  • It's always made me a little upset that Warrior Cats glorifies pregnancy as much as it does. Here are my thoughts.

Bluefur was too. She mated with Oakheart despite knowing how kits are born and the fact that she couldn't stay with him, and then gets surprised when she gets pregnant.

I mean... mating is literally never brought up in the first place, but I guess that’s understandable since “kids book” but yeah.. it’s like... they hang around for a bit and suddenly there’s pregnancy, I understand them not bringing up the actual mating but surely the cats would be aware that it would probably happen

The births are actually pretty inaccurate. There can be up to forty minutes between kits, or sometimes even more (that's a problem, though) and it can take 6-12 hours of the cat prepping before she actually goes into labor. She might even stop eating. In the books, the queens are like, "Oh! My kits! They're coming right now!" Cats in real life know for quite a while beforehand when they're gonna give birth.

Okay, okay, here's s wild idea: They introduce a tortoiseshell tom. He loves his mate more than anything else in the entire world and wouldn't leave her for anything. All cats expect them to have kits soon, and when they don't after 12 moons, the Medicine Cat tells him that he may be infertile. The she-cat's parents are miserable since she was their only kit and their only chance to continue their family, so they prompt her to find a new mate, but the she cat reveals that she actually didn't want kits. In the end, the couple stays together and they prove to everyone that you don't need children to be happy while sneaking some real world problems and realism in there since Warriors loves to do that.
Probably never going to happen, but I think it would be cool, especially if pregnancies became less common among important cats after that.

    • @shadeddreamer6864

I personally don't see an issue with Violetshine being pregnant. It's something she wanted and she's been a warrior for a while now. If you're comparing cats and humans, It's no different than a twenty-something year old getting pregnant, which many do now days. And it is not stated that Twigbranch is pregnant. When they say "she looks bigger" her compares her to Squirrelflight, meaning she'd gotten taller and stronger.
And considering these books rely on cats being born so more conflict can arise by cats dying without dwindling down to only a few characters being left. That and the clans kind of need to reproduce to survive. And i'm really getting tired of people comparing the cats to humans. Yes they have human personalities, but their ageing system and laws are completely different from ours. The only thing that makes them "human like" is the personalities.
Clear Sky was nasty dude and his whole thing with Star Flower freaked me out, i'll give ya that one.
With Moth Flight, yeah even I was confused on how old she was supposed to be, but I still enjoyed the book. I really felt for her when she lost Micah and was so happy when it was confirmed she was pregnant, seeing how happy she was at the news. I also thought it was interesting to see how she struggled to balance her duties and, even if i don't approve of the rule, i found it interesting to see how the medcat rule of not having a mate came to be. She did not "casually" decide to get rid of her kids. She was so upset by the decision but felt she had to otherwise her kits wouldn't get the love they deserve because she felt she was an unfit mother and her kits had nearly died several times trying to follow her and get her attention. She was very upset by it, i don't get where you're getting the idea she didn't care.
And maybe it's just because i'm not squeamish but... i really didn't find the birth scenes that graphic.
These books certainly have issues, especially pertaining to pregnancy, but i feel like your points are a bit flimsy.

I agree, I have read a lot of these books and being their wild cats as well and the ageing system is very diffrent from human life I agree, plus they do have a lot of battles in warriors, And I think that moth flight was about a year or so, and if you really wanna compare it to humans a Year old cat is perfectly eleigible to have kits, I haven’t read about twigbranch or anything yet, but I’m sure that It’s completely fine. Thanks for reading. Again this video is very wrong, cat ageing in life is comepletely unlike humans.

