The Rise And Fall Of Pac-Man: What Happened To The Pac-Man Series Ft. Tim Crist (Totally Obsessed)

- The Pac-Man series is one of my favorite series out there. Being one of if not THE MOST iconic game turned Pac-Man into a franchise. There were many great games. The Pac-Man World Trilogy, Championship Edition, and even the Mario/Pac-Man crossover games being the Mario Kart: Arcade GP series, remain stellar games. Pac-Man was almost on the same level as Mario. Now, the series is designated only to merchandise and stale games similar to the original. How did this happen? This documentary covers the start of the Pac-Man series, the rise, and then the fall. Joining us is Tim "Shoebox" Crist who is famous for his appearance on Totally Obsessed. We have determined what caused the decline, as well as how the series can get back up.
Make sure to check out Tim's music group The Worm Quartet! Pac-Man Is 40 And So Should You is a modern take on a classic song. Special thanks to KNK Media for the amazing art seen here!
Hi, I'm the Pac-Man guy of moderate legend. I've tried to say stuff here, but every time I've tried to post a comment, UA-cam has immediately deleted it. Let's see if this iteration of my attempted comment actually makes it into existence!
Anyway, thanks for all the kind comments! And thanks to Demeech for coaxing me into rambling about Pac-Man in front of a camera, which I would of course never do otherwise!
May fruit appear before thee,
Tim =ShoEboX= Crist
Oo, that comment actually stuck! Neat! Anyway, let's try a link this time and see if I'm allowed to post those! The song at the end of this thing (which some of you have said very nice things about, thanks!) is actually from an EP I put out (under the name Worm Quartet) earlier this year called "The Pac-Man EP." It's available for streaming in all the typical streamholes (It's listed as "The Pac-Man Assemblage Assortment Thingy of Selections That Plays Extendedly" in most streaming services because the powers-that-be wouldn't let me call it an EP for what I'm sure are very logical and reasonable reasons) and also available on CD, cassette, and 180G Pac-Man-colored vinyl at wormquartet.bandcamp.com/album/the-pac-man-ep
Yes! The one and only Tim beat UA-cam! Great to have you for the video, as nobody is more qualified than you to talk about Pac-Man! Really enjoyed the discussions with you as well!
Just passing by to say you're awesome man! Keep rocking! :)

There’s been many ups and downs, but the most important thing is that there’s still Pac-dots in the maze
*Half-hundredth*
Lest we forget the ending of Pac-Man World 2 where the cutest dog imaginable ate a bunch of power pellets inside his cute little dog bowl so he could give the four ghosts (especially Pinky for being a yandere… by throwing snowballs at Pac-Man which is a common way for annoying young women to spite their ex-boyfriends for forgetting their dates and giving them gaslighting apologies at the end, but Pac-Man was still at his best, even for him, in Pac-Man World 1, 2 & Rally for home consoles) the karma they deserve (which is to die in his digestion… oh wait, they are eternal! Then never mind)!

@@Demeech Am I the only one who thinks teen sitcoms have low (albeit overrated) standards, especially the ones by Nickelodeon (Nickcoms, re: Dan “Get in the Van” Schneider’s Bakery) standards because they have more of a canned light track (and negative teen stereotypes) than actual substance?!)
The Suite Life on Deck starring Debby Ryan as a misandrist is no exception, but like Insatiable, the future Pac-Man movie ought to do her justice as Miru from P&P with no change in her design (except for maybe a body with thick thighs, a big round booty and maybe a tube top and miniskirt).
I feel like you comment on every pac man video like ever
Namco should really make pacman word 4 so that the series can comeback in a great way, just like crash bandicoot came back whit the insane trilogy, team racing nitro field and crash 4 is't about time
While I don't want World 4, I'd like to see them do more with the story & lore beyond the gameplay of The Maze Games.

It's killing me that whoever was playing Super Pac-Man in those videos NEVER used turbo speed in super mode.
I was lol. It's difficult to play the game with a nunchuck or D-Pad. A joystick is the way to go.
Wait, what???
It was only from this comment that I learned that you can press a button to make super pacman go faster!

Well the thing is, the turbo speed was nerfed when Super Pac-Man was brought over to the states.

