The only sound EV should emit is “The Sound of Silence”. Regarding security: all cars should have compulsory anti collision (pedestrians, pets, cars, objects, whatever) system. Leave the noise out of the equation.
It's nonsense to say that EVs are silent. Engine noise is only a small part of the soundscape. The sound of tyres on the road, for example, is common across all vehicles and is very noticable, even in EVs.
All electric cars should sound like Pacman when on the move, and when you turn the car on and off it should sound like an autobot transforming to and from vehicle form. The horn should be the mine that jango fetts ship drops when they're being chased by obi wan.
I had an electric car come up a country lane behind me,I heard it in plenty of time to get the dog to one side, they only appear silent in a city full of noise, I think it's more about people looking before crossing a road and not having their face stuck in a screen.
Although fun and giving individuality I think EVs need to all make similar sounds so people can identify what's coming, particularly those with visually impairments.
So as much as I’d like the opportunity to have the ability to customize the way my car sounds, I am at this point more interested in how my horn sounds, because at the heart of the matter, it’s about the driver reacting to pedestrians with a horn sound that is not designed to startle them or to cause them to have to flinch, but a sound that is designed to get their attention and to gently move them along, because we all know the angry horn sound and that’s something we don’t need more of, so I would like to be able to customize my horn sound then the sound of the car, because I actually like or cherish silence, so I don’t particularly care how the car sounds, I would, however, like the opportunity or the ability to lower the sound, if I think it’s too loud or increase the sound if I think it’s too low, so that would be a nice benefit too! So I absolutely hate the sound of that crappy horn in my Tesla, I absolutely hate it, so I’m very reluctant to use it, as it’s really embarrassing to think that people look at me & go what the hell is that?
@@theodorehaskins3756 you can change the horn. You can buy different horns at auto parts stores like Napa, AutoZone and O’Reilly auto parts. You can also order horns online. Its easy to replace it yourself as well.
Over the years technology has worked to make cars quieter, better exhausts etc, i don't want in car artificial noises, i want to listen to my stereo Pedestrians should be aware of vehicles heading towards them if they intend to cross the road, and not looking at their smartphones, if car companies need to have a noise, why not simply put a transducer on the motor and slightly amplify the sound, that should be unique enough. Otherwise i can see the day when the sound will be the Jetsons
Hi Sparky haven't seen you in a long time. In densely populated area background noise generators do not work. All it does is add to the rising Noise Floor. There needs to be other methods than sound for Pedestrian Safety. Exterior Noise generator is not viable.
Can anyone honestly say they can't hear an EV approaching? My hearing is pretty rubbish but I have always been able to hear a heavy vehicle approaching.
Electric cars are not silent as soon as they move much faster than walking pace, they are just not as loud as cars with a combustion engine and at speed the tires and wind noise is not that different from them. I hope for the sake of all of us that artificial noise from cars is only played where it benefits us, like in parking lots and when the is little traffic so we need to notice them. This as opposed to for example where traffic is constant since everyone knows there is cars the artificial noise will be unnecessary noise.
In truth, although I run a BEV, most modern ICE passenger cars only make a significant noise when they are accelerating/decelerating. The rest is tyre noise. And obviously BEVs make tyre noise too. The reduction in tyre noise is something for tyre manufacturers to work on, because some tyres are louder than others. Most 'engine' noise is from large commercial diesel vehicles, and they will be disappearing very soon, as the economics of the driver, then driverless, BE Truck become inevitable. As commercial diesels disappear they'll take the vast majority of the major noise, smell and fuel pollution with them [tyre wear pollution will still be a problem to solve]. There is no need for 'sounds', just better driver/pedestrian awareness and cooperation, plus hugely improved collision avoidance tech. And the vast majority of people will be glad of the quieter environment anyway.
