This film was shot here in Spain when "The Samuel Broston Emporium" was having its best moments and the film is indeed very well crafted . It has a good scrip and the acting is just fine. One of the best "Superproduccion" from the 60s. Thanks so much for uploading this film and Greetings from Spain
If something is big, there is not many things that can destroy it from outside. I'm sure asteroid similar to one during dinosaurs is enough for something like the Empire, but these are rare.
IT can be penetrated, infiltrated, by Barbarians and that may be a factor. Of course inner deterioration (corruption, inmorality, etc.) starts the decay. The US has been decaying for not too many years from excesses; now it gets millions os illegal and Third World people and criminals, and that will complete the job, started by excesses and corrupt finance, judiciary, inner state, mediocre and corrupt politicians, etc. So its decay, pushed by commercial and unfair competition from China (slave labor and dumping) will take its toll.
It’s possible to not love these movies. Example I can point out how funny it is that we buy that this an empire that was on the tip of 3 continents an empire known for being proud of its diversity and reach is forever depicted as this world that has very few ppl who aren’t white . Rome always looks so boring Ancient Rome was vibrant and colorful even in its later years. It’s a political movie that’s more like a natzi propaganda film of using Rome to talk about the ideals of the ppl who made it rather than use it as a window to understanding what Rome was.
I disagree, respectfully. Many "old" movies were fluffery, made to make money. Some, yes, were rare gems. Not much has changed. Some modern films are also rare gems. Many are well, just to make. Money.

This is one of the greatest epics ever made, which does not come as much of a surprise, considering the source (Edward Gibbon) and that Anthony Mann sat in the directors chair, the genius who we have to thank for EL CID and so many great James Stewart western including THE NAKED SPUR. A masterpiece, which still does not receive the praise it deserves.
The plot of the movie takes many liberties with history and can't be said to be based on Gibbon or any other history of Rome. Commodus was killed by a wrestler in his bath, for one thing. Marcus Aurelius did not try to sideline his son in succession to the imperial throne. On the contrary, he ignored the tradition of adopting a more qualified person for emperor in favor of his biological son. His daughter Lucilla was married to his adopted brother and co-emperor Lucius Varus who died in 169 CE, likely of the plague. She was then married to one of Marcus's advisors, not the "King of Armenia". Commodus was only 18 when his father died, not the 35 year old man Christopher Plummer portrays. He ruled for 16 years and would have only reached 34 at his death. Lucilla tried to have him killed in 182. The conspiracy failed and she was exiled and later killed. The character Cleander, a real person and head of the Praetorian Guard, was himself killed by order of Commodus during the food riots of 190. Commodus spent most of his time outside of Rome training as a gladiator and letting a group of advisors govern. He appeared in gladiatorial combat numerous times, a disgraceful display as gladiators were not held in high regard at all except a very few skilled ones. He was extremely fit, not the barefoot, decadent middle aged man Plummer portrays. But I do agree, this is a terrific film and one of the last great epic films, all done without computer graphics and digital editing.

08:50-12:10: A breath-taking scene. A lot of history in just a couple of minutes. I will try to break it down. 08:51 Marcus Aurelius: "Welcome, Mithridates. Welcome Petra." Fictional. However, there were at least 22 rulers of 8 Roman era states (Cius, Pontus, Parthia, Commagene, Media Atropatene, Bosporus, Armenia and Iberia) who carried the regnal name Mithridates. Of these 22 rulers, none lived during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. That said, the most famous of the aforementioned namesake was Mithridates VI Eupator. Mithridates VI Eupator (120-63 BC), dubbed as "Mithridates the Great", was the last rule of an independent Pontus. A formidable leader who created the ideology Mithridatism (= protection against poision), he was seen by his contemporaries as the last protector of Hellenic freedom. After his death, Pontus was incorporated into Rome. 09:12 Marcus Aurelius: "Greetings, Costobacus, king of the Omnia." Fictional. 09:29 Marcus Aurelius: "Serverus, proconsul of Judea." 09:44 Marcus Aurelius: "Africa." 09:55 Marcus Aurelius: "Marcellus, friend of Caesar." 10:15 Marcus Aurelius: "Virgilianus, proconsul of Syria." 10:42 Marcus Aurelius: "Pericles of Athens (Greek, Greek, Greek!)." Fictional. However, there was a Pericles of Athens who lived between 495 BC and 429 BC. Pericles, eventually acclaimed as "First Citizen of Athens, was a influential Greek politician and general in the times of the Persian wars. Altough the Roman Republic was already established in 509 BC, their are no known relations between him and Rome. 11:08 Marcus Aurelius: "Rome is honored, Sohamus, that Armenia's king is with us." Refers to Gaius Julius Sohaemus, King of Armenia for two reign (144-161 and 163-181) in a time where the Kingdom of Greater Armenia was indeed a client state of Rome. It was, however, never a Roman province, although Marcus Aurelius had tried many times. The second reign of Sohamus was the result of Lucius Verus himself, who offered him peace terms during the Roman-Parthian War. 11:52 Marcus Aurelius: "Welcome, Pertinax. Welcome, Britannia". Refers to Publius Helvius Pertinax (126-193), son of a freed slave who became an officer in the Roman Army, with a posting in Britannia. In the aftermath of the death of Commodus, he was crowned Caesar for three months during the Year of the Five Emperors.

