Amazing video! Ibn Tayymiyyah has been misrepresented by both his modern day opponents and supporters. Ibn Tayymiyyah was a very deep thinker who thought with a lot of nuance. I would say I am a traditional muslim opposed to many of the things Ibn Tayymiyyah said, yet I appreciate his contributions. His conception of ijtihad was unique and very special indeed. May Allah reward you for this wonderfully explained video.

@@HATL201 Haha I know all about the problematic statements of ibn tayymiyah. As for mawlid if I remember in Iman Suyuti's fatwa he says it Biddah Hasana. You are correct we all celebrate it out of love and we do not limit it to any day or month.
Anyways there are rules and categories of how to assess if something is a biddah and of what nature it is. As for defending ibn tayymiyyah, I think many great scholars have already pointed out his errors and also defended him at times.

The mainstream salafi opinion is that acts of innovation/ bid' a performed by Muslim layman who are ignorant about the fact that those acts of worship are innovations will be rewarded for their good intentions. The act itself is rejected as the prophet- sallallahu alayhi wa sallam- said but the good intention may be rewarded. That's the mainstream opinion amongst salafi scholars.

      Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:
(who fought in twelve Ghazawat in the company of the Prophet). I heard four things from the Prophet (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) and they won my admiration. He said; - 1. "No lady should travel on a journey of two days except with her husband or a Dhi-Mahram; - 2. "No fasting is permissible on the two days of Id-ul-Fitr and `Id-ul-Adha; - 3. "No prayer (may be offered) after the morning compulsory prayer until the sun rises; and no prayer after the `Asr prayer till the sun sets; - 4. Should I not send you on the same mission as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) sent me? Do not leave an image without obliterating it, or a high grave without levelling It. This hadith has been reported by Habib with the same chain of transmitters and he said: (Do not leave) a picture without obliterating it.
      - Sahih Muslim 969, Book of Janazah
Jabir said: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that the graves should be plastered or they be used as sitting places (for the people), or a building should be built over them.
      - Sahih Muslim 970, Book of Janazah
      Narrated AbuHurayrah:

May Allah reward you brother Paul. But I would like to clarify one thing here that a Muslim has no hesitation in accepting that a Muslim will be rewarded for his good intention in doing any act of worship even if it was not legislated by the religion provided that he was unaware of its prohibition or disapproval, just as no Muslim will be punished for committing the sins that he did not know were considered as sins in the religion. This is one of the most basic principles of Islam and no follower of Imam ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) would have any problem in accepting it. But good intention does not make the deed acceptable in and of itself as ibn Taymiyyah himself said that these people will only be rewarded for their intentions and not the deed. So as far as the act itself was concerned then his position was quite clear that it is undoubtedly prohibited and greatly disliked in the religion and his whole life and his struggles against the innovators bears testimony to that fact

For those who condemn grave visitation outright and the building of mosques over tombs, ponder on the reality that the Prophet's mosque in Medina (Masjid An Nabawi) is where the bodies of the Prophet himself along side which lie the bodies of Abu Bakr and Umar are enshrined and where millions of devout muslims make pilgrimage and supplication year round. The glaring inconsistency between doctrine and actual practice in this case reflects a need for serious re-evaluation on one's narrow rigid stance.

Ibn Taymiyyah was a gifted jurist, but that's it. He was sorely lacking knowledge in many other areas. He was imprisoned because of his heretical anthropomorphic descriptions of Allah - telling that.
And as society has changed greatly since ibn Taymiyyah's time, it is more beneficial to follow a scholar more in tuned with present practices and realities rather than fixating on a past reality that does not exist any longer.
It would also benefit yourself, Paul, if you explored the sunnah more deeply than constantly falling back on certain personalities.

@Google Account Astaghfirullah is correct. You cannot go to ibn Taymiyyah and ask his opinion about whether modern international banking is halal or not because he is dead. Nor can you glean from his books anything because that institution did not exist in his lifetime.
My comment is urging one to seek timely guidance from a modern, living scholar in matters of religion rather than stupidly following a relic of the past, like ibn Taymiyyah, whose rulings and concerns were based on his time. Ibn Taymiyyah is not a prophet, nor are his opinions inspired. He was deeply flawed in some aspects of his understanding of Islam. Ignoring that, as so many do, is to deify the man - and that is shirk.
It is through honest study that Islamic scholars today can sift through the work of past scholarship, understand the context, shortcomings, and strengths, to provide beneficial guidance to our lives today. That in no way implies disrespect of past scholars or ignoring the sunnah.
To suggest that we learn the sunnah through ibn Taymiyyah's commentary is to put the cart before the horse. It is better to examine ibn Taymiyyah through the sunnah, accepting the good and leaving the bad - rather than making the sin of putting ibn Taymiyyah on par with the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.
Your comment implies you have no real knowledge of how traditional Islamic sciences are taught, or what qualifications merit one the title of faqih, qadi, mufti, or any of the other titles of Islamic scholars.

As a revert from Christianity to islam, I can see the celebration of the prophet SAW’s birthday being problematic. Perhaps early Christians started off celebrating Jesus in that way and overtime it morphed into worship. I even read one commentary that some of the idols they worshipped in Mecca started as statues of important people that morphed into worship overtime.
All that being said - I don’t claim to know more than scholars or learned Muslims and I don’t know enough on the matter to say anything in absolute terms

Perhaps you should also discuss the majority mainstream Sunni scholars who were critical of Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn Abdul Wahhab and salafism. Ibn Taymiyya made many mistakes, especially in matters of creed, not only that he presented himself as a Mujtahid which he has not, Ibn Taymiyya has been refuted by many Sunni scholars & he is Not an authority in Islamic creedal matters.
As for celebrating/commemorating the blessed birth, evidence is found for this from The Qur'an & Hadith and is evident from the writings of classical Islamic scholars who are authorities in Islamic law & creed. The mainstream opinion according to almost all salafi scholars is that acts of innovation/ bid'a performed by laymen Muslims who are ignorant about the fact that those acts of worship are innovations are REWARDED FOR THEIR GOOD INTENTION . THE ACT ITSELF IS REJECTED BUT NOT THE INTENTION as it is not conform the Sunnah as the prophet- sallallahu alayhi wa sallam- said .
A minority only said that they do not know that those good intentions will be rewarded but they agree that ignorant laymen Muslim will not be held accountable for their innovations as long as nobody made clear to them and explained them that those acts are innovations.

The topic of asking for the prophets peace and blessings be upon him intercession:
In the time of the prophet peace and blessings be upon him, the prophet taught the tuwassal Salah to a Sahaba RadiyAllahu anh - who's eyesight was cured from this.
This same tuwasul was taught to a tabieen, (after the prophet peace and blessings be upon him left this world) to which he practiced it and also cured his eyesight.
Furthermore, how is it logical for the prophet peace and blessings be upon him to teach the Sahaba tuwasul but to disallow it for the rest of the ummah?
There was no condition set at the time of teaching the tuwasul to the Sahaba that it was not allowed for the rest of the ummah.
In addition the prophet peace and blessings be upon him knew his teachings would be passed on for generations.
