  • Apparently America's Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has no problem with federal money going to private schools who discriminate. Ana Kasparian, Brett Erlich, and Grace Baldridge, the hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. tytnetwork.com...

"The video of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos confirming that she would allow private schools to receive federal dollars while they blatantly discriminate against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students is simply stunning. Congresswoman Katherine M. Clark, a Democrat from Massachusetts, asked DeVos point blank in a hearing yesterday if she would allow federal funds to go to a school that bans LGBT students or students with gay or lesbian parents, and she used the Lighthouse Christian Academy in Indiana as an example.
DeVos, in an eerily calm manner, said that it would be up to the states to make the decision to allow “parents to make choices” when it comes to putting their kids in a a hostile anti-LGBTQ environment, where lies and distortions that lead to bullying and violence are taught to children about queer people, while receiving federal money in the form of vouchers.”*

I think public schools are the only schools that should be funded by the state. I believe a private religious school has every right to teach what they want, but they shouldn't receive tax payers' money. They should be purely funded by tuition and donations.

I disagree. What is happening here is that parents get vouchers so that they can choose the school that is most appropriate for their children. And if that happens to be a religious school, I would be perfectly fine with that. After all, it is not up to the state to dictate you to which schools your children go, and I also think that freedom of choice should also be available for the poorest in the society. What Betsy DeVos actually proposes is remarkably similar to the Dutch education system, where every school gets equal funding, regardless of the background of the school. The system is accesible for everyone and parents can choose between different types of schools. In the USA this choice is not available for the poorest, they are stuck with a public school, which might teach values that completely contradict the values that the parents want to teach to their children.

This doesn't even make sense. Private schools are "private" because they're NOT publicly-funded (aka government-funded). That's the definition of private vs public. The tuitions at some private schools are higher than putting someone through college... America seriously GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER invest in your education and stop voting against your best interests.

What makes people think the vouchers will cover the gap for all these private schools they THINK their children will attend? The voucher will be a finite amount. The wealthy will merely raise the tuition so only certain people can afford the gap between the voucher amount and tuition. Of course, those schools will have our tax dollars to create a further disparity. We will be giving more money to wealthy families. A private for-profit school with no universal standards will also benefit the wealthier companies that will certainly want to build schools for the rest of us.

  • @emilygahagen

i went to private school and i don't think federal money should go to private schools. if you're mad that you pay taxes but it doesn't go to the school you pay money for, then send your child to public school and problem solved. i went to a less-wealthy catholic high school and we had smart boards in every class room and every kid got laptops, no we didn't have as much as some of the other catholic high schools in st. louis, but we had more than most public schools. the catholic church is loaded and they give money to catholic grade schools in their diocese and give to some high schools that cost less tuition to make up for the lack of funding from the tuition. they're called archdiocesan schools and they're for people who want to send their kids to a catholic school but can't afford the full tuition. private schools are doing fine, at least the catholic ones are bc the catholic church will always back them up if they need more money. also private schools have wealthy people who send their kids there and often get millions in donations a year from the wealthy families, they also get money from alumni that have moved on and become wealthy. trust me, even the poorer private schools don't need government funding.

El Deplorable, there's a big difference between private education and privatized education. I'm in favor of private education funded by individuals where competition produces better results. However, I'm opposed privatized education, meaning the government outsources education to corporations since it would just breed complacency and corruption. I'm opposed to the privatization of anything.

Private schools are private. They can discriminate on any basis they want: race, gender, religion, sexual orientation. It's fine if they do. However, if they do, they should not receive a dime in public money, state or federal period.

hotboy757 so long as they receive zero and I mean ZERO public funds at either the local or federal level, they are private institutions and can discriminate on whatever basis they want. You don't have to like it, but it's the truth. Private institutions can discriminate on whatever basis they want in their membership, not their employees. Country clubs have discriminated on race and religion before and I mean after 1968 when the equal rights laws had been passed. Private schools routinely deny students with certain disabilities because accommodating them would cost too much money. However, these schools also receive some public money, so they get sued. The sad fact is private institutions can set any standards for membership that they want.