I always love historical movies. When I see all my favorite actors in a single screen I get goosebumps Alec Guiness,James Mason, Steven Boyd, Christopher Plummer and the lovely Sophia Loren. I think I saw Omar Sheriff in a shot
This is one of the spectacular pictures that we wanted to see at the cinema. When I saw it first time I was a child. But I can't say that this picture is the best of the historical series we were used to watch.

I should have been more observant when the movie started and I missed the introduction; I was thinking during the cremation scene 'wasn't Julius Caesar stabbed to death on the way to the forum'? So of course on closer inspection I find the death of Marcus Aurelius is mentioned in the plot summary. As to why ancient Rome fell apart, perhaps a better saying to sum it up would be: 'An empire begins to die when it makes war on itself'; which if true is more exception than rule. A lot of countries that had civil wars did not collapse because of them.
Agreed Michael - Stephen In Ben Hur out-Hestoned Charlton himself. Also he was fantastic as the 'man in black' in Hannie Caulder, despite having no - NO - speaking parts. And yes - I've tried to dislike Hannie for years but just can't, dunno why but it just works, every rewatch....
The Fall of the roman empire was a great succes. To liberate the slaves, all poor workers, and barbaric violence was fullfilling a dream of the generationen of majority. End of the injustice.
this is the close depiction of Marcus Aurelius which sported beard to which he did. and it is so good to see forces from Roman provinces and Allies with different cultural looks of its soldiers actually answering the call of Caesar which probably was the case. Unlike many new movies and tv shows which shows only pure Roman Legions fighting a campaign.
One of the few really great Classical Movies depicting the Roman Empire! The excellent Movie 'Gladiator', with Russel Crowe, was basically a copy of it. Watch both If you have not already !
The Roman Empire did not actually die. Emperor Constantine moved the centre of the empire to Constantinople (now Istanbul) - the Eastern Roman Empire which in turn became the Byzantine Empire and lasted 1000 years until conquered by the Venetians.
MONUMENTAL ROME, all other empires can just kneel to you and your shocking beauty, might and elegance., city and empire that surpasses everything. No surprise that when Rome collapsed, World immediatelly entered PERIOD OF DARK AGES, we can see here why, it was greatest empire that ever existed
well , the world didnt enter the dark ages - just Europe did... Rome was magnificent but dont forget their entire system of slavery. They wiped out entire societies in france spain britain and balkans... today we just dream about the many great engineering military and philosophical achievements of Rome but it was still a cruel empire like so many others
@@allannakhle8555 yeahhh - the empire ran on slavery.. there were more slaves than roman citizens.. so many societies all over europe africa and middle east were wiped out and enslaved
k s and had it not been rome it would have been some other ancient nation, slavery was rampant everywhere it wasnt just rome but rome was certainly the biggest slavery powerhouse
Hi Unfortunately for us, it immediately morphed into the ' Holy' Roman Empire via Emperor Constantine. Leopards do not change their spots. Still worshiping the Nephilim. Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua
First time watching this film. First thought in my mind at the opening scene, Obi-wan as Caesar. Obi wan was telling Luke about how the empire came about and Caesar talking how the empire will be.
Watching the first half hour of this, you can see that Ridley Scott borrowed a great deal from this film in making Gladiator. Not that this is a bad thing, by any means.
A fantastically amazing epic of death and destruction; I doubt if such a production could be made today. It would cost maybe $1 billion to reproduce it and I think that skill has gone in the shape of the metaverse and worse.
If Cameron got his mitts on it the cost (i.e. waste) would be $2-3 billion resulting in a boring, CGI-ridden snorefest. Welcome to the 21st. century.....
The original is far better than the modern day "Gladiator" movie. It also explains How great Republics that Mimic Rome such as the US will fall, from within if good people don't do something about the corrupt and inept.
'Gladiator' in 1992 shares the same fictionalized premise--Wicked selfish Commodus (or his supporters) kill his wise and peace-loving father and the chosen successor . GIven the success of several other ROman -era epics of that period, it was worth a try. The cast is certainly good.
I think the Director tried to capture some of the essence of Rome. My curse is I know better. The biggest annoying historical anomaly for me was stirrups. Stirrups came much later and revolutionized cavalry. It's like seeing tanks in a civil war movie for me
A lot bonkers mistakes, but they can't all be as be as historically perfect as, say, "Braveheart". But these movies had a style which is all too rare today.
@@stephenh3919 I hope that Braveheart comment was sarcastic! Also, stirrups are a safety measure, and they still use them today in all movies set before they were introduced into Europe, except that now they can CGI them out of existence.
@@Danko_Sekulic Indeed it was sarcastic, but about the film, not toward you. I am aware that stirrups were not introduced in Europe until at least 400 years later, and I agree their inclusion in movies was a safety measure, rather than an inaccuracy. Particularly as they got a small detail like wearing the Ludus on the right-hand side correct. I would be very interested to hear your opinion of "The Last Duel". I was impressed. All the best.