The wait was definitely worth it! I’ll admit that it was interesting seeing the special guest, but the inclusion makes it one of the best segments of the video.
I always did see 2000s Pac-Man as an interesting time for him, so I fully hope that he can recover, and get back on the spot soon.
Tim is great. Definitely a wonderful guest to have and he's more than welcome on the channel anytime.
You madman, you actually got Tim Crist on for this. Great video though, really worth the wait.
As for what I would do to save Pac-Man, maybe a collection of all 3 Pac-Man World games with enhanced visuals and quality of life improvements, like Super Mario 3D All-Stars but done right. Maybe even Pac-Man World 4 or a Pac-Man World reboot or reimagining. Basically I want Namco to do something that isn’t rereleasing old arcade titles or putting spins on them, although Pac-Man Museum + is looking great and I might actually pick it up when it comes out.
Pac-Man Musuem Plus is definitely great despite it being a collection of classic games. That's because most games have never been re-released.
Tim is great! He loves the series and has some great ideas. He's more than welcome to be on the channel anytime.
@@Demeech btw, I’m really happy you brought up Pac-Man World Rally. It was known simply as Pac-Man Rally to me cause I live in the UK. It was one of my favourite childhood games on the PS2 and it’s a shame barely anybody talks about it.
Coming back to this after Pac-Man World Re-Pac was revealed is surreal
I know, right?
I'm a pretty causal fan of Pac-Man. I mostly know him from the Plug & Play, as well as messing around with old Pac-Man/Ms. Pac-Man arcades around our area. But it's interesting how much depth there is to his history.
It eerily reminds me a lot of Sonic... Between being too experimental at times, neglecting its 3D series, pushing out a reboot no one wanted, and overrelying on nostalgia.
This was a good watch! 👍
"overrelying on nostalgia"
Might as well throw Mario into the mix
But even that reboot does have its fans and can generate some really memorable moments.
I hope one day, Bandai Namco makes a HD remake of Pac Man World or something like an open world Pac Man game.
This aged well
@SkarmoryVEVO as of this comment they are still in development and I'm unsure of how i think because there looks like kart raising in it for some reason.
Already done. It's called Pac-Man World Re-Pac. I hope they make remakes of the second 2 games as well. I'd appreciate it!
This was well worth the wait, Demeech! Definitely one of my new favorites from your channel.

