  • Florida’s legislature is sidelining science in science classes. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, the hosts of The Young Turks, give you the judges reasoning. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. tytnetwork.com...

    "State and local legislatures in the United States are experimenting with new ways to target the topics taught in science classes, and it seems to be paying dividends. Florida’s legislature approved a bill on May 5 that would enable residents to challenge what educators teach students. And two other states have already approved non-binding legislation this year urging teachers to embrace ‘academic freedom’ and present the full spectrum of views on evolution and climate change. This would give educators license to treat evolution and intelligent design as equally valid theories, or to present climate change as scientifically contentious.
    “The strategies of creationists have gotten more sophisticated,” says Glenn Branch, deputy director of the National Center for Science Education(NCSE) in Oakland, California. The first academic freedom bills popped up in the early 2000s, but until this year only three had become law: one in Mississippi in 2006, one in Louisiana in 2008 and another in Tennessee in 2012.
    Eleven bills designed to alter science-education standards have been proposed this year across the United States. A handful of those measures have either abandoned the traditional academic freedom model for more roundabout methods, or are using watered-down versions of it.”*

    Someone needs to tell these people that science isn't about perspective. It's about facts.

      Science isn't just about facts its more like deductive methodology in order to understand the Universe.

    • @ShinyBidoof
      @ShinyBidoof 7 років тому +4

      My comment was an attempt to simplify the issues presented in the video. It's true that science is the pursuit of understanding our universe. But in order to understand something from a scientific perspective one needs to approach it without bias (I.E the scientific method). In other words, one focuses on the facts and what those facts tell us about a given subject.
      So, yes, science is a little more complicated than a simple collection of facts, but facts are where you begin with any scientific study. And, ideally, they lead to new, not previously considered, facts.

    • @ShinyBidoof
      @ShinyBidoof 7 років тому +2

      As unlikely as it may seem, I actually agree with the idea of keeping the option for something like a world religions and mythologies class open. the problem is, like you said, the execution of how the subject is presented to the students. The key is to keep the subjects separate. Don't treat religion like it's a substitute for science. Science is about facts and knowledge and how they relate to our universe. Religion is about beliefs and customs and how they have impacted, or were impacted by, various cultures. In the end, I wouldn't want religion in my science classes any more than I want science in my religions and mythologies classes.
      The issue that the video presents is this: instead of presenting the idea of academic freedom as a way of broadening a student's perspective, the people who create laws like the ones in the video use it as an excuse to force their perspective onto students.

      There is a lot in science that is up for discussion and debate. The "facts" in science is the hard data. But beyond that there is a lot of discussion. On climate change, for example, we have data that shows the climate is changing, it has been for over 4 billion years. And we know man plays a role as we do just by simply existing. But, the problem is that we have alarmists that poison the topic. That's no longer facts but a radical viewpoint on the discussion.

I loved Americans for the courage and liberation and self belief and just the balls for standing up to what is right in general day today life. but all I see now is racism and hatred for your own people and disregard for human life. I thought you guys were better honestly I did but all I see now is people relentlessly supporting a man who talked about assaulting women, who believes in bullying with no shred of dignity or class. who makes fun of differently abled citizens. who bans his own media and hosts a country known for being the enemy (is that patriotism?) and a country, majority of which supports him. farewell dear friend I hope your humanity survives.

      Who cares if church attendance is mandatory or not right now? Lots of religious people don't go to church yet they still think that their religion should be taught in public schools. Also, I remember an Arizona politician that did support making church attendance mandatory. If Pence ends up becoming president don't be surprised if the right seriously floats the idea of making mandatory church attendance a reality.

    I live in Mississippi and went to college at a small community college here. It's located in a very small industrial town. I dropped out halfway through my 3 year for a number of reasons. One of them was because I didn't finish my 2nd science credit. This is because my second year science class had me drawing plant cells and coloring them in with colored pencils. This in is a college class. The thing that made me drop the class though was the fact that the teacher would preach during classes. He would denounce science outright and flat out say Jesus was the only way. I hate the education system here in Mississippi. It makes me want to kill myself.

    I went to an Presbyterian private high school. We were taught evolution as the foundation for biology. We were taught the earth is billions of years old in the geology module of our geography classes. We were taught world history that began long, long before the bible and included pre-historical knowledge and ancient civilizations in Asia and the Fertile Crescent. This hatred of science and of proper history is purely an extremist, fundamentalist, dominionist issue among a certain segment of American Evangelicals, particularly Southern Baptists, Pentecostals and Mormons with a legalistic, literalist view of the bible. Mainstream Christian schools respect accurate knowledge and some have actually signed the Clergy Letter Project.