This is what confuses me. Leafpool had her children, and when Crowfeather found out that they were his kits, he was bewildered. Seems like most toms in this series forget they even mated with the shecats. Ohh nah, they mate each other just for fun. Another thing is, is that Brambleclaw was delighted to hear Squirrelflight gave birth to three of his kits. When he found out they weren’t his, he was also shocked. But man, Brambleclaw, you gotta mate with a shecat to get kittens. He obviously never mated with Squirrelflight so why isn’t he thinking, where in the name of StarClan did these kits come from?! *Ah, Warriors logic.*

As someone who's study vet med, the birth scenes could've been much worse. I think the constant flow of kits is needed. It also helps to show how the clan is doing "economically" when a clan has no kits and the cats comment on it, its always in a negative light. When it's full of kits the clan is seen as healthy and in a good space. Usually.

You know what really bothers me about pregnancy in warriors books?
So many unwanted pregnancies, like most of plots revolwes around cats born as a mistake or something. Why can't we have it the other way around ? Like, cats wanting to have kits REALLY REALLY BADLY but beeing unable to become parents? And their struggle with that, maybe even thinkng about changing mates, because of their dream, but then realising that they love each other to much for that and adopting some kits or just helping rise other cats babies? (Like Dako's CopperCloud?) I mean it makes it look like having kids is like a curse in this universe and something everyone should avoid unless you're a background character. I get it, yes it is a big thing and might be a problem when you are irresposoble, or not ready but come one, EVERY SINGLE SERIES IN WARIORS HAS AT LEAST ONE UNWANTED PREGNANCY and its conceqences.
And I don't think this birth scenes are graphic, I mean death scenes are far worse in theese books, and many kids have pets that give birth in real life. It's just life. I was really happy when as a kid I've seen a real horse birth in The Saddle Club episode, I was excited not grossed out and it was shown in the tv series itself not just described (understandable as the entire series rewolved around horse riding and breeding you know, for horse lovers) but maybe I am just weird.

Yeah, no, I don't agree on that one. You can't use the apparent maturity of cats to judge on how old they are. You can be very old but very immature and vise versa. Maturity doesn't mean a thing. It's more likely the Erin consider the cats as adults when they become warriors. And it's not like they've been made pregnant the day they become warriors.

All I want is one she-cat. Just one. Who isn't a medicine cat, and doesn't have kits or a mate. One main series she-cat. Please. Harper Collins please. Our only beacon of hope is Heatherstar from Tallstar's Revenge. We did have Ivypool, but then she had kits with Lionblaze's son. Which is just.... Weird. She was the one cat who was both a warrior, and uninterested in kits or a mate. Then she had babies with a close relative. Not even a distant relative. A close one. There was a whole arc about how she is related to Firestar, and so is her sister, and Lionblaze and Jayfeather. Why. Why was this needed? I mean we had Hazeltail and Mousefur and we have Cherryfall. But they are all background characters, so background character-y that Hazeltail got the dreaded death by greencough between books. And all Cherryfall ever did was apprentice Sparkpelt, which makes me think that maybe she might be of more importance later, but still. Why. Why. Why.

I kind of disagree. I feel like warrior cats is a slight mix of realism and a chunk fantasy. I mean the way they age is still like real life cats. I know people don’t like it because of the anthro/human like qualities they have but they still age like cats not humans. Also (in my experience) the books are read by kids who are around that age where they learn about birth anyway in school. By the time I heard about warrior cats I was in middle school I know everyone’s experience with the books will be different though.