Small world! I'm also 22 and was introduced to the original PAC-MAN via that same Jakks Pacific plug & play unit! It just goes to show how popular those things were back in the early 2000s when we were little.
Great job and it was well worth the wait!
Excellent video man!! You said it all well, and presented it in a fun manner. very well done!
Great video, Demeech! And happy birthday!
We all had bad first impressions about Tim Crist, and assumed he takes Pac-Man Fever to unhealthy levels, but he actually seems like a neat guy, and was probably just acting totally obsessed for the show's ratings and such.
And as someone who has a similar liking toward Tamagotchi (I'm surprised the Pac-Man Tamagotchi was never mentioned in this video), I mostly blame Bandai for Pac-Man's demotion. They instigated what would be a merger with Namco and thus are responsible for not maximizing Pac-Man's potential, instead pouring that kind of budget into their precious Shonen Jump licenses. Tamagotchi and, to an extent, Digimon have dealt with hindered opportunities for world-building and global appreciation since their inception, and the Namco merger just added sufferers of Bandai's high pedestal to licenses.
Don't worry, Tim will probably poke his head in here soon enough. He linked this one to me through FB.
I was gonna bring up the Pac-Man Tamagotchi released last year. That's the only cool merchandise released within the past few years.
Tim is great. He exaggerated his obsession for the show, but some things were actually true.
@@Demeech D'awwww, thanks.
And what about the S.H.Figuarts multi-piece figure thing? And the playable Tiny Arcade thing with the light-up marquee? I guess that one was a while ago by now...
@@autobotstarscream765 Hopefully not ever. Pac-Man's stepped back into the limelight with World Re-Pac. Let us enjoy our moment of glory.
If you want a direct Shōnen Jump x Bandai Namco crossover so badly, preorder Choppertchi (One Piece x Tamagotchi Nano) or the One Piece TamaSma Card for Tamagotchi Smart. It'll convince Bandai Namco to invest even more on turning Tamagotchi into the next Lego and completely ignore doing anything related to the 2009-2015 anime, be it a complete English dub or a revival with Tamagotchis from the M!X era and onward.
Damn, VH1 really did Tim Crist (and everyone else on that show like the Ninja Turtle girl) dirty.
Hey, I’m from nearly a year into the future and Pac-Man World just got an HD remake! And it’s awesome!!!
This might be one of your if not best videos to date
So true!
Pac man world 2 was so fun as a kid!
It’s *so* fun for kids and adults alike!
Well made video mate looking forward to finish watching this tomorrow!
Happy Birthday, Demeech! Great Video and it would be cool to see a Pac-Man World Collection, with enhanced visuals!
Honestly, though, I do think that even 2 decades later, the graphics, soundtracks, characters (especially their designs and Pac-Man’s abilities) and platforming hold up absolutely nicely, but yes, just imagine if there were a Pac-Man World series with the treatment of the N-Sane and Reignited trilogies!
I grew up in the late 90s-early 00s, so I wasn't there for Pac-Man's original rise to fame. However, Pac-Man World 2 will always be one of my favorite games. It holds up really well 20 years later and the arcade function is what exposed me to other classic Pac-Man games. One of the best games in the entire series in my opinion.
Pac-Man has always been pretty important to me. My first gaming system was the Sega Genesis, and my first games consisted of the first 3 Sonic games, Jungle Book, and none other than Ms. Pac-Man, easily the best form of classic arcade Pac-Man I've ever played. The relevance of the series kept going however, when I made a Let's Play of Pac-Man World 3 back in 2012 on my old channel of mrgameandpie. From 2011-2016, I made over 60 complete LP series, but the only one that ever got notably popular was Pac-Man World 3. If you've ever heard the saying "Pac-Man World 3 is the Sonic 06 of the Pac-Man series" that was me who originally coined the phrasing, though it doesn't quite have the meaning you might expect. I always meant this as more of a thematic equivalent than anything else. Both games went for a darker, more realistic tone, both visually and narratively, a heavier emphasis on story, a greater degree of combat compared to both series typical platforming-centric gameplay. Also I happened to run into a relatively high number of glitches on that LP playthrough. I don't like World 3 as much as World 2, not by a long shot, but it is by no means the abyss of quality one might expect from someone saying "The Sonic 06 of the Pac-Man series."
I think the best course of action would be PacMan World 4. Without a doubt. Maybe a PacMan MetroidVania? I think he has so much potential, and Namco is definitely slept on him
A 3D platformer would be great.
@@Demeech what pac man was humanized?
I’d love a remaster of Pac-Man world 2, it’s a childhood game for me and very nostalgic
Starring Chomp-Chomp (in his PMW2 design like in the Pac-Man World 1 remake), Professor Pac-Man, Pac-Ranger, Sue and maybe even her jukebox (or “poopbox” according to the ghosts that are also in their Pac-Man World 2 designs) as playable characters!
Pac Man for me is a game I pick up every now and then for some arcade fun. Championship Edition 2 fills that spot nicely for me right now, I really enjoy the gameplay and visuals. Looking forward to Pac Man Museum Plus, I'm definitely getting that. Nice video, I can tell it took you a while to make and it paid off.
(Speaking of merchandise at the beginning of the video, I have the Pac Man Board Game, it's actually great lol)
I have one of the board games. It's the matching game one.
_"A rushed video is forever bad, but a delayed video can be good"_ ~ Miyamoto
Same, but also throw in the NES Mario games and the NES Contra games.
Also, it's funny how SFxT has the "modern" Pac-Man design but Smash has the classic one, and Smash is much more fondly remembered.
I mean, that's before Bad Boxart Megaman...
@@KonaKonaKaabisteru True, there's no denying that atrocity
@@KonaKonaKaabisteru If everything else that happened to Mega Man at the time didn't happen at that time, BBMM in SFXT would've been hilarious.
SFXT was a whole shit show, a lot of factors contributed to it not making a splash and BBMM was just one relatively small one.
@@kfcnyancat Well, even the designers and people who worked on BBA Mega Man thought it was a bad idea. It's just Ono thought "Hey, let's just do this for shits and giggles." when really, it was one of those "too soon" type of jokes, especially with what was going on with Capcom at the time.

