Google Podcasts should have folded into Google Play Music, and UA-cam Premium should have remained like it was back in the day.
It's just Google all over again.
100%. So much GPM functionality never got ported over, and YT is a confusing mess. I have zero confidence that podcasts will get updated on a reasonable schedule (they shiuld have had that all ready to go when announcing the shutdown). I've used Pocketcasts for many years, my only complaint is no Wear app

Google Podcast had a really nice aesthetic.
First YT replaces the great Google Play Music, now it's Google Podcasts. I just don't like that video playlists are added to YTM and audio playlists are added to UA-cam-it gets cluttered.
I'm not switching to YTM Podcasts, so I'm testing out Pocket Casts.
Pocket casts is excellent. A switched from Google podcasts to it a while back
Give AntennaPod a try :) it's pretty clean too

Make a good app, update it over time to make it a Great app, kill it off, Then have people integrate into a new, unpolished app with the promise of "we'll make it better over time"
I love yt music, but you cant mix podcasts with music. Like you said, it should be a standalone tab within yt music where you have your podcasts

I feel like this is a bad move by Google. Nothing wrong with the app at all. The simplicity made it the best to me and they are killing it for a convoluted mess that is YT Music. I've been using Snip'd and I like it so far but this still bums me out.
Ig they're only killing it because it didn't create revenue but cost too much to maintain. I already suspected it when it didn't get a proper material u interface.

Thank you so much for this video. The feature that I primarily used on Google Podcasts was “Marked as played” and it was quite shocking when UA-cam music couldn’t even do that much. I’ve moved on to Pocket Casts and I’m already at ease with the simplicity of it all.
I'm with you, I can't stand having my podcasts and music all jumbled together. I want to say even with Google Play Music, there was podcast integration before the stand-alone app that had a hard divider between the music and podcast side. So they know how to do it.
Sadly they either fired those people long ago or repurposed them for something else.
Honestly, the ever growing Google graveyard makes me _extremely_ skeptical about starting to use any new Google service. Does anyone remember Google+? Yeah, me neither. 😒 Maybe if Google spent less effort on AI guardrails that produce diverse Nazis and more on long term product vision, this would be less of an issue.
I guess it just has to do with google's approach. They create so many services and watch which one's catch on. Some find small user bases which really like that one app but remain unknown in the greater Android world. Like here: most Android users just never knew about Google podcasts.
Reminds me of Google Pay Music moving over to You Tube Music. Still missing features.
thanks useful! I've just downloaded Antenna and it looks like what I need, all the simplicity of google podcasts, no pointless bells and whistles, also gets BBC content, so good alternative to BBC sounds maybe.

I honestly think they should either 1. Don’t kill it (no longer possible) and/or 2. Add a new tab at the bottom of Music

Google Podcasts was the one app they got right....as usual Google chooses to get rid of the good ones and keep the crap "UA-cam Music"

i have the same sentiment, I guess I was part of the 3% that listen to Google Podcasts every day. I did export all my subscriptions to UA-cam Music but like you just pointed out there are a lot of features still missing. The big one for me is the "mark as played". In the meantime, I'm still using Google Podcasts until April 2nd and sometimes I use my iPad to listen to Apple Podcasts. Hopefully, Google will unclutter their Podcast on UA-cam Music and add all those missing features from Google Podcasts.
I was in the same boat. I actually use YT music a lot for just music, but importing podcasts made everything intolerably messy. Now I'm using pocket casts and I'm quite happy with it.
I've recently discovered Antenna app and I'm giving it a chance, but I'm still attached to Podurama. By the way, I saw you installed it but didn't mention in the video. Why?
As you said in the video, there should either be TWO separate apps, or a completely different interface in UTM. If there are no podcast mode settings/options in Music, what's the point 🤷🏻♂️❓
Was a dedicated GP user. I tried a few and there were no bad ones that I tried but settled on Aurelian. It is the closest to GP in my view. Very simple to learn after making the switch.
Apple has a dedicated app,so should Google. Killing GP is a mistake.

This video is exactly what I needed. UA-cam music is not yet adequate for podcast use and I doubt it ever will be.

Yep, I actually use this app more often than I thought. I like how there's a separate app for it but. Yeah it's just sad.
I love Google Podcasts, guess I'm gonna have to shop around for a new app, I can't stand that YT Music garbage, it's the first thing I uninstall when setting up a new device.

Yt music doesn't have all of the podcasts that it hasn't transferred over. Like there is a local podcast that I listen to. Google might not have transferred everything to yt music just yet

listening history, and manual listening queue, are the most important features , editing the queue - could be a great feature to add to google podcasts

aw hell no I'm not going to use a music app i don't even use just to listen to podcasts, i'm switching to Apple Podcasts from now on, shame it isn't available on my Pixel but it is on my Mac and iPad. I want my music and my podcasts to be on separated, dedicated apps.
When news of this app being closed first broke, the hosts on an Android-focused podcast I listen to admitted that almost none of them had ever even tried G-Podcasts, let alone use it regularly.
So I'm not the least bit surprised that it's being closed - it simply didn't have a large enough user-base to keep it going.
I stopped using it after episode sorting & management never improved, even after repeated Feedback submissions to Google over the years.

