I rode on Amtrak on this line in Dec 95/Jan 96. I remember having to wait at the Raton tunnel for a huge coal train with U-boats as main power. How times have changed.
The last T-2's. --Really appreciate that night shot! I well remember some 20+ years ago, watching the eastbound T-2 drop while coming into Las Vegas one night and no, I wasn't doing the driving.
22 of these semaphores were removed in November 2022. A total of 11 remain between Wagon Mound and Colmor, NM remain. The days grow short; see them while you can!
They were around 110 cars on average. They were taken over Raton Pass in two sections with 3 Dash 9's on the front and 3 more on the rear. The trains were re assembled at Trinidad for their journey east.
Amtrak doesn't own the tracks so they are somewhat at the mercy of the host railroad. And this stretch of track HAS been resolved, BNSF is installing PTC with funding from Amtrak and New Mexico.
When my late Dad and I were in Raton, NM in 2006 there was BNSF along with unpatched Santa Fe in the yard in town.

Amtrak's been in business for over 40+ years and this stretch of track still hasn't been resolved, what a joke.

Maybe one day New Mexico's passenger service and Amtrak will go up toward Raton. That would be super nice - if BNSF could sell this line to the state.