Happy Belated Birthday. Great video!
I really liked Pac-Man Tilt, and the comparison to Yoshi's Universal Gravitation is spot on.
Although I'm gonna say, if the game was longer than 20 stages I probably wouldn't have finished it, trying to get the high score did get tiresome.
But again, I did love it, and the length was just right

I got to play Super Pac-Man a few years ago on the ferry when my family went on a trip to Prince Edward Island. Can confirm I only half-knew what I was doing. I hope Pac Jr gets more rereleases in the future though, looks fun.
By the way, if you want a fully-realised version of the "Various mazes in different time periods" idea, well you're in luck because MY childhood version of the yellow pizza-shape man, Pac-Man: Adventures In Time for the PC is exactly that! It's a great game, check it out if you can!
I gotta check that game out.
Was it on a 60 in 1 cabinet? All the Pac-Man games are on it. That's where I mostly played Jr. Pac-Man.
@@Demeech I just realized nobody ever responded to you, but Adventures in Time is actually a Windows 2000 game, and it was on a disc. I believe there are probably .iso files around of the game. Def check it out, it's really good.
It's cool how this video contains an interview with the super obsessed Pac-Man fan
as fellow fan of Pac-Man himself this video was well made and super informative
Thank you for making this very informative video also I'll definitely be picking up museum plus and Pac-Man world re pac when I get the chance to I'm sure I'll enjoy them both and what they have to offer in terms of content when I eventually end up receiving them both
I first played the original game on Namco Museum volume 1 on the original playstation and that was my first introduction to Pac-Man as a fan of the series I loved not only the original game but also games like Pac and Pal Super Pac-Man and of course Ms Pac-Man witch is probably one of my favorite Pac-Man sequels also I first played super Pac-Man and Pac and pal on a plug and play that also had Pac-Man plus on it and that was also another sequel that was loads of fun to play I also loved how while the design of the maze itself stayed the same its color changed from blue to green and the fruits that where normally seen in the center of the maze where replaced with soda cans and cocktails to this day I always found that amusing and it still occasionally makes me chuckle not sure why but it just does buy the way that plug and play that I mentioned earlier I still own it to this very day I recently played it again and it brought back some immense nostalgia of when I used to play it as a child during my youth
And it's one of my favorite Pac-Man related collectibles
The reason why Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures doesn't feel like a sequel is because it isn't. In Japan it was called Hello! Pac-Man. Calling it a sequel to the original Pac-Man would be like saying HEY, YOU! Pikachu! is the sequel to Pokémon Red and Blue.
Thank you for making this analysis on the state of the Pac-Man franchise. I got into Pac-Man thanks to Pac-Man World, and I loved playing both that game and the classics like the original, Ms. Pac-Man, and Arrangement. Personally, I think the best iteration of the maze formula is the PC game Pac-Man: Adventures in Time, which adds a 3D perspective, balances the jumping mechanic from Pac-Mania, and has a lot of different elements like gravity, hazards, and slopes depending on the maze.
I think part of the reason why they ditched the universe of the Pac-Man World games is because much of the characters in that era were made by GCC, the company that made those "unofficial" sequels under Midway. They hold some rights to royalties for the characters they made, and because Namco doesn't want to pay them, they just decided to stop using them in the 2010s.
This video explains the deal, at least surrounding Ms. Pac-Man: ua-cam.com/video/0LTmUaxXA0c/v-deo.html
Then GCC sold the Ms. Pac-Man royalties to Atgames, who proceeded to get sued by Bandai Namco (rightfully so)
I understand that people aren't fans of the designs for Party, but those are my favorite designs in the series since they look a lot like their original designs with some new stuff to them.
Good point, but I think the designs were all at their best in the non-GBA versions of Pac-Man World 2! 😂
@@kieranstark7213, that's just classic Pac-Man's design.
Absolutely
Honestly the only way people would remember Kinky is in that one video called Kinky the Always Blue Ghost, a Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer parody. That’s how I got introduced to Kinky.
20:50 That is Pac-Man Championship Edition DX released in 2010, NOT Pac-Man Championship Edition.
Despite what the name would have you think, CE and CEDX are two separate games with their own rules and mechanics that make them fundamentally different experiences.
Iwatani had no involvement with DX.
Happy Birthday Demeech! Hope you're having a good one.
That was worth it all
I remember how the kids classes at my church had video games to keep us occupied until our service started. They changed the selection every week, but every week, I would pray that Pac-Man World 2 was available to play
I don't think my church even had games.
Why this video is so underrated ?
Because people just love to sleep on the Pac-Man World series (mainly PMW1 for the PS1, PMW2 for home consoles and PMWR) and the people that actually give a shit about it including me
I acctually grew up with the ghostly adventures and I love it
but oh my god was not flawed, I just rewatched it recently
Fun fact- There was a mod for Pac-Man that changed Pac-Man into Popeye's head, complete with pipe, called "Pop-man".
Edit- I saw it ONCE, in the breezeway of an old department store called "Harts".
New Pac flick on the way - lot's of great games in the Series OG and Champs my favourites.
Pac-Man will always remain.
Viva Pac-Man.
Great video, But I gotta say, you can definitely improve at World Rally. Also I really like Tim's Red-Dead PAC-MAN idea, and I think I'd be able to expand on it a bit.
I definitely can 😂 I had to record A LOT of games on many different consoles.
The hype is real
If Bandai Namco ACTUALLY cared, they would have made even better games than Nintendo (Who STILL deserve to give DLC in Mario Party Superstars).
I'm surprised that we spoke of Pac in Time, and how we wished it was a classic Maze game going through time, but failed to mention the game that actually did just that in the form of Pac-Man Adventures in Time.
I highly recommend that game. It's a nostalgic childhood game for me!
A Pac-Man World Trilogy remake needs to happen, especially considering the success of the Crash N.Sane and Spyro Reignited trilogies.
But Bandai Namco should buy who ever owns the Rights to Ms. Pacman, & Pacman Junior to get that Remake.
Obliviously you cant play all of the them, but no mention of ms pac man maze madness, the gba port of world 1 and 2,that pac man party crossover on the gamecube and ps2 and that pac roll game on the ds?