The Bible is not a History or scientific book it is a religious book. It is limited in knowledge because the writers knew nothing about science or how old the earth was. There are some fundamentalists that disagree

    • @alieninthecaribbean
      @alieninthecaribbean 7 років тому +1

      Moon Watcher, if you go to the Clergy Letter Project, you will see a number of Christian denominations who have signed the mandate saying that evolution is VALID science and poses no threat to the spiritual and theological aspects of religion. www.theclergyletterproject.org/
      It was a devout Catholic that put forth the Big Bang Theory. The Pope accepts evolution, an old earth, human history dating back before the bible. Most Anglican, Presbyterian and other denominations do as well.
      The sects that do not are usually dispensationalist, Armageddeon, dominionist, biblical literalist sects such as Southern Baptists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Quiverfull, Pentecostals and other such evangelicals.

      Based on what measurement? The only categories that America is a leading nation in are incarcerated citizens per capita, number of Christians, amount spent on military, and resources consumed per person.
      Maybe 20-30 years ago sure, but you guys have fallen behind. Just look at Europes bullet trains, or Saudi Arabia's building projects. Try going to Tokyo or Hong Kong, it's like visiting the future. You guys keep saying "America is the greatest, most advanced country", but all you've accomplished in the last 20 years is to bicker among yourselves over whether America is conservative or progressive.
      Your education system is ranked among the worst in developed nations. Your infrastructure is crumbling and not keeping pace with your growing population. Your government is so bipartisan it can't accomplish anything. Your media thinks that keeping the nation informed means telling people what they want to hear. Your medical system leaves tens of millions of Americans without health care. Your prison system is built around making money rather than rehabilitation. Your people think that opinion and fact are the same thing, and your president thinks that leading a nation means pitting half the population against the other like a nationwide barfight.
      Quite possibly the worst part is that Americans are all so blindly patriotic that you won't even consider the possibility that America isn't that great anymore. I mean how advanced is a country that applauds ignorance and derides intelligence and logic?

      Arexion5293 no no no no. actually America looks bad already. scientists around the world do not hold evolution with as much of a regard as American "scientists". It's like a religion in the U.S. scientists are censored for questioning it. crap that used to happen in the old days. one Chinese scientist said they can't question the government but can question evolution. while in the U.S. they can question the government but not evolution. If you can't even allow scientific inquisition into the theory it's no longer science. people should be allowed to research and disprove

    • @Arexion5293
      @Arexion5293 7 років тому +1

      I dunno, America's government isn't deliberately trying to harm people with differing views, differing sexual orientations or transgender people. They're not trying to silence different views with force, and the police force is significantly less corrupted, so I'd say America's still the better country.
      I'm not saying America doesn't look bad, I'm just saying it doesn't look nearly as bad as Russia does.

    The whole point of science is that it is evidence based. Evolution and Climate Change are being taught because that is what the evidence says is happening/has happened. The reason creationism isn't taught as science is that there is no evidence for it. Teach it all you want, but put it in as religious studies or philosophy based courses, not as hard science fact.

    • @Fimbulvinter19
      @Fimbulvinter19 7 років тому

      Which is also part of the whole evidence based process for science. You change the theory to fit the evidence when new evidence comes to light that shows the theory has a mistake in it, but it doesn't change the basic point that creationism has no evidence behind it and shouldn't be taught as science. The Pastafarian movement developed out of this very point.

They didn't listen because they support it. To them, I'm damned to Hell because I pointed the situation out. And I'm not exaggerating; they said that to me. I've tried to talk to other students. The only ones that agree with me are those practicing different religions. And they said that it bothers them, but they're used to it. Isn't that sad? Trust me, if I had power I would. I changed the schedule for the school year by talking to the superintendent and petitioning. I tried. However, my school is filled with too many self-righteous people to even get enough signatures to meet with the administration.

      if 80% all work at wall mart or target and 0.1% own investment companies or retail companies that they have worked their behinds off to become successful and then hire those 80% yes they should earn more than the majority. There are less at the top and more at the bottom because so many people give up or just don't try. And as millennial I see this attitude in a lot of them who just believe everything is given to them.

      It should be if you have the dream and the drive, you can achieve anything.