  • @kingikizu
    @kingikizu 5 років тому +102

I have only read Warriors to halfway through The Omen of the Stars (because the latest book that has been translated to my mothertongue is The Last Hope and i haven’t even gotten around to read Sign of the Moon yet) but i’m going to respond to this nevertheless.
Honestly, I think that there’s little to no issue with young cats in Warriors being pregnant. While they’re anthropomorphic to some extent, they’re basically treated as adults when they become warriors or medicine cats. Even if the characters who got pregnant were not emotionally the most mature or were incompetent in their tasks, if they’re warriors, they’re basically adults, based on how they’re treated among the other clan cats and based on the fact that cats in real life aren’t considered kittens anymore when they get 1 year old. I see no issue in warriors or medicine cats who get pregnant when they’re still young adults and not emotionally as mature as older warriors, because they’re adults. Unexperienced young adult cat getting pregnant and having to take care of her duties as a warrior and her kits at the same time could potentially just cause more drama in the series, and that’s a good thing. Maybe her clanmates will think she just became pregnant because she thinks being a warrior is too much work for her and that she only wants to be lazily laying around in the nursery. Maybe her kits grow up with an unexperienced, possibly even straight up unintentially bad mother figure and have issues in the future because of it. Maybe she decides that she’s just not ready for raising kits and dumps them to someone else or to another clan. Many possibilities for different plot points!
With the main characters being bland and having little to no personality and that being a good thing, i have to disagree. I think one of the biggest faults in the whole series is protagonists being so bland that they could be replaced by any other character and there would be no difference. A character can be relatable and still have various, defining personality traits. It’s kinda lazy to just make a bland character ’’just so the reader could relate’’. Also, aren’t all the protagonists in main Warriors series kits at the beginning?
Of course pregnancy in real life is a big deal. But these are books. If an unexperienced young adult cat in Warriors gets pregnant, it creates more drama and situations than an experienced older adult cat getting pregnant, because the young adult cat is unexperienced.. Not everything has to be ’’this should be done like this in real life’’. Warriors shouldn’t be the thing that teaches life lessons to kids. It’s about cats killing each other and trying to survive in the wilderness. I doubt any kid starts thinking ’’oh i should also get pregnant when i’m a young adult even if i was unexperienced in life!’’ just because a cat in a book did so. Also Spiderleg and Daisy had kits. I doubt they did that to announce everyone they were in love. Wasn’t it heavily implied to be a one night stand?
So, Moth Flight gets pregnant when she’s a young adult medicine cat. Also, i think Raven Pelt isn’t saying ’’shes too young to know about having kits’’, i think it’s more of a ’’i think she’s not experienced enough to know how to raise kits’’. I was talking about drama before, and i think that Moth Flight sending her kits away because she thinks they’re getting in the way of her medicine cat duties is a great plot point. It brings drama. Dramatic things and plot twists keep the plot alive. Warriors is here to tell a story, not to teach you what to do if you become a doctor and have kids who are getting in the way of your job. The fact that she doesn’t care could be bad writing of emotional stuff or just her not caring. The characters in Warriors aren’t always the most emotional. It makes the characters bland. Squirrelflight told Ashfur she couldn’t be hurt by him killing Jayfeather, Lionblaze and Hollyleaf, because they weren’t her kits but her sisters’ kits. That’s kinda just how emotional stuff works in Warriors, even if it was bland.
Kids book include serious topics sometimes. Generally, kids that are old enough to read don’t really like media in which nothing serious ever happens. I loved horror stuff when i was a little kid. I hated stuff that was just happy fluff with nothing serious ever happening, even though i liked cute and positive things too.
You’re bringing Percy Jackson into this, showing us the cover of the Lightning Thief. The characters in the Lightning Thief are like 12 and in the latest books they’re 17. They’re kids/teenagers. Not adults. In Warriors, warriors and medicine cats are adults. Not kids or teenagers. Adults. Adults can get pregnant. We know for sure that in Warriors, the aging of the cats is very similar to real cats. Kits are less than a half a year old kittens. Apprentices are older kittens. Warriors are adults. There are no 40 year old cats in Warriors, because cat’s don’t live that long. Mousefur was considered an elder at the age of 10, and in real life, 10 year old feral cat would definitely be considered old. The aging of the cats is so clearly very similar to real life that i honestly am baffled that you don’t seem to notice it in the books. That sounded mean, and i’m sorry, but honestly. I have nothing against you, but this just so clear.
Kids know about pregnancy but in general kids who can read aren’t that interested in it. They don’t read Warriors just to read about pregnant cats. They read it because they think it’s interesting to read about feral cats surviving in the wild. And how do you think they should be bringing new kit characters to the books? Why would they not tell the reader that a certain cat is pregnant? It’s not wise to just say ’’oh a new kit, where did this come from? Cats don’t get pregnant haha no sir!!’’. Cats kill each other in these books. Cats are fairly realistic in these books (they for example hunt, get pregnant, smell the air for prey and mark their borders). It would be silly to just not include pregnancy in Warriors. That’s how new kits are born to the clans. That’s how we get new kit protagonists for future books.
Kids know about murder being a thing, too, and usually know something about mental illness too. Trust me, if we’re going to just erase topics of mental illness from kids books, it could potentially make mentally ill kids feel more alone. I wish there was more kids books in which mental illness is addressed. Maybe i wouldn’t have felt so alone as a kid with only a little knowledge on mental health. Censoring serious topics from kids books is dumb. Life isn’t always fun and positive and rainbows. Sometimes people have issues. Sometimes murder and violence happens. Sometimes pregnancy happens. Serious things have always been a part of kids books.
Cats get kinda high on catmint. Yeah. My cat does that too. Catmint isn’t harmful to cats. Every kid knows what catmint is and that it makes cats ’’high’’.
Making random side cats main characters suddenly is kind of a weird move. It’s kind of like making Connor and Travis suddenly main characters in Percy Jackson. They’ve always been sidecharacters. Making them more important characters wouldn’t be too weird, but making them protagonists would be. That’s how writing kinda works.
Protagonists being kits of characters you already usually know and love is a good way to continue the family line of the old characters and you can also see the kit protagonist grow to be an adult warrior and see the development right from the beginning. Also the parents of the main character are usually somewhat important characters as well if they were the previous protagonists, so you can see how they’re doing now. It’s a smart move.
Kids aren’t going to be traumatized by reading about cat giving birth in detail. Why would you censor that? There are kids who have seen or helped a cat give birth. It’s not that deep fam. Remember when in the Dreamworks movie Spirit, the horse mom gave birth to Spirit? Is that something that you think shouldn’t have been included as well?
Yeah, lowkey graphic description of cat giving birth. A bit of graphic violence etc in kids books is normal. Kids usually don’t care. It’s not a big deal.
’’No other book would get into detail’’ what? I mean, maybe in case of birth scenes, because there aren’t many kids books in which characters give birth, but in case of violence, even kids book can get kinda graphic. And you have said that you don’t like violence in Warriors either. So, did you only read Warriors as a kid, or just somehow didn’t stumble along other books in which violence is also a thing?
Not every relationship is good. That happens. Kids know it. Nothing new here.
Warriors is not that child friendly? What? Of course it is! It’s pretty standard lowkey edgy kids book material.
Pregnancy adds to the story because new kits to protagonists and good plot flow. Firestar and Sandstorm have Squirrelflight and Leafpool, who are interesting partly because they’re the kits of former main characters.
    And that’s about it.

