Also, I keep a lint roller (the ones with sticky sheets) for after I rip the seams. Just roll over the fabric and all the threads come out.
The red ball!!! The red ball!!!! You just saved my life! Seed a large pattern the wrong direction on a box cushion. Totally finished it then figured it out. Great video! You can also use box cutters or an exacto knife instead of the surgical seam ripper - they might be easier to maneuver than a razor.
Explaining how serger works might help some people. You mentioned the "needle threads", but it was mostly in passing - I think it's the key info here: we unpick and pull on the thread(s) that came from the needle(s) (1 on a 3-thread, 2 on a 4-thread serger; coverlock and some sergers might have up to 3 I think). That's what gives the serge stitch its structure and attaches it to the fabric. I can pull on the wrong thread sometimes (the loopies can look like straight stitches if the tension is just right), but the top of the seam bunching up and tightening is a dead give away.

I use a lint roller to get most of the treads before picking.

And I have one in the sewing room, just never thought of using it for ripped seam thread.
Lint rollers are the bomb. I've used them when I couldn't find my de-piller-whatshamacallitthingie and had to use an actual razor, yes as in my Venus razor lol, and used the lint roller to clean up the ball carnage. :D

I did not know that I needed to be schooled on seam ripping but it seems I did. That just grabbing and ripping is too scary for me because my luck it would cause damage to the garment. I thrifted a sweater dress that someone altered to size down, but they left the original seams in place, and it been tedious to get the altered stitches a loose, going to try the ball side and see if that will work faster. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come

I see you have those ironing thimbles. Do you like them? Do you ever use them for needle gripping or as a regular thimble? I've been thinking about getting some. Also, I love your channel!
What you did with the 2 thread serger seam, I sometimes do that with straight stitches and works perfect with light weighted fabric. Only downside is that it can sometimes gather your fabric and leave wrinkles. But with a quick iron press that’s fixed

I actually got it from Dollar Tree.
All I do is rip the thread with a seam ripper & then rip the fabric it apart..!! But i try not to wrip the fabric. To me there's no wrong or right way. If it's a zig zag stich or special type of stitch I'd cut it..!! So it be much more quicker. But I try to cut really close to the stitch..!! A razor please show the razor cuz never seen/heard of that.

I understand using the surgical seam cutter is a necessity on the corner of the jean pocket, but why on the sides? Is it because a heavier thread is probably being used or is it just because that's what happens to be in your hand at that moment? If the double stitch is to be cut, must one stitch at a time be removed, or can both somehow be done at once? Also, what if only the outside of is available to be worked on, like a sleeve? Maybe a shirt sleeve can be turned inside out with care, but a sports jacket sleeve cannot (I think). What do you do in that case?
I like the surgical seam ripper for heavier threads because then I don’t dull my seam ripper so fast.
And where was this video three weeks ago, when I was ripping seams out of the fitted sheet from heck?!

I feel your pain. I've been making my single duvet covers into doubles (they don't do double bedding in Finland, each person has their own duvet don't even ask... no wonder they only have 1-2 kids per family BUT I'M DIGRESSING, so yeah, I buy second hand single duvet covers and tear them up and make a hhheeeyyuuuuuuuge duvet cover in which I put in my single blanket in relation to where I actually sleep in my queen size bed. It works. No stupid cold air seeps in from the edges.
I tried removing the seam just like you said and it didn't work. I tried both sides. So frustrating.

Great video for me, but there's just one more thing I want you to seam rip and that's the pockets on men's dress shirts. I have a lot of those. Lol. Ruined a few.
Yes, those can be difficult. I typically use a combination of slow picking and the first seam ripper hack with the ball end.

What is the lifespan of these tools? My seam ripper is only about three months old and I feel like I need a new one already. I like the look of the surgical one, I could've used it earlier on today when I was losing my mind with the zipper removal off of a jacket. Oy vey!
Seam rippers get duller faster depending on how much you use them. If you’re constantly ripping long seams or denim thread, it could definitely get dull in 3 months. That’s why my mom has always had several at a time.
@@BlueprintDIY would be nice if someone made a model with replacable ripper, like same way as disposable razors. Just clip the new one on and enjoy the smoooooth ride on the seam, oh yes!