For high performance BEVs there should be an In Cabin sounds where the occupants can hear how Fast & Aggressive the car is moving. That is a good safety feature that should be optional. But Exterior outside of BEVs should have NO Sound other than the natural sounds it already makes. Additional Artificial Noise does not improve safety especially in densely populated areas. All it does is raise the Noise Floor adding more noise pollution. You need a loud enough correct pitch sound to be an adequate warning and that is just not plausible as constant exterior sound. Just like the Truck Reversing Beeps which have been changed such noise pollution does not work. Interior Performance Sound Useful Helpful but Exterior Noise Generator Dangerously Useless.
I strongly oppose adding noise to BEVs. Pedestrians should ALWAYS be aware of their surroundings. Currently, all vehicles will continue to make tire-road noise. DO NOT enable pedestrians to grow further distracted!!
EVs should sound apologetic: "I apologize for using a private vehicle when I could have used public transport, and thereby contributing to city congestion, pollution, noise, hazards and general craziness. Cities belong to people not cars". Alternatively it could just play "You're a mean one, Mr Grinch" or similar. Maybe each manufacturer could get their own special "selfish song" that their cars should have to play. And all EVs should be glittery pink with big pink shiny bows on the bumper, and tassels & ribbon hung from everywhere possible. If private vehicles insist on making cities miserable places to live for everybody else, then they - at least - should look pretty [ridiculous]! Of course it does mean every city will need to have integrated, efficient, effective, sustainable & green urban mobility infrastructure that focuses primarily on walk-ability & bike-ability (or similar) - only solar-powered micro cars (for those that actually need them) are exempt. Perhaps manufacturers should be compelled to contribute heftily towards alternative transport infrastructure for every vehicle it sells within a particular city. In Tirana (Albania), as part of its urban greening strategy, businesses plant two trees every year for every vehicle it owns in its fleet, and residents plant a tree on their child's birthday. Perhaps city residents could alternate planting a street tree (to absorb pollutants, mitigate noise pollution, control stormwater runoff, and provide shade & amenity) and a fruit tree or similar (to reduce urban malnutrition in affected communities). Perhaps city management departments should be compelled to donate an e-bike to low-income communities for every private vehicle and for every electricity recharge point & gas station / hydrogen pump (also pink & glittery and decorated with bows, tassels & ribbon) it continues to license (to for-profit companies). And 10x that for any air mobility hazard-craft nonsense it licenses (per trip!), including for any associated infrastructure required that will eat into much needed urban public space.
As I get older I prefer less noise, so the idea of 30 EV's all making their own sound is a complete nightmare! Imagine placing 30 music devices in a room with all of them playing a different song; you'll soon be hankering for the sound of a good old petrol engine!
With the advent of graphene ev seem set to become cheaper and more popular yes but we're starting to move from the electron to the photon and it could mean some more rapidly advancing ability. Coverage of this is enivatable but when is best to cover the issue.
That's right and in addition you have wind resistance at higher speeds. Noise isn't going anywhere as those two already account for the majority of noise as most modern ICE vehicles apart fro commercials are already very quite relatively speaking.
I want my electric car to sound like a gentle stream flowing by when its stationary. When moving I want the sound of the stream to increase so it sounds like rushing water tumbling over rocks as I drive by. That or the sound of wind blowing through the tops of pine trees.
I think there should b a list of choices on the control screen. One might want Italian Super Car and another might like American Muscle. I will take old 18 wheeler.
There is still one noise that all cars make no matter what their power source is, it's tire (tyres for you Brits) noise. After all, most gas (petrol) powered vehicles are pretty well silenced by their mufflers.
I’ve been driving a whisper quiet EV for a few years now. So far the absence of sound hasn’t led to unsafe situations. Meanwhile, when outside, I can hear the electric buzz of a Zoe, Kona or e-Niro as they enter my quiet residential street 100 meters away. I can also clearly hear them passing by when I’m inside. They’re more noisy and far more annoying than most ICE vehicles! So while I understand the argument for the visually impaired, I think a better balance on these artificial sounds must be found, to not needlessly pollute our newfound city silence. Especially in quiet residential areas. At night.
The sound on the road and motorways coming from the Rolling tyres, so does it matter is electric car or not the sound will stay with us forever till the car's flying.