I just really need characters who don't have kits. That's all I want. It gets boring having all the main characters be direct descendants of Firestar or Tigerstar. It was interesting, but we just need to drop it at some point and start fresh. Once Firestar died we sort of got that, but idk. I have a whole plot that I want to happen where the Clans dissasemble and most of them die off, and then the few that are left join together with an improved society without StarClan, where the Clans are united. (There's a lot more detail to this idea but I really want it to happen.) That got off-topic though. I just want there to be several main characters who don't have mates or don't have kits, or both. It's an annoying pattern at this point. I need it to mix up a little. I agree with some of your comment, but I also agree with Akira on a few points.

Honestly, when a protagonist's arc is over, I feel that it would be a whole lot better to let a more background character take the lead in the series. This would further add to an already existing cat's character, and expand on events that have already occurred from their perspective.
I mean, that would be so cool; to have a character we are all vaguely familiar with already expanded even deeper and their personality's and life given a heck ton more depth would be so interesting to read. Not to mention it would bring so much love to a character that was essentially ignored earlier and used as a plot device as nothing more than to go on patrols and to simply exist.
This also means that the Erins wouldn't have to take up as much time trying to create a character, since said cat already exists! In addition to this, the writers would also have more time to work on the story line as well, leaving a more believable story to be told.