After his death, Pontus was incorporated into Rome.
09:12 Marcus Aurelius: "Greetings, Costobacus, king of the Omnia." Fictional.
09:29 Marcus Aurelius: "Serverus, proconsul of Judea."
09:44 Marcus Aurelius: "Africa."
09:55 Marcus Aurelius: "Marcellus, friend of Caesar."
10:15 Marcus Aurelius: "Virgilianus, proconsul of Syria."
10:42 Marcus Aurelius: "Pericles of Athens (Greek, Greek, Greek!)." Fictional.
Africa! lol
Relax ! It is Only a Movie - NOT a Documentary ! In this scene the only aim was to show the huge Roman Empire !
2:57:22 Tiberius Claudius Pompeianus: Syrian Hero `Livus` in Movie (Wife Annia Aurelia Galeria Lucilla). Villain: Commodus is `Caesar` in Movie.
This movie is one of my all time favorites now.Made more than a half century ago and it’s still much better than roman movies, series in the recent years
Nothing compete's with HBO Rome though
Except for the "Rome" miniseries on HBO of course.
Spectacular movie of ancient history.I enjoyed watching great battle of the chariots and the woman he loved.
I always love historical movies. When I see all my favorite actors in a single screen I get goosebumps Alec Guiness,James Mason, Steven Boyd, Christopher Plummer and the lovely Sophia Loren. I think I saw Omar Sheriff in a shot
I think he was the Armenian king. Not a great part, but in such company any part was good, I think.
@@thomaswinkelmair9717 he meant deputy
James. Mason. Alec. Guinness
Yes. he was there when all the kings and rulers greeted and paid homage to Marcus Aurelius !
Omar Sheriff played the king of Armenia
Eu va multumesc ptr acest film , regizorilor si actori ,
This is one of the spectacular pictures that we wanted to see at the cinema. First of all because the history and the story was intriguing< second because before we could enjoy a great spectacular movie that lasted for long time sitting in a chair of the cinema. When I saw it first time I was a child. But I can't say that this picture is the best of the historical series we were used to watch.
Who are all beleive of achieving *Power* through bribery without caring for welfare of people will definitely end their dynasty at the end 🙏 excellent inspiring movie 👌
Loved this movie. The enormity of it is crazy. So many people.
Omg, what a masterpiece, I really enjoy this movie
1. Good governance and justice are mandatory for nations to survive. 2. If things go bad, good people need to stand against the bad.
Sofia Loren at the pinnacle of her beauty!
Great movie, one of the best epic movies ever made
Not even in the top 10 epics.
@@lampad4549 wrong.Easily in the top 5.
@@lampad4549- Nonsense, it is Easily in the top 10 ! Watch 'Gladiator' and you see why Ridley Scott choose to copy it !

