the freedom they have for granted. The mere fact that you can openly speak against your own government is freedom at its best. If this is what America is producing? I fear the future.

My wife and I were born into the socialistic system. First hand info for you all. IT DOESN’T WORK! Taxing “rich” people? They just move their money and sometimes themselves. When the government still can’t afford the costs the taxes on the midde class then skyrocket. It’s happening there as I type this. Taxing corporations? They just pass on that cost back to the consumer. In a lot of countries in the EU a lot of people can only work part time because there isn’t enough jobs so they share those jobs.
When most people figure out they get most of their stuff for free they just sit back, play video games and expect the government to take care of them using tax money that had to be earned by someone else. Taking from one person that works just to give to a person that doesn’t is called theft.

Anfangxs We have both toll and tax payer paid roads. Taxes are meant to be used for the good of ALL people equally. Liberals use our tax money to give handouts to people who are here ilegally, making them FEDERAL CRIMINALS (most steal identities to avoid detection as well, another FEDERAL CRIME) this brings in more and more going on the free ride, less and less going for infrastructure and taxpayers. It also attracts them to liberal areas where, through census, gives more numbers in population thus more seats in the congress to support equal representation. This in turn gives them more ower to continue to overburden the US. At some point, other people’s money runs dry through over taxation to support the dead weight, loss of jobs, with illegal monies shipped back to their home countries and in turn shrinks the midde class reducing tax revenues collected.

Jormundyr NIF democratic socialism is great over here in Germany. We only pay round about 70% taxes, officialy its a little bit over 50% but that's just the income tax. Everything we buy has a minimum of 7% tax on it but most of the time it's around 20%. And when we get our rediculous amount of pension which we payed in over our lifetime we have to tax that again. And when we want anything from our health care service we often have to fight for it.
So i can't understand why all of you are against this great socialism...irony off

I had a Russian instructor from Belarus who had described growing up there in the 80s. Usually tuition is what you pay for a class. So, for students, "free college" and "no tuition" is the same thing. But, in all honesty, if the Left is all for that sort of system, they need to start living how they preach. Every single professor that stands to tell their students that socialism is the correct way, and that they shouldn't have to pay for college, needs to no longer charge money for their classes, and then teach for near no income. They think that they can continue their moderately wealthy lives in such a system, when it's just not true. They will have significantly less bills to pay, but significantly less money with which to spend on themselves anyway.
Not to mention, socialism requires a good amount of people volunteering where Americans would just not accept themselves working for money. Can you imagine any of these people advocating for socialism working farming, or factory jobs? They seem way too comfortable showing off their individualism, or living a life that they actually worked toward, to even want to go into a system where they would be obligated to work in such a way that they have no choice or drive. You'll be stuck in your job, with no room for growth, or prospects of working higher up.

They agreed with policies such as a single payer healthcare system, living wage, free college tuition, etc. Which are social democrat policies. I hate using labels though since a lot of people mislabel themselves (Bernie got more of the conservative vote although Clinton was more conservative than him, so clearly a lot of people use the wrong label for themselves). I’m not sure I’d say these people would fall under that category, but a lot of your corporate media such as MSNBC that talks about Russia all day long and not the real issues surely would.

By definition, socialism is a system of collective ownership and management of the means of production and the distribution of goods. Democratic socialism is the same thing except that you elect in whomever you want to be in charge, otherwise there is no difference. Also, no matter what people say, democratic socialism has not existed for a long time (some say it originated back in Roman and Greek times which is a lie) it has only really became prominent in the late, and i mean late, 19th century