BEFORE YOU READ: My point is to say that Adult Topics are okay for the age range that Warriors is marketed to, and that this stuff should be introduced at around that age range, as they are starting to hit puberty and such and should know about it.
I feel as if the pregnancy is perfectly fine. I imagine Twigbranch and Violetshine being around 20 - 25, which is considered young, and are blatantly acting similar to people around that age group. The whole Moth flight thing is about Teen Pregnancy and adoption, which is a topic that should be touched upon, so its completely fine to me. In my own book,I add Suicide, Drug Abuse, Parental loss, and knowledge of power and questioning the social norms, and ive been told that my warriors story is perfectly fine. I even have a character get burned alive and Milky's father Bumblestar(Stripe) is pressureed into suicide, and I've been told that its all fine. This ties in as saying that what i mentioned here is considered okay for audiences around 5 - 8 grade level (The Warriors age grouping), and i feel as if describing birth and teen pregnancy is frequently shown in books in the same level, and if the gorey stuff I include in my book is considered passing, Im sure there isn't anything wrong with the Teen Pregnancy. Ive heard from many that they are fine with a topic like this, so I feel as if its okay for the books to have that.

I see it as this... they’re cats. Animals don’t have a concept of marriage or any other human concept. The only reason they are given so human qualities is so the reader can understand what’s happening. They’re not walking on two legs and wearing clothes like some Disney animals. (Speaking of human concepts. If that’s the case, I believe the Lion King would be guilty of incest. Following animal logic/Lion pride behavior, Simba and Nala should be cousins...) Animals don’t have and don’t think of consequences like people do. The series can get dark, obviously. The pregnancy thing does make sense for cats... have you ever met an unfixed she cat, and had a Tom wandering the neighborhood/county? Cats can reproduce like crazy if not fixed. (I do think the capture and release idea would be interesting, but imagine trying to trap a bunch of cats... one of the most elusive creatures there is.) they’re displaying cat relationships... not humans. I do think animals grow attached to their mates, but not all animals. Some mate for life and have a deep bond, but I have not seen this in cats, and not many dogs. I don’t believe that the writers want them to act strictly human. Just enough for the reader to understand what is going on. If someone doesn’t like the way the books go, then just write a review and don’t read anymore. It isn’t for everyone, and if someone asks about it for a kid, don’t be rude, but you can give what you honestly think. There is nothing meant for everybody, because not everybody is going to like or agree with the same exact things. Sadly, my book set was stolen during a robbery, and I could not finish them all. I did enjoy what I did get to read though. Not the best series, but to me it was a decent one.

While I understand your point there, most of the cats that are shown pregnant now (like Violetshine for example) aren't...adults. Or, in universe aren't. Violetshine had became a warrior not even a whole year yet from what we know, and we, as the viewers, didn't see much interactions with her and Tree (pulling a show, not tell). She ends up pregnant because...she had a few positive interactions with Tree so that means they are now a thing?
If that's the case...than that is like saying "hey, you just got out of high school, maybe not even...remember that kid you talked to and had some fun times with. Time to go and make a family with them!"
Or how about Twigbranch and Finleap? If Twigbranch really IS pregnant, than that is a really bad message to give to someone at a young age.
All the young cats now are having kits roughly around High School time if they were humans. That...isn't something I feel they should be reading about in their Cat Fantasy books.

Anthropomorphism is quite a broad term when referring to 'anthropomorphic animals'. There are no guidelines or rules to set in place how many hybridized human traits can be mixed in with a generally animal character. The Erins never specified how mating age was to be laid out, and without any proper proof, facts and framework you cannot straight away claim that it is wrong for a cat to be pregnant at said age in the Warriors series. Plus, marriage and youthful pregnancy, however stated, is never perfect. Abusive relationships and bad choices exist, and Warriors captures that in certain points in the series. Plus, for every character to make the right decision when in a relationship would make them somewhat shallow.
I'd also like to cover that your review was also strictly opinionated, as whether pregnancy is an adult topic is very strongly debatable. Mind you, most kids learn about pregnancy at a younger age. I've witnessed my cat give birth when I was 6 or 7 years old while I had complete knowledge, and I'm sure millions of other kids have seen/heard of situations like that, if at an even younger age. With all that, I'd have to say I disagree with your overall viewpoint.