Thanks Flick Vault 🙏. A great gift indeed. I liked the screenplay. Filming of the battles is superb. What a movie the makers have mounted. I am overawed! Actors have lived their roles. And what an ensemble of actors. All my favourite ❤️!
when i see this movie, i think alec guinness role as marcus aurelios functions as a kind of pre-role-model for his Star Wars role as Obi Wan Kenobi.
Your style of presentation makes learning history so interesting. Thank you!!! 🧠✨
one of the best films classics along side ben hur baarrabas nd others when i was young only roman films and biblical used to watch .....coming from Malta ...the biggest roman film being filmed here and being an extra brings me a lot of memories i had it also vhs
I just finished watching Ben Hur I was completely astounded by it am giving this movie a watch
You may like 'El Cid' with Heston too !
The film is GR8. English subtitles would have helped better understanding of the film. Please insert English subtitles as requested. Next time I hope to see the film with English subtitles. I am an Indian (Asia).
Forgot to say, it looks stunning!
Great movie. James Mason is so great in this.
He was one of the greatest actors! Yet, never won an Oscar. He was great in almost all of his movies.
@@expromanticart6491 Indeed. I also loved him in Journey to the Center of the Earth.
And Stephen Boyd who plays Messala in Ben-Hur (1959).
@@mohamamintz5627 - Yes, No one has ever played a death scene as great as Stephen Boyd in 'Ben Hur' !
So beautifully acted..when acting was acting..So well Cinematographed.
Great movie.
Sophia Loren in this era was incredibly beautiful !!
This is what Hollywood called "cast of thousands." Quite an epic, very entertaining.
Movie largely tanked at the box office - and killed the career of Stephen Boyd, which was a shame because he was a fine film actor.
I thought that Boyd acted exceptionally well
Agreed Michael - Stephen In Ben Hur out-Hestoned Charlton himself.
Are you Jewish?
@@truthvidsdotnet6530 It's certainly a very jewish thing to say
😂😂 Rome never fell .
I appreciate the efforts to make this happen. The quality amaze me.
The Fall of Rome: when Ben Hur, Spartacus and El Cid got put in a blender and mixed together!
Love the fact it still has the old school "Intermission" stage at 1:32:22
The analogy with present days is ...shall I say, sad? " There´s is nothing new under the sun".We haven´t learnt anything.
Same Barbar war NWO these days🎉
I think the Forum Romanum-Set built for this movie still holds the record for the largest set ever built.
this is the close depiction of Marcus Aurelius which sported beard to which he did. and it is so good to see forces from Roman provinces and Allies with different cultural looks of its soldiers actually answering the call of Caesar which probably was the case. Unlike many new movies and tv shows which shows only pure Roman Legions fighting a campaign.
Indeed, the Roman Army was made up of many nations and tribes !
thank you for uploading this movie. i love everything about it. greetings from Japan.
A very nice movie. These production bears a heavy historical content which is good for us to get a glimpse of the past.
Great movie. Thanks for uploading. New subscriber here. Love and kisses from the Philippines ❤️🇵🇭.
Thank you, I remember my childhood !
They wiped out entire societies in france spain britain and balkans... today we just dream about the many great engineering military and philosophical achievements of Rome but it was still a cruel empire like so many others
k s Well said! Just ask spartacus what he thought of the Empire hehehehe
Hi
Unfortunately for us, it immediately morphed into the ' Holy' Roman Empire via Emperor Constantine.
40:00 one of the cleaniest wild forests ever seen. No old wood on the ground, no bushes....
No forrest in modern's europe.
True. Sort of like a golf course. Still a great movie.
@@daveroche6522 And filled with diversity and sexual degeneracy.
Yep. exactly Phil. It's right up there with Ben Hur, Spartacus, and the Empire Strikes Back
Watch 'Gladiator' !
The original is far better than the modern day "Gladiator" movie. It also explains How great Republics that Mimic Rome such as the US will fall, from within if good people don't do something about the corrupt and inept.
Unfortunately, the democratization took effect.
This might be the most unsung movie ever! And just about as great as 'Gladiator'.
Absolute drama from the beginning.
Why don't they make movies like this anymore 🤷♂️
Becouse all the great ator's a directors are gone, plus the great scenery of spain.
So make some of that film.
Very old Madrileña abroad.

Great movie !Superb!!Thank you for sharing..!!❤️❤️
'Gladiator' in 1992 shares the same fictionalized premise--Wicked selfish Commodus (or his supporters) kill his wise and peace-loving father and the chosen successor . GIven the success of several other ROman -era epics of that period, it was worth a try. The cast is certainly good.
Thanks for Great hard efforts put to give This movies 🍿
I think the Director tried to capture some of the essence of Rome. My curse is I know better. The biggest annoying historical anomaly for me was stirrups. Stirrups came much later and revolutionized cavalry. It's like seeing tanks in a civil war movie for me
A lot bonkers mistakes, but they can't all be as be as historically perfect as, say, "Braveheart". But these movies had a style which is all too rare today.
@@stephenh3919
I hope that Braveheart comment was sarcastic!
All the best.
for me its pericles, pretty sure he was from earlier period
The ridiculous lighting in the first scene is making it difficult for me to continue despite being an avid fan of Roman History.
A must see movie not just a movie but destined to become one of the greatest for young, old bravo to this movie thanks
It was so nice to hear Sir Alec Guiness' voice again.
He was one of the greatest actors !

Great spectacular movie- huge setting and extras. It's the first time I watched it. Boyd and Loren were brilliant. Not sure Plummer is the type for that role but nevertheless I enjoyed it very much😀
