I like how genuine they are. Their music has an honest quality to it, and you can see and hear how much the girls put their souls into it. It's not a product specifically designed to sell records. It's not sterilized and homogenized to appeal to the masses. It's not over-produced using the power of technology to create a "perfect" or idealized sound. It's just raw and passionate rock 'n roll.

  • @robertkrawitz8237

This has perhaps the most classic hard rock sound of any of their music, while still very definitely being their own.
One story about Dull Knives really illustrates who they are. From the get-go, there were people complaining that it's too short (it clocks in at just about 3', a compact gem of a headbanger). Their father was one of the people who wanted it longer. So they went back, tried a few things, adding a guitar solo among others, and decided that nothing would make the song better, so they held firm, and said that if you think it's too short, to put it on repeat. Advice that legions of The Warning fans have taken to heart. That speaks to their determination to uphold their artistic vision, and the maturity to understand that sometimes less really is more.
This is the song that they played from their basement studio (The Warning Cave) for De(Tour), a virtual show in the fall of 2020 to raise money to support venues that were in trouble because of the pandemic; it's commonly considered to be the reference performance: ua-cam.com/video/-VUCzqDyOdI/v-deo.html. It was so popular that it was played a second time; it was the only song to be so played. Lzzy Hale saw it and immediately commented on Twitter that she's love to tour with them; they already happened to be big fans of Halestorm. There's a bit of an innocence about them I do think, in that there are a lot of bands they look up to as fans and seemingly don't fully realize that they're on the same level.
They hadn't been overlooked by record labels. From quite early on, they were pursued by a lot of labels, but those always came with caveats, that they'd have to change their music, how they dressed on stage (we can guess what *that* likely meant), and so forth. One exasperated rep asked them whether they'd rather be playing for 12 or 12,000 people; they answered that they'd rather play the music they like, the way they want, for 12 than something they don't like, dressed other than how they want to dress, for 12,000. The hapless exec was escorted from the premises. As it is, they spent 7 months negotiating with Lava Records, whose CEO (Jason Flom) is a firm believer that the artist knows best. They insisted on reviewing the contract themselves (they didn't leave the lawyers out, but they wanted to get the details right), and held firm on provisions such as complete artistic control, ownership of their back catalog (thus there are never problems with pre-Mayday songs getting blocked), and keeping (and growing!) their Patreon community, which is now approaching 2,000 people. They're not arrogant in the least, but they are confident in themselves and their vision and will not abide others tampering with it. That does not mean that they won't listen to advice; David Bendeth (their producer for Mayday) suggested playing Evolve much faster than they had originally written it, and they clearly took that advice. I imagine that Bendeth suggested that they give it a try at the faster tempo, they tried it, and liked it. But he did comment that they came on like a pack of lions. If you watch the opening of their version of Enter Sandman again (which Bendeth didn't produce, but he did mix it), that's exactly how they enter, as a pride of alpha lionesses.
You've listened to a variety of their music and seen their different sounds; they have a lot more variety than what you've heard. If you want to sample their first album, I'd suggest Unmendable and Copper Bullets, which are probably the heaviest songs on that album. But it also has a gentle, yet very intense, piano-driven ballad (Black Holes), another ballad with a guitar solo rather more complex than it sounds (Show Me The Light) and a wildly euphoric 1980's style rocker (Survive) that happens to be my personal favorite. Another single of theirs you might like is Narcisista, their first song in Spanish. It's not particularly heavy, but it's a good solid hard rock song. That one also has a story; they had critics in Mexico who were not happy that they hadn't written any of their music to that time in Spanish, and accused them of being "malinchista", a Mexican term for cultural traitor. There's a bit of irony to calling someone malinchista for not singing in Spanish that you can easily research if you're interested. So in any event, this song is a dig at their critics, all the more so because as much as they want to hate it, they probably can't. A Mexican reviewer commented that the song is harsh, but very, very funny in the process of delivering the message. The Foro Didi performance was the first, and Pau is absolutely hilarious on the drums, vocals, and theatrics.

MAYHEM, and so on. and i fucking love the warning. to me they are a breath of fresh air on today chart topping music. they are young talented musicians who write they're own music sing ( no auto tune) and play they're instruments. what is not to like about them ? I agree with you that they write apparently simple songs but they sound extremely well (yep, Beatles were the best in doing this) but they fill the songs with small variations of all sorts (bass, guitar, drums, tempos, crescendos, vocal harmonies) that makes very enjoyable the listen to them. This is why me, a progrock guy that usually don’t listen AOR or standard rock likes TW.

The Warning have such a unique sound I believe they actually do have the possibility of being as you say the next “Beatles”. I have said for many years now that they would one day be recognized as not just one of, but THE GREATEST Power Trio of all time, eclipsing even the greatest power trios to date in Rush, Cream, The Police, Muse, Jimi Hendrix, Grand Funk Railroad. I know this is a bold statement, but I am absolutely 100% convinced of this!

Yes Scott, I am very aware how bold that statement is. But as you are well aware yourself, these young ladies at such a young age have already been playing together for 10 years now, and writing their own music for 7 plus of those years. They can easily continue on for 40 plus more years if they so choose to do so. You are also aware that they have repeatedly stated that this is what they want to do for the rest of their lives and have devoted their lives to creating music together. They also have an attitude of always learning and always striving for excellence in what they do.
So yes my fellow Patreon friend (you know me as Glen Cox on Patreon), it is a very bold statement I have made, but I have been following these young ladies since mid 2015 and believe that they are definitely something very rare and special. The fact that they continue to be humble and extremely appreciative of their fan base also plays heavy in their favor.

But also if you like journeys of young people making it at what they love you really ought to check out a young drummer named Yoyoka -- now 12 who just released her first original song, _Sparkling,_ written in collaboration with former members of Prince and Dream Theater. She was voted into Drummer World's Top 500 drummers of all time at age 10 and imo is one of the most charismatic drummers ever. Whenever I need to bring a little joy into my life I check out one of her videos. At this point, the girl has stalked a guy and then murdered him when he rejected her, and her evil side has emerged as a separate entity, fighting her for control. You are right, there are so many talented musicians out there, but that is not the point. IF talented musicians would get the success they deserve, than "The Warning" (Classic Rock), "Band-Maid" (Hard Rock), Lovebites / Nemophila (Heavy Metal), Angelina Jordan (Jazz/Blues/Pop), Courtney Hadwin (Rock/Soul/Pop), Diana Ankudinova (Pop), and many many others would be Superstars, played in the radio and be high in the charts.
Unfortunately it is not the talent that counts. Who will be succesfull is decided by Record Companies, Marketing Institutes, Sound Engineers and others who have a lot to do with money but almost nothing with music. In many cases its the software that decides who will be promoted - they analyze the succesfull songs in the charts and they promote artists who sound similar...OR they force musicians to change their style to more chart compatibility. If you "Go Your Own Way" (copyright Fleetwood Mac;-), you are lost in most cases.

Sadly there are a fair number of "Metalheads" who are tryhards, and won't listen to "pussy music". Giving the Metal Community a bad name, in the process. Funny part is how much of the 70s/80s stuff was just Hard Rock, from Sabbath, Judas Priest, or MOST of Ozzy's solo output. Metal or Rock is irrelevant, IMO, as long as the talent is there and the songwriting is prominent. Anyhow, I love these ladies. Talent, attitude, and first and foremost, songwriters.