Okay, so...if private schools are the answer, then model the public schools after the private schools, but keep them public. Uniforms, small class size, make art and music a part of the curriculum, technology, library and RECESS. Adopt the private school curriculum (minus religion) and drop testing. You can do this in public schools w/out having to redirect their funding to a private school. Also, expect the cost to be around $20K per student (preschool through grade 8) and $40K (high school), unless they have special needs of any kind...then double that amount.

Why does it still matter what your sexual orientation is?. I really thought that was a settled argument. It matters not to me what you do as far as your decisions as an adult and your sexual orientation. It is frankly none of my business. I know what my orientation is. And yours does not matter to me in the least.. It does me no harm. I could care less. It is your business. As mine is to me. But discrimination on sexual preferences does matter to me. It should matter to any right thinking individual. This is like a tempest in a teapot. Why are human beings so damn stupid should be the larger question.

Chow Chow Affluence does not equal better. Ever hear of affluenza? I work in public education and lower SES school districts are much more innovative at having to do more with less. Just because a child was not a "winner" in the ovarian lottery and happens to live in poverty does not mean he or she should have to leave their neighborhood school. Providing more tax dollars to these districts now will reduce future costs of drug treatment, mental health, and incarceration. DeVos and Trump are grossly shortsighted.

Derek Fisher What? Nobody's planting kids to make them think about their sexuality....that's foolish and conspiratorial thinking.
Ask a gay person when they realized they were gay, and they will probably tell you around 5. By the time they hit middle and high school, it's something they already know about themselves, and are ready to start exploring further.
Like their straight counterparts, they want to have a first kiss or first date....and yes they will probably have friends they open up to, that doesn't mean they're trying to turn anyone, or plant sexual seeds, they're just trying to figure themselves out.
Being gay is not a choice you mull over and say, yeah maybe one day... no, you either are, or are not. So don't worry, your kids can't be contaminated or whatever, but they will have to deal with diversity and people who don't share their opinions. Don't shelter them so much that they can't deal with that.

I loathe Betsy DeVos. Her smirk, her evasiveness, her tone of voice, her sense of entitlement, her stupidity....uggh. And I find the idea of taxpayer $$$ going to PRIVATE schools offensive. WTH should I finance someone else’s choice? Those schools have sky-high tuition and wealthy donors, they can stay out of my pockets.

I attended a Christian high school. If you want to send your kids to one, great. But there's a reason why there are public and private schools. If you don't like what the government pays for, you can send your kids to any damn school you like as long as you pay for it. If the government subsidizes private schools, that defeats the purpose. I'm trying to be fair here. My views on Christian schools or private schools in general are irrelevant. Public schools shouldn't be allowed to discriminate. ANY school that gets govt funding shouldn't. If you're a private school that pays for its curriculum off the backs of parents, I don't give a damn what you teach.

Eva, that's a bit of a spin. I have a 6 year old, and I moved to an area based on his school options (public school). I researched, yelped, googled, read reviews, and found a home close by so that my son would get the best education that I could afford. It's your job as a parent to do so, and it has never not been.
Also, if you have proof of blatant discrimination based on any of the factors mentioned in the clip, you can sue the ever-loving shit out of them. That goes for private, public, trade, or any other type of school.

Evan Price I'm not American but I've heard that driving around and shopping for school districts and hiring lawyers costs more than one could afford on a subsistence income, so 50% of your population would be unable to do it. Cutting funding for education is insane, unless you want a society where ignorance is a kind description of it. Look at who the wise forks of the US elected! Your education system is already in crisis. America will lose it's superpower status because of things like this. The twenty-first century is going to leave you in the dust.

Hairball 101 - Christian schools get taxpayer funds. Christians have moral codes. This confrontation fuels the fire for conservatives. Either leave them alone or if it's a big problem cut off tax funds. This issue helps the right wingers more than the left. Do we need this?