Google podcast has support to add rss feeds. So in theory you could use it without googles servers but google wants you to login to add a rss subscription
I have Yourube premium as well and had google pod i hate youtube music for pods so ill be using your suggestions

2:34 That disclaimer on the top of the app saying you won't be able to listen to podcasts. Is it limited only to the audience in the USA? Here in India, I am not able to see that.
I wasn't a fan of Google podcasts but the fact no auto deletion of played episodes on YT Music is the reason I went with antennapod
Honestly, I like YT music today. Hated it initially but over the years since the switch over from GPM. It's gotten a lot better.
I still miss GPM's personal library streaming though.
As for podcasts. I've always used PodcastAddict.

Agree with all you've said. I love the simplicity. I've been away for a few days, just queue up for car journey. Then nark played. Easy to find. Almost needs a drop down at the top. Or a pinned button at the bottom. I'll look at your suggestions. Can't easily find or they aren't there for a lot of existing subs. Can't subscribe as such in fbd same way. Just like a messy v1.2 version.

Yeah, I'm switching to a dedicated 3th party podcast app, like most users probably, it amazes me Google didn't look at both Spotify and Soundcloud which offers podcast functionality nobody use.
Pocketcast app is the best alternative to the OG Google podcasts
Just got the dreaded email from Google Podcast, time to move on to etiher Antenna or Castbox. It is such a shame because I really do not like UA-cam music as a platform for my podcasts.
I use podcast guru when on my pixel and then apples when on my 15 pro max
The youtube music replacement isn't just about changing to another podcast app.
The youtube music downloads podcasts from podcasts' database only once, while normal podcast app downloads for each user each play, counting as creators' income. All the work to gain full control to podcast ads and monopoly the business.
Sure, it would be easier for small creator since google does the math and give them money, but users would be having this level of variety when choosing pod cast apps in the future.

Easy fix. Make google podcast an add on to UA-cam music and change the UA-cam music Ui material you design would be amazing

As a Google Podcast replacement, I chose what I already I use for my Musics, which is great for both World: Spotify.

My problem with podcasts on YTM that I can't find any of my podcasts bcz it doesn't support RSS search like Google Podcast so I imported them but still you can't find any podcasts unless it's a video version and really weird suggestions from normal UA-cam videos, plus it's a mess , I'm trying pocket cast but I'm still using Google podcast everyday until the shutdown

I want to like YT music, but it's missing so many of the podcasts I listen to. The fact I can't mark an episode as played is huge. I'd say until there are a few improvements then I'll stick with Spotify.

It was such a clean and nicely designed app. On top of that, its size was also less. Was using it since the launch. Sad that they killed it.
I’m a massive hater when it comes to decisions like this. Shit like this makes me want to leave the Google ecosystem because what’s even the point of adopting their next product?? That being said, a podcast app with comments including sounds much needed, and UA-cam is already a strong source of community feedback. This is Google leaning into their strengths which is smart of them. But it sounds like podcasts in UA-cam music need a bit of work.

Google podcast is the only place where I get my podcast. I tried everything else. Nothing as simple and usefull attention focus place for getting my podcasts. I hated the news on my email box.

I don't get it. For example, I live in a country where Yt music is not available. Google Podcasts was always available and I remain with 0 alternatives.
Yeah I hate how youtube music will go to a different channels podcast when I only want episodes from the one the listening to currently.

I think there are some places where google should listen to us.
I think I used Google Podcasts once when I installed it but I'm still annoyed that it's getting canned. It's one of those things I have there for a rainy day that I might use sometime. Having it in YT Music is too messy with my normal video playlists, music and now podcasts all jumbled together. Great for google because it's less dev work and more profit through ads and more people paying for premium.
I think it's fair to say that avid podcast listeners are a tech savvy bunch that are well entrenched in the google ecosystem if they're using Google's podcasting app. By canning the app google is taking a dump on it's long term fans. I know google can afford to not give a damn but it's a pretty crappy move by big G.

Why not eliminate everything but the UA-cam app? Users could have the ability to select from the normal yt, music or podcast interface from the bottom or something. Everybody wins?
Not a fan of the combination because it loses track where I am at in a podcast. Say I'm on podcast 400 out of 800. If I listen to a song and go back to podcast, I then have to scroll for a minute just to get back to where I was at.

So everyone i know is talking about this, but i can't see anything in the United kingdoms version of the app. Now reading online it seems its only being shut down in the USA is that correct ?
Yep. April 2 shutdown in the US. Likely to follow soon in more regions. Might be worth getting switched over ASAP!

Took a moment to figure out features but for the most part all cut over now just have to get used to not using google :(
UA-cam music absolutely SUCKS for podcasts. For one thing, if you use it to go between music and podcasts it will lose your place in the podcast, starting it over if you don't finish an episode before listening to music. Secondly, I have had the app crash several times while downloading episodes. We're not talking about obscure small-audience shows, but NPR's "This American Life." I finally had to delete it out of my episode feed because the whole program seizes up if I try to listen. I can't forgive Google for forcing this rollout before working out the bugs.

It's the original podcast app all over again. Which is why I stuck with pocketcast.
I love google and will continue to I'm sure but this move I just can't deal with, I love the Google Podcast app and I'm ready to fight to keep it lol. I like all my shit to be google and I don't wanna use YT Music for podcasts. As you pointed out I can't stand the cluttered YT music app when it comes to podcast I like those two apps being separated but I guess only time will tell with Google

YT Music for podcasts sucks. It won't let you select date order for listening to the casts.

We still don't have the migration tool for exporting podcasts to YTM that Google released in the US months ago. And this is... what, one month before shutdown?
When Google Podcasts came on my new phone in 2020, I had no intention of using it. I changed my mind when I discovered that it was better than Podcast Addict.
Of course, now that I love it, they are getting rid of it. Typical.