Not that your points are invalid, because I do agree with some of them, but Warriors is only marketed as a children's book franchise because talking cats don't really fall into any other demographic. It's true that unwanted pregnancies in these books are getting old, but none of these cats are sterile and it would be weird for a huge shortage of queens and kits to start. Cats grow up fast, and what with all the other clans starting battles, I feel like a clan would depend on relatively young pregnancies. I don't personally support it, but they might. Also the graphic nature of pregnancy and birth is a part of life and kids can live with it.

I would just like to say that, in terms of how graphic the actual wounds, deaths, illnesses, and various other graphic portions of Warriors are, the birth scenes are actually fairly tame. They don’t go into extreme detail, only generally describing the newborn kits as being wet and the contractions as a similar visual to the cat in labor flexing their stomach muscles. In reality, newborn kits are generally extremely bloody looking and slimy, with the amniotic fluid being more goody than simply water. Also, there is an incredibly noticeable and pungent smell that comes with birth, and nothing like this is even remotely described in the books. While I do feel like the pregnancy in the books can be somewhat over-frequent, it’s far from being too graphic. Childbirth is practically the most natural part of life that there can be. Literally every living creature goes through it in some way, and it’s one of the few things that’s been happening to humans for thousands of not millions of years. If anything, the frequency and detail that is pregnancy and birth in Warriors can somewhat help to normalize these topics for kids, helping them to grasp a more mature understanding earlier than they might otherwise.
That was really long, but it was just something I felt like bringing up. I’ve had multiple cats of mine give birth to kittens, one had them in my closet, and I’ve witnessed human births as well and I feel like they shouldn’t be treated or viewed as something gross or disgusting, even if you’re a guy.

I've read it since 5th grade. I was comfortable with the pregnancies, I believe it might be because my mom was pregnant a lot when I was a child and I was pretty familiar with the concept of birth. I just never thought much about it, like, you fall in love, have kits.

While I agree on some of the points, I personally didn't see an issue with the way that cat birth was described. Honestly, I feel like it opens up a good teaching moment, as a curious kid may pick up the book, read this and later ask their parents about child birth. It normalizes a subject that tends to get glossed over. I do agree though that pregnancy does get thrown around willy nilly.

I think into the wild got it right. Just: this cat had kits! Yay! Let's visit them and welcome them to the clan!
Not: literally the entire birth in words.

I don’t know I can’t agree with this video. I think the books are written for a more mature audience but unfortunately are marketed towards children which are two different things. Teenage pregnancy, drug abuse and unwanted pregnancy are very real issues that I can see translate into this story of humanized cats. However I do agree that it’s an annoying, overused plot device that ruins perfectly good characters. Not every character has to have kits and it’s a really lazy grasp at writing drama most of the time.

I checked the fandom wiki and didn't find any evidence of TwigBranch actually expecting kits. The quote might've referred to something else or the writers forgot the idea.

My mini rant is Umm... This is warrior cats. The entire 5 series (and side books) revolve around them being wild cats. And as everyone is saying there is A LOT of death. Therefore they need a lot of kits. Also, about how the main characters are always very young allow her to uphold a storyline without worrying about the cats getting unreasonably old and having 33 year old(cat years) wandering around.

I think the most frustrating thing about pregnancy is it happens to important characters and the longer the series goes, the more pregnant cats there are, then the more background characters/clan members so deaths are more like a relief than an actual feeling. I still mourn Runningwind/Sootfur/Rainwhisker because, though they were minor, they couldn't go an entire series without being mentioned and I wouldn't notice. There are too many cats!