I want a pac-man world 4 or a new platformer, a pac-man world rally 2, and a pac-man party 2. I know most people aren't too fond of it, but I love that game. Most of the minigames are fun and patra is my favorite character of the pac-man franchise. She's adorable. I always just played it for the minigames & thank god all of them are already unlocked. Speaking of pac-man party, they did ms. pac-man dirty by not including her in that game. It really does sucks that namco doesn't really care all that much for this franchise anymore. At least the spin-off and platforming part of it. They'll just keep rehashing maze games over & over.

As much as I agree with him that the PMW2 designs are the best of the best (though I do kinda like Pac-Man’s design/model in the 2010s Pac-Man games just as long as he didn’t devolve back into a simplistic yellow ball for nostalgia pandering’s sake) thing that Demeech, while not being a fan of the redesigns of the Pac-Man characters in the 2010s (especially the mid-2010s in Ghostly Adventures) compared to how he was in the early-mid 2000s (Pac-Man World) and some of the late 2010s (Super Smash Bros. 4 & 5), doesn’t treat his opinion on the redesign as a fact or turn it into bandwagoning!

Videos like this need more traction. Pac-Man already has very many original ideas on its own, so you'd think that the Pac-Man World games would take better advantage of that. Nope, they blatantly copy metal Mario and Sonics spin dash. Like, wtf Namco?! This is your biggest IP! It just seems lazy to me that they would treat such an iconic character this way.
Despite Namco Bandai's questionable decisions, i still really enjoy the games and would personally love to see a continuation of the World series but with more original gameplay mechanics. That's what Pac-Man deserves honestly.
It's nice to know that Pac-Man Museum+ Is a thing not to mention acknowledging the fact that Pac-Man arrangement was a thing (and still is) Who knows if it sell well (which I'm sure it would) due to complete curiosity of the series for newcomers if anything else
